Become a defacto horse in the console race by being synonymous with PC's entire ecosystem (and further diving in with their hardware like the Deck) will do that. Also their structure was too loose, everybody chooses what they want to work on so they rarely got enough people on one game to finish it after a while.

It's been publicized for a while that Valve's structure is intentionally extremely loose on the development front. Each employee has a ton of freedom to work on what they want but that lead to a lack of focus. If Valve had dedicated two teams to making SOMETHING out of their workforce that wasn't upkeeping Steam or existing games then they'd probably have been dropping great games at least every 2 years. As it stands they mostly just put out games that show off their new hardware, like Alyx & Aperture Desk Job.

NTA but for a long time Valve ran this system they called "Cabals" where were basically the different development teams for each game and ongoing project. Employees were totally free to choose whichever Cabal they wanted to join. All the desks and chairs in the Valve office were on wheels so you could literally up and move to whichever area you wanted to work in. The problem this created is that there were like 100 people working on Dota 2 while 15 people worked on CS:GO and like 5 were working on TF2 (and this was back when TF2 was still sort of a game worth working on).
I'm pretty sure they're since moved away from this system as it caused too many issues with productivity and managing project deadlines.

The anon saying they stopped doing this is correct
It caused too many issues with productivity as people just worked on whatever game they were enjoying playing themselves and hence why nobody worked on CS back in the day and why half life got abandoned, and tf2/l4d2 got dwindling support while dota2 got all the resources:
Dota was infinitely replayable, especially at the time, and all the devs played it together relgiously. They legitimately got bored of half life and later cs/l4d2/tf2.

When they realised this style wasnt sustainable and started making big cuts they basically ended up with small dedicated skeleton crews to keep each game on maintenance mode with their bulk of their workers on a dedicated project. Unfortunately, the cuts removed all the talent from the company. So they've stepped back to become a "console" rather than a game dev

        Unironically, studio culture killed Valve.

When Gaben stepped back to focus on other shit, the old dogs who got put in charge put in shit like huge bonuses for anything that nets the company excellent profit performance. This led to Valve focusing on Steam, the marketplace, & F2P multiplayer games with skin economies and MTX. All the emplyees who wanted to make actual single-player experiences or non F2P focused games would start the project due to the open environment they had, but it would quickly lose interest by most of the devs who would jump on due to only a small handful willing to do it and there was a high chance they wouldn't get a good performance bonus from working on it.

This is doubled with the fact that if you weren't considered "cool" with the old guard in charge or the other "cool" devs, you would be ostracized or belittled leading to a toxic environment for yourself. The only reason Big Picture/Steam boxes, VR and Deck became a thing is because Gaben wanted them to be a thing. Gaben is also trying to incorporate brain computer interface technology into VR so that will probably be when we see HL3 and the next big things from Valve. My guess is we won't see that for another 7 - 10 years at least.

        Anonymous

I still don't understand dice rolls in this game and I'm in act 3. Attack rolls are done first? Is it if you get a 20, it is a critical hit and maximizes your damage? The damage itself makes no sense to me, 1d6, savage attacker, etc.

          Anonymous

Yes, first you roll attack roll against the opponent AC and if it hits or exceeds AC you make a damage roll, if you roll a 20 it is a crit and the damage dice used in the damage roll is doubled. Attack roll is d20 + proficiency + ability modifiers generally, and damage rolls generally are the weapon's damage dice + ability modifier, feats, buffs, enchantments etc. can also be added to this.

            Anonymous

t-thanks. So technically if their Armour Class was over 9000, it would still be possible to make an attack if you got a 20? I need Halo MythBusters on this!

              Anonymous

Yes, attack rolls with a natural result of 20 automatically hit, even if the target's AC is higher than the attacker's highest possible result. Attack rolls with a natural result of 1, however, will automatically miss even if the attacker's result is higher than the target's AC.

It's usually house-ruled that way, yes. But in practical terms it's the same because a GM would be unlikely to let you face a creature you can't possibly damage, and if it did occur because for example the players would insist on attacking something they couldn't possibly defeat you would either TPK them or possibly pull some shenanigans like magically putting them to sleep, plane-shifting them or so on.

So what? It's the most complete implementation of a rule set to date, almost no other CRPGs even have properly implemented lighting mechanics, distance, verticality, environmental effects and so on.

            Anonymous

It has the most interactivity with shit like speak with the dead, feather fall, etc, but the core mechanics are still as simple as it gets in the genre.

              Anonymous

Which still makes it the complex crpg to date as it has way more systems implemented and interactions between them than any other crpg.

Also, simply having bigger numbers ala 3e does not exactly equal complexity, especially not when every feat interaction occurs linearly by way of prerequisites.

                Anonymous

3rd Edition is complex only in that it offers you a choice of thousands of character options, of which only a fraction are actually useful.

                Anonymous

Barely any of those systems are useful or required to beat the game, speak with dead stops being properly implemented after act 1 for example, and terrain in combat is almost an afterthought because of how easy combat is.

                Anonymous

It doesn't matter if the game is too easy or whether using such and such system stops being used, it is still objectively the most complex crpg ever made as most crpgs don't even bother implementing really basic things like flanking, verticality or lighting effects.

                Anonymous

                >It doesn't matter
It does, verticality literally just adds a second dice, you are WAY overselling it, houndreds of other mechanics in other games do the exact same thing. Being able to push people off ledges is the ONLY actual mechanic the game has that other games don't have.
It looks cool but the cool factor disappears once you realize there is no point in doing it because combat can be solved by two fireballs and laezel

All the major contributors to RPGs were white Christians. Now you know why they keep pushing this woke subversive woke trash so hard.

This game has a dozen white companions and one black one. You aren’t going to find a less pozzed cast in any game, even including astarion.

What the fuck are you talking about? Pretty much every RPG designer from the 70s was either a proto-redditor fedora atheist or some kind of weird renaissance fair neo-pagan. The few "Christians" were invariably some kind of weird culty Christian like a Mormon or JW.

It's not a publicly traded company with share holders to appease, its really that fucking simple. The moment it is, it will go the way blizzard did.

anon, it's not unique to BG3 or 2023.
/v/'s most talked about game for the longest time way back and for years was a dating sim about crippled/deformed girls.

relationship stuff put into games helps sell games.

Think we will get a hell expansion where we can help Karlach out or think it'll be upper city first?

I thought they weren't planning on DLC? Though if they did have a content update, it'd probably have more to do with the main game itself rather than any sort of playable epilogue.

Total Degeneracy. Many studios have thought about making such a game, but Larian was the first to actually do it and it paid off

I thought China didn’t want any gay stuff in the games they fund, was that just a lie?

Probably just for games that are for the Chinese market. They just know what different demographics are looking for, chasing the dollar supersedes all values.

The DOS and DOS2 production videos will tell you everything
At least the core team of Larian is just a bunch of nerds that have been trying to make something as good as they think Ultima 7 is. Even when Larian was near bankrupt they did everything to keep it afloat just out of passion, it's people that love games and play games. It will most likely go to shit when Swen steps down but until then i trust them.

They did everything the game industry has been taught was wrong, but as it turns out all of those things are simply things people want, and the game industry has been continually shooting itself in the foot for more than a decade because they decided to teach themselves wrong.
