Zoomers CANNOT comprehend minimalist storytelling
Dramatic last words isn't exactly subtle writing
Nobody said it was subtle.
There isn't any storytelling in these games.
The story is the bosses we killed along the way
Kek
And then the Ganker autists praise it for decades
I am sorry your IQ is not high enough to be able to recognize the storytelling.
Fuck that cringe shitalian. Why are you even watching Italian derivative content? The game was made in Japanese/English.
>everything you post represents what you actively follow
Yeah, that's usually how it works.
>he likes blade runner
holy fucking kys, kid
>muh IQ
This is bait but anon get real now. most of the fuckers playing games are not only underage but simply uneducated burgers meaning they lack in either or both experience with ancient mythology or history and thus the ability to recognize logical patterns in symbolism and human character
Diablo 3 on the other hand which im playing right now paints me a literal demon monster and tells me hes BAD. Much better game.
For real tho ive played souls games since DeS and the story is fucking boring which ironically is because im kinda of a brainlet
>no upskirts in the entire game
why is American so gay?
>shitty dress mods all over deviant art
>really shitty nude mod
why isn't there just a simple mod that puts panties and her bare thighs/butt under each dress?
Boomers... forgive me...
underrated
It functions. But it also just so happens that this is the lowest-effort approach to storytelling.
Towns? Nope, world is a cursed fantasy post-apocalypse (again)
Animate characters? Nah, they'll keep the same pose and mournfully chuckle for 30 continuous seconds.
Satisfying, sensible, bug-tested quests? No need. The NPC died tragically that's why they're not there any more :^)
Don't even bother, most aren't going to listen to reason that browse these threads
The towns thing is the most damning. How can you not make a single liveable looking area in a giant open world?
Raya Lucaria Academy? Stormveil castle? Leyndel? There are lots of locations that fulfill the role.
Because it doesn't matter and the resources are limited. Also what this guy
said.
because consoles can't handle it nor can the incompetent hack monkeys that call themselves "developers" now
It actually needs more effort because not only they have to come up with a story but then they also have to remove material just enough for the story to still be understandable but enough for it to be necessary to fill the gaps and birth speculation and interest around the lore.
Everything else you mention is worthless stuff for autists who enjoy Skyrim garbage.
Except that's not particularly difficult, whereas towns, animations, playtesting, and bugfixing all have significant costs in terms of development resources.
nah, it's storytelling that has the decency to take a step back and let the gameplay take the forefront
because let's face it, stories in vidya are mostly garbage, full of cliches, have embarrassing writing, and the writers tend to go diva and expect the player to stop every 5 minutes to listen to some character yap about whatever. Not to mention all the extra, forgettable shit they have to write in for sidequests, or to justify gameplay mechanics that would never be needed for a movie or a novel
in from games, and also shit like metroid prime, the story integrates with the gameplay and its mechanics. Trying to shove a story told via traditional means in a videogame leads to general clunkiness, abysmal writing, immersion-breaking shit and more often than not gameplay suffers for it (like constraining the player, or shoving fake 'decisions' that don't go anywhere)
unironically read a novel for good stories, vidya writers are mostly incompetent and vidya itself is a poor medium for it
Stop thinking about these things. You'll never enjoy games again if you keep this up
Zoomers can't comprehend anything, they have the lowest attention span of any generation in history.
It's not even minimalist. Does anyone here really think Irina's father not being able to protect his daughter is minimalist? Or Latenna abandoning Lobo?
Only Maliketh is minimalist out of those.
Fpfm (First port forgive me)
>Anon deepthroats FromSoft's cock
Zoomers are the people who love this crap you fucking retard. Zoomers love going to Youtube and hearing some gay talk about "lore" for 2 hours. This style of "minimalist" story telling was cute 10 years ago but after 8 games games of the same type of shit its lost its novelty. The biggest hit are the NPC quests. The fuck is the point of these when you know they're all going to die? From is so fucking predictable with their writing it makes it hard for even give a shit about any of these characters because you're given no time to grow attached to them. Like virtually everything else about their games it's become predictable and tiresome. And like most aspects about world building and "lore" Smellden Ring is completely shit on by Morrowind, a 20 year old game with an actual good implementation of "minimalist" story telling. All of Morrowind's crazier lore is within the game that you can seek out if you want to, and it's given to you via books/notes if you're willing to read and seek them out. There's also the aspect of the in-game unverse's unreliable narrator which throws another layer of intrigue on top. As opposed to From who puts everything on item descriptions. Is my character turning items over and a holographic wall of text appears? Why can I know this information but my character cannot in regards to anything related to the story? What's the point of any of it if I can't apply it to the game world. So many story possibilities are wasted in thee games because "lol its just dark souls bro just kill everyone".
And yet you zoomers Soulstrannies STILL think it's some kind of high brow shit. Like the only two possible ways to write a game are either Dark Souls or Forespoken. No in between.
what's your complaint when you can just ignore them?
So many words to just tell us you're a discord trannie.
I'm 34 and I have always loved good orators talking about lore for 2 hours, but your point is still valid.
Vagueness can be a great narrative tool, but when your entire game's lore and exposition is "LMAO FIND IT ON YOUR OWN!", It gives way for too much autism and people seeing things that aren't there.
Phase 4 Marvel suffered heavily from keeping everything vague and soothing their public's hunger with HYPE CAMEOS!
Now nobody even speaks of where the story is going. Everyone is just like "THIS LOGO ON THE DOCUMENT WE SAW FOR 3 FRAMES IN THAT ONE MOVIE, COULD IT BE WOLVERINE? WHO'S NEXT? WHO YOU WANNA SEE?"
Are you retarded, man? Zoomies mostly play BR's and the variety of newest streamer bait like amogus, co-op horror game #12 etc. They don't give a shit about Morrowind or Dark Souls.
Yes, new streamer bait. Like Elden Ring, which set viewership records on Twitch.
>ER is a streamer bait
You can't even make a funny short vid out of Souls games and that's what zoomers love - best you could do is pvp montages but that's still not it. If there's no real online component, zoomers will probably not even bother with your game.
Damn, look at all the zoomers watching Elden Ring or Souls streams.
Just to be clear: I bear no ill will towards zoomers. It's just that they're not really interested in such games, generally speaking.
>You can't even make a funny short vid out of Souls games and that's what zoomers love
yes you do. 90% of the funny elden turd outtakes you see being spammed around here have their origins in twitter, reddit, twitch or tiktok.
stop arguing points that you haven't even bothered verifying, you retarded gay monkey. fromturdware isn't niche. you're about 5 years out of date when it comes to where social media culture stands today.
>Twitch views screencap because he's clueless, retarded and doesn't understand how Twitch viewership works
Pottery.
>HE'S STILL GOING AT IT
>gets his ass blown wide open
>makes a template meme response with an epic "LOOK I GOTCHA YOU MADE THIS POST" screencap
I don't remember the last time I argued with an honest fromdrone, because that last time doesn't even exist. It's literally like arguing with a boomer republican/democrat.
>mexican jirenposter Hispanic from /dbs/ got btfo'd so hard hes trying to spread his mental illness on Ganker
lmao if it's actually been some dumb asshurt Hispanic this entire time I'm going to die laughing
It's the same spastic over and over again, seething on twitter, forum sections of Wired comments and is responsible for like 80% of these type of threads, one man mentally ill army posting these threads for like 16 hours a day, not even part of the discord group you can tell it's him every time by the way he talks and makes the same spelling mistakes.
this post is what untreated mental illness looks like.
>NOOOO STOP NOTICING
oh I'm noticing alright
>y-you can't point out our spam! that makes YOU the spammer!
Peak mental illness
You are being a pest. He is providing a service.
It's a bot. The same bot that was programmed to make those anti Kojima Death Stranding threads months prior until he got bored and gave up.
I don't know if it's the same guy but there was one gay crying about Elden Ring on twitter because it wasn't a PS exclusive. He was absolutely seething at Fromsoft and actively posting here until someone called him out. Seeing as we always have some dedicated autist on Ganker it might still be the same tard.
