Fricking around with this game's combat has taught me a lot of cool shit. Like how apparently the camera switches during combos depending on the order of pin activation, so you could do the same exact combo but buffer a few inputs and it'll have a different angle because of the order you activated the pins. Or how you can do reversals like it's DMC for some reason. That said, I have no idea how to combo with the Trip Wire or Time Bomb pins but I’m hoping to figure that out as I go along.
I also really like the character dynamics so far and I think I’m starting to get an inkling on what Rindo’s issues are, which could be interesting to see.
Also, NEO TWEWY thread I guess.

Happy to hear you’re having fun, anon. NEO’s the kind of game that rewards you the more time you spend exploring its mechanics and characters and that aspect is why I always have a blast revisiting it.
    >I have no idea how to combo with the Trip Wire or Time Bomb pins
The thing about Trip Wire pins is that you actually have multiple way to ensure that they hit. You can launch enemies into the air/knock ‘em down and chain them when they’re getting up, do wallsplats to ensure that the chain will hit them, hitstun them and then chain em, and more. The cool thing about Trip Wire pins is that they not only increase the damage of your further attacks (which you take advantage of with psychs such Heavy Slugger and the Fire Mashup attack) but if an enemy is weak to the affinity of the chain, you can do 2x damage.
Another cool thing is that if you launch an enemy into the air and then catch them with a Trip Wire pin before they hit the ground, they actually still become susceptible to all aerial Beatdrop prompts. With certain set-ups, you can abuse this to get a ton of Groove.

Ooh, that’s cool to hear. I’ll keep that in mind.

NEO was great but it needed another few months of development. It was just battle, cutscene, battle, cutscene, over and over. Needed a Tin Pin or something to break up the repetition. Seems pretty likely that one was planned looking at the bonus day.

Honestly doesn’t bother me to hear that considering how fun the combat is so far as well as me actually liking the dialogue and character interactions a lot.

Did you know that you can actually do collisions from the very beginning the moment you get the Massive Hit psych?

Holy shit, I didn’t know we had straight up God Hand stuff too.

Time Bomb pins can actually set each other off. If you set another one of your time bombs within the same blast radius of another bomb, it will instantly trigger, increasing the size of the explosion, turning them from passive tools into great defensive and offensive options. You can do this to make some insane combos/crowd control options. A lot of what the other guy says about the Trip Wire pins also applies to Time Bombs as well.

And Bomberman apparently. This game is sounding more and more nuts the more I hear about it.

I'd be interested in seeing a reaper's game in a different city if another game ever gets made. Most likely won't happen since Shibuya is basically the big modern town in Japan, and the odds of them looking at hot spots in other countries is next to none.

            Anonymous

I personally wasn’t impressed with the Pork City dungeon since a lot of the progression just boiled down to "use unbranded pins" against the same handful of Noise you’ve already fought. I do appreciate the expansion on Neku’s characterization, though. I also thought that Panthera Cantus was a mechanically lame secret boss, just two previous bosses stapled together as recolors. At least Felidae Cantus gave you a whole new mechanic to account for.

              Anonymous

Honestly, Panthera feels less mechanically complex compared to either Tigris or Leo Cantus since it’s messing the mechanics that made both of them stand-out.
              >having to account for Konishi’s shadow on Neku’s end while trying to fight her as Beat
              >pulling Taboo Noise into the glitchy black hole
              >manipulating the location of Taboo Noise in Leo’s fight in order to take advantage of your puck-boosted finishers
              >Sho having the same resistances as Taboo Noise and even absorbing them to transform
Between that and a lot of the structure of Week 3, I can’t help but wonder if OG TWEWY was rushed.

Both TWEWY games are pretty rushed and low-budget when you start to look at them a bit more but they usually do a pretty good job at hiding that by spacing out the progression of your pins/enemies just right and highly stylizing everything. I honestly wonder what a TWEWY game with an actual budget and proper development time would look like.

I know a lot of people say they want this sorta thing but I can't say I'm totally sold on it. The designs of the characters are already made to be really iconic and that wouldn't really last with them having mismatched random outfits. They could maybe do something like whatever brand you're wearing the most of gives a specific full outfit they'd design from that brand so it works well but I also generally don't like the idea of being forced into specific appearances because of how I like to play since it can go wrong very easily.

                Anonymous

Maybe they can do what Tales does and give you several alternate outfits for you to unlock as a side reward.

They could make it like the first Xenoblade so you can choose any outfit mix to be visible independently of what you actually have equiped. That would be the ideal.

