You know what REALLY pissed me off? The fact that Gravity obviously still knows how much love there is for the franchise (otherwise they wouldn't release P2W chink apps by the boatload) but doesn't want to invest in a proper new MMO.

That being said, any new version of RO would be monetized to hell and back and be DOA anyways. Frick this gay earth.

Yeah, you can't make a proper MMO in the current environment, possibly never again. The wild west is over, be glad that you had all those virtual worlds to explore while they lasted - Other generations aren't so lucky.

Crusader, Monk and Esma Soul Linker were my favorites, for different reasons. Grand Cross was just a dumb giant duck nuke and Combo Monk felt more engaging relative to other melee classes. Esma Soul Linker was just a great bolter with auto-heal that shredded everything. Ghost element pretty much ensured I always got MvP on that one Rachel boss.

It's so sad that Tree of Savior didn't deliver the same experience even if they had the same team.

Aside from falling into modern korean MMO trappings, they forgot about the most important thing that made RO great: The monsters. They were just cardboard cutout gifs shuffling towards you, but by tweaking dmg, speed, 1-2 skills and defenses they made a huge gallery of unique memorable creatures who often had very iconic drops that followed no linear level progression.

The cool thing about RO was that is was so fricking hard that it tricked you into making friends.

I just liked when there were so many people playing it that you'd just randomly come across people here and there even on fairly obscure maps. It gave a lot of life to the game world.

That's the unintentional genius of it, and it only worked during that novel internet time

                >came out at the perfect time where internet communication was still novel enough for people to log in all day just to chat

bottom left pic has a very um.. interesting sense of scale.

I often think about trying a private server, but a ton of the charm of the game was the high population on most maps.

Don't bother, pservers can give you a quick character building and gearing fix, but the social aspect is not coming back the way it was. Your server can close anytime for arbitrary reasons, like the admin having a falling out with the WoE clique, cheating in items to deliberately incriminate himself so he can give the server away, then going full scorched earth anyways this is how oathRO died

For quite a while now I've been thinking about launching a Ganker server, but I fear that few people would play and that it would be wasted effort. What do you guys think?

I'm definitely up for it, but you'll have to have a high tolerance for shitposters since we do MULTIPLE schizophrenics who would flock into RO threads to sperg out on the tiniest detail for attention or validation, scaring any and all newcomers.

            >I don't even know why they canned gate of the world
Game had critical and seemingly unfixable network infrastructure problems. There were 3 betas and 1 long open beta and they could never fix the lag or disconnects. There is reason to suspect it was sabotage, because the development of GotW was fraught with mismanagement. The team who made GotW immediately went on to maker their own (failed) MMO called Lime Odyssey as soon as they left GotW. This is just my opinion but I think it's likely they fricked the game over on purpose because of Gravity's shitty treatment of them.

          >Gate to the World was great
It was a mixed bag. I played it from the very first Closed Beta up until cancellation.

Pros about Gate of the World:
          >Most faithful and best looking transition of the RO art style to 3D.
Absolutely no one else has come even remotely close to pulling off the Ragnarok Online look in 3D as Gate of the World did.

          >Immersive world
The world design was very detailed and expansive. In most F2P MMOs the world is a complete afterthought. GotW was filled with memorable locations and landmarks just like RO.

          >God tier OST
They got fricking Yoko Kanno to score the game. To this day I still can't believe it. Amazing move.

Cons about Gate of the World:
          >Unfinished combat mechanics
While the auto-attack combat did have that RO feel to it, the skill system was woefully unfinished and just not very well designed/thought out. It felt very bad to use skills in the game. The skills were all super janky and weak. Most of the time it was better to just auto attack everything to death.

          >Removal of many beloved systems
Card system was gone. Loot system was gone, instead you just leveled and evolved the same weapon for the entire game. Job branching was gone. PvP/WoE was gone.

          >Game had critical infrastructure flaws
There was intense and nonstop lag throughout ALL the betas as well as constant disconnect problems. To the point that it made me think it was deliberate sabotage by the GotW team due to their unhappy working conditions at Gravity. I have never seen a game lag and be unstable that much before or since.

The game had immense potential that was sadly never realized.

it got the art style and class variety right, even had soundtemp composing some of the music. alpha and beta looked promising as in you could farm for exp instead of just questing, and on release they even had some world bosses and potentially interesting itemization. but very soon they went full theme park with questing being pretty much the only option for leveling, instanced dungeons, dungeon finder, fricked up the class system, fricked up itemization which eventually became your usual gacha shit. last I check a year or two ago they were handing instant max level scrolls and gear boxes for new and returning players effectively removing 95% of the content. I would still recommend you try it once, just go on your own pace and enjoy the beautiful art style and music tl;dr lost potential: the game

Imagine RO but if you added a bunch of things that made it like the rigid wow-clones people went to RO to escape. Along with that, a personal nitpick was that the class path was a cool idea but they fricked it up. It worked similar to RO but depending on which ones you pick every couple of levels you'd get new moves or passives. The problem was that the mage class had one where you pick the basic one twice and you're just rewarded with a passive DOUBLE to your damage so why the frick wouldn't you do that one? But you ended up playing a bland set of skills for a frickton of the time and it made the "huge variety" instantly feel like a lie.