>oozing axe wound fromchud thinks he's at home on Ganker of all places on the internet
kek like clockwork
>see? see? I found a chud on twitter that likes it, bet you feel dumb now heh
Speaking of clockwork, you shouldn't be late on your 6am sharp dilation session.
Discord chud projection is always funny
>westoids see an effeminate male character
>OMG HE'S A MENTALLY ILL chud LIKE ME!!!!
I don't know why we stopped lobotomizing these freaks.
>Gwyndolyn is said to have been forced to dress as a girl by his father
>is still referred to exclusively by male pronouns
>his entire role in the game is to maintain an illusion that directly denies reality and attack anyone who tries to lift the illusion and reveal the truth
>chuds think this is omg literally me
Pottery
Dopamine fried brain coupled with terminally online social retardation prevents them from understanding any layer of subtlety. They simply see a character they think is a chud and claim it. I would almost feel pity for them but they are such fucking vocal obnoxious narcissist that they get everything they deserve.
Reminder Ninja Gaiden filters the modern gen.
>Zorofag Elden Ring run
Based zoomy, looks fun.
Um...where is FFXIV? Sisses, you told me it was the best MMO...
Zoomers love Elden Ring and Souls. They are the predominant audience.
We both know you don't really believe that, so why say it
Because it's an objective fact. It takes ten seconds to find zoomies on Twitter that are fans of the game.
You can find zoomers that are fans of literally anything
No you can't, and not in the same numbers.
I don't know why slowbrains like you continue to use this goofy tactic when it proves absolutely nothing
>oh yeah well here's a chud I found on twitter who says it likes [game], that means it's a chud game
Nobody said it was a chud or zoomer game. But it's objectively true zoomers and trannies love ER.
You're also wrong that you can find zoomers as fans of anything when there are things that are known and recognized zoomer repellent like basically all media made before 2010.
Zoomers and trannies hate ER, sorry sis
>zoomers and trannies
>trannies and zoomers
this place has rotted your brain, go outside for the love of christ you bellend
>Zoomers love Elden Ring and Souls. They are the predominant audience.
>Because it's an objective fact
Post sources supporting this "objective fact" then. It should be easy, since you're writing with such confidence.
https://twitter.com/search?q=elden%20ring&src=typed_query
There's nothing in there that supports your claims. It's just people posting crap on Twitter.
Or perhaps are you implying Twitter is the designated platform for Zoomers? If that was the case, then you're more delusional then I thoguht.
"The generation build upon 10 second short videos with the attention span of goldfish go on youtube to dive deep into 2-3 hours of lore videogames"
Do you believe the shit you write?
he hit the nail on the head Zoomer tourist
This makes total sense as long as you ignore that Souls got popular 12 years ago when zoomers were little kids, youtube essays didn't exist and smartphones weren't mainstream. I fell in love with Dark Souls in college. I'm in my 30s now.
Souls is unironically a millennial series. I started playing Demon Souls back on my second year of University. It's most certainly not carried by zoomers. That's not to say that Elden Ring didn't gain some zoomer players but I would be willing to be that the majority of the playerbase and fandom are boomers. You argument about zoomies loving it because they can sit and watch 3 hours youtube lore dumps has some merit but you ignore the fact that a vast swath of millenials do the same while sitting and doing mundane desk work. I listened to four hour deep dives about Zohar/Kabbalism in Xenogears when I was doing accounting work for a small business and I'm a filthy 33 year old millenial.
Everything you said is 100% correct anon, anyone disagreeing with you is just a butthurt Fromdrone or Zoomie
>B-b-b-but you said that zoomers have no attention span but watch 2 hour lore videos
They don't actually watch them, just have them on as "background noise" while they spam watch Tiktok and just pick up some points through osmosis (not like these 2 hour lore videos have 2 hours worth of topics, just 10 minutes worth spread out over 2 hours). They want to seem deep and hardcore so they pick the "hardest" game they can find and still finish and then over-hype the hell out of every single aspect of the game to feel like they're in some secret exclusive gaming echelon while putting in minimal effort, and if you call them out on it then they can just act like you were filtered or "just didn't get it"
Holy mother of projection!
I think Zoomers and a lot of Millenials have fried their brains with pornography and constant consumerism that if a piece of media has any depth or requires an ounce of attention and investment in the lore they immediately get frustrated angry and annoyed. They need Marvel quips and action every 15 mins or the media is "mid."
If you want a true blackpill ask zoomers about their favorite books or novels. You'll be lucky if you find anyone that has read anything higher than a middle school reading level or read anything at all. Some of them get offended or annoyed at the mere thought of having to read a book even if its short. I worked briefly as a substitute/teacher assistant on my last year of University and the number of students that blatantly plagiarized, didn't submit or complained about shot writing assignments was incredible. Out of a class of 50 or so people, I'd say roundabout 35 either plagiarized or wouldn't complete these assignments. It's so bad the school would turn a blind eye to it.
It’s why I was exited for the sequel to FE Three Houses. I thought they would get even more in depth since the reception for the game was good but then Engage came out lol
herbed this garbage thread made by Discord trannies btw
Never stops being funny that a somewhat funny tweet from a chudlands writer is still their go-to ace in the hole like six months later lol
>minimalist storytelling
From games don't have minimalist storytelling.
absolutely
zoomers need MUH STORY MUH CUTSCENES MUH DIALOGUES
even if they are fucking pointless filler, they'd rather play shitty videogame with cutscenes and dialogues instead of a good videogames
i have a friend who is addicted to DMC and jerks off to it all the time, and when i told him to try out souls games he simply told me that he doesn't care about them just because there's "no quests, and no NPCs and no story" heh
he's a total brainlet playing moviegames all the time replaying one game over and over again (mentioned DMC) for many months instead of trying something new
DMC is great but no one on planet earth plays it for the story
you're retarded
When have you ever seen a From fan hate on Tolkien?
nooo just ignore him fgt. sheesh.
do not respond. He's anally furious about Miyazaki for some reason, and refuses to return to Ganker where he belongs. Other than he who declares you can't enjoy reading the Silmarillion and play Dark Souls both, I've never seen a Tolkienfag shit on Dark Souls or vice versa.
Was he that one Tolkeinfag schizo that made Fantasy threads on Ganker impossible to discuss? He only jerks off one author because he never read anything else. I wouldn't be surprised that he didn't read Tolkien also.
Probably. Mental illness is an unfortunate affliction.
Truly.
Why do twitter trannies think their gayy social media trends are indicative of the entire human race?
Why are you posting fanfiction as if had any weight?
There are plenty of moments in Miyazaki's games when you witness greatness of spirit. Hell that happens even with pathetic quests like Diallos and Alexander.
I hate you discord trannies and everything you represent. You are all vile creatures that cannot see beauty and can only lie and take everyone else down with you.
>Witness the greatness of spirit
>And how their actions are meaningless before what we allow the game's ending to be, no you don't get to choose
how can you people play these games and then look at these interviews as if you just didn't play the fucking game and see what Miyazaki REALLY "allowed" to be dignified?
Miyazaki is obviously lying or not being honest about what game development is really like, or else his games would actually be fucking good.
you said absolutely nothing here.
Who says they're meaningless? The will and the flesh of Alexander and the warriors passes on to Coz, which Diallos managed to protect.
Go have a nice day, you vile creature.
No one in Elden Ring succeeds in protecting a single thing. No, not even (You).
I literally just proved the opposite to you. Coz lives. And I could cite you countless others examples.
Keep coping and seething.
There's no reason to believe the Jar Bairn's quest ends in anything but his corpse if you have a monkey's pattern recognition, the same with the useless lizard girl that gives you a debuff amulet.
And even if Miyazaki allowed the writer to write the end to a questline, Godwyn is still literally ending the world.
Death doesn't have to be meaningless, retard. Is Theoden's death meaningless? You fill your mouth with Tolkien without even being able to understand it.