Either of those would probably work, it's just how much effort would go into the designs versus how many would be available I suppose. At any rate there is a ton of potential for different outfits waiting to be explored, it's even in the concept art.

The thing about Heavy Slugger pins that the game never tells you about is that you can stop the combo strings early to produce quick Beatdrops as well as prevent sharks from entering back into the ground. They also allow you to strafe once you get to the rapid punch combo string, which makes them pretty handy for avoiding attacks in comparison to some Shockwave pins.

you have mash, other mash, charge move, other charge move, rapid fire move, other rapid fire move. and they're on miserable mmo cooldowns so you can't even use them freely, and the DROP THE BEAT shit making it clear that you should just cycle cooldowns one at a time. most melee moves will have your character fly at a billion miles an hour directly to the enemy so spacing might as well not exist, especially since you're wrangling a cluster of 6 morons and your main defensive option, unless you waste an incredibly precious slot, is the worst dodge roll ever created
yes you can do combos. i could also play blazblue in training mode if i wanted to just do air juggles. as a single player action game it bored me out of my skull regardless of difficulty setting, what moves i had, how i approached combat or whatever.

          >you have mash, other mash, charge move, other charge move, rapid fire move, other rapid fire move
I love how you purposely don’t include all of the different effects these moves have as well as what properties they have on enemies.
          >and they're on miserable mmo cooldowns so you can't even use them freely
Ignoring the fact that you have, like, three methods for recharging pins throughout fights, Water pins get Take Five (recharges pins at a much faster rate when not using Psychs for a prolonged period), multiple psychs only rely on you to inflict a status ailment to get a Beatdrop (which you can augment with Ailing Enemies), and more.
          >most melee moves will have your character fly at a billion miles an hour directly to the enemy so spacing might as well not exist
          >rex enemies that can swallow up your character and unleash an AoE roar with a huge hitbox
          >rhino enemies that straight up null attacks from the front
          >chameleon enemies straight up turn invisible and the lock-on off

          >the worst dodge roll ever created
I unironically see this as a good thing. Fast and intense games in NEO’s style actually have plenty of room for learning new strategies and approaches and proactively controlling situations without necessarily needing to react more quickly to stimuli. Reflexes aren't the be-all end-all and in NEO’s case, situations like this create a lot of depth. You don’t want to deal with Noise’s bullshit? Make a deck that makes it so that you don’t have to.

The dodge isn't even bad. Even Rindo's is more than effective for most situations. It just won't handle everything because positioning is the other very important defensive option intended to be used, alongside specific pins if you wish.

it's alright, like I said before Beat's inclusion works because he serves a role in developing another character, and the returning reapers are also fine I think. Neku's stuff is pretty shameless though.

            Anonymous

The point of Neku is that outside of providing the party with another pin and having a special Beatdrop Groove boost interaction with Rindo, he doesn’t fundamentally shake up the game mechanically in the same way that most of the other party members do (Beat with Soundsurfing and 200% Mashups, Shoka with multi-pin wield and Killer Remixes). Throughout NEO, Rindo has a bad habit of riding others' coattails and seeing them for their performance value first, personality second (Minamimoto, Beat, Neku when he was seeking him), especially if it's something he's heard about them from other sources. Neku the 'Legendary Player', Nagi having a 'bunch of pins', having Swallow tell him that it’s a good call to team up with Kanon after being initially skeptical of her, etc. AKA, others' opinions. Hell, he even flat out says that they can’t leave the Game without "Neku" when he gets captured on W2D2, showing that he has no faith in himself and others to survive on their own strengths.
While Neku does help out a lot when it comes to contributing to the gang’s overall victory, he isn’t the instant "I win" button that Rindo had previously come to regard him as. Hell, he even gives Rindo the wrong kind of advice that goes against the lad’s entire character arc. Like anyone else, he’s just as fallible and for all of Neku’s immense power, he falls victim to the Soul Pulvis just like everyone else within the UG. He’s basically one of the final tests for Rindo, character arc, to show him that he can’t just overly rely on other people to carry him through and that he has to do more to achieve the very best for himself.

              Anonymous

I get his purpose, I don't understand why every single time in these threads I mention how I dislike something was handled I get spoonfed the point of the story. I fricking know, but I think needing Neku to cap off the whole arc isn't necessary. by the time Rindo takes charge with Beat in the party having Neku come in and do the same thing again is just redundant. any character with intimate knowledge of the UG could've delivered the same dialogue about the time powers, they just decided to give it to the MC of the last game to subvert expectations when he isn't the problem solver that he was in the first, while also dangling the fan service carrot in front of our faces with the anticipation of his return. A brand new character could've served the same role, but they purposely went for the fan service route instead, which is why I think his inclusion is shameless.

