So, the dragon isn't evil, and because he's not evil, he's funding interracial porn and pro-open border policies?

Are you suggesting those policies are good, and for that, the dragon must die?

          Anonymous

Incorrect. He's not committing illegal acts and has an outwardly philanthropic, but he's still evil because his scaly, longsnouted kind are evil by default and so he commits surreptitiously evil acts designed to erode the nation over generations instead.

The premise here is that the dragon is not evil.

By saying "Well he is actually evil" you're violating the entire point of the discussion.

      >begs the question why the dragon must be destroyed in this setting.
He’s not actually a dragon. He’s the rightful heir to the throne, cursed by his sibling to embody the form of a monster (with none of the strength and durability) as part of a plan to take his seat as king. This is also why a group of relative novices (the players) are being sent to kill a fricking dragon. Everything’s a fricking lie.

      Anonymous

Clearly the king despises the dragon for upsetting the economy of the kingdom. If he gives out free food, what will motivate peasants to work? If he educates peasant children, they’re going to get ideas about having human rights or not want to work menial jobs when they grow up!

The king is pretty shitty and there have been rumblings of revolution. The dragon has begun to perform these charitable acts as part of a long term plan to win the support of the people before they attempt to overthrow the king.

Exception, not the rule. A true hero would argue in defense of something trying to change its ways, but hold that creature to its change and stay vigilant.

In fact, in this scenario it might well be that such a dragon would draw a greater threat of other chromatics who don't share its views and wish to stomp it out as an aberration of its kind.

They're huge, have scales as tough as iron, hoard vast amounts of metals, are greedy, can fly, and belch forth fire and smoke. The only foe that can defeat them is a hero of agrarian traditionalism (ie knights). They basically represent of evil of industrialization.

We had this conversation before anon, knights are one of the furtherest things away from being "heros of agrarian traditionalism"

        >knights are one of the furtherest things away from being "heros of agrarian traditionalism"
Maybe if your conception of hero is the capeshit kind.

        Anonymous

You can really only have knights as we know them in an unindustrialized kingdom though, as soon as industrialization renders mass conscripted armies feasible they're doomed to irrelevance.

When that is somewhat true, that doesn't mean they're "heroes of agrarian tradition", correlation is not causation. Industrialization killed the concept of knights because it also weakened the concept of monarchy and nobility, which was the main driving force and main perpetrator of them.
All knights had to be noble blooded or rich influental people serving the state and church, not "traveling heroes famous among farmers and in small villages". The legends were mainly told in the higher class, in order to push lords and their sons to respect the religious orders/crusades, and to support and join them, hence why the main source of the stories come from Renaissance ROMANCE literature. You think farmers liked to read and spread sappy love stories about the knight who falls in love with the princess?
Knights were heroes of feudal/noble traditionalism, not agrarian.

            Anonymous

Feudal/nobles are agrarian, where do you think they got their money? All medieval feudal economies were primarily agrarian in basis. More powerful landed knights would have a fief or fiefs of their own which they would he responsible for protecting.

              Anonymous

              >responsible for protecting.
              For taxing, you mean.
Feudal/nobles relied on exploting agrarian economy, they literally viewed those who worked there as lesser, "lowborn". Being a serf was way worse than a regular farmer, since they didn't even own the land they worked, they were the closest things to wagecucks that isn't modren. Using the police enforcers of that system as a metaphor for "heroes that represent them against industrialism!" is pure irony.

            Anonymous

            >You think farmers liked to read and spread sappy love stories about the knight who falls in love with the princess?
Yes. Medieval peasants loved feudalism. It's why they had to be literally forced into the cities to work in factories when industrialization happened.