You have been doing nothing but arguing in bad faith. You know you're wrong. We know you're wrong. Evreyone knows you're wrong.
What the fuck are you even talking about? Death is inherently meaningless, it's the end of meaning. Tolkien, a war veteran, understood this very fucking well I have no idea what you mean?
Even Tolkien would agree that if Person A saves Person B from a poisonous snake, and after they depart, Person B falls down a hole, Person A's altruism has now been rendered worthless.
>Death is inherently meaningless, it's the end of meaning.
This is the most smoothbrained middle school take I think I've ever seen
>a christian believes death is the end
Seriously, how stupid are you exactly? Are you in the double digits?
>Death is inherently meaningless, it's the end of meaning.
And you're suggesting that Tokien, a Christian, would agree with you?
Totally agree, there's really no point in saving a baby from a house fire when it's just gonna die in eighty years.
>Blaidd's strength of will and dedication to his charge are so great that he overcomes his programming and brainwashing to kill his master and instead defends her home from assassins sent to kill her
>Rya overcomes a world-shattering revelation and the resulting crushing despair thanks to the player's kindness and leaves on a journey of self discovery
>Alexander overcomes his cowardice and finally feels strong enough to challenge his inspiration, the player; He loses, but dies proud and satisfied knowing that he was able to live and die as a warrior
>Bernahl rises beyond his bitter nihilism after becoming disillusioned with the Golden Order's dogmatism and the vile depravity of Rykard's followers and is filled with righteous anger and the spirit of vengeance, vowing to strike down the Greater Will himself
Just off the top of my head, I don't know why people think all the characters in these games are just weak moping crybabies. Tons of them show great resolve and strength of character
how about the little tailor rat dude who loved his mum. breaks me hearth.
Boc is a sad, scared, weak little guy but the player's kindness helps him feel worth and pride in his work and he swears lifelong fealty to you in gratitude. I'm really glad nothing bad happens to him
>deep sorrow of a magnificent beast doomed
that was precisely my experience in Painted World. When I killed the undead dragon I was elated because he was hard, but the roar he made on defeat was so sad and full of longing all my excitement just evaporated and I was left contemplating loss. It's genius.
>screencapping your own posts
>on mobile
drink bleach ASAP
Imagine if Miyazaki made a game set in the 1rst age.
>add some item descriptions and notes
>minimalist storytelling
It's minimal alright. Minimal in storytelling.
Top. Fucking. Kek.
what they can't comprehend is the concept of archetypes and stories told via them. For normies to grasp a story it has to have concrete labels akin to a disney movie.
Agree, they need cinematic games like the GoW.
>Zoomers have low attention spans
God forbid people found out Abe Lincoln had debates that went as long as 8 hours a day.
>muh story and lore
Only trannies care about that, you play souls games because they're perceived harder than the average shit in game industry but without feeling artifically manipulated (like phone or arcade games or old shit programmed badly and full of bugs) and hard challenges are funny to win.
The real debate is if they're really the most difficult in their action RPG genre, if other genres offer more difficult challenges, etc... .
>you play souls games because they're perceived harder than the average shit in game industry
I play them because I like them both gameplay-wise and story-wise, I don't give a fuck what autistic retards on Ganker think of them
Brainlet take. Wha makes the games special is the narrative element.
I think Destiny is a perfect example of the opposite of Dark Souls. All that Lore and for what?
>The real debate is if they're really the most difficult in their action RPG genre
It's not a debate. It's people regurgitating Bamco's marketing.
soledrones will jump on any opportunity to seem deep
>shazamtrannies now resorting to screenshots of fucking youtube comments, the absolute be-all bottom of the barrel of internet "discourse," to spout their dumb bullshit
>youtube comments
Good representation of solefags
https://arch.b4k.co/_/search/image/vvOEGEEiISwbC0MSuhlKkA/
Where's your argument?
Oh no no no no no no hahahahahahahahaha
Zoomers are the ones fueling all the "lore (actually it's my fanfiction)" YouTube channels and "storytelling" streamers.
Boomers are busy replaying Arcanum and Neverwinter Nights for the 100th time.
youtube game lore, video essay and meta build channels are all one big diseased cesspool which only adds to the detriment of the hobby.
Tell me about it. There's nothing wrong with minimalist storytelling. The problem arises when a bunch of pretentious cunts start pretending it's AHXCHTUALLY VERY DEEP AND MOST LOREFUL and the whole thing turns slowly into a fanfiction circlejerk.
I'm half convinced those are the same people who never finished the games due to so-called "artificial difficulty".
Fuck you, Tarnished Archeologist, Aesier Aesthetics and the likes are great. Just because you don't like it it doesn't mean it's bad.
You can indulge in your precious fanfiction. Just don't shoehorn it into discussion of the actual game. Thanks.
That's not fanfiction, it's an in-depth analysis with a slight trace of speculation.
Imagine watching something like Solaris or Stalker and thinking people are stupid for engaging in discussion of the work's meaning. You are autistic.
I have never heard that claim on /dsg/. It was obvious from the start that it's due to bad optimization.
>uttering complete nonsonse + randomly generated name
>minimalist storytelling
The 5 doves have been tarnished, aaaaah Zigfredia...
>times were good
>then they weren't
>(you) show up
>usher in new time
>x7
fpbp, all the mad trannies came out of the woodwork
Examples of good minimalist storytelling:
>Myth: The Fallen Lords
>Myth II: Soulblighter
....
....
That's it, basically.
I adore Myth but that list is too short.
Dark Souls is a zoomer franchise, what are you on ?
Who is this guy that he deserves this Dobson level of bullying?
A borderlands writer.
Oof...ACK...Ah...That really hurts....is that what that feels like.....Wow, that kinda actually sucks....Zanzibart...You there buddy? Yeah. If you can hear me, looks like I'm finally kicking the can. Not a literal can, like, GAH...its a metaphor because my guts are spilling out all over the pla-nah I'm sure you know what I mean you were always a smart cookie. ANYWAY! I just gotta say one thing before I bite it, that's another metaphor bee-tee dubs, okay, here it is. Ahh what did doc Tern say? "Revivalign your central chakras and release traumatic stress...." Yeah that was it...Okay Zanziman, here it is. I'm dropping one more bomb on you on my way out. I ate your Pimentaco. The one you kept in the dashboard. I KNOW I KNOW! Typical, right? Well, it'd mean alot, like ALOT, if you'd just forgive me for it, this one last time.....GAHHHHHHHhhhhhhhh......
.......
......
......
This is taking a LITTLE longer than I had thought, care to do me a solid Vault Hunter and put me out of my misery? If not that's totally cool I mean I did TRY to kill you but obviously that didn't work out so well. Look, not biggie, just in horrible, agonizing pain over here?
No? Alight. Cool. Cool. ACkACkGUAahhhhhhhhhhhhhh.....Castle......AHGHHHHHHHHHHHHHhhhhhhh.....Heh.............
You should do stand up
>A borderlands writer.
I hope (for him) at least it's the first one
lead writer for tiny tina wonderland
>A borderlands writer
>borderlands 1
>theres is a vault basically believed to be the planet core from Total Recall that will bring life into a desolate world but actually just a vault of alien weaponry meaning both goals and hopes and senseless killing was meaningless and thus comedic
>borderlands 2
>HOLY CRAP I JUST MOVED THE SANCTUARY WITH MY FREAKING MIND
which one?
It was already posted, but it's Tiny Tina's Wonderland
even simpler: entire BL1 plot is "you need to do this exact step to get to the famous vault with treasure go do it" which is why it doesn't suck unlike every other game
>that will bring life into a desolate world
It did, though. BL2 is much greener than 1.
I can actually hear this in Tiny Tina's fuck awful roastie voice, it's fucking perfect.
Is wonderlands writing really this fucking bad? Still can't pirate this shit
both you and him are spot on, hearty keks/10
t. persiflage enjoyer
Good post
kek, you forgot to punctuate every sentence with BADASS but yeah this is pretty accurate.
well done
I crie
Nice! Very Nice! Now let’s see Joseph Andersons writing…
>inconsistent
BOTW detractors really believe that?
