Baldur's Gate

Gonna play Baldur's Gate soon after a while away from CRPGs due to burnout, any tips for someone who knows shit about the system? Also your opinion on the classes, thinking on just going with Abdel the default Fighter, but want to see if there's anything i should try out

Multiclassing is borderline OP especially in the first game where each class is only a level or two behind a pure class while reaping the benefits of both. I would avoid a 3 class multi like Fighter/Thief/Mage since you will really start to feel left behind and you have plenty of companions to handle every job. Don't bother with dual classing, the 'human' version of multiclassing, until you know what you are doing. Fighter/Cleric is a great first character since you can still bash faces, wear heavy armor, buff, and heal yourself while having an easy to manage spell list.

Why? Is it something easy to frick up?

It basically works by starting as class A, then you pick a level to switch over to class B back as level 1 AND lose the benefits of class A until the level of class B exceeds the level of class A.

It creates a long period of time where you are dead weight while your new class catches up to your old class. There is a bullshit way to get around that by hoarding scrolls, dualing to mage, kicking everyone out of the party, then copying all the scrolls to your spellbook for experience to gain a bunch of levels at once. Theoretically dual classing is a stronger option for end game power but it all depends on how much trouble you're willing to put yourself through. However it does have the advantage of letting you start as a class with a kit for additional advantages where as multiclasses are stuck with base versions of their class. Unless you're a gnome. Don't ask.

Basically multiclasses are MUCH easier to play than dual classes.

Out of all the old school mechanics, dual classing is the one that most makes me wonder what in the frick they were smoking. I can't even imagine putting up with that shit in a real tabletop game.

I just played through both 1 and all its expansions and 2 with the same.

For 1 you HAVE to go explore and do side quests. Don't follow the main story TOO quickly you'll just die and get frustrated. That was my problem 20 years ago when I played at launch.

          THAC0 = Lower the better.

Dual Classing is usually not worth it. Wizards/Druids etc are weak in the beginning but get some REALLY good spells later on.

Always buff before battles and learn which spells are effective for which type of battle.

Stats don't technically carry over. You'll lose all items etc it's basically a fresh start.

What would you say are some good multiclassing/dualclassing options? Also im seeing on the wiki that there's "kits" with some major differences among each other

Dualing at lvl 2 is interesting because it doesn't cost you much. E.g. a specialist mage dualing to cleric at lvl 2 only sets you back 2500xp which shouldn't hold back your cleric progression in the long term at all. By the end you're just a cleric with extras.

Specialist wizard to cleric lets you use wands and scrolls. You also get a +2 bonus to saves vs spells of that school and gives enemies -2 on their saves against your spells (also cleric spells!) of that school. I like enchantment and necromancy for this

Fighter 2 to anything else for hit points and weapon ability (2 pips as a fighter means an extra half attack per round, too!). Putting this in bows is useful throughout AT LEAST the first half of BGEE

Armor Class and THAC0 are better the lower they are.

Stats work VERY differently in 2e compared to later editions, bafflingly so at times. For example, with some stats there's literally no difference in having it from 8 to 15. Wisdom can safely be cratered to 3 on any character that isn't a Cleric or Druid, and Charisma can be safely cratered to 3 on basically anyone. No matter what, it's good to maximize Dexterity for the best Armor Class bonus (unlike other editions, heavy armor does NOT negate the Dexterity bonus).

I have been thinking of trying these two as well. The stat rolling at the start is moronic though.

Just cheat. Nobody wants to admit it, but starting with all 18s is barely any different than just pumping the important stats and dumping the unimportant ones from a legit roll.

Do stats carry over or do I have to reroll in 2?

They're easy games and the battles pretty much happen on auto-pilot.

Replaying since BG1 with some mods, one change I did compared to my previous playthroughs is I removed exp cap for BG1. It's pretty fun. Fighter is a fairly safe choice for first character, but many would say it might be boring.
