Zelda fans being weirdly attracted to fanfiction really turned me off engaging with the fans. The shitfit over: was comedic in a pitiful way. How do you get so overinvested in something so obviously fake & gay?

The internet can only be described as a magical place 12 years ago. It was very different. Even by 2015 it didn't even resemble itself slightly.

Folklore and theories were rife everywhere back then. People believed these things because.... the internet felt ''massive'' for a lack of a better term. It's hard to explain

The influx of 2011 newbies to the internet was obvious and malformed. The internet has yet to recover. 2007 isn't when the internet died, but when the seeds were sown for the 2011newbie.

It wasn't just Zelda/BenDrowned shit. The early 2010s were filled with so much laughably bad video game creepypasta. Now the trend has moved on where people are learning Blender and Unity to make PS1-like walking simulators.

I still can't believe he actually continued it after the KING KONG April Fool's troll, when all the morons who actually took it seriously and got invested got anally ravaged. Just found out about it near the end of last year, and honestly I feel it was utterly unnecessary, but I guess he saw a good opportunity to cash in.

How would you live even 50 years ago? You can’t be that big of a pussy. Video games are 1’s and 0’s and anything designed to creep you out is illusory. Grow up, it’s weird to be that scared of le spooky haunted cartridge designed to scare actual zoomer children. I can’t believe we are the same age.

          >picking an arbitrary year as the cutoff point
It was a gradual process and it started much earlier than that.

I would say he’s spot on.
90’s net was Usenet erotica, actual boomer humor, hobby geocities and instant messaging. I’m old enough to just barely remember this, or at least this was my view of it as a child.
Internet 2000-2007 was the golden era of the net. Accessible by most people but taken advantage of by select (autistic) groups. Newgrounds/Albino Blacksheep/ebaums/something awful/ytmnd/Ganker/yahoo groups and a forum for everything you can imagine really cultivated “internet culture” and you were either a part of it or you weren’t.
Introduction of iPhone gave normalhomosexuals and women unlimited instant access to everything and very quickly the internet infrastructure started to cater the net to lizardbrains. Everything became streamlined and normalhomosexuals started to adopt the surface elements of internet culture. 2007 is the exact beginning of the end because of this.
I would too say around 2010/11 is when it was all over. The internet was under full plebeian takeover and started consolidating into about 10 websites 90 percent of people used regularly and this transformed into an analogue of boomer cable tv, the exact kind of thing we used the internet to escape from.
There are still pockets of the net left for alt people (Ganker still remains one), but it’s simultaneously so big and so compartmentalized that it will never be the same.
In short, that anon nailed it and I would guess he is between 30-36 years old.

It's nothing to do with growing up. It's everything to do with the chemicals dumped into our water and food that trigger unnecessary "fight or flight" responses.

        WTF lol.

By 2010, Reddit, YouTube, and Tumblr were already rivaling Ganker as one of the main hubs of OC. YouTube had already been bought by Google. Ganker had already become mainstream and mootles had stopped caring. Greentexting, politicsposting, and camwhoring had become normalized. Facebook had already replaced Myspace. SomethingAwful had already gone to shambles. Newgrounds had passed its peak. Oldschool forums were already flooded by spambots. The days of Geocities, Freewebs, Livejournal, YTMND were long gone.

What the frick could you have possibly been doing on the Internet in 2010 that was so "magical"? Playing Roblox? Griefing? Listening to MGMT? You can still do all that today, y'know.

Niche forums that would have several or more posts per minute were still alive in 2010 for sure, and the couple years after too. The internet was still in the process of becoming centralized, and even in those big websites I would say the overall collective consciousness of the internet was more similar to the 2000s at that time than it is now. You don't even need to do much research to see this, just take 3 time periods, a forum from 2000 or maybe an IRC chatlog, a forum or comment section from 2010, and a discord server or a comment section from now. You're going to get usernames that are fundamentally different in style in the present and conversations that would be undecipherable even in 2010.

As with all creepypastas back when those were just becoming a thing, I think most people originally saw it as a weird bit of fun, nothing more. I'm sure Jadusable himself saw it as such. But as usual, some (usually the younger crowd) take it too far and become stupidly invested.

It refers to the King Kong video, released as an April Fool's joke after the first four Ben Drowned videos, which completely takes the piss. My sides left the stratosphere when it dropped, but apparently a frickton of people got legit mad over it because MUH IMMERSION. Notice how he didn't make a single video for six whole years after that, though I can't say it was due to the backlash. More than likely he just had his fun and left it at that, and only came back to do more videos once he say there were sweet Pateron bux to be made.

The original vids from 2010 were GameShark codes. The newer vids from a couple years ago were really complicated romhacks.