                Anonymous

I don’t see how a brand new character can fulfill the same role as Neku did considering what he accomplished in the last game, so Rindo beginning to overly rely on him makes sense to both returning players and people who haven’t played the original given how hyped up he’s been.

the world is a large place, to bring everything back to a handful of familiar individuals seems counter to the whole message of the first game. this game has been running for 104 weeks, they could've easily made up another legendary figure who has survived the entire duration of the game that isn't aligned with the ruinbringers.

                Anonymous

but why not use neku? yeah i guess it fan servicey but it also fulfills that role. He was already hinted as the legendary player before throughout the game. Fan service stuff is shameless a lot of the times, i know but i dont think its so bad since this game is a direct sequel and nekus character was already completed in the first one

                Anonymous

his character was completed which is why 'expanding' the ending of the original with cutscenes full of reused assets to justify killing him for 3 years was pretty shitty

                Anonymous

And his arc remains completed even within NEO. He basically acts as an extension of Mr. H’s philosophy towards Rindo. Mr. H’s words is generally great life advice that still applies to the themes of both games but Neku’s specific application of it boils down to telling Rindo that no matter what happens, he needs to just let the chips fall where they may. To make the most out of a bad situation. And while that works great for someone like Neku, his application of Mr. H's advice is exactly the sort of excuse to defer to authority that Rindo has been blindly grasping for over and over the entire game, which is shown prominently in his convo with Haz. That he should just move on and try to accept the outcome but Rindo actively rejects that to take the ultimately harder but better road for everyone involved. To take responsibility for his actions and fight hard for what he wants instead of just letting things just pass over. Rindo is a deliberate inversion of Neku as a protagonist. What works for the latter isn’t going to work for the former and vice-versa. And that’s perfectly okay.

The switch version has co-op. It's decent, though not on the same level as Tales of co-op. Neku's partner has 3 pins available to them and you still build the fusion gauge by attacking at the same time. The partner can move around and dash, but they're also invincible so you just spam attacks with them.

People arguing about the difficulty in both TWEWY games are always funny to me because both games can be easily broken/made more difficult due to how open-ended the mechanics are. It also just depends on how you build your deck since one pin deck that’s good for one enemy type won’t necessarily be good for the other.

a disappointment in nearly everyway, the original is a classic that I still look back on fondly, NEO was just boring. I understand the combat couldn't follow up on the original but the story didn't have to be so ass

Yeah, the game is fantastic. It’s honestly impressive how they give you so much stuff to play around with even in the beginning.
    >using Massive Hit to turn enemies into projectiles
    >using wallsplats to open up enemies to the Aerial Assault damage bonus
    >stopping Heavy Slugger’s combo string early to prevent sharks from entering back into the ground as well as get a Beatdrop prompt early
    >using Azamaru to pull off reversals on enemies
    >using Firestorm to extend juggles/aerial status on enemies
    >darting Lance Lunge’s finisher to catch multiple foes at once
    >taking advantage of Force Round’s piercing abilities
    >the entire Mashup system
    >controlling multiple party members from afar using pin buffering tactics to set up particular combos
    >using Vehicular Assault’s ability to leave lingering objects behind as an defensive knockback tool
    >having Time Bomb pins set each other off via close proximity
    >can chain up to five rounds from the start
Reminds me a lot of just playing around with different pins in the original.

The director is obviously going to praise the main writer anon, do you expect him to shit on his own product? Doesn't change the fact that NEO has multiple mistranslations in the secret reports and in some missions and has normal dialogue replaced with dumb memes and references to Ru Paul's gay Race. Matt Furda's modus operandi is injecting shitty memes and gay references into everything he works on, he did the same thing to Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. The localisation is still garbage. Keep coping EOP.

Nah, I think they definitely overplayed the returning cast, because the whole game they're dropping them in to show how cool they are and pointing out how the new cast doesn't know them. And every single time without fail, the new cast makes wrong assumptions about returning characters, so now the new "development" for that character isn't even that they develop as a character, it's that the new characters' misconceptions be cleared up so that they're brought up to the same baseline they were at in TWEWY.

Sho literally abandons them, Beat had to be straight up rescued by the Twisters, Uzuki is currently suffering under the Shinjuku Reapers’ rule and has to actively stand up against them, and Rindo actively straight up disobeys Neku in regards to his time-traveling, not even getting into how he also gets one-shotted by Soul Pulvis like everyone else.

