Baldurs Gate

I'm a zoomer, do I go for the enhanced edition or the original? I liked pillars of eternity (the first one the 2nd is a shitty pirate game) and baldurs gate 3 EA, what am I getting into?

Enhanced Edition. Definitely. It fixes a lot of the problematic content found in the original.

    Get the EE.
Just keep in min that the new companions Beamdog introduced stick out and not in a good way.

If you want to play through the entire saga (BG1, SoD, BG2 and ToB) look into the EET mod.

      >SoD
how about adivising him not to buy or try to play that thing? there is no reason to, not just because it is at the best points mediocre, but because it puports to fill a gap between 1 and 2 that does not exist.

I recently started playing BG, went through 1 and now in 2. I really expected all the complaining about the EE companions to be exaggerating nostalgic nerds and was prepared to not even notice who the EE characters were, but man was I wrong.
How did they even manage to write this badly? How could anyone write this shit? Did they just not even hire any writers? Was it just the programmers in their lunch breaks or something?

Hello welcome to the modern era, this is the quality of writing across all entertainment media for a reason. It is intentional, whoever is in charge of society wants this.
Programmers in their breaks could write better, because they would at least just half ass it and it would be mediocre and blend in not stand out and be offensively bad on purpose

    Enhanced Edition.

A bunch of people are going to whine and cry about either optional content, all of which can removed by a single mod, or a about the game being buggy, which while true at launch, is definitely not the case now.

It uses the BG2 engine and systems, has a bunch of QoL improvements, visual improvements, basically all the old mods have been ported, plus a whole bunch of really great new mods have been made (the UI mods in particular), and decently fun Arena mode if you just feel like feeding some characters into a bunch of combat encounters.

Beamdog sucks, but you should just be pirating the damn thing anyway, so it's not like it matters.

      its really simple
do you already own them? if yes, just play ee at that point and simply avoid the ee content, avoid all the characters, avoid all the siege of dragonspear shit, if you want to try and mod it - not sure if possible - to unfrick their dialogue changes do that.
if you dont own them? just pirate bg1+2 and mod it yourself with the appropriate mods.

      >It uses the BG2 engine and systems
this is not a positive for bg1. and its not the bugs, its not the optional content, its the alteration of dialogue and content that was already there, changing jaheiras dialogue for modern moron sjw sensibilities is not acceptable under any circumstances for example.

I'm a boomer on my third playthrough of BG2.
I went with a more-or-less default party last time. Who should I bring along?

I was thinking Viconia, which means no Keldorn unfortunately. I'd rather not have Nalia, Minsc, Yoshimo/Imoen, and maybe not Jaheira. But who else can cast Chaotic commands etc.?

      Anonymous

if you're taking viconia then you might as well make use of the opportunity to take an evil party. grab edwin, sarevok, korgan. fill out with some chaotic neutrals or something because frick the ee characters even though hexxat and dorns alignment would fit well

        Anonymous

I thought you didn't have to manage repuation to keep Viconia, is that wrong?
I've only ever made good/neutral parties so far.

          Anonymous

No but you have shit like as you said keldorn not getting along with her to the point you have to pick one or the other. Viconia doesn't have a problem with anyone or any action really, but others sometimes have a problem with her.
If you've only done good or neutral that's all the more reason to do evil really, get to experience the dialogue and story of more characters. Just pick characters you've never taken before is the best option for a more engaging playthrough.

I pirated it back in 98 off IRC. It blows me away that after all these years these so called "improvements" in EE don't make it run any better on a Ryzen 9/2070 than it did on my old P200 and Voodoo3 2000. And then, if you zoom in, it just makes everything blurry. Good job, Scamdog. Good thing you at least removed all the "problematic" content. I mean you could at least have ported it to fricking GEM or some shit.

You do realize that "running better" and "zooming in without it being blurry" require remaking the entire game, right?
It's a 2D game ffs. Did you expect animation frames to be added like the Mario bouncing hat meme?

Beamdog is a guilty of a number of different crimes. Here are the major ones.

    1. The Enhanced Editions are essentially a collection of free mods that had existed for nearly twenty years. Beamdog gathered them all up, slapped "Enhanced Edition" on it and resold it as a new product. There's very very little in the Enhanced Editions that wasn't already out there, and most of it is stuff you don't want (like obnoxious character outlines).

    2. The games didn't sell so well and the originals were still far outselling them, even twenty years after their release, so Beamdog had EVERY digital distributor stop selling the originals and ONLY sell the Enhanced Edition. If you want to buy a digital copy of the originals now, they're "bundled" into the Enhanced Edition. Now these scumbags can claim sales from people just wanting to buy the originals as their own.

    3. The infamous 600+ bugs on launch. The game is still riddled with bugs (as even a perfunctory glance over their forums show) but the fact that it took nearly two years for them to get a game that had been working fine for 20 years to reach playability after launch is telling of their wild incompetence.

    4. This is where we get to the ones that really piss people off. Beamdog couldn't just remaster the game, they had to frick with the content too. New dialogue for existing npcs like Jaheira, Viconia, Safana, Kivan, et cetera was written in to make the characters more progressive and leftist friendly. Beamdog shills will argue that "adding content isn't changing content XDDD" but it is when the new content changes the core personalities of the existing characters. This is in addition to adding a slew of their own LGBT (hitherto there were none in Baldur's Gate) NPCs, all flooded with OP attributes and magic items to encourage people to play them despite their cancer.

    5. Siege of motherfricking Dragonspear.