You can tell the team tried to make a good game, they were hamstrung by corporate execs demanding more monetization and streamlining. No other explanation for why the game seemed so polished before Open Beta before suddenly taking a turn off a cliff.

        Anonymous

Was the open beta really that different?

I wish that they, somehow, bought the Ragnarok assets again, bring the Manwa artist back to the team and remade the game.

The game really needs an overhaul, I tried it last year and it's all clunky, the maps don't really look good and so on. They could optimize a lot to make a seamless experience.

Also, the game went for too long limited to humans, they really should've let you be an orc, an elf and so on. They did add the cat race, but it's too late now. They really need to overhaul the whole thing and bring the missing stuff back, like the apartments, that were removed because of the hack and so on.

          >Was the open beta really that different?
It was the start of the themepark bullshit. All overworld mobs had their XP nerfed. All parties had penalties applied to even the slightest level difference (Your friend is level 24 and you're 25? Tough shit, he's making a quarter of the XP you make on every kill in your party). The spawn rates were gimped as well, except for mobs specifically related to questlines.

idk if anyone remembers but this broke the leveling chain all the way to 80 because many of the quests weren't done yet. There was a period between 45-50 where no easy quest chain existed, and if you didn't save your XP scrolls-you were killing mobs. There was a specific bee enemy in a ruin whose name I forgot that was the perfect mob for making that 5 level gap, but you had to grind it for DAYS because of the nerf when pre-patch, the same grind would take 3-4 hours.

I would really not want them re-making ragnarok, not because I don't want a new one but because it was clear from how they handled their Betas and launch (The founders pack fiasco and cash shop is another rant on its own) was proof that they were run by the worst kind of Gacha money prostitutes. Even if it was the old team, the old guard had the final say and they said "Frick the players for everything they are worth"

Also, I just remembered, the game stuttered a lot. And it can't possibly be a hardware issue, at the time I was playing with an i7 gen 4 and a GTX970.
If it was lagging/stuttering that bad to me, just image with other people?

I went to play again recently and my character started at level 200 or somthing. It's like it's just a streamlined adventure, instead a social experience that Ragnarok was.

The game was an absolute disaster performance-wise on OBT and in launch, too. If anyone remembers NFA, /vg/'s usual mmo clan, they had multiple attempts at a guild war shut down by the fact the game couldn't take more than 30 people on-screen at once without massive crashes AND 90 players in a single instance meant the death of the WHOLE SERVER. This was the death knell to a lot of OBT clans because they joined specifically for RO style PVPing which was impossible.

Founders packs gifted $60 of in-game currency. One 'spring dress' was $30. It was the only cash shop item for a long time. Top goddamn kek more israeli than anything Gravity or Nexon ever pulled.

                Let me dream anon.

The performance problems were abysmal. Pre OBT it was forgiven because it's a beta, of course it would suck, then it didn't improve, more people kept playing, and the quest line bullshit meant EVERYBODY was always in specific parts of the map at any one time. In CBT, at the very least when shit started to get laggy, you could just pick up and go someplace else and grind mobs for a bit, check back in later to see if things cleared up. It was equivalent in leveling speed.

It's so sad, I guess there's no saving this game anymore without a major revamp and a rebranding. The assets are great though, it can be saved, at least visually.

I'm pretty sure that the main artist was the woman that made the sprites on the original RO. But the guy who used to write Ragnarok was much better at monster design, since he was the lead artist of the game, if I recall correctly.

Yeah the graphics were great. I tried ToS only once and it was rather late into it, but it was basically unplayable, 100% singleplayer rush-to-next-objective. You don't stay in a zone long enough to remember its name all the way to over triple digit levels. I didn't see what the frick the point of the game even was.

I never tried that one. Where did it fall short?

Bad network and code optimization which creates unnecessary lag. Also it didn't help that the game is very linear and bosses are dumb as frick so they are forced to give them ridiculous HP instead of actually having decent mechanics. It's shame really because if the coding was decent it would have been passable.

It was a mixture of old school design and new ideas that had its own identity. It was legit a fun game and one of the best MMOs of all time, during closed betas.
But it had chronic problems that were very difficult to fix. 9+ years of dev time before it was first playable, old engine, the single most unoptimized game I ever played, no client security whatsover, everything tied together with LUA code.

Eventually it went the way of every Korean game, pandering to whales. They went from more players than they could possibly host to not enough to sustain a single healthy server in just a few months. They outright patched out world PvP/PK without warning. Everything became one click, convenient and auto-queue.

And once the population started to dwindle, that's when everything went to shit. You started to see things like Level Boosts, unlimited resets, instant dungeon clear vouchers, that sort of things. Everything was geared towards getting new people to the cap as soon as possible so they can join the themepark rides.