I have. A lot of what you said doesn’t even make sense within the game. Take Beat for example. In the first game, he was always (understandably) prone to going into a panic when things seem wrong at a glance, to the point that Neku had to calm him down from going off into a frenzy and potentially tripping himself over in response to what’s happening. In NEO, this is flipped. Now he’s the one who helps the party to keep calm and lift their spirits up when things are going to hell and his emotional intelligence really gets to shine here, as he (correctly) surmises that the Shibuya Reapers won’t just leave things as they are. His penchant for cutting straight into the heart of matters is still there from the original game but applied in a different manner. Take his convos with Konishi and Shoka for example. In Konishi’s case, he doing it because he’s trying to rile her up into going into a berserk state and make her slip up to get Rhyme back and in Shoka’s case, he’s doing this because he’s aware of her true feelings and to cause cracks in her mask. Because he’s been there before.

it's generic because you have a dodge roll, move cooldowns and air juggling as a replacement for depth, like spider-man 2 and the nu god of wars

      >insist that their game is the best around with no flaw whatsoever and that every other follow-up can never compare

      >will b***h and moan about how the previous characters/their incarnations were cooler/deeper compared to later casts/incarnations while completely forgetting how they could be viewed as cringe even back then.

Honestly, you’re not wrong. Reading through this thread, a lot of the complaints just boil down to whining how it’s not like the original in every way or that the combat is thematically weaker, which is a take I heavily disagree with.

          Anonymous

          >that the combat is thematically weaker
It always baffles me whenever I hear someone say that because Beat’s entire inclusion alone disproves that.
          >acts as a mediator that dissipates tensions within the party and brings the other members out of their shells more
          >this translates to his inclusion including 200% Mashups, an improved dodge roll, and Soundsurfing, showing that he’s mechanically supporting the team as well, even if he’s not as physically strong as Sho at the moment
This is far from the only example too.

            Anonymous

getting powerups from the character works in intertwining that character into the mechanics of the game sure, but that still doesn't mean that the combat is thematic. What about Beat's inclusion makes Rindo more of a decisive person combat wise? it doesn't, combat is a team effort, there's nothing there that makes me believe that Rindo is becoming a better leader because everyone's actions are their own in the fight, they're just working together. The first game forced Neku into trusting others, so much so that half of your health bar was someone else's, and you'd have to co-ordinate fights between both Neku and his partner. He couldn't even SEE his partner, and had to trust in their ability to handle their end of the fight.

              Anonymous

That, and it just doesn't really gel with what the story portrays the characters as. Like they couldn't even give Sho something unique that made him particularly stronger for the short time that he's there, like how most RPGs introduce temporary party members that can totally eclipse your party's stats to show how far you have to go.

He vaguely has a bit more HP, but otherwise everyone else passes him up even though by plot he's stronger than the whole party combined. Doesn't really make you feel that lost when he leaves after week 1, when the party acts the most crestfallen they could be.

                Anonymous

You just had an entire pin taken away from you in a game where all of your party members are tied towards pin. You are actively being weakened just by him not being there. It’s why Beat’s inclusion is a welcome one since, despite him not being as strong as Sho, he’s still able to provide another button. Hell, Week 2 in general is a huge difficulty spike for a lot of people and a lot of that has to do with the fact that you’re left with one less button until you get Beat.

                Anonymous

You lose a pin, and specifically, it's whatever was going to be your 4th strongest pin. That doesn't feel like losing what the plot establishes Sho is, either by how strong he was in TWEWY, how strong he seems in this, or how strong the party thinks he is. You have a minor inconvenience that any warm body can and does fill.

I was expecting Sho would bare minimum have super high stats, ideally have cool unique moves that show off how above you he is like how Joshua in TWEWY 1 had that full power moveset when he gets more serious. Even in plot, he was a crutch for the new party as they get their feet wet, but he doesn't feel like that at all in gameplay.

                >You have a minor inconvenience that any warm body can and does fill.
                >losing one of your main attacks in a game with cooldowns is an inconvenience
At this point, I can’t fathom engaging with you any further because of how you seem so willfully blatant to ignore what the game presents to you. Even ignoring Sho as a party member, the game also introduces several more stronger Noise types, including one that’s noted to be a wall against most players. Hell, it’s arguably more difficult since the W2D1 boss in OG TWEWY since that one just requires you to get behind the rhino while in NEO’s case, the chameleon is surrounded by several other Noise, can turn invisible, shoot lasers, and unleash close-ranged electric shocks. You can try to act like a tough guy as much as you want but the chameleon boss is infamous among new players for a reason.

the point is that sho should be massively, ridiculously stronger than the other characters but he has similar or lower stats and his pins aren't anything special. you have to ignore the story and believe this giga chad with years of experience is equally as strong as 3 beginners who don't know what's going on. the story and the mechanics completely ignore each other.

