It's the best by a mile, except
    >if you keep shooting with one weapon you get better with it and you can dual wield some of them
This used to get on my nerves due to not being optional, I didn't want my CJ dual wielding for RP purposes
Still, there was a level of effort and attention to detail that I doubt R* will ever give us again.
The mod scene for the PC version was also great. People converted assets from Arma (plus made some original ones) so you could mod some pretty cool planes, tanks, military uniforms, etc. into the game. Notable favourites include the one that turns the Rustler into MiG-17 with lit cockpit and exhaust; AN-225 (giant cargo plane) that you could fit a ton of stuff on; a hovercraft; and if I remember correctly there was also a submarine though I can't remember if it was actually submersible.
Everything was buggy as hell but a lot of fun once you got something working.

What's the best way to play this nowadays? Original PC version is moddable but is your typical Rockstar PC port, and also delisted and at least I can't seem to find it anywhere. Console version can be emulated but there are mods to fix the PC version anyway.

just pirate the original game on pc and mod it up. the console versions had too much music removed.

Some mods require the steam version for whatever fucking reason (e.g. controller mod)
tried on retail 1.0 but it wouldn't work

gpinput should work on every version of the game (including vice city all versions) unless something changed recently

Example? MoSt mods need you to downgrade from Steam to 1.0

You didn’t have to take every gang territory for 100%

Yeah but it wasn't fun. Gang wars wouldn't be good until TLATD and Undead Nightmare did it correctly.

For me, it’s either SA or IV, even though most seem to only like one of those. Both tend to emphasize the opposite design directions, with SA being crazy overloaded with all the silly ideas the dev could muster and then some, while pulling it all off with PS2 hardware of all things. Meanwhile, IV takes an opposite turn with its melancholical atmosphere and is much smaller and focused, but jesus fuck they nailed the NY feeling down with ridiculous amount of detail and TECHNOLOGY for 2008. Seriously, IV felt like such a next-gen game back in its day that I’m not sure if anything else has evoked the same feeling afterwards.

I mean, the sheer ambition of both of those has to be respected, and V felt just lazy and derivative after them, even though it’s still a big and polished game. And obviously 3 also deserves credit for pushing the envelope back in its day, but IMO it hasn’t aged quite as well as the later parts of PS2 trilogy.

The funniest part is that there were only 3,5 years between San Andreas and IV.

Yeah, V pretty much was just IV with a bigger world, messy plot and some disappointing technical downgrades. Ironically I would have liked it a lot more if it had been done by anyone else, but from Rockstar, it just felt like a by-the-numbers sequel after the last two releases were anything but.

The worst parts of V feel like overcompensation for complaints people had about IV.
        >It's too serious!
Alright well now nobody in the game takes anything seriously and the characters are almost all one-note tropes.
        >The world is just a city!
Ok well now the map is bigger and 2/3rds of it is empty bullshit

This game defined my teen years simply because of how much there is to do, and even as a kid with so much free time I still have never 100%'d the game. Is all that shit worth doing? Hell no, but name another game with that much quantity AND quality.

I agree but i played it recently and noticed all the clothes are the same in every store so once you go to every clothing store chain you’ve seen them all without leaving los santos. I guess its a lot for the time

what were the quarry missions? i have very vague memories of driving a dump truck while the construction crews got mad at you and picking up explosives.

      Anonymous

Isn't that the one in San Fierro where you have to destroy a load of cabins on a construction site and then bury the foreman alive inside a porta potty?

      Anonymous

That's the explosives looting mission for the casino questline, the quarry missions are completely unrelated optional side missions. At some point the quarry becomes available for purchase which unlocks a series of various odd jobs, complete those and it becomes a money generating asset.

Sam Andreas level customization and detail combined with Grand Theft Auto 4 physics and enterable buildings would be the greatest game ever made. Maybe add Red Dead wildlife into the forest areas of the map as well.

It's definitely got the most stuff to dick around with which makes it easy to play for hours on end, I've probably put around 300 hours in this game total. 4 and VC are still my favourites though

Shame no GTA will ever come close to SA because 1) it was based on the 90s which were a golden decade and 2) it was made in the 00s which were a cool decade. Rockstar could attempt another take at the 90s, but they'll never do it in a chill decade to actually make the game good.

Hard to believe that after a 10 year wait we're still going back to "completely generic one (1) modern American city with heists", except with trivially better graphics that you can't even notice outside of cutscenes, I'm not hyped at all.

    >tfw we'll never ever get reSA because of Take2's extreme israeliness
feels shittty man. SA was next after they finished with LCS, and framerate >30fps was nearly fixed.