That's being harsh, there was nothing wrong with Tree of Savior's interface. It was infinitely more complex than something like Ragnarok Online but that comes from being a modern game.
          >I just wanted to ride a snowball.
I could write entire paragraphs about the issues with ToS but I feel that the worst one is the fact that they created a really complex and in-depth class and skill system that has a lot of possibilities to be explored, but none of the content is hard, difficult or challenging enough to require it. And with every patch they made it easier and easier.

iCBT2 ToS was a well balanced game. Not hard like Ragnarok, just balanced. It was the game when it was at its best.

how difficult would it be to make a brand new engine and game that play exactly like ragnarok but smoother without the input lag and network issues, i think the hardest part would be getting the sprite work to be on the same quality as ragnarok

I played RO a bit back in the day , but not as much as some so its not a main MMO in my history. However, I played EQ and even WoW and there as a lot of the same - people were still operating on "no girls are gonna game, especially on a MMO" but the genre it had one of the most sex-balanced playerbases around. Some were there to basically play paperdoll dress up, but there was also the socialization element and they raiding and whatnot. I met one of the best long term girlfriends I ever found thanks to MMOs. One of my first major EverQuest guilds was run by a husband and wife both in character and out - I still remember their character names.

The cool thing about RO was that is was so fricking hard that it tricked you into making friends.

Ironically a lot of people thought that hard/tedious/grindy = good, but really that wasn't the case and a lot of devs following it made abortions like wildstar where the intention to be hardcore fricked everything up. Rather a lot of these early games were great IN SPITE of their tedious elements. EverQuest for instance was basically non-instanced camping NPCs for hours at a time that only worked in a group , but what made it great wasn't that, it was its faction system (every NPC belonged to one or more NPCs), rather in depth quests where youd have to "Hail" a NPC and talk to them with keywords to find out waht they wanted to do (no quest log or anything until later builds of the game , an there was AMAZING world design given the tech. Dungeons had secret rooms and false halls. The "evil classes" had their trainers in the sewers under the human cities. Zones had massive variation in the content viability (ie you could easily run into something that would destroy you even if a lot of the zone was within your level. There was even a forest that wasa newbie garden during the day with bees and rats , but at night it spawned MAX LEVEL SKELETONS! You COULD possibly survive if you stayed on the path and were lucky) and lots more.

            > were great IN SPITE of their tedious elements
It's a little more complicated than that. MMOs worked because they were a socialization platform with a game attached, and the game was serious enough that real dedication was required to keep up with others. However, you can't just socialize out of nothing, and tedium is one way to encourage socialization. This is the problem with modern MMOs (or, massively singleplayer online games, MSOs): they became so easy and """convenient""" that any interaction is a pain rather than a solution to a problem (boredome, slow grind, requirement to party for a boss, etc.). Don't get me wrong: it's the WRONG way to do it, but the point is, it works. "in spite of" the tedious elements, therefore, isn't quite accurate.

              Oh god this
Party finders killed socialization in MMOs, even going up and talking to someone makes them think you're trying to scam them because of how rare it is for someone to seriously try to talk to someone outside their social circle.

I think its perfectly possible to facilitate socialization (assuming users are willing to engage) without relying on grind, tedium and the like. Socializing because the game is so mind numbingly boring without it isn't good for design or community, and a lot of forced tedium lead to low quality socialization interactions. Like I say to the other anon, sitting in a group finder yelling "LF3M for Dungeon X" isn't a high quality interaction. Now this doesn't mean that having some downtime or things that are time consuming in service of another part of the game's design, not simply tedium or grind, is necessarily bad. Aside from that players who want to socialize will do so - some make the game into JUST that and sit in cities and places with high densities of people to talk etc.

I think a lot of problem is a new generation of players who don't approach these as virtual worlds to some degree and instead are just looking to optimize everything to the n'th degree; a problem that is compounded when devs make the game tedious/grindy to the point you're just logging in to grind daily quests because every day you don't means another day added to the 2 months of constant daily-ing to get one reputation to max . Really good design works around tedium/grind/other garbage and gives options for socialization but players need to take it and meaningfully engage.

              Oh god this

Can we please stop with the "party finder killed MMO" stuff? The ability to queue and find others who want to do the same thing without sitting and yelling "LFM 4 Dungeon" for half an hour didn't ruin socializing. That wasn't a high-quality social engagement. People being shitty ruined socialization and community feeling - there's a huge difference between playing on RP servers where users choose to talk to random people, general/area chat etc..and the like.

Party finder made it too easy, before you needed at least to talk to people before making a party.

But did you really? The vast, vast majority of the time it as "LF2M need healer and DPS for thing" "I'm a DPS, invite" and similar. It wasn't like you had to have deep conversations. People will always remember the relatively rare times when people made friends / significant others, guild members etc.. but all the other times when its basically "Invite, Hi." "INSERT_TACTICAL_DISCUSSION_IF_NEEDED" "Thanks!" and little more because people just wanted to finish the dungeon, PVP match, raid or whatnot. Having to sit around spamming "looking for X for Z" from a city and hoping others see it (and both you and they need to be in those zones where the LFG channel were accessible, in many cases or in games without one it gravitated toward high densities of players like cities. So you couldn't just do other stuff in the meantime) wasn't really pushing people to actually talk to each other besides the bare minimum to form a party - at the cost of a lot of delay.