                >similar or lower stats
All of his stats are higher than the party’s, especially his HP and Defense. He also has one of the best dodges in the game, gives you access to one of the most useful psychs in the game (as well as collisions), and teaches you several mechanics within the game. Hell, he’s even the face of the game’s hard mode.

Wow, what a colossal difference! Nevermind he's also a picky eater that doesn't like the best food in the game, so as any of them grow at all he's already falling behind.

And starting pin? You mean the thing you can immediately equip onto anyone else? There's nothing about Sho that's inherently that impressive, and if you are doing Hard/Level 1, even the extra HP/Def barely matters in the cases where it can come up.

Losing him just does not feel like how plot says it should. You could lose Fret and it would feel the exact same.

he's strong defensively and weak offensively to give the player a cushion to learn the game with while not one shotting every single early fight. at a certain point it's ok to prioritize the difficulty curve over representing a character's power correctly mechanically.

is this your first time playing a JRPG where the powerful dude from before joins your party and he's weaker
yeah, it sucks that he isn't as strong as he was portrayed in the story but you can't really do that without throwing the balance of combat off

I'm saying plenty of other RPGs do that better. He's only around during the start of the game, where his entire plot role is as an overpowered crutch that carries the team the few times he appears to help them. If there's any point in a game where it makes sense to have an overpowered temporary character, it's the beginning.

Otherwise, it just falls flat that they fluff him up so much when he proceeds to be absolutely nothing special while you use him. It'd be like if in FF7 in the Kalm flashback, Sephiroth wasn't extremely strong, he was just roughly as strong as Yuffie when you first recruit her.

fair enough, though i agree with the other guy saying that him having higher defenses makes him "reliable" while still not letting you blast through the week, since you do have him for an entire week and you still need to engage with the mechanics. could've been done better but i don't think it condemns the game

And he is an overpowered temporary character since his presence gives you more than triple the defensive capabilities of the other two combined. Giving the player an overpowered offensive crutch at the beginning that nukes all the enemies instantly is a horrible idea because it prevents them from learning anything about the combat and would not fit either the character, the setting, the writing or the story. Your FF7 example is entirely transparent and isn't comparable whatsoever, aside from it not being an action game the Nibelheim flashback in the original game is several hours in and not intended to be a tutorial.

Even when playing the game casually, he still ended up being stronger than the others when I fed them. Hell, when he comes back in Another Day, his stats are already equivalent to yours despite the time gap. (173 ATK, 161 DEF, 291 STYLE, which are higher numbers than Neku’s). He’s perfectly capable of keeping up with the Twisters in the post-game and the Secret Reports even imply that he still has some of his Taboo powers but chooses not to use them when he fights with the Wicked Twisters, because Shoka says Sho isn’t any less powerful than Reaper despite being a Player, and because Sho effortlessly erases several Plague Noise in the Final Day’’, meaning his stats in Another Day may be his real stats.

Funnily enough, his AD stats actually change depending on what your average party stats are at the point he joins back, so they'll always be similar/higher than your party. If you get him with everyone at default stats he makes a gigantic contribution to overall party strength.

              >What about Beat's inclusion makes Rindo more of a decisive person combat wise? it doesn't, combat is a team effort, there's nothing there that makes me believe that Rindo is becoming a better leader because everyone's actions are their own in the fight, they're just working together.
Because Rindo’s arc isn’t just a matter of being more decisive. In the original game, the crux of Neku’s character arc is learning to hear what others are saying and take their perspective into consideration, hence why each partner has their own unique mechanics to learn. In NEO, the crux of Rindo's issues are his unwillingness to take charge and put himself out there, which is primarily expressed in his decision paralysis and fear of responsibility. Thus, the game forces the player to learn to manage the team and keep track of their resources and when characters have recently attacked, something which grows both trickier and far more rewarding as you're forced to manage more people as they join your team. Individually, a pin/party member might not be seemingly useful/strong at first glance, but with proper synergy and management, they can become a force to be reckoned with, which is something that Rindo has to gradually learn so that he can’t just overly rely on one guy to help carry him and the others through. This incidentally really fits with the in-game goals the respective Games/cities, with Shibuya prioritizing individuality and that leading towards influencing others with your art and passion while Shinjuku promotes teamwork and thus being able to work with very a wide variety of people to better develop your own social skills and work towards a collective goal. It’s why Sho leaving the team feels you just had a limb torn off. It’s why unlike the original, the entire team HAS to eat, you can’t just feed one guy and leave it at that. And unlike the original, the final boss doesn’t piss all over that.

party management is not combat, you can't argue combat is thematic by pointing at every mechanic that exists outside of it. is the party management stuff thematic? sure, but battle mechanics are not. Combat itself is thematically closer to the first game, in that you alone cannot solve everything, with the beat drop system existing as a different version of the light puck. If they wanted to tie Rindo's leadership or management into the game's combat, it would've been something closer to V from DMCV, but instead of Shadow, Griffon and Nightmare it'd be his teammates.