>Didn’t realize my post was in shitty quality. Here’s the entire thread.
https://archived.moe/v/thread/462890185
A borderlands writer, but he was making a joke about Dark Souls, which he loves. He never intended it to be taken seriously. Anons forget that for some reason.
>autisticly write thousands of lines of "witty" dialogue...
>...only to be outdone by some dude dropping a few "forgive me, Zanzishart" lines and letting the fans write the rest of the lore for him
He's just fucking stupid.
based and Sabaku pilled
He is correct that there's no reason to do the same thing in 5 different games, but at the end of the day Souls-games lorebuilding and story is a lot more interesting than the spoonfeeding Western games do. Like, imagine thinking the cringe handholding that God of War does interesting? The entire game is literally just walking from one cutscene to the next and the story itself is a lame pastiche of the most uninteresting parts of Western mythologies.
So you admit that souls games don't deserve any awards for story and narrative.
It's just some vague bullshit that's doesn't mean anything.
>So you admit that souls games don't deserve any awards for story and narrative.
Souls games could win zero awards for anything and they would still be good because fuck awards and fuck you for caring about them retard.
have a nice day drone
You first redditoid.
>So you admit that souls games don't deserve any awards for story and narrative.
Is there even a single universe in which a single person at any point in time suggested that a Souls game should ever win any kind of award for "story or narrative"?
>one anon says the lore and worldbuilding is great and the other says it's just fluff
>AHA so you both agree with my butthurt over some shitheap awards???
What the fuck are you talking about you clown
The funny thing is that Miyazaki has basically admitted that the storytelling in Souls games is deliberately a bunch of vague nonsense, he literally got the idea from reading english books as a kid and not understanding the language properly left him with a lot of blanks which added to the mystery of it all.
From generally just comes up with some cool boss, character and location designs first and then they add some vague lore around it to make it seem more profound than it actually is.
>The funny thing is that Miyazaki has basically admitted that the storytelling in Souls games is deliberately a bunch of vague nonsense
This is hardly a new concept. Zelda has been doing this for a long time.
What Quentin Tarantino movie have you watched that the story was a bunch of vague nonsense? The closest he got to a confusing story is pulp fiction and even then that is like 3 or 4 stories that happen out of order.
>What Quentin Tarantino movie have you watched that the story was a bunch of vague nonsense?
I'm saying your story about Miyazaki is completely invented retard.
Tarantino is a hack, never made a good movie
That was about him reading books or playing vidya in English since he didn't/doesn't understand it, not writing.
It's really not rocket science - the general gist/aim of the plot is easy to grasp. Some of the details are foggy because those games keep getting rewritten in later stages.
There is no canon lore or story or characters because the devs are retarded and rely on theories
Sure thing, brainlet. Here's your (You).
Stay mad lol
Elden Ring literally won GOTY and not your precious onions God of War Epic Narrative Story Game™, so clearly you're the one who should stay mad.
Seething
I never mentioned gow
>I never mentioned gow
It was the only possible contender and it sucks ass.
it's clearly a bait man
kek, so accurate
What you need to realize is: Elden Ring offers you two different ways to experience it.
1. If you play Elden Ring with online guides it's inferior to new God of War in almost every single way. Exploration doesn't matter, story is - more or less - clear, and combat system is simple. Remember that people used to finish ER on their first run in 60 hours? Yep, those are people who decided to ruin their game by letting others do 90% things game has to offer.
2. On the other hand - you have people who don't use online guides. Bonus points if this is their first FromSoftware game. This is ultimate vidya experience, at least one order of magnitude better than GoW:R. You don't know what the hell is happening. You don't know where the hell to go. You won't simply go for OP weapon because you don't know it exists. Hell, you have to decide whether to upgrade your initial sword - or keep hoarding smithing stones.
Yes, I too love to wonder around in games without any goal or aim. Truly the gmod sandbox autistic experience
>if you don't need handholding you're autistic
>love to wonder around in games
I wonder when people became so fucking stupid that they no longer knew the difference between wander and wonder.
>Yes, I too love to wonder around in games without any goal or aim
You typed this sentence as if you expected people to find the idea ridiculous.
>Where is my quest marker? What do you mean "explore?" How am I supposed to know where to go without a glowing neon arrow pointing me there? I need a quest marker, do you seriously expect me to just walk around?
The world is going to crumble under the rule of these retards
It has been crumbling for a century now. Babel is falling, it's just taking very long for many people to notice since the tower is very tall.
>How am I supposed to know where to go without a glowing neon arrow pointing me there?
The "guidance of grace" does just that, did you even play the game?
It points you in the direction of hard progression and if you follow the grace line and nothing else you miss 90% of the game, and even with a glowing yellow line pointing you in the "right" direction retards were still getting lost in droves and couldn't figure out that they were supposed to go to the giant fucking castle on the cliffside that's the literal first thing you see when you walk out into the game world
I personally play through Souls games completely blind and never look up anything about the game until I've seen the end credits, and this is how I enjoy playing them, but I'm not going to gatekeep the game for people who enjoy playing the games differently.
>but I'm not going to gatekeep the game for people who enjoy playing the games differently.
It's not about gatekeeping. It's about understanding that two people playing ER can have two different experiences.
Think about movie spoilers and how reading them can ruin your experience. Same goes for Elder Ring - if you know where to go, where's the good loot and what build you need then you game changes from great open-world game to streamlined experience.
I just don't agree that Elden Ring is inferior to GOW if you read a guide because just like I said people play From games for different reasons. I personally think being handheld through a game with 500 cutscenes of people talking is the most boring shit ever, which is why I enjoy From games more.
That's your opinion. Now try to look from the perspective of a person who thinks GoW is masterpiece and at the same time read online guides - for a lack of a better word let's call him "normie".
For normie there's no exploration of the world. It means he can't get a "wow, I found good loot" moment. He simply knows that he needs to get sword at location A and then go and beat boss B. There's no decision making which makes game fun. There's no figuring out the build. There's no "ok, weapon X is better but I've been using weapon Y for 80% of game so I'm going to stick to it" thought. Remember finding cool incantation? Normie, from the very beginning, KNEW there's better option.
I could go on but you should get the idea.
I still don't get what your point is supposed to be at all frankly, yeah people like different things in video games, so what?
There's nothing to explore. World is relatively small, each dungeon is the exact same thing, legacy dungeons and major locations are impossible to miss, every single piece of loot aside from smithing stones is just useless, NPC questlines are unrewarding, puzzles are fucking stupid or/and obnoxious, it's all shit. You have teleporting dogs (which were bugged and dealt like 2000 damage at launch, lol), and poison swamps, and rot swamps, and swamps, and big enemies that have 20 hit combos to subvert your expectations, and bosses with neverending attacks to subvert your expectations after trying to roll away from an attack, and enemy placement forces you to cheese everything far away with a bow because otherwise you're fucking dead
Elden Ring is so fucking dogshit, this is some Truman Show shit with how everyone praises this game to no end, it's like you're surrounded by some paid actors who want to raise your blood pressure for god knows why.
What a fucking crybaby
This is how the smartest Elden Ring defender acts like, for every 50 words he reads, he spouts a single one as an answer.
I'm not writing a "counter" to you balling your fists and stamping your feet and screaming "I HATE it I HATE it it's DOGSHIT" you worthless gay
One can wonder what is going on in the head of an Elden Ring Defense Squad member, is there any process at all? A rhythm in his brain activity? Is it his duty to defend a subpar $60 AAA open-world game?
The eternal shazamchud genuinely thinks its vapid pissbaby tantrums warrant genuine responses
I actually bought elden ring twice. once on playstation and then on PC. I got all the trophies in both version.
I had fun.
