They basically got the game right with Borderlands 1 and given how actively obnoxious 2 was of course it pisses people off.
This isn't even getting into the fact that it's been 13 years, it's the only one that doesn't suck probably pisses people off even worse.
Borderlands 1 was basically a space western, a genre I feel doesn't get enough love. You went out to save the world or fight against an evil corporation, you were there to kill shit and make money. Borderlands 2 went in the direction of 'rah rah freedom fighters' and that set the tone of the series, very unfortunately.
BL1 was at points even too bare, the lack of even basic npc interaction past >pull string >get line
really drove down the enjoyment. The atmosphere in general was really cool, and I don't think it has been even properly replicated since, but it wouldn't have hurt to get the VAs to at least read out the mission briefing

I think it was extremely lucky because of the window it came out, having an interesting art style, but also because it overpromised as frick and got people to notice. Remember their 8 BAJILLION GUNS ad campaign? I do, somehow.

First off, there aren't any quest rewards worthwhile in 3 except for the pearl.
Second, you can get quest rewards from earl's vender on the ship scaled to your level. Of course that means vender farming but at least it doesn't require you to restart the story and is probably faster overall.
I had lots of fun with borderlands 2, dont think I played anything since besides roguelikes where I do multiple playthroughs after another without longer breaks inbetween

Borderlands 2 is a case study in how to ruin a game with bad mechanics. The game is marketed at casuals, but the power curve trends VERY strongly towards turning everything into a fricking bullet sponge that you can't outskill. It goes from killing shit with silly guns to "Jesus frick, if you don't obsessively metagame from wikis, you're going to literally run out of ammo against trash mobs." Even if you completely stripped out all of the story and dialog, it'd be a game that needs a MAJOR balance pass. It's simply not fun.
Additionally, they doubled down on the humor in 2, and it has absolutely not aged well at all.
They did make OP1-3 less grindy, you don’t even need slag to beat most of it (still better to use it though). But the game flat out breaks OP7-10, several enemy scales have a misplaced integer so they get x100 stats instead of x10 stats.

No, but I really should. I started falling out of interest with FPS games at the time and I never had any interest in going back to it. I can't really say I gave it a fair try though.
I think I genuinely liked it at one point but in retrospect I wouldn't go back and play any of them.
The writing (even 2's) is really annoying at times, and the gameplay is extremely ok. There are a bazillion games that individually do action, exploration and loot better, and borderlands never did anything great by trying to do all 3 at the same time. All the enemies are so bullet spongey. The visuals range from being ok looking at best to looking like an early telltale game running on low with a sharpen filter applied to it

BL2 legitimately has some of the worst, most aggressive scaling I've ever seen in my life.
It pretty much codified looter shooters because it borrowed that shit from Diablo. I don't really have a lot against it but I can see why people shit on it, I didn't like all the tiny drip-feed buffs in 2 either like "deal +2% damage per point".
You can turn off dialogue volume in the options but it doesn't help. The main issue isn't the dialogue itself but the absolute obnoxious placement of it in the main story. You basically get road blocked every few minutes by some standing around watching people talk segment.
If you only want to experience the end game gameplay loop then porating it with a completed save might be worth it.
BL3 sucks don't even waste your time. The guns feel really nice, but everything else is awful.

Most of the complaints you see about 3 (besides the story) have probably been fixed with post launch updates because a lot of people vocal about the game only played it early on and dropped it.
It's different, while it has Tiny Tina "DMing" the story the actual story isn't atrocious compared to 3. It has a likable villain surprisingly.
Base gunplay is the same as 3, but spells offer a lot more variety on top of that. There's the multiclassing system which lets you make a ton of different builds, but wonderland's endgame right now is just grinding the chaos chamber (which on its own is a great concept, but there's no other content to use it for gearing up towards besides its 4 raid bosses).
I'm still not sure what I think about its endgame leveling system (chaos levels compared to 3's mayhem levels). It definitely does some things better like limiting 3's stupid modifiers only to the chaos chamber and making you work for your levels, but at the same time there are 50 chaos levels to go through and it feels a bit bloated right now. Then there's re-farming all your gear which can be a nightmare in wonderlands because there are so many different attributes and parts that can spawn on gear.