In aspects regarding leadership of a team and managing their actions, the game is literally that.

They're different modes. You do not need to dodge attacks when equipping things to your party members, and you aren't changing equipment mid battle. I'm talking thematic elements in the COMBAT MECHANICS, anons. I know you want to post epic gotchas but please read my entire post.

No you cannot play that way because if you press any person's pin while nothing else is active, you swap to them. You are not a singular person commanding separate limbs, you body jack people.

and as I've said, you hardly manage them. You press their pins and they do their thing, but that's it basically. It's more like the party is one character, you're just swapping to whoever attacked last. There was more management in the first game with only 2 people because of how the puck and stars worked, as well as the shared HP bar requiring you to properly defend both characters at the same time because the AI was incredibly simple, just doing the standard combo over and over.

                >how dare I not remember one of the core elements of the combat while trying to make disingenuous arguments

If you boil it down to just that, maybe. This is also discounting setting up for several attacks in advance, keeping track on where a party member is when buffering certain pins, being able to set-up tons of macros with Auto-Charge pins, and more. Iris Cantus, Leo Armo, Grus Cantus, Cervus Cantus, several Noise attacks, etc, make party management and positioning key if you want to be able to attack as effectively as you can. Hell, Iris even tests you on which party members have what pins.

Oh so Neku's charge kick in that clip is a good example, is it really party management to be holding that down while doing a sword combo with someone else? It's mechanically identical to holding a blue rose charge while doing a sword combo with Nero, as an example. The game feels more singular in it's approach, despite the contextualization of each function you have equipped being performed by a separate person, you feel me? The leg up it has is that you can do every action available to you all at once, but as your webm clearly demonstrates, alternating between moves with more traditional combo structure is better.

                >is it really party management to be holding that down while doing a sword combo with someone else?
Yes actually since the attack chaining is much more immediate compared to Nero’s and it’s far from the only kind of attack you can do. That’s like saying that the Light Puck system in the original isn’t really management since you have to time your finishers. This also isn’t getting into how each party member contributing in attacks boosts the power of the Mashup/Killer Remix, how Leo Cantus’ boss fight rewards countering his attacks with your own in a way that’s not too dissimilar to how Taboo Noise worked in the original (and how you can prevent him from entering into his armor state entirely through constant pressure), and more.

Yes because the characters are entirely separate and move and attack independently of each other before, during and after. If you let go of Blue Rose in the middle of a sword combo you won't do both at the same time. Blue Rose also isn't its own floating hurtbox that you can adjust the positioning of while doing the sword combo. And that isn't what his webm demonstrates at all either, it is meant to showcase using one member's pin for mobility/positioning to guide other attacks.

Having to control even more people at once? More complicated resource management via multiple Groove levels? These are blatant examples of requiring more active and nuanced decision-making.

Sho doesn't have a bit more HP, he has substantially higher stats across the board, one of the furthest dodge distances and joins with an entirely different pin type that has its own input, has much higher damage and can send enemies flying and introduces you to pin evolution. Him leaving takes you back a pin before you've gotten even close to matching his stats while enemies stay on the same general level, you've come to understand how combat actually works and can feel the impact from that, which makes a significant difference to how you approach fights.

                >you hardly control the other party members
You can literally control multiple members at once with the pin buffering system, with this even adding to how you set-up certain attacks and more.
                >TWEWY 1 also had multiple levels of fusion attacks.
You mean three for each that each boiled down to flat screen nukes? As opposed to Mashups in NEO, with several of them requiring good positioning and set-up to even make them as effective as they are? It's almost like when you try to argue against the qualities of a game you've played once several years ago, make consistent massive errors on every single point you try to make even down to the most important and clearly presented game mechanic while ignoring every correction made, that no one should ever take your point of view seriously, you should re-evaluate yourself and go back to where you came from.