Depending on how party finder is implemented it sometimes doesn't even bother about class combinations or any sort of gear requirement. Level or having cleared the pre-quest is everything you might need. It doesn't help then as well when the content you're aiming for requires then certain knowledge and isn't 100% fool proofed. This shit can happen by forming parties as well but it's much less likely.

                Anonymous

Bad implementation always sucks. I've rarely seen one that's so bad that it doesn't balance roles or whatnot. As far as certain knowledge or execution levels, I think that's why most party finders also have some sort of custom setting where you can put a "I'm going for this rare achievement or harder mode raid boss that takes a certain tactic" party together or just for any sort of custom content. However, for the vast majority of content the default "I want to do X, put together a role balanced party who fit some very loose metrics for levels/gear/progress etc" works quite well. While I don't think its necessary to do away with the auto-building-standard version, even a game that only had a manual-invite party finding utility (where users could advertise what they want to do and others could browse and apply) would be better than having NO utility at all where you were forced to just shout your preference in a populated city zone until you got enough people who heard and met your qualifications. All the options can coexist, if well built.

The fact that ragnarok actually added a party finder function that let people request to join parties without any need to hold a chatroom up to make it 'easier'
Then the fact people almost NEVER used it shows that people don't prefer party finders.

I think that shows that most people who were still playing Ragnarok at the time it was added were used to getting along without it in the context of that particular game; it is far from universal no more than people playing Lineage 2 means that players overall prefer grindy, loss-focused PVP. However there have been many other games, newer and older that have added them and the userbase overall continues to prefer the option of their presence.

I absolutely agree, this is why I said this was the "wrong way" to do it.
However, no game has ever been able to suggest the "right" way to do it. Either they're singleplayer games with attached chatboxes a la PoE, or they're MMOs a la ragnarok or tricksters where you "need" tedium (or, alternatively, they're ss13, but that's its own thing).
                Nothing else fosters socialization.
                >I think a lot of problem is a new generation of players who don't approach these as virtual worlds to some degree and instead are just looking to optimize everything to the n'th degree
I also considered this hypothesis, but in what, 2013? Or earlier? Wakfu became free to play on the flip servers and along with Ganker, I gave it a spin. The playerbase was exactly like I remembered earlier MMO payerbases to be, despite players being pretty young on average. Other people who have tried similar newer "real MMOs" have had similar experiences. In conclusion, the problem truly is the game's design, not the userbase.

                >The right way
I think there are plenty of MMOs that don't need tedium to facilitate socialization options. There's a more delicate balance of well...options and features and then its up to the players to do the rest. There are always some players who are going to be more interested in the social dynamics , lore/story/roleplay etc.. and others who scored nearly entirely on the Bartle test's achiever section who just want to kill the big bad and do the minimal amount of talking to others to do that. That isn't necessarily a problem, but I don't think the game needs to add grindy or tedious elements to try and "make" people interact in certain ways, when it doesn't serve in and of itself The best thing I've seen is designing the game world and giving stuff to facilitate but not attempting to force socialization. Emotes, "roleplaying" stuff like (not paid for goddamn it, but actually earned in game or crafted by player) cosmetics, housing etc.. are all some elements that lean towards this for instance, letting players who are interested in socializing expand it into the gameworld; providing a good toolbox like this as well as overall solid game design seems to be the best road I've seen.

                >2013
That may be a little late actually, but I think the reason you saw the userbase was a sub-group of those who were playing an older-style game of its type. I think gametype can certainly impact things, but I do think that especially given the post WoW rise of MMOs being "the in thing" in the 2010s and the changeover that happened meant a lot of users looked at things far more differently then older days when looking at it as a virtual world meant seeking and interacting with others regardless of "necessity" but simply because it was a novel game experience.

So you couldn't just do other stuff in the meantime) wasn't really pushing people to actually talk to each other besides the bare minimum to form a party - at the cost of a lot of delay.

                >party finder killed MMO
i made a lot of long term in game friends thru LF2M. Good people actually teach another people on how to do raid or dungeon. Party Finder actually killed the social parts.

I knew a hot emo girl back in the day on the private server I played on but thanks to being a moron I messed it up big times. I later helped nuking the server abusing dube glitches with some elitists pvp homosexuals but whatever.

You could cheese any enemy using a gun walking backwards in circles. They would never be able to reach you with their attack. Dungeons were a fricking mess being totally overspawned and enemies seeing/walking through walls. The only way to get through them was thanks to buggy spaces where they couldn't reach you. I also still hate the last area being filled with mutants and robots - wtf where they thinking? The 2h loading times I also don't miss.

Some people claimed that the rendering and the netcode where tied to each other. This works in korea with 2-5ms server ping but not international. The second you had a few players on the map the fps dropped regardless of hardware. World bosses are an unplayable power point presentation.

