I think there's something to be said about a game about a musical, having bad music.

        >Sega didn't even properly license the game so Disney got on their asses and forced them to pull the game off shelves
Not quite, Sega licensed it properly, it was Disney that fricked it up. Fantasia was Walt's ultimate passion project; it was so dear to him that his nephew Roy Edward Disney had promised him to never allow any licensed adaptations.

          Anonymous

Yeah, that was it, my mistake. I remembered Disney had it pulled but I forgot the full reason.
Also it turns out the reason why the game sucked was because all the "..of Illusion" games were made by Sega's AM divisions (Castle was done by AM7) and Fantasia was outsourced to Infogrames.

Look at the devs' prior works. They were all experienced on various home computers, but Fantasia was their first console title. Also, they had a tight deadline for a holiday release.

Still doesn't change that Fantasia was garbage in comparison to Castle/World of Illusion and Quackshot.

This is correct, Disney screwed up. But thanks to this mishap they gave Sega favorable terms on future licenses, which ended up giving us Quackshot, more Illusion titles, and even fricking Aladdin.
So overall Fantasia was worth for something, at least...

When you lazily try to port an actual piece into a highly compressed or simplified format, it doesn't work.

The Infamously bad Sonic and the Dark Brotherhood theme is just that, a shittily ported, highly compressed mess of an actually decent theme from another sonic game.

The melody on this isn't bad. There's clearly a good theme that could be used and inserted into a bunch of tracks. The beat at the beginning feels really barren though, and it makes me kind of uncomfortable. It fills out soon enough, so I get it's trying to build up to that, but the first 35 seconds just kinda gets me antsy, and if that's a menu theme, chances are, that's what most people are going to be hearing.

I kind of like Crazy Train. It's so out there, and honestly impressive how it sounds on real hardware.

                >honestly impressive how it sounds on real hardware
It absolutely is as is most of what he composed, dude was a genius at handling that sound chip. But it would've been better as a proof of concept of what the chip can do, it's not good music for a game like SoR

Poets is alright, yeah. I would have mixed it up with more orthodox sounding sections to make it more palpable, but it's not bad.

But I get what you're saying and you're right. I think they really wanted to drive home how upped the stakes were in this game by making the music more "aggressive", but it kind of bites the game in the ass

I can understand that idea for sure, I just don't think the artist was good at making aggressive songs that were also funky and easy to listen to. This sounds more like the type of stuff they listen to at MDMA rave parties, but I think even them wouldn't have liked these tracks too much.

SOR 3's soundtrack from what I can recall had randomized melodies, and then those melodies were tweaked slightly. it's pretty unique and most of the soundtrack is great stuff. I love 1-3's OSTs but I remember 3's the most for how off the wall aggressive it is and how little beautiful melodies or phrases will leak through the chaos.

This whole game's OST is an example of bad instrumentation.

It's likely that they hired a musician who didn't know anything about the process of making music for video games, so they just slapped named instrument sound banks on the written notes and hoped for the best.

People who hate XBX's soundtrack legitimately have no taste.

I hate this game's soundtrack so much. None of them are any good.

    This piece of shit
Doesn't help that it gets used as a boss theme too except for a few special encounters.

Turned me off more than anything else in the game

Harmony of Dissonance had to bring the music to Gameboy levels since all of the CPU power was going towards the grafix, which WOULD fine, as Konami was able to extract musical magic from the Gameboy at one point, but composition-wise, the music just sucks, I can't think of any HoD track that I want to listen to casually the way I do with Circle and Aria

    >it's another cave/sewer level

Its really shocking that out of all the castlevania games on GBA, that this one had the worst fricking music out of any of them though.