The inputs in NEO seem more simple on the surface but you can do a lot more with them compared to the original. Take the Leon pin for example. At its core, it’s a rather simple move: pull an enemy towards you and stop it in place.
However, how you interact with this move opens up a lot of options. You can use it to stop a shark as it jumps out from below the ground, pull enemies towards bombs that can launch, juggle, knockback, or more, pull them into the pillars of the Ice Mashup for more additional damage as well as freeze on contact, pull them into the Fire Mashup to stack up damage from the lingering flames, pull them into the walls of the Electric Mashup for additional damage and DoT, and more.

I'm pretty sure the actual story of that was that the store in question just didn't have any Switch versions of the game in stock.

and a year later, they shadowdropped the steam version of neotwewy a day before persona 4's port releases

It was Persona 5, not 4. Don't forget this was also right in the middle of the deluge of ARPGs they were doing. It was the only moment where there was more than a week of a gap in releases and they plugged it up with Steam NEO.

I liked NTWEWY for a bit, but a lot of parts really grinded me down. The way cooldowns worked, there wasn't really much of a difference in trying to link them together one after another for a fluid combo vs just let loose the moment they're available to the point you're practically mashing, even on level 1 hard.

But the worst was I just hated the main character. I get it, he's bad so he can be better. But the way he's bad sucks so fricking much, lasts so much longer than it should, and where he ends up isn't particularly a huge development either. They made 30% of the game have the party mood/dynamic of the FFXV train cutscene, just absolutely rancid vibes.

Sounds to me that you haven’t been paying too much attention because there is a massive difference between Week 1 Rindo and Week 2-3 Rindo.

Someone's posted this same exact image before and I think it's still absolute shit. Those are different scenarios entirely, one of which moments before a game over where Rindo dies as their main partner abandons them and the other being against a bunch of grunts with their main partner's help.

And like, wow. What an amazing character development, he has the pattern recognition to recognize he can do the same thing he's been doing the past 2 weeks without pissing his pants. He graduated from actively annoying to boring and bland at best, only took 20+ hours.

Both of these scenarios involve Sho/Beat encouraging Rindo to take a stand against what’s happening, with Rindo buckling under the pressure in one scene and actually standing up to fight in another. Actually rewatch that scene again.

            Anonymous

Sho isn't really encouraging him, he's saying "do it yourself without help" then sits back and lets Rindo be killed without lifting a finger, because he wants to force Rindo to time travel.

Beat is helping and they beat up a couple goons together. They are not remotely similar circumstances.

              >he's saying "do it yourself without help"
Sho literally encourages him, Fret, and Nagi multiple times, always telling them to stand up for themselves on their own accord and take life by the horns. It’s a mix of that AND wanting to use Rindo’s time traveling for his own plans. Hell, a lot of his advice actually ends up being relevant throughout the entire game.

yeah i agree, sometimes just mashing sometimes works and it bugs me a little. But with mashing you dont get any beat drops which can do a lot of damage so i guess it evens out.

I think I would've liked the game more if the old cast just wasn't present. Beat served a good narrative function for Rindo's growth but I feel like Neku and rest really didn't have much a reason to be there outside of fanservice, and I don't exactly feel serviced as a fan with the reveal that Neku was basically kidnapped for years so he could do one thing in this new game. specific details like the current Game running for weeks and weeks and weeks should've been spotlighted better too, instead of being a secret report detail.

This was my favorite mission of both titles. I loved the insight you got on the NEO's reaper game, especially when you're coming in with a bunch of assumptions, thinking that the reaper game of TWEWY was designed with good intentions. In TWEWY's reaper game, the characters were already dead and they're given an opportunity to play a game with the ultimate prize of returning to life, but they also have to compete in showing genuine growth and maturity. NEO's reaper game is nothing short of sadistic.

When you realize the team leaders did not consent to this and were strong armed in and have been trapped like this for months their behavior becomes much more understandable and in that it makes Kanon that much more tragic. She was extremely strong of will to hold on to herself and not crack like fuya and motoi did. People like that are a rare breed and losing someone with that potential is a real waste and completely against what the game is supposed to be for in the grand scheme of things

            Anonymous

One of my favorite things about Kanon is that on the surface, she just seems like a femme fetale character but when you dig deeper, you get to see how much the Game has effected her.
            >get stuck in a rigged, never-ending death game
            >come to form an unspoken alliance where the top 3 teams (sans Ruinbringers of course) keep their footing by sending new players and other teams to last place
            >a couple of insanely OP kids come around and screw that whole plan up just by existing
            >while the kids do almost bring about change by beating the Ruinbringers, it ultimately doesn’t even matter in the long-run due to how incredibly rigged the the Game is and as a result, the DRS are eliminated, getting rid of Kanon’s and Motoi’s safety net
A part of her legitimately did start to resent the Twisters for all of that but she still kept it to herself because she got to know them better and see them as kids who had no idea about everything she and the others went through so she keeps the resentment to herself because it’s not fair to them and she knows it.

