Before this came out there was a leak, everybody hated the leak. It came out and it was real and people hated the game's story. Somehow despite all this the game won an immense amount of awards and is now going to get an entire season of a successful HBO TV show to itself.
How does the world work this way? It was globally hated by nearly everyone but biased critics with their hands in the Sony pot. Why is it regarded highly now and why did it get greenlit for a season of television despite having a poor story which is the most important part of a show?

You can frame every single game as a success with any statistic whatsoever. If it didn't pass the 10 million sales by now they'd be referencing player completion rate or numbers. Anything to make the investors think they're on the right track. Admitting that your game underperformed is a death sentence, so you have to spin the numbers somehow.

I don't think I ruined it for myself. Loved the first absolutely loved it. I only looked because I heard it was bad, and it's real fricking bad. But I did eventually play the game and did appreciate the upgrades in gameplay from 1 to 2. Damn though if I had seen it play out how it did with no spoilers I might have dropped the game right then and there. I was pissed after seeing the leak and hell bent on not buying the game at all, ended up borrowing from a friend. I needed that cool off period though.
Very poorly written, very off character, very sloppy writing all over 2, but it really really hits home in the beginning. Like they hired a new writer and I know it was the same guy which irks me.

Companies were literally bundling the game with joystick and controller accessories, the game was also selling for less than $40 only after a couple of months of release.
Like the other anon said, the game sold on the back of the first game, not on it's own merits.
Now for the 10M units sold, we truly don't know that, usually companies count shipment as sales as well, also it took a major fricking IP to reach that in two years, the new GoW game managed to do that in just 2-3 months, Elden Ring (new IP) sold 17M in it's first month.
Shit, GoW2018 sold as much in half the time it took TLoU2, and GoW was an IP that Sony didn't have much faith in.
