I never bothered to play them but they picked my interest recently.
Which ones do you recommend?

See the pic you posted? That entire series and the fanmade Remake.
Go, my son. Go now and experience true greatness!
Double Dragon 2 (NES)
Vendetta (Arcade)
Bare Knuckle 3 (MD)
There's plenty more but those are probably my 3 faves
>That entire series
4 is shit.
Double dragon 2 is dumbed down dogshit compared to SOR 4. Theres only one attack the whole game idiot
4 is good. this anon is a bitter mind washed moron. Battletoads newest release is what's dogshit. flash game parading as a battletoads game.
Pretty much any on the Genesis and the SNES. Beat-em' ups were all over those 2 consoles. Its a pretty simple and easy to get into genre but the biggest fun comes from playing with some buddies or family members through co-op. Oo-op pretty much define all the classic beat-em ups.
>Oo-op
Co-op*
Streets of Rage (4 is actually really good despite being a modern entry in a classic franchise)
Final Fight Arcade (console versions are inferior to SoR)
Kunio-kun / River City series if you are into character progression and unlocking moves but personally I like a more self-contained pick-up-and-play experience.
NOTHING made by Konami, although the brand new TMNT game is actually very good despite being inspired by Konami's shitty TMNT games
Sega CD Final Fight is good
Final Fight 2 and 3 on SNES are decent
Mighty Final Fight on NES is based
Konami has tons of good beat em ups, TMNT included. You're just being a contrarian
Streets of Rage 2 and 4
Ninja Warriors Reborn
Aliens vs. Predator (arcade)
D&D: Shadows over Mystara
God Hand
hail to the king
Why are the two girls not on the boxart but the fricking clown is?
I enjoy 4 but some of the enemy types aren't fun to fight, and the game suffers from excessive stage hazards. They took the worst aspects of 3 and doubled down on them. The soundtrack is decent but needed more Yuzo. Hobo Axel redesign also sucks ass.
Streets of Rage 1-3, but especially 2
River City Ransom
Final Fight (either arcade or SegaCD; SNES is too compromised)
TMNT Turtles in Time
Guardian Heroes
Golden Axe
The Capcom fantasy games (D&D and KOTR)
There are cool more modern games that are influenced by beat-em-ups like The Warriors, and of course plenty of new pixelshit ones some of which are very good, but tons of good old ones to check out first.
No Captain Commando?
>takes 30 minutes to beat
that's how arcade games and their derivative genres are. made to be beaten within an hour, but playable in a bunch of different ways. the good ones, anyways.
If you didn't 1CC it you didn't beat it, and you're lying if you tell me you 1CC'ed it within 30 minutes
>you're lying if you tell me you 1CC'ed it within 30 minutes
current speedrun WRs are sub 30 for SoR1
can't vouch for whether or not anon's done that but ymmv
My point is total playtime, if you can clear the game in 30 minutes without continues then you must have put at least 30 HOURS into practicing and improving, which means the game gave you a lot of value.
>grab i-frames
why didn't it catch on?
This covers pretty much all the classics (on top of sequels to these games that exist). To add some more modern games (6th gen and on):
>Urban Reign
>Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks
>Guilty Gear Judgment
>God Hand
>Dragon's Crown
>Double Dragon Neon
>Streets of Rage 4 (the DLC is worth it too)
>Fight 'n Rage
>The Ninja Warriors Once Again
>TMNT Shredder's Revenge
>Way of the Passive Fist
>Jitsu Squad
>Sifu
Then if you want to go further back on NES there's a few Double Dragons, Mighty Final Fight, and River City Ransom. If you like River City Ransom's format there's several sequels including a few recent ones (Underground, Three Kingdoms, Girls 1/0/2) on top of the Scott Pilgrim game which is like RCR with way better music and sprites but weaker gameplay. Also the Yakuza series outside of 7 is more of a modern version of RCR if you look at it the right way.
Didn't it? It's a staple in the genre, and almost every action game I can think of has attacks with specific animations that have i-frames as they play out due to a mixture of necessity (being hit mid-animation would lead to awkward interactions) and strategic usage for defense and positioning, just like how they were in old beat-em-ups. I don't think the high-level usage of throw i-frames was the reason they were first introduced, but as a way to not deal with you being hit in the middle of the throw and how that would leave you and the thrown enemy.
Thrown enemies becoming active hitboxes needs to be more prominent though.
>Alien Vs Predator is stuck on an arcade stick nobody bought
>The D&D games are stuck on PS3/Wii U/360
Worst timeline.
>almost every action game I can think of has attacks with specific animations that have i-frames as they play out due to a mixture of necessity (being hit mid-animation would lead to awkward interactions) and strategic usage for defense and positioning, just like how they were in old beat-em-ups.
You're right, I didn't think about that. I think there's also something to be said about grabs being the primary source of invincibility. I think about it in the modern games like Ninja Gaiden and Dark Souls. Many games have these "takedown attacks" That are functionally the same thing. I wish more games had the grab be the primary form of invincibility. I personally detest spammable invincibility like parries and dodges, it'd be cool to use things like grabs to handle hordes of enemies like in the arcade days.
Seconding the recommendations so far, especially the SoR and TMNT series. River City is more of a beat-em-up/RPG kind of game with actual character progression; buying moves and leveling up stats. It's much less "arcadey" for lack of a better term, but you might be into that depending. Definitely worth a look- Scott Pilgrim is in the same vein.
If you want a great free beat-em-up, I recommend Final Fight LNS Ultimate; it's a fangame that celebrates all manner of Capcom arcade games, and has over 100 characters that all play differently. It uses fighting game inputs and a regenerating "MP" bar to allow for special moves, and is a great way to experience lots of beat-em-up worlds; it's a bit of a "best of" sort of game, and has branching paths and secrets for replay value. Either way, enjoy anon. This genre is pure fun.
I only liked Ninja Warriors and Dynamite Deka 2 but that's only because I played them multiplayer.
I want to try more but fightcade only ever has dumbass idlers who never accept my requests. Someone here should organize fightcade Ganker beat 'em up threads.
The double dragon games (arcade abd nes ports). They have some of the greatest vidya music of all time and the levels all have interesting design
Robo Army is my fav arcade. Gud designs and graphics, as you'd expect from SNK.
I never understood how you were supposed to play these games. Enemies just counter everything you do and interrupt every combo with an unavoidable quick attack.
Not well designed games
>git gud
Fight N Rage if you like pulling off combos
Streets of Rage 4 if you like running through a stage trying to maintain a chain; also, risk/reward special attacks that use HP as a resource are a neat twist
Dragon’s Crown if you want an RPG
Ninja Saviors Remake if you want high production values
That should get you started. AVOID Scott Pilgrim, River City Girls, and Shredder’s Revenge. They are game journo bait and they all fricking suck.
Scott Pilgrim is ass but I don't know how you can even mention it in the same breath as Shredder's Revenge.