Gun variety is important. You get to find you favorite gimmicky gun and roll with it, build something cool that uses it.
TTWL has the opposite problem, it feels like there are only 2 guns of every weapon class and most of them fricking suck ass.

is right about some things, but most of them are optional like the collectables or straight up lies like small maps and few bosses. I prefer legendaries the way it is now than a 3% chance like it was at BL2 for years, grinding now it's not a huge waste of time and I can clear all content and max lvl a character in a 100 hours instead of 300. At least give it a muted playthrough.

If you get borderlands 3, then at least get the season 1 pass (all the dlc campaigns). Season 2 pass content is hit or miss depending on how much you like the game.
If you get wonderlands then you can get it without the dlc (it really sucks for its price and only one of them has anything substantial, that being a single new class).
But of course like any other borderlands game buy them only when they're on sale.

Some of these seraph items are just "what were they thinking" tier in terms of usefulness.
For example, the Sponge is an absorb shield which can get a maximum absorb chance of 54%. Meanwhile the Sham (a dedicated drop from Bunker) has a MINIMUM absorb chance of 77%. The Sponge has nothing unique about it besides an increased capacity and costs 120 seraph crystals to buy (which you only get around 10 per seraph guardian kill).
Who the frick thought this was a good seraph item?

It’s actually an integral part of one of axtons builds, one of his only viable ones for a brief stint, abusing a skill that gives massive bonuses to damage when in ffyl, he’d spend the entire fight going down repeatedly to instakill things

Tps is actually fairly decent, the scaling is fixed from 2. You can use a good gun almost as far as the original game let you. Characters are all pretty equal with even the most broken tps character not falling into Salvador tier. The problems with pre sequel are:
Characters constantly talking which would go on to be a staple of the series.
Too much gear is in the world drop pool so farming has no focus.
No endgame since the only raid boss can be killed 20 levels under pretty easily.
Studio shut down so there’s only one dlc that actually adds new stuff.

I want to play 3 since it's apparently the best as a looter shooter and the brown musclegirl but what little I've played of Borderlands 1 I remember being one of the most miserable, boring experiences I've had with a video game.
Should whites and greens be absolutely useless? I wish they weren't and we either had some kind of "trade-up" system so collecting lower rarity gear could be turned into higher rarities, or some kind of socket system similar to diablo 2 where lower rarity items have more slots.
Whites should be, since they pretty much exist only to demo what the company gimmick is on x item type.
Greens should be decent basically as blues are now.
Blues should be like purples and the ideal vanilla version of the weapon
Purple should be what red text blues are and etech.
Orange should be the top of the gear tree, pearlescents and seraph shouldn’t exist.
A slotting system would be okay I think, essentially being in the same part slot as accesories are currently.

Funny you say that because in 3 since legendary coms have major gamechanging abilities it made all lower rarity coms completely worthless, unlike in 2 where there were still plenty of viable blue and purple coms for everyone because they had unique stats not present on legendary coms (like +6 in a skill).
But the huge focus on damage boosting anoints really hurt the system in 3. Wonderlands alleviated this by reducing how much bonus damage you could get on a single anoint, and there are more creative anoints in general. Especially with class-specific anoints (anoint pool is still diluted like crazy and the increasing cost for rerolling anoints is super annoying).
Like always the borderlands series is filled with "one step forward, two steps back, three steps to the side" design choices.
That’s fair, the dragons keep coms are used at top tiers and they are blue or purple depending on the character.
Maybe 3s style coms should be set bonus things, so you get a really powerful effect but need a specific set of gear.