Based. I did the same. PS4 and Steam Deck.
how, i felt burned out after the 1st playthrough, had no willpower to go through everything again unlike Souls games, each warranting a minimum of 3 NG cycles for me
You don't have to do everything. I don't do the small dungeons anymore except if I want something specific. It's pretty straighforward if you do that, more than any other game because of the horse and warping bonfires.
the amount of hours I spend in games just walking around and enjoying the art and ost is ridiculous. elden ring till this day hasn't gotten boring for me. never uninstalled it from the console.
>literally got the idea from reading english books as a kid and not understanding the language properly left him with a lot of blanks which added to the mystery of it all.
Is this why japs love Book of the New Sun so much?
I don't think a single Japanese knows what that is, or would seethe at Wolfe being Catholic.
It's way more influential in japan than in the west
Why would the Japanese "seethe" at Catholicism? Never heard of Tenshi no Tamago?
Miyazaki has explicitely stated that he read English fantasy.
He never said that. Nice try, Schlomo.
He said they write the story and then remove some material so that people can fill in the gaps.
What compels you to come on the internet and lie? Every single thread it's the same shit, you slimy pieces of shit spouting lie over lie about From Software.
Go back to your Discord cave, trannie, you have no power here.
Anyone who says the story is nonsense clearly just didn't read any item description or pay attention to any dialogue. How does a community of lore hunters independantly come to the same conclusions about things that aren't directly explained in game if the lore is nonsense? Obviously these things are implied otherwise multiple different people wouldn't reach the same extrapolations based on these implications.
They don't.
Just look at all the different "Bloodborne Explained" vids out there that say totally different shit from one another.
Yeah some are wrong. Why do you watch the wrong ones, are you stupid?
Less is more
>The funny thing is that Miyazaki has basically admitted that the storytelling in Souls games is deliberately a bunch of vague nonsense
And yet it makes for great stories and endless fun speculation. That approach is actually great for video game stories.
It's almost like video games are not movies. Actually scratch that, even great movies and books leave much to the personal interpretation of the audience.
>even great movies and books leave much to the personal interpretation of the audience.
I wouldn't call Inception a great movie but there's no doubt that the reason people even still talk about it is because it's open to interpretation.
Being open to interpretation and having nothing to interpret - thus requiring making shit up on the part of the audience - are a little different. Inception establishes its rules very clearly, follows a logical sequence of events and only leaves one situation unclear. Compare that to the Souls games, which have more holes in the narrative than your waifu's hymen.
>having nothing to interpret
If Souls games have nothing to interpret then they do different players independantly reach the same interpretation as other plays based on nothing more than in-game information?
>which have more holes in the narrative than your waifu's hymen.
Such as?
>players independantly reach the same interpretation
Or they follow the same fanfiction creators. Or hang out in the same chatrooms. Or there's really no ambiguity and only one logical explanation - which nevertheless was not included in the game because From couldn't be arsed.
>Such as?
You're asking me to tell you what isn't in the game, i.e. doesn't exist? That's a bit of a fallacy, isn't it?
I asked you for examples of plotholes not to prove a negative you retard.
yes, and it’s kino every single time
Dark Souls games don't have real concrete lore and you can't convince me otherwise. The devs write random descriptions with a vague, general theme and let a bunch of autists do mental gymnastics to figure out how it all fits together.
Demon's Souls and Dark Souls definitely had concrete lore, imagined from the start and filled in with background details. So did Sekiro, if you count that. The rest starting with DS2 are just a bunch of random bullshit, reused assets and concept arts they threw together into a pile.
Read
and then read
and then fuck off in humiliation.
how dare they not write about heckin' oppressed moroninos and garden gnomes
obsessed
The thing is - he's wrong. So called "environmental storytelling" isn't anything new.
In fact it was pretty common in era of text-based adventure games (fe. Zork). You had some storyline but to learn what's actually going on you had to read descriptions of different items. Sounds familiar?
If anything, new action-packed games revolutionized storytelling in late 00s. DeS or DS are actually counterrevolution.
People who think the way Souls games tell story is new haven't played any RPG made before 2005.
You can't have environmental storytelling without an environment, asshat. RPGs always relied on text for storytelling.
Look at Ultima and go from there
Bro like 80% of the story told in old RPGs are told by environment because the games couldn't use its limited space to accomodate NPCs talking at length. Have you ever played a game like Secret of Mana or Link to the Past in your life?
I don't play console shite, sorry
>Ultima
it was so good bros. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvfovSsy4B8

I don't know why this makes people mad when the guy was A) doing some good-natured ribbing and B) loves these games.
because his ribbing is written just as bad as his stories. the natural reaction is disgust.
Sounds like you just can't take a joke to me.
thing is 99% of vidya stories suck ass back when they were made by nerds, and now they somehow suck even more now with a team of 'creative writers' being given free reign
souls style story can be interesting to delve into from time to time, but it never tries to overtake the gameplay. These writers need to earn their pay and actually come up with something decent if they want to shove it in your face every 5 mins
Good takes.
video game stories in general are trite bullshit, so I enjoy FROM's implied/visual narratives
Correct take.
ITT: A lot of retards who have no idea wtf they are talking about.
This thread is pathetic.
people who try to pivot and act like souls storytelling is "smart" and "minimalist" are the same people who watch hour long made up lore videos on youtube. doesnt sound very smart to me!
Nobody ITT said From storytelling is smart. Except yourself that is.
I don't think Souls story is fantastic or the best but it's certainly better than a lot of AAA games. Especially any game made by Gearbox studios. As far as storytelling is concerned, Sekiro is Fromsoft's best game imo. This is not to say it's the best story but Sekiro tells you a narrative in a more straightforward game than Souls or Bloodborne. I think that Elden Ring and Bloodborne have deeper lore though.
Still have the courage to show your face in here?
Daily reminder.
Reminder that C-Team didn't manage to write a better story than a borderlands writer, even with the help of GRR Martin.
Get fucked lol.
He is called winkler not goldberg, nice try
That's the author of the article...
Embarrassing. No wonder you people think there's no story in From games if you're this stupid.
Cope.
TES games have no pathos nor gravitas, everything feels fake, meaningless and videogamey.
>TES games have no pathos nor gravitas, everything feels fake, meaningless and videogamey.
This is where I get annoyed with you Soulstrannies. If you unironically think Souls games are anywhere near Morrowind levels of lore and character development you are absolutely mental. I love Souls gameplay and I think the lore is interesting but it has nothing on the world building and narratives in Morrowind, hell even Oblivion and Skyrim (yes casual babyshit TES) have better narratives.
Skyrim is liquid shit, I will never touch the rest because of it.
The main storyline of Skyrim is shit and was intentionally cinematic to appeal to as much people as possible. Most of the other storylines, especially the Dragonborne DLC where pretty good imo. I have put hundreds of hours into the game and only redone the main story once.
OH nonono why didn't this game spout 10k lines of exposition to me in a 8 hour long cutscene or talk about the boss's favorite color. Help me Snoyman.
Zanzibart is KINO and i'm tired of pretending its not!
I hate how this board makes me notice problems in things I like
Zanzibar… forgive me…
From Soft is truly amazing, the amount of seething they have generated from western cuck developers is off the charts.
Souls games aren't about story. It's about beating hard obstacles and enjoying the atmosphere of the world around you.
If you want Story just play TES
The story in From games is miles better than in TES, it's in a completely different league.
Kek yeah sure. Are you talking about the story that YouTube told you it exists or the actual story you witnessed in the game?
No argument.
Exactly. You don't make a game to showcase your skill, you make a game to communicate meaning. The things you mentioned are meaningless.
>no argument
Actually it's an argument. It's like saying you loved a movie you didn't watch and think it's the best because you watched a YouTube video telling you how deep and amazing it's.
I played all the games. No argument.
The games don't have a story. If they had one there wouldn't be videos with millions of views trying to create a story out of the lore. Do million of people just not know the story of the game they played?
>Do million of people just not know the story of the game they played?
Dunno, I understood most of From stories just fine and no youtuber fanfics were needed. Perhaps try playing the game and find out for yourself?
