I've played Double Dribble as a kid, it wasn't that bad.
Although I admit that I've played it mostly for those fancy dunk animations randomly showing on screen and funny mascot dances during half-time show
NBA jam was a huge fucking deal. it literally made billions of dollars in arcades. in 90s money. with fucking quarters. that doesn't even include the home releases.
it came out the same year as Jurassic Park, which was the highest grossing movie at the time.... and it made 3x as much fucking money as that.
If you can have a good game by making it ridiculous and unrealistic, then it can be translated well, retard. Who created the rule that a sports game needs to be realistic?
I disagree, there are ton of good basketball vídeo games, soccer/football is even more free form and even that has had plenty of good titles, especially Winning Eleven.
I think when it comes to retro, particularly before the fifth gen, you're right. NBA Jam was fun as hell but two on two not five on five, so not typical of the game, whereas as far as I remember baseball and football games tended to have full team play even on NES. In those sports the positions are more specialized.
I agree that it took long for us to get a proper simulation of the sport, probably until the 5th console generation if I'm being generous... but thankfully we still got a ton of good video games before that, even if they felt less true to the real thing. I recall loving Arch Rivals on Genesis as a kid, and still do today to be honest.
>basketball >take two steps from mid-court and sink free, higher scoring shots >too free-form
Real basketball fucking sucks and I think we got close enough with older games. I enjoy timing shots. No other sports game has that shot feeling. Golf is always bars, football is nothing, and soccer games are lame.
I think that one is only fun because how fast and aggressive it plays. That and the funny tackles/violence. Arcade type of gameplay suits sports best.
That said I still don't know where the enjoyment in football games comes from. You don't do anything other than hold up or pass and there's not really mind games. You just pick a random play and hope your opponent isn't ready for it. There's no tactile feeling to appreciate in those games.
Can't think of any simulation sports games that were fun other than maybe the look of that fifa game. Aren't most football games more realistic than arcade?
Does nba street count towards basketball? Because that shit was fire yo
Ya this was good and so was madden/ncaa. I could never get into hockey or soccer though

it's the same as soccer really isn't it ? Just players are using their hands instead of their feet. NBA Jam was awesome
Not really something I lose sleep over.
I liked the mini game in Rescue of Dino and Hoppy.
Basketball games got good in the late 90s. Live 98, Shootout, and Courtside.

And it is one of the least realistic basketball games ever made. So...?
Gonna need some citations on the billions claim.
>And it is one of the least realistic basketball games ever made. So...?
why does this matter?
>Basketball is something that has never really translated well to vidya
Severe lack of critical reading skills on Ganker these days.

Nba street vol 3 is the best.

Any sport can be great in vidya as long as creative liberties are taken with the rules. Sports sims were gay then and they're gay now
Lakers Vs Celtics and the NBA is still the best BBall game out made so far.
You have to consider sports games to just be their own totally different thing from the sport they are based on.
This game is odd because the US release came first and the Famicom one later.
one of the dumbest posts I've seen on this board

NFL blitz was fun and I'm not even from America.

NBA Jam remains one of the greatest games ever made. NBA Hangtime is also awesome.