Played the first one again after who knows how many years and though it was fun playing as mordecai. Snipers are actually good in the first one. The performance on the remastered one is awful though.
Randy is an asshat. 2 was written by Anthony Burch. 3 had writing that was bad by this series standards, which is almost impressive. The humor is unnecessary but ever present. Finally the game requires actually knowing how to play to get anything done without getting stopped by “bullet sponge” enemies, and Ganker is bad at video games and has no friends

The writing of 3 is awful. Things happen in unnatural and nonsensical ways.
Take the Maya death. Mayas entire skill set revolves around her ability to hold man sized objects with telepathic power. Yet she physically grabs the character we know for a fact steals psychic powers.
The player character despite being in the room and a tiebreaker for the hostage situation does nothing.
Immediately following we get a bunch of random npcs having an awkward funeral followed by Ava blaming Lilith for her own frick up, the assembled npcs agree with Ava that it is somehow Lilith fault even when Lilith tells Maya before the mission that she should be the one going not Maya.
It’s entirely shit and bad emotional manipulation to try and force Randy’s shit e-girl fetish.

That would make sense, but from how previous cutscenes have played out the player character is absent from the scene and only watching from the sidelines. All previous cutscenes also happen chronologically right when they're triggered, meaning the player saw Maya getting dusted.
Now, if they wanted to properly portray this as happening while inside the vault, then they could have added a few extra lines from Tannis talking to the player inside. Perhaps after picking up the artifact Tannis could have said: "Uhh, something bad just happened, vault hunter. You better come back quick."
Or better yet, have the player character be visibly seen stepping out of the vault after Maya dies, but that solution would have taken effort on gearbox's part.

BL2 legitimately has some of the worst, most aggressive scaling I've ever seen in my life.
A lot of 2s problems feel like they coded each and every interaction between numbers seperate from any other instance so numbers are randomly multiplicative/additive/exponential or have hidden factors like scaled by character level or world level, whether or not it cares about percentage or flat numbers and hidden numbers like rank X. It also doesn’t help that max health is actively detrimental to staying alive since only being over 50% health matters.

If you want a really good vladof explosive ar then farm yourself a Boom Sickle. The actual weapon is just called the sickle but you want to look for the boom variant which comes with explosive rounds, it's a very solid explosive ar and works great with moze.

I still think that a lot of the jokes there are cringe as frick, but these DLCs made something different or felt unique and fun compared to the rest of the games and DLCs
Yeah. Personally, I find playing through the story solo in borderlands games to be more enjoyable than with friends, but that mainly has to do with me getting distracted with stuff that I want to do vs what my friends want to do.
Also you can't farm dedicated drops with friends so there's also that.
I mean you CAN, but it requires constantly rejoining whoever you've assigned as host for farming because the moment you back out to the main menu you leave the group. It just feels like a big hassle waiting for people to reconnect when you could just farm the boss yourself.
It would be nice if the group "host" had the option to save-quit everyone at the same time and keep the group when reloading the game.

I played and enjoyed bl2.
But Randy and the BADASS writing make the game an easy target to make fun of.
They basically got the game right with Borderlands 1 and given how actively obnoxious 2 was of course it pisses people off.
This isn't even getting into the fact that it's been 13 years, it's the only one that doesn't suck probably pisses people off even worse.
Borderlands 1 was basically a space western, a genre I feel doesn't get enough love. You went out to save the world or fight against an evil corporation, you were there to kill shit and make money. Borderlands 2 went in the direction of 'rah rah freedom fighters' and that set the tone of the series, very unfortunately.
BL2 still has a bit of space western in it, just not in the story.
BL1 was at points even too bare, the lack of even basic npc interaction past

I find BL1 in general a weird game from pretty much every standpoint. The art style change, the whole random weapon creating and the FPS and RPG mashing made it feel like it was made as a tech showcase first and a game second
I'm surprised 1 was popular enough to get us to where we are today. The animation and sound quality was horrendous, especially for its time. That game does not hold up well compared to 2 alone.
Frick forgot to add: it feels like BL1 is one development cycle away from being a finished game. Like it's missing a complete art pass and round of gameplay adjustment, and the version we got is some incomplete alpha/beta.
I think it was extremely lucky because of the window it came out, having an interesting art style, but also because it overpromised as frick and got people to notice. Remember their 8 BAJILLION GUNS ad campaign? I do, somehow.

First off, there aren't any quest rewards worthwhile in 3 except for the pearl.
Second, you can get quest rewards from earl's vender on the ship scaled to your level. Of course that means vender farming but at least it doesn't require you to restart the story and is probably faster overall.

