Clothed women and pronouns have ruined games. How are you supposed to enjoy something when it asks you one question at the beginning about how you'd like to be referred to???

      Anonymous

Creators should focus on making a coherent story first before thinking about the theme so that it comes naturally rather than feeling forced. Yakuza 5 is a game where the writers shoved the main theme in your face over and over again at the expense of the story, and it ended up an indecipherable dogshit with loads of inconsistencies as a result.

The theme of sacrificing your "true" self for the sake of power shows up pretty consistently, both with parasite, Gale's questline and Astarion's questline. Also messages about sharing your burdens to overcome trauma or something it's been awhile since I played, but that was definitely there and not particularly subtle.

      Anonymous

Fricking seriously. You have a clear and constant theme from the first few hours of all of your companions dealing with themes of loss of self-identity and pieces of themselves, sometimes literally. Repeat motifs of addiction and resistance to it, zealotry and pushing something you're familiar with as a solution to your problems past a point you should've stopped before doubling down. Struggles with mortality and coming to terms with the finite nature of life. That's before you get into broader strokes and more specific plot themes. Pair that with the supposedly canon repentant Durge run to enact those themes yourself, and it's abundantly clear and pretty kino. I'm not saying it's the best thing ever written or greatest game narrative, but saying there's nothing there is a truly brainlet take.

Even with Karlach it's true but in an inverse way. Gortash betrays her for power and she has to deal with the trauma of having put herself out there sincerely and naively and getting betrayed

Yup. Pretty much this. The central and overarching theme of the story is very clearly "The Price of Power" in not at all vague terms. It runs through almost every single companion and villain, as well as you the protagonist. Gale, Shart, literally every True Soul, Karlach, Raphael, Astarion and Cazador, Emperor, Kethric, Orin and Gortash, Wyll and Duke Ravengard, the gnomes, the Dead Three themselves etc. It poses the question "power but at what cost" over and over. So much so that you the player can choose to sacrifice yourself for the greater good or become a world ending destroyer at the cost of your very soul. People who pretend to miss this are either being full of shit, haven't played the game or are actual children. It's not even presented in a deep or philosophical way. He'll there's even a LITERAL deal with the devil story in there for fricks sake.

Everybody refuses to take things how they are intended, it's a race to the bottom consisting of deliberately twisting everything to make people everyone perceive everything as negatively as possible, and actively try and hide the original intent of the statement.

BG3 is a glorified visual novel. The combat sucks, the gameplay just stands in the way of the real "game". It's a big budget coomer VN with decent voice acting, but the combat and D&D elements made the whole thing worse. All of the above, good or bad, WAS reasonably novel, and kept normies occupied while they fricked the vampire/frog/mid white b***h, and convinced them it was the greatest work of their lifetime

It's still nuts to me that Larian made a far more enjoyable 5e combat system than fricking WotC.
Even if you remove every other homebrew they did, simply changing how Jump distances/heights work and making it a bonus action is a HUGE boon to martial characters, and with higher levels, can actually make them feel fantastical. Just simple jumping. WotC couldn't even do that.

WotC couldn't even do that.

because it's basically the same combat as in DOS2 which itself was fun

Neither did the majority of old AD&D and D&D video games. The point is the adventure. After the OG Baldur's Gate games, the point of the characters was also added.

You don't need some "deeper meaning". You can, but most people want to create a character and have awesome adventures with their companions.

The theme is, life is what you make it, but don't expect everything to go to plan.

People on this website are too moronic to identify any other theme in media besides something as reductionist as "liberals good" or "white man bad." Anyway, as others have said, it's better to write a solid story first and let the themes emerge rather than starting with a moral lesson and shoehorning into your narrative wherever possible, making it feel forced.

It punishes you by locking you out of content because most of it expects you to be a good boy.

          Anonymous

the punishment for playing an evil character is that you don't get to do a lot of quests and you don't get several party members. But there is no reactivity in that the world will act differently towards your character or anything like that.

          Anonymous

Punish you how? Obviously the groups you kill or frick over won't have anything to do with you but your evil karmic vibe doesn't magically transmit across the world and turn all of good society against you - in fact it opens up routes for other factions.

There's also the Dark Urge character origin which is basically designed for this kind of playthrough, with you being possessed by a crazy psycho cannibal spirit, that also has it's own story routes