I still have no clue why the frick there were SO MANY EMO GIRLS on mmos and online vidya from 2000-2010. I remember playing the phantasy star universe demo on xbox and it was filled to the brim with emo girls just like maplestory and gaia were. >Absolutely godlike soundtrack and sound design

I saw one of those scrolls in action, it's ridiculous. Your group just loads into the dungeon and one guy pops the scroll, which then forcefully teleports every mob into a vortex in front of you and kills them in a fountain of gibs and loot.

A lack of instanced dungeons was really fantastic. It made the world feel alive rather than standing outside a dungeon and waiting in line for the ride to start again like you're at Disney World. Just go to a funny map and wander in solo and hope you made a new friend or talk about going there in town. It was great.

    >Go to town
    >Class 2-2
    >Talk about leveling
    >Some level 99 priest(ess) in sunglasses walks next to you and does /pat
    >Somebody helps you out
    >Gain some levels
    >Get a neat card

The problem is those with attention spans want to "solve" games these days. RO eventually fell victim to this as well. Private servers are shimmering reminders of could have been, but aren't what it was and never will be.

well, thats also because the game is build upon the premise that there are at least several hundreds of players, and you dont get that player count on private servers without the admins having corrupted the gameplay with QoL et al

I still think that RO was an insanely well crafted MMO and even with the diminished social interactions I'd love a remake/remaster.

    >all the content pre satan morroc
    >sprites 4x resolution

As someone who didn't play RO back then, I don't agree, it's all bias, I feel the same about Maplestory and Latale, the latter being genuinely terrible as a game but still holding a permanent spot inside my brain for everything else about it, Maplestory being much better but still not amazing like I used to believe, old Korean MMOs were special but they definitely don't hold up, they would never work today.

    YO

Question. I have the money to bankroll a server basically indefinitely (not like that cuck who shut the Ganker server down over $15) and technically even enough to hire some coders and artists, just for fun. For quite a while now I've been thinking about launching a Ganker server, but I fear that few people would play and that it would be wasted effort. What do you guys think?

      Anonymous

Hard to say. I think it would take time. Like if you leave the server up for half a year or so and people constantly post about then I can see it slowly coming alive. But it'll never be a regular sized server with just people from Ganker.

If you have the cash, why not just roll out a barebones stable server and slowly add more shit as people start playing?

      Anonymous

      >but I fear that few people would play and that it would be wasted effort
Correct. A RO server absolutely needs a healthy population to make up for it, no matter how high or low you set those rates. The entire game was designed in the golden age of MMOs, expecting thousands of players cramped into a single server. This wasn't too bad for pservers a few years ago, where you would see 2k+ real players, even for a shitty backyard custom server. Top servers can't even break 200 people nowadays, it's pretty much over for the scene. Just like all those 2000's MMOs that disappeared from existence, the time has come for RO...

You can't. People don't appreciate or want to do any of the things these games required:
          >Working with other people
          >Talking with other people
          >Helping while expecting minimal things in return
          >Dedicating time
          >Sharing information
          >PLAYING CONSISTENTLY

In my experience meeting people in MMOs has become awful because you'll get one or all of the following
          >Sperg that sends you unfunny memes
          >Stranger that trauma dumps / overshares depressing or sexual shit although you've known them for maybe a week
          >Wants to actually drag you onto some other random side game
and then usually they're gone within 3 weeks or barely log on. It's also becoming more difficult as time goes on to dedicate time to an MMO because even assuming you had ZERO going on in your life, there's 1,000,000 shows, games, and roms to possibly distract you that are a billion time easier to get your hands on.

I end up defaulting to a group of people I met outside of the game because it seems as if anyone who isn't already part of a clique, IRL friend group, duo, or discord group is an irredeemable benchwarmer otherwise they wouldn't be available. The problem with MMOs is that the playerbase interaction went from a feature that you look forward to, to a feature you borderline avoid at all costs. You'll also never roam endlessly in different maps discovering a random volcano with 3D motherfrickers for the first time. Now we just memorize which maps have good items or quests and avoid the ones that don't.

That would be great but I have the unpopular opinion that it has to be a 1x server, because increased rate servers tend to feel cheap and to diminish the fun after just a little while. This is in great parts because the original rates were chosen to balance the skinner box effect, so if rare drops are too common that doesn't work anymore, and if you level up too fast that also doesn't work (among other things it means you can't keep your cool drops on you as long because they get deprecated too fast, making drops less valuable).

        Anonymous

I agree with 1x for item drops, but exp should be 2x or 3x because many players can't afford to poopsock anymore to get anywhere.

          Anonymous

It's a bit tricky because it changes how long an item becomes viable, how long you will stay in the same zone for grinding which affects how much you interact with others and their level range, and so forth.

            Anonymous

Also affects droprates indirectly: if you spend 1/2 as much time grinding a certain mob, logically you're getting 1/2 its drop potential and thus have 1/2 the chances of getting the rarer drops naturally.