I like how even through she's in her twenties she still gave fret an honest shot despite him being a dumb horny 16 old and once he started stepping to her like an earnest man she actually did consider him as a romantic partner. That I'm charmed line wasn't an attempt at last minute manipulation or to spur him on towards victory it was an honest admission. Had she of libed fret would have gotten to hit that the second he turned 18

Nope, she wouldn't go that far with him that quickly but 17-18 and both of them being in love with each other it would happen. I could see it as fret not wanting to do it early because he wants to be a man worthy of her by showing he can take cate of himself by having a job and his own place to stay and Kanon would not only hold him to it but encourage him every step of the way

Honestly given these characters I can't even imagine shiki and neku immediately jumping onto bed even through shiki waited 3 years for him. Relationships worth having take time, becoming romantically involved is only step one

I think the worst part of the story of Neo is that The Game being run in Shibuya not being very interesting is actually an interesting story beat, but it relies on having read the secret reports from the first game. And the payoff to that element is resolved in yet ANOTHER secret report.

Fans of this series are in the same hell that fans of Persona 1 and 2 ended up in when they tried to shill the first Caligula. In fact, mainly what the fans are remembered for is the precise act of throwing a shitfit on twitter when the game was getting compared unfavorably to Persona 5. If that had never happened, word of mouth for NEO might not have been killed in the crib because that shit actually matters immensely for smaller name projects. Most fans of TWEWY that didn't just start shitting on NEO on principle understand this and wish they could take it back though they'll never admit to it.

Got back from Shibuya pretty recently, but I'm still sorting through all my pics and footage. The plan, as ever, is to assemble it all into a video comparing Shibuya as depicted in-game to the real city, but that video is still weeks from being done. Any requests?

More localiser fan fiction completely changing the context and dialogue

      Anonymous

      >completely changing the context
The context is the same in both images, though. The top one uses colloquialism to invite a joke (something is strange --> "somethin' stinks"), while the bottom one is a literal statement; in both scenes Beat is remarking that something about the situation is amiss, the top image using it to make a fricking fart joke or something doesn't prevent that from being conveyed even if it isn't funny

So it's localiser fan fiction. Localisers should be faithful to the script and not add their own nonsense in.

I think NEO's translation could've been a lot better but your complaint is moronic, the exchange of dialogue is interpreted the exact same way in both languages, it's a complete non-issue

He doesn't care. He will pick another at random despite all of them being explained and being told multiple times about how it's one of the very few good examples of localization in recent times. He doesn't even care about the situation of localization in games and how many legitimate issues there are surrounding it. He just wants to whine about the game and shit up threads about it, and this is a convenient scapegoat to get people on his side who don't want to go beyond the surface.

I just don't get it, even IF the game's translation is irredeemably inaccurate the incessant complaining wouldn't change anything because the game is a 3 year old finished product and square doesn't care about it

            Anonymous

you're not wrong, but to be fair any amount of whining at the appropriate time on here wouldn't enact any meaningful change either. it's just an excuse to cry about the things everyone here already knows they hate.

I told you. It's not about making the game "better" or any game better. It's getting mad that people like a thing and wanting to destroy it, either because they like something else, they want to pretend they did something, or they don't like people connected to the game in one way or another, either who made it or who just like it. It is literally that petty. Never ever underestimate how nonsensically autistic, petty and bitter people online can be, nor the lengths to which they will exert such feelings in as duplicitous a manner as possible, instead of just finding something fulfilling in their hollow shell of an existence. Freaks online will always find a way to amaze and disgust you, as an example I would not even bat an eye at the revelation of this all being a grassroots false flag operation by localizers themselves or their supporters. Far worse has happened, but the point is to not miss the wood for the trees.

The combat is great but the localization just sucks compared to the original, it's full of straight up mistakes and most of the attempts at "trendy" dialogue is just "how do you do fellow kids" cringe, unlike the original which actually felt hip at the time. Really undermined the experience.

The fusion pin allows Neku and his partner to perform greater feats together by harmonizing. I dunno I can buy the angle that those beams are just like, light magic from a pin. Not like Neku doesn't have access to light elemental stuff, and the genre certainly isn't a stranger to using christian imagery because it's cool. plus Joshua's grounded moveset is basically just a psychokinesis pin, so the player could be led to believe Joshua is like Neku, and can use multiple pins. The real indicator of his true nature is his attitude towards missions, and his relationship with Hanekoma.