>The story in From games is miles better than in TES, it's in a completely different league.
I don't like nuGoW or any other movie game and am normally a defender of From's games, but this right here, this is some retard shit you just said.
You're either a moron or gay.
You are the moron from my perspective.
The story is not spelled out directly. You failed the IQ test, sorry.
If there was no story then you wouldn't have videos explaining it to people like you. Checkmate.
>You are the moron from my perspective
I'm not taking this from a hooknosed conniving altmeri piece of shit. TES is better than Souls in story telling both in direct narration as well as worldbuilding and indirect narration through books, dialogue and simple observation.
Not just reading fucking item descriptions.
Actually play a TES game next time gay.
>seething
tes is very boring, played out high fantasy schlop that only a teenager would find compelling
souls (at least dark and demons) are more creative, and though narratively they aren't that impressive at least in those games you can choose to ignore the story and dialogues
I played Skyrim before Dark Souls, my first From game. When I bought DaS in February 2011 (yes, I remember the date, that's how life changing From Software games have been for me) I put down Skyrim and I never finished it because compared to Dark Souls it was liquid shit.
Dark Souls raised my standards for videogames.
The story in TES is generic fantasy boring shit and is told in an even more boring way.
>ive played souls games since DeS and the story is fucking boring which ironically is because im kinda of a brainlet
At least you're aware.
Demon's Souls is still king, by the way.
Dark souls 1 is literally hot garbage though Atleast mention 3 or bloodborne.
Dark Souls 1 is good. They're all very good but some are better than others. DeS and BB are the best, then immediately after these you have DaS and Sekiro, then you have ER and DaS3, then DaS2.
No way Dark Souls is "hot garbage" or 3 is better than it.
Its fucking not. What was the actual story of DaS1? The premise is awesome, technology and imperialism that will be the end of us all but really it wraps up with you killing yet another boss and is given a binary option A or B without having an impact on anything.
Dark Souls 1 fucking sucked.
It's like you played a different game.
TES games have a functioning world and living story. In souls you're already past all of that since the world is basically destroyed.
Ofcours it's a good way to make the development foucs more on combat, level design and rpg elements rather than programming a whole other world with towns, economic and socail system, races and conflicts bigger than the player character.
Not one single TES game has a good main story. The lore is great, some of the side quests are very well written, but never once has TES main quest been good.
lol what story? go kill three rats in a lady's basement? even something like the grey fox was garbage
Someone post the image, you know the one.
Thanks! I can leave now
ER is the new DS2, I love it.
I will forever have comfy DeS threads in my memory, but you will only experience brainrot.
Your mistake is lies in believing I actually give a rat's ass about what this shit board thinks about anything.
Get out of here then. You can continue loving ER on reddit. Here we value critical thinking.
No, I don't think I will you salty sperg. I'll stay here for as long as it makes you fucking mad.
Reddit has caught on and blasts ER more and more for the poor design.
Only Twitch and Youtube comments are save spaces for neogamers.
'Member when Dark Souls writing was actually good enough to have an emotional effect on you?
no, not the heckin pupperino
elden seethe
>NOO NOT LE HECKIN PUPPERINO
Sif was never interesting.
Yeah, I remember Bloodborne and Demon's Souls just fine
Bloodborne is just as nonsensical and unfinished as the rest.
Only DeS and later Sekiro had proper writing.
DaS is all about letting beta testers do the work
This is the moment i could relate to because killing best human friends PEPPERS make me cry
yes
Of course I remember, that was today when I last played Elden Ring.
>want to replay elden ring
>have the same feeling I get when I want to replay the entire souls series
it's just not reasonable
I'll definitely play again when the dlc comes out but fuck, it's crazy just the one game would be like replaying demon's souls, dark souls 1, 2, and 3 in order straight through
These are my favorite games but that would quickly make them my least favorite.
It's just too stretched out. Later locations from Altus onward could be cut in half and other straight up removed because it's just filler.

>"duhhhhh who dat, how me supposed to know who dat"
"how the fuck would I know I'm not her handler"
FromSoft doesn't have to make a proper story, just enough random shit for VaatiVidya to come up with stuff to narrate and FromDrones will swallow it like the galons of semen Sasha Grey swallowed in her carreer
You're like 100 posts too late with that bait, man.

The golden rune 1 is almost worthless at the start of the game and it's a complete joke it never gives you a higher tier runes even in Mountaintops. I'm autistic enough to have 600 Rune[1] tbh

FFXIV trannies are the Redditsaw man equivalent on Ganker. Mods should unironically band you gays.
Millennials got confused and thought that incessant yapping dialogue full of ironic observations and excessive swearing was good.
He is correct, From's storytelling is garbage, and the fact that FromDrones can't refute what a Borderlands writer said about their precious lore is hilarious.
nobody plays souls games for the story
Fromsisters I don't feel so good...
It must be lack of hrt soulsister. I can donate some.
Most video game writing is atrocious. Why would I want to waste time listening to a tragic villain backstory especially if they don't get brought up ever again? I just want to play video games and watch a director's failed attempt at philosophy, comedy etc....

moron
This random fag mindbroke millions of soulsdrones.
I can tell that souls formula is getting stagnant. I would like more npc characterization or major characters to get more fleshed out since Miyazaki is Ganker. I was disappointed that ER came with the same emptiness as the other souls and I like soulsborne games. Bloodborne came close but it fails to give life into some npcs. I'm not saying we need to bombard the game with cutscenes but to give more dialogue and thoughts into these characters instead of killing them off.

Holy shit.
This is the contrarians god.
Huh, explains a lot actually.
Another day, another discord trannie invasion wave to push back. It's been over a year now and they're still seething over ER and From.
Man this chud/borderlands thing is really the only cope fromdrones have, huh? Pretty sad ngl.
>post zanzibart over and over ad nauseum for months to own the fromfarts
>they point out that it's literally all you have
>"FROMDRONES COPING HARD LMAO WHY ARE YOU FOCUSING SO HARD ON THE ZANZIBART THING HUH HUH"
Jesus christ lol
Yes he is. You have contrarian fighting to defend the lore and the worldbuilding yet they have no idea how easy it is to do. I write d&d campaigns and you will have people picking up on random stuff I had no intent behind and then I let them build the content. You have to mix pre written and post written so they never feel like your making stuff up on the spot but it's pretty easy to improvise lore after they give it to you.
>You have to mix pre written and post written so they never feel like your making stuff up on the spot but it's pretty easy to improvise lore after they give it to you.
Basically. The problem with From is that they purposefully make the available content incomplete to artificially create an environment of non-answers, which is shit writing, whether it be a video game or a DnD Campaign.
It's to make you use your imagination and draw your own conclusions about some things and has been explicitly stated to be done for that specific reason due to how Miyazaki would read english fantasy novels as a japanese kid with imperfect english and would fill in the gaps he couldn't quite translate with his own imagination, and he wanted to recreate that feeling for the player but some people instead interpret that as laziness because they have no imagination
>I write d&d campaigns and you will have people picking up on random stuff I had no intent behind and then I let them build the content
And this is literally the greatest method of story telling, whatever your players come up with will always be better than whatever you can come up with.
My favorite part of the Elden Ring discourse has undoubtedly been the seething western devs who are assmad that their zoomer game development tactics are getting mogged by based fromsoft.
>muh UX
>ugh I have to open an equipment screen to equip stuff? This is freaking unplayable trash
It was hilarious
A battlefield 2042 developer out of all people complained about the UI
The irony is legitimately mindblowing
I don't usually get tribalistic with this kind of shit but pretty much any AAA western dev complaining about other devs' UI is laughable, so many of them are so hideously fucking ugly now and littered with 14 million tutorial popups to explain their unintuitive shit
Ubisoft open world map marker game design has irreparably damaged the video game industry
its really over for trannies and their distorted doctrine. humanity will never accept it.