It's been an issue since renewal due to the new damage formula and classes that made players hit harder and players HP even with high VIT builds just never actually went up much in comparison.

The higher level you get the more damage you do but your HP barely grows.

  20. 1 year ago

The absolute gimmick that bard/dancer and sages were would just not work in a modern MMO.
With how modern MMOs tend to work, having a class that casts a skill that prevents them from doing almost ANYTHING else for it's duration which is just a powerful buff that reduces cast time significantly and that's literally all it does in a party would never be played or desired anymore. Let alone Dancer which is even worse because it just reduces MP cost/ and boosts recovery. Most MMOs these days just instantly heal you up after X long with no combat, making HP/MP management a joke.
Sage was even worse, stuck with first class damage skills where it's only useful ability was being able to stop certain enemies from casting their cast-bar skills or in a game that already has elemental weapons, lets you change another parties weapon element for 20 minutes.

All three classes had one thing in common, they wanted the party to not move around much. RO had this stationary party gimmick where you had mounted tanks collect mobs for the party to kill while the party itself barely moved. Or the party moved slowly because of just how heavy the monster spawn in maps like Thanos tower would get. You'd move as a blob, slowly pulling enemies in from the front but being able to cover the back. It was important to too because of how much shit hurt.

The whole combat economy of walk-,attack- and cast-speed was very unique to begin with. Other MMOs tend to balance around fixed walk speeds (with gap closer skills), fixed auto-attack intervals and fixed cast times.

I sincerely wish that I had a computer of my own back then. Frick, I remember playing Runescape and I would've known about RO if I hung about it more, my GAIAturd sister kept fricking hogging the computer all the time. I want to experience the early thousands internet, I had a fricking dew drop taste of that elixir man. I was fricking ROBBED, and now we'll never get a genuine experience like this on the net again because of normalgays, virtuesignalling gays and greedy israeli companies

Well what did you do in your childhood instead? There are still lots of activities that I consider more worthwhile than MMOs, fun as they were.

Rode my bike, played soccer, played video games like Budokai 2 and 3 (dream game was budokai tenkaichi 3 and ultimate spiderman, but I never found it until 3 fricking years ago. It was fun, but I'm too old for the game. But finally getting and playing it was an immensely satisfying feeling), watching SMBZ, racing and running, fighting, playing runescape and club penguin, playing with toys (I had to throw away all my fricking toys 2 years ago by my mother and my sisters. I could have given them to my future kid, but to say the sentimental value those things had to me was an understatement. I am still immensely resentful and shcoked at the lack of sentimentality that seems commonplace in women). I gained an interest in art and met my first and only genuine friend who introduced me to anime, got myself a runescape GF at the ripe age of 6 years old, watching tv on cable. Crying in frustration at my grades, playing roblox and other weird and small free trial nickelodian 3d games, playing porn games and not understanding why my dick was getting hard at hot women (I played a sally acorn stripping game when I was 5 or 6, and played a game where I saw naked women and boobies. Swear that game might've had some illegal material like trafficking and I was just wanting to play shit like castlecat)
It does feel like my childhood was complete, but i never got to experience a lot of stuff too. Kingdom hearts would've been a masterpiece to experience, RO would've been great to grind in. I was basically born and raised in a mix of 90s and 2000s culture which is why I've stated to have tasted a "dewdrop". I know how genuinely fun the net was in the 2000s, and I would do anything to go back to those days. Look at how depressimg the current state of the internet is, you may find some kernals of gold but unfortunately unlike the goldmines of the past, it justs lacks in comparison.

Damn, sounds like you've been flipflopping all over without truly finding a homebase to spend some years in. Some people are sent into a downward spiral by this, but I guess one of the positive aspects of MMOs is that you get sucked in, stay and focus on one thing instead of blasting yourself with new stuff every week.

How bad would this game be to try it now for the first time?

I had a friend growing up that LOVED this and wouldn't stop talking about it but it was already dying by the time I was friends with him.

Is it really just grinding mobs basically infinitely without any questing and sense of world or lore?

If I were to start today... Private server or official?

I also love other stupid grindy games like old runescape and some other massive grindy non-mmo games.

      Anonymous

i dont know any private server that isn't shit but i think you can probably have fun until you get to lvl 100 in official servers, it's at that point that not having any gear and not being p2w starts making a big difference

If you want an "''authentic""" experience, there's Payon Stories, aka old and dead OathRO. Yeah, server is kinda scuffed, but it's the closest thing you will get right now, as there's literally no other options...

      Anonymous

Yeah you more or less just grind shit. It has more in common with Diablo or something than an MMO really, but I think the game has a good sense of world and lore. The sprites and environments are very charming and do an excellent job of giving the world a lived in feel and plenty of environmental story telling, despite it looking quite dated now. The game itself was just a framework for the social interactions that were the actual game though, this was a time when you had specific servers and no group finders or anything. You got to know all the people who played on your server, all the big guilds and interpersonal drama, you knew which dude had this crazy impressive refined gear or ultra rare card drop or whatever. You can't make a game like that anymore, we're too acclimatized to the conveniences of online games nowadays and the lack of inconvenience and struggle means that social bonding on a server-wide level really isn't possible, you can only emulate that feeling in a raid-group sized setting really.