Everyone I've talked to who enjoys the souls-games occasionally make a meme reference to whatever is going on but genuinely don't give a fuck about story. I think they did come up with a good innovation, a jap game where you can completely ignore the retarded story and not actually miss out on anything.
Meanwhile Japanese porn is peak porn.
There are two types of videogames, one kind is a digital rendition of a game and another is an interactive form of media with a ludic element but with a prominent narrative element too.
>Borderlands writer trying to criticize anyone's writing
There's a certain lack of self awareness here
Elden Ring really buck broke some of you, huh? It's okay to be bad at videogames, you know.
>It's okay to be bad at videogames, you know.
You may tell yourself that, but the truth is you'll always be a shitter.
Nice projection, anon. I feel sorry for you.
Yes. I liked Souls and Elden Ring but I don't care about the story in any of them. The Souls Youtubers are just annoying gays that will pump out a 12 hour long "in depth lore" video about any fucking thing said or done in the game. Just look at Vaati's channel, shit is embarrassing.
Part of the problem is that a ton of time has been spent trying to dissect the ones with bad or nonsensical stories, i.e. DS2 and 3, or the interesting but overly vague ones i.e. Bloodborne and Demon's Souls. Dark Souls 1 and Elden Ring are the only two that are more or less completely clear about their sequences of events, DS1 particularly. Not much of that game is cryptic or hard to understand, the story and lore are just piecemealed out into a lot of item descriptions and it makes more sense the more of it you read
>DS1 particularly. Not much of that game is cryptic or hard to understand
Considering that to this day people still think that "time is convoluted" I wouldn't be so sure. The element of inevitable decay (kegare) went over people's heads.
Friendly reminder that Soulstards argued the low framerate in Blighttown was a narrative mechanism. So yeah.
That's just a way to handwave the multiplayer element, there isn't really anything else to it. But yes people forget that entropy was the main theme of the game, mostly because the sequels retconned it and made it so the first flame is cyclical and just reignites itself forever for no reason
I've been posting in these threads since PS3 Demon's Souls 13 years ago and I've literally never seen a single person say this once
>I've been posting in these threads since PS3 Demon's Souls 13 years ago and I've literally never seen a single person say this once
I've been posting in these threads, admittedly, since Dark Souls 1 was still a console exclusive and I've seen that take at least a dozen times. Which anecdotal evidence trumps which?
In all seriousness, I think part of the reason for all the mad rationalisation of the game's flaws was the fact it was indeed a console exclusive. Platform loyalty is a cancer.
Well anyone who claims that is dumb, it had bad framerate because it was an enormous contiguous zone and it wasn't optimized very well so the hardware couldn't handle it. I don't think many people would seriously argue that Dark Souls 1 had flawless performance
>I don't think many people would seriously argue that Dark Souls 1 had flawless performance
Enough of them argued the poor performance was intentional, anyway, to stick in my memory.
Ah yes, I remember that one too.
Reads like sarcasm to me but even if it wasn't one retard 10 years ago is hardly indicative of "soulstards" spouting dumb shit like that seriously
That's fine, it's indicative enough for me.
Regardless any player/fanbase is going to have retards and they should be mocked, Souls games have more of them than is typical because of the style of storytelling they employ and becsuse a few of the games do just have genuinely poor, nonsensical writing and people tried just as hard to magic up some nonexistent meaning and depth for them when it wasn't there, but that doesn't mean the handful of them that do have legitimately good writing suddenly don't as a result
Discord trannies are too stupid to understand irony, color me surprised.
>we were only pretending to be retarded!
No, he is retarded, but he speaks from himself, not for him or other people.
Learn to read. You are the one who doesn't understand irony.

No, the point is time is convoluted is a wrong translation, the correct translation is time is stagnant. Stagnant as in a stagnant river. Like the water in Mibu village in Sekiro.
All the games share the same idea of "kegare" but because of a bad translation the bad attribute of the Age of Fire in Dark Souls got lost. The first flame IS cyclical in Dark Souls. You reignite it and start the cycle again, according to the wish of Gwyn. Or you start the Age of Dark and stop the stagnation.
>The first flame IS cyclical in Dark Souls. You reignite it and start the cycle again, according to the wish of Gwyn.
It is explicitly not cyclical, Gwyn's quest is a farce designed to trick an undead into burning itself in the flame to keep it lit a little longer because he was terrified of the end of his own age. After that there is no more fuel to reignite it a second time, the whole point was that you end up with a heat death of the universe either way, but you can choose to keep the beautiful lie of a sunlit world alive for a bit longer if you want to
No. If another undead gathers all the souls again he can sacrifice himself to restart the cycle again. It can go on indefinitely but it's stagnant, something that is not conveyd clearly in the translation.
I like how they do the adaptations for the most part, we have many memorable dialogues (Hawkeye Gough), but they dropped the ball on some translations. Ranni's quest too, for example.
>If another undead gathers all the souls again
The ones that you burned in the lordvessel? There are no more lord souls
It's a cycle of death and rebirth. The souls you burned will come back.
This is why I said DS2/3's retcon ruined the interpretation of the first game. The lord souls don't come back in the context of the original story, only four were ever found and no new ones were ever discovered or created, Gwyn resorted to burning his own soul in the first flame to keep it lit in a last ditch effort to stave off the age of dark, amd it's barely enough to keep it going. New lord souls don't just appear at random, the ones that exist are the only ones that have ever existed and once you burn them they're gone. The idea of them reappearing for no reason and everything being an endless cycle did not exist until DS2
The four lord souls were originally found in a single fire, and in Dark Souls 1 you collect those four lord souls back into a single fire. Did you think those four lord souls just got burned up or something when you did that?
They were found in the first flame a thousand years ago and have significantly diminished power by the events of the game, and you burn them in the lordvessel to open the way to the first flame. When you get to the first flame, Gwyn is using his own lord soul as fuel to keep it lit and it's barely embers at that point despite the soul itself telling you it's "a powerful thing indeed." Everything that was burnt is gone now, do you think Gwyn would have resorted to essentially killing himself to keep the flame lit if there were any other option? Don't you think other lords would have arisen if the lord souls weren't fixed and more could be created or found?
Think back to the intro. The world was originally devoid of disparity, then the first flame appears seemingly out of nowhere and suddenly the world is dynamic. Clearly without the four lord souls and the first flame, the world is lifeless and stagnant. So what's going to happen after the first flame fades the the four lord souls are extinguished? The world will return to how it was. Yet it didn't remain that way before, so why would it again? The cycle was always implied from the beginning, DS2 just confirmed it.
The first flame was an anomaly, and the attempt to recreate it once it started to fade was a catastrophic disaster. The fact that no other lord souls ever appeared after the initial four leads me to believe they're the only four that exist, especially considering their affinities. Nito and the Witch of Izalith's souls represent death and life, and you burn both of those in the lordvessel. Gwyn's soul is more vague but seems to represent light and power, which are intangible things that are clearly finite by nature. The dark soul represents humanity and the physical, dark sorceries and pyromancies are literally weaponized humanity and they have physical weight to them. When Gwyn's light soul grows weak, the dark soul grows stronger, and due to the dark soul's nature as physical and tangible and the light soul's nature as intangible and sort of conceptual, when the dark soul becomes powerful enough its effects seem to irreversibly overtake the light soul, and since you've burned all the other souls by that point anyway, where else would you find fuel for the first flame especially considering it's already gone completely out in an age of dark? And would anyone in an age of dark, say a brainless hollow or a darkwraith whose whole motivation is stealing other people's souls and humanity to keep themselves strong and alive, even want to relight the flame?
Are you not familiar with the Asian doctrines of reincarnation and the eternity of soul? Just because the souls are used as fuel it doesn't mean they won't come back.