I remember playing a Sage and having people beg me for buffs and heals because they couldn't distinguish the sprite from a Priest. I played a decent private server for a few months recently and I don't think it is nostalgia, RO is a simple game with the most basic loop imaginable but it has the right amount of SOVL and does a much better job of making you interact with other players in a spontaneous, social fashion in order to get shit done compared to modern MMOs. I love it so dearly.

      see

it got the art style and class variety right, even had soundtemp composing some of the music. alpha and beta looked promising as in you could farm for exp instead of just questing, and on release they even had some world bosses and potentially interesting itemization. but very soon they went full theme park with questing being pretty much the only option for leveling, instanced dungeons, dungeon finder, fricked up the class system, fricked up itemization which eventually became your usual gacha shit. last I check a year or two ago they were handing instant max level scrolls and gear boxes for new and returning players effectively removing 95% of the content. I would still recommend you try it once, just go on your own pace and enjoy the beautiful art style and music tl;dr lost potential: the game

      Anonymous

I haven't played it after they ruined it with gay themepark leveling but apparently not much has changed other than the fact they leaned HARD into the cash shop business. Last I heard, there were scrolls that just cleared previously-finished dungeons for you and just gave you all the loot that would have dropped. Which is only a step above just selling boss loot in the cash shop.
Here's your I hear the private servers are pretty good, but they have gay cash shops, too.

        Anonymous

I saw one of those scrolls in action, it's ridiculous. Your group just loads into the dungeon and one guy pops the scroll, which then forcefully teleports every mob into a vortex in front of you and kills them in a fountain of gibs and loot.

thanks for those mate, are those your scans or do you have some sauce?

Not my scans, I just saved them when another anon posted the whole thing last year.

Just play Tree of Savior, you dramaqueens. It's the same game, and you can actually run instead of briskwalking everywhere

There's a pretty big community of casual nostalgiafriends that played one of the Ganker RO servers and are still in touch, the main problem it is impossible to satisfy everyone and if a few key people don't go then nobody will. It basically needs to have have WoE, but the WoE has to be on some arbitrary time that fits the WoE autists, but it also can't have all the servers open, and you also need to luck into there being another guild that's competitive enough to make it interesting, and it also needs to win the admin lottery, be 20x or lower for everyone not to quit in a week, and then it has to land on the patch level that everyone happens to want that year. This varies literally every single year, sometimes people won't play anything more recent than Einbroch and other times people want the whole nine yards.

      Plus the whole renewal/not thing.

RO just has too many old players that prefer too many different things so striking a balance that can draw the majority is almost impossible, even more when it's for Ganker or /vg/.

man priests were so good in RO. way before newer classes the standard was 95+5 vit so you had a ton of resistances at 100. you were basically a walking tank only surpassed by vit knights, and most of them were agi built. such a fun class to play because you were the most important and versatile component. ro priests were not just healing machines especially in pvp/woe.

you might enjoy it, you can usually find parties. especially in Lasanga fields and Dragon's Nest for lowbies. Fairly customized too, for example they have random attributes on gear drops called "options" switch up your build potentials.

I loved programming as a kid and used to make various bot routines with openkore.

Just read the whole thread and I didn't even play Ragnarok, but I wish I did. Instead I played MapleStory.

Why it's not possible to make one RO nowadays? Is it the number of people? Datamining? Wikis?

Times have changed too much. MMO design is "solved" and is expected to rake in big money - naturally this drives bad design decisions mandated by execs. The advent of social media also contributed to the death of MMOs since the social aspect is now outsourced to discord and other platforms. People don't log into MMOs to talk anymore, but to to their laundry list of chores.

RO was the lack of all the resources we have, and the commitment to be as restrictive and party focused as possible. No MMO in the modern era would dare to have any of the complete fluff almost every class had.

My favorite example will always be the silliest ability rogues paradise, for those unaware having three rogues with rogues paradise made it so no non-MVP mob would aggro the party. Such a neat and niche ability would never be made today.

Didn't Rogues Paradise work with just 2 rogues sitting together? Also don't forget the Rogues Graffity/Scribble skill!

Thank you for correction. It is 2 rogues, but both must have the skill and be SITTING! So even more niche and specific, also the name of the passive is Gangster's Paradise.

Ah right. To be fair RO skill names are confusing anyways since people use 2-3 different english names for every skill. Like Guillotine Fist / Extreme Fist / Asura.

I knew frick all about this game. I somehow got in to it at just the right time. Like the OST is a true sequel to Linkin park reanimated, was a blast.
This was the CS and racing games killer for quite a while, I stopped playing FPS games for it. Then got bored and returned.

What would be good is a smash bros brawl clone of RO. Not an MMO, nor that fighter they did, but very good 3D with the Guilty Gear XRD quality.

Tree of savior has nice art but eh, just the characters. It begins and ends at their "sprites".