Reincarnation in Dark Souls 1 is a bad thing, that's the whole point of the undead curse. The more you die and come back, the more of yourself you lose until you're eventually a mindless hollow with just enough of a soul and memory inside you to desperately want to be a person again, which is why hollows attack you and not each other presumably. They want what you have and try to kill you to take it, which is why the undead curse got so bad and kept spreading
>which is why hollows attack you and not each other presumably. They want what you have and try to kill you to take it
So it's not their reincarnation that makes them attack people it's their desire to regain their humanity. Which is weird, considering before the discovery of the first flame, there was no humanity, and everyone was hollow by default, but they didn't kill eachother for humanity then did they? Funny how you stumbled onto the realisation that Dark Souls is a buddhist allegory but without actually realising that's the conclusion you arrived at.
No one existed before the first flame. Go back to the intro you mentioned, the first flame created disparity and with it life and death, before it appeared there was nothing but eternally lifeless and static stone dragons and archtrees
>No one existed before the first flame.
>In the Age of Ancients the world was unformed, shrouded by fog.
>A land of gray crags, Archtrees and Everlasting Dragons.
>But then there was Fire and with fire came disparity.
>Heat and cold, life and death, and of course, light and dark.
>Then from the dark, They came, and found the Souls of Lords within the flame.
The first flame predated everything but the dragons and the archtrees
"They" always existed, the first flame didn't create them. Technically life, death, dark, and light all existed before the first flame, it's just that they were indistinguishable from eachother, all the first flame did was create disparity. "They" came from the dark, not from the flame, they already existed before the flame did. Notice how they look identical to how hollows look in game. The natural state of man, or "they" as the intro calls them, is hollow.
Dark didn't exist before the flame created disparity, anon. The flame created light and dark as the intro clearly states, "They" came from the dark because the dark is humanity's natural state
Yes technically you can't call something dark if there's no light to compare it to but what I'm saying is that these creatures always existed down there, and then when the first flame appeared it created the disparity necessary for the area where they always existed to be described as dark, but fundamentally the light level of where they came from hasn't changed from before the first flame appeared, it's just that now there is a distinction between the low light level area they existed in and the high light level area where the first flame appeared. Thus "they came" from the low light level area to the high light level area. Sadly this topic is a bit confusing to discuss because basic words like light, dark, life, and humanity have very specific connotations in this setting and I'm trying to use both the setting-specific meanings of these words and the real-world meanings of these words.
The distinction between things.
>what I'm saying is that these creatures always existed down there
They didn't. Nothing existed but the dragons and the archtrees, then the flame appeared and created light and dark, and humanity formed from the dark. It's why humanity is literally pieces of the dark soul
>Sadly this topic is a bit confusing to discuss because basic words like light, dark, life, and humanity have very specific connotations in this setting and I'm trying to use both the setting-specific meanings of these words and the real-world meanings of these words.
It can get confusing for sure but in this instance humanity and the dark are synonymous, the dark soul is the essence and genesis of humanity. Thus when dark was created with the advent of disparity, humans then came from the dark
>humanity formed from the dark. It's why humanity is literally pieces of the dark soul
Except "they" weren't born with pieces of the dark soul already in them, they came to the first flame and found humanity within it. Had the furtive pygmy not decided to share it with everyone else, the vast majority of "they" would have remained as they were, soulless, hollow husks. This is literally the only distinction between "gods" like Gwyn and "humans" like the player or Solaire. "Humans" have humanity, or the dark soul, while Gwyn has the light soul, but they both started off as "they". The only reason "humans" are so much weaker than the "gods" is because they divided their power while the "gods" horded it. Fundamentally Gwyn is the same species as the player. Humanity and the dark are not synonymous, humanity and the dark soul are synonymous, there's a difference. The dark soul is called humanity for the sake of a play on words, If they literally lose their humanity they metaphorically lose their humanity. But "they" were not born with humanity, they discovered it within the first flame, just like Gwyn wasn't born with the life soul.
>The dark soul is called humanity for the sake of a play on words,
The dark soul is called humanity because the item, humanity, is very literally tiny pieces of the dark soul which are the essence and primeval state of humanity. The little black bedsheet ghosts you find in the Chasm of the Abyss are larger pieces of the dark soul that have gained sentience, Pursuers touches on this and probably has the most important item description in the game
>Sorcery of Manus, Father of the Abyss. Grant a fleeting will to the Dark of humanity, and volley the result.
>The will feels envy, or perhaps love, and despite the inevitable trite and tragic ending, the will sees no alternative, and is driven madly towards its target.
It's not just the distinction, it's the different things themselves.
No, it's the distinction. The things themselves aren't disparity, it's the difference between the things.
That's a poetic way of saying that different things came to be.
If I light a fire in a cave did I create the darkness?
What does that have to do with Dark Souls? You cannot explain everything in DaS with reality, it's a creational myth.
What I'm asking you is if I enter a cave and it's pitch black and then I light a fire and suddenly I see shadows on the walls, were those shadows there the whole time or did I create them?
I would say you created them but it doesn't matter.
It does matter, the shadows were there the whole time, introducing light just makes them visible.
That's not how I see it.
The point of the age of archtrees is that neither were there, it's not really supposed to make sense. The absence of light is naturally dark with our understanding, but the first flame appeared in a world where those binary concepts didn't exist on a metaphysical level and created light and dark, life and death, etc. hence "and with fire, came disparity"
What do you think disparity means?
>The element of inevitable decay (kegare) went over people's heads.
This is basically the crux of every Fromsoft story, and I think the reason people find From lore so confusing is because they miss this detail which is basically the key to understanding anything about the lore in any of their games.
Zanzibart bros, our meme...
urgh I dont feel so good.
Miyazaki has got to get to the bars before closing times, why waste time making up lore for your world when retards on reddit will do it for you and then some youtube gay like vaati can just copy paste all the made up reddit lore and pretend it's real?
>FB IMG
Post that decimated fromschloppers.
>shazamchud screencapped his own dumb post from a month before Elden Ring came out and posts it 14 months later
Dang fellow fromsharts, we're well and truly btfo this time
Cool, cool, but I refuse to take such an easy win. Can you please properly address the argument presented in the screencap?
I don't like souls games
>have dialogue lines that clearly and organically explain relationships and events without feeling out of place
>this is bad because... IT JUST IS IS, OK?
grow up
Threads like this make me realize that Ganker needs to admit Kingdom Hearts has and always will be the greatest video game story ever told
i dont play or watch disney crap
holy shit bros. its a year later and elden ring still get daily threads. truly unmatched.
It doesnt matter, fighting placidusax, noticing that 3 of his 5 heads have been cut off to signify the domination of the 2 fingers and marikas golden order, and then letting that fold into the rest of the information about the game world, is far more interesting to a lot of people than just having a character tell you that, or seeing it play out in a cutscene. The "plot" is irrelevant as long as you let the player make those conclusions themselves. The way lore is presented in Fromosftware games makes them feel archeological, and the novelty of that narrative style has yet to wear off.
You could fill an entire game with bosses like that and I would never get tired of that gimmick. Shit's always great.
K I N O
Quirky Marvel-obsessed writers SEETHING.
Hehehe Bird Perverts am I right, Zanzibartsisters?
Isn't that guy the cuck who wrote borderlands 2 or 3? I can't remember.
Point is, Malenia's my wife and I will use her thighs and asscheeks as my pillows.
Why do none of the lightning weapons scale with faith in Elden Ring? Not even when you infuse them with lighning
they scale with fucking Dex
>this knight.....from a far away land....may have done something at some point....
Whoa, truly next level story telling by From Software.
I wanna know more
>dont write any real story
>better than 90% of modern goyslop
im fine with it
Call it "lazy" all you want, simply hinting at things and letting players draw their own conclusions will always be far more enjoyable than the 967th "we're all just human on the inside" story that has the same effect on your brain as junk food, feels good for a second, then you're left unsatisfied. The truth is the story my imagination invents will always be more appealing to me than the story your imagination invents.
so Im guessing its over for zanzibart fgts? absolutely destroyed in this thread.
Zanzibart is actually a cool name and him being a "Myrmidon of Loss" actually sounds badass though
Myrmidon of Loss is the guy seeking forgivdness from Zanzibart. You don't even know the lore omg.