If you need a quick RO fix I recommend Ragnarok Battle Offline, the Thief class is really fun in there. Downloads with all expansions and a fan translations are easy to find.

you never played archer class? I mean that's fine but damn. I STARTED with an archer on iRO after beta, that shit was rough. Struggling down in the Prontera Culverts, getting a hyrda card and Ora Ora and having absolutely no clue of their worth

The fact that you have to buy arrows really didn't appeal to me and male hunters are my least favorite class sprite, they just looks so.. uremarkable. Like some yodeler from the alps.

Even some solo MMO players subconsciously like having other players around. The truth is that you were not alone at all. While you didn't interact with others much, you probably liked having the backdrop of a bustling society.

Archer was a struggle, and you were either rewarded with a pet bird. Or you were making a bard/dancer for your planned wedding partner, to be the guilds dedicated Bard/Dancer couple for the Sage to free cast Deluge and the Wizard now can freely spam Waterball anywhere you want to farm for a bit.

If you ever come across a player in an MMO who would rather do random stuff, hang out or just slap mobs just cause, then make any progress. The likelihood of them playing RO is higher than you might think.

The problem with a Ganker server is that people can't agree on any of the settings.
And if it does happen again, it will soon be filled by the same people crying rivers about hunters being broken and complaining about cliques that only exist in their heads.

I hope it does happen again.

This behavior is pure sour grapes over....online friendships.....in an MMO? That's the best way I could interpret it. Why do people get mad that people form groups in online games?

It was clear from the literally very first thread, when it was obvious that the guy wasn't even willing to pay $15 per month to keep the server up that the whole thing was doomed. He 100% expected that he would make money with this. Free headgears was also dumb and the massively increased regeneration was a crutch for shitters who don't know how to play. 0/10

I like this one. You click blue orbs once you go to the warp point to unlock it and it cost a blue gem to get there from the warp NPCs. all the towns past Juno don't have Kafra warps and require you to unlock their orbs as well. nice inbetween none and all for free

I am a certain kind of unhinged. My favorite time in RO was spent on KokoRO before it died. I never thought that it would.
That said, 3/3/2 is too generous. Ragnarok Online is the kind of game that should be meandered through comfortably. This, of course, over base rate.
If you want to get your quick gearing fix you can wander over to a mid rate superman server. I'm here for the slow burn.

        This, also no @commands.

We can blame WoW for that. By its peak popularity around 2008 every investor and developer wanted to make the money blizzard was, all new MMOs copied the formula, all old ones kept making changes to copy WoW as much as possible. Themepark MMOs became the norm because of it.
Renewal in 2009 was gravity ruining what they had in a movement to copy WoW by "modernizing" the game to be a themepark "move from map to map to fight similiar level monsters that are no threat to you".
Of all the changes renewal did, that one was the most grievous of errors.

Similar to other RPGs of its day, you had to find the story. Quests were hidden in the world and you could find them by talking to specific NPCs while having certain monster drops or completing other quest lines. Not very straightforward but learning about and exploring the world rewarded you with more lore and neat loot. I kinda prefer it over handholding the player all the way to endgame with forced cutscenes.

Ragnarok is a fully organic game. If you exit one of the starting cities from the wrong portal you could end up on a map 30+ levels above your character. Monsters of different levels share the same maps. You get easy zones in the middle of hard one, and hard zones in the middle of easy maps.
You are not the chosen one, you're just a random dude. Every class has its own role, almost every skill is OP one way or another. Monsters are much, MUCH stronger than players of the same level. Either you have to take the slow path by easy soloing lower level monsters, or risky tactics that can potentially give you big payouts.

There are no corridors or set paths. You have real, legit multiple options to level all the way to the cap. Some monsters are objectively better EXP/Hour than other but usualyl give bad drops, there's always alternative spots that are slower but you can farm useful things and/or money in the meantime.

Monsters are not mindless drones that just follow and attack, they have patterns and skills and you need to approach them differently. Sometimes they sprinkle easy and convenient maps with a handful of monsters designed to catch you off-guard. Monsters can loot items on the floor, protect each other, support each other with skills, detect skills being used on them, change targets, etc.

And of course, the art direction. It's oozing soul.
Even modern RO which is considered to be not too different from modern MMOs still has beautiful sprite work. Picture related.

        Anonymous

That level of freedom is something I miss in MMOs. Everything nowadays is level or story gated and designed to shove you all the way to endgame without too much trouble. In RO, you progressed at your pace while being as safe or as risky as you wanted to be. Skip main story? Sure. Want to explore a map with mobs 30+ levels higher to find a new dungeon or town? Go ahead. Want to farm loot or grind exp? Asses your resources and pick the best farming spot. And the threat of leveling down from a lapse in judgement kept you on your toes even with normal mobs.

let say that the MMO exist but at the same time so does the guides to min/max leveling and farming.

            Anonymous

Guides always existed, games used to be grindy as shit so even then, people wouldn't burn through the game that quickly, people will get bored of grinding the same spot for 50 hours, they'll do something else even if it's not as fast.