Borderlands 2 is a case study in how to ruin a game with bad mechanics. The game is marketed at casuals, but the power curve trends VERY strongly towards turning everything into a fricking bullet sponge that you can't outskill. It goes from killing shit with silly guns to "Jesus frick, if you don't obsessively metagame from wikis, you're going to literally run out of ammo against trash mobs." Even if you completely stripped out all of the story and dialog, it'd be a game that needs a MAJOR balance pass. It's simply not fun.
Additionally, they doubled down on the humor in 2, and it has absolutely not aged well at all.
They fixed the scaling in 2019, almost a decade later. Then they added the new dlc which has worse bullet sponges than old op8

They did make OP1-3 less grindy, you don’t even need slag to beat most of it (still better to use it though). But the game flat out breaks OP7-10, several enemy scales have a misplaced integer so they get x100 stats instead of x10 stats.

That describes my experience well, though a lot of it could be chalked up to the way it handled balancing in coop.

No, but I really should. I started falling out of interest with FPS games at the time and I never had any interest in going back to it. I can't really say I gave it a fair try though.

I think I genuinely liked it at one point but in retrospect I wouldn't go back and play any of them.
The writing (even 2's) is really annoying at times, and the gameplay is extremely ok. There are a bazillion games that individually do action, exploration and loot better, and borderlands never did anything great by trying to do all 3 at the same time. All the enemies are so bullet spongey. The visuals range from being ok looking at best to looking like an early telltale game running on low with a sharpen filter applied to it

You can turn off dialogue volume in the options but it doesn't help. The main issue isn't the dialogue itself but the absolute obnoxious placement of it in the main story. You basically get road blocked every few minutes by some standing around watching people talk segment.
If you only want to experience the end game gameplay loop then porating it with a completed save might be worth it.
BL3 sucks don't even waste your time. The guns feel really nice, but everything else is awful.
super small maps, no raid bosses without DLCS, terrible dialogue, boring classes, barely any boss battles, ubisoft-tier collectables, and they changed how legendries work so they're way easier to get(i've gotten 4 from a single boss) and are also way less interesting. also ava exists.

It's different, while it has Tiny Tina "DMing" the story the actual story isn't atrocious compared to 3. It has a likable villain surprisingly.
Base gunplay is the same as 3, but spells offer a lot more variety on top of that. There's the multiclassing system which lets you make a ton of different builds, but wonderland's endgame right now is just grinding the chaos chamber (which on its own is a great concept, but there's no other content to use it for gearing up towards besides its 4 raid bosses).
I'm still not sure what I think about its endgame leveling system (chaos levels compared to 3's mayhem levels). It definitely does some things better like limiting 3's stupid modifiers only to the chaos chamber and making you work for your levels, but at the same time there are 50 chaos levels to go through and it feels a bit bloated right now. Then there's re-farming all your gear which can be a nightmare in wonderlands because there are so many different attributes and parts that can spawn on gear.
My favorite thing about wonderlands is that your character feels important again.

Gun variety is important. You get to find you favorite gimmicky gun and roll with it, build something cool that uses it.
TTWL has the opposite problem, it feels like there are only 2 guns of every weapon class and most of them fricking suck ass.
It's unironically the best lootan game ever made. The thing is that there's a competent story below the hundreds of layers of bad dialogue and shitty jokes. This anon
is right about some things, but most of them are optional like the collectables or straight up lies like small maps and few bosses. I prefer legendaries the way it is now than a 3% chance like it was at BL2 for years, grinding now it's not a huge waste of time and I can clear all content and max lvl a character in a 100 hours instead of 300. At least give it a muted playthrough.

Dialogue in BL3 is unskippable. Even if you mute the game they force you to stand around waiting for the characters to shut the frick up before it lets you play again and it does this constantly compared to the older games.
Absolutely killed my desire to ever play it again.

Best gunplay, absolutely terrible base game story, great dlc campaigns but is lacking in endgame content compared to 2 (what endgame content it has is amazing, but there are only 3 raid bosses and one of them is locked behind dlc).
If the game got proper support past the first year then it would have been amazing, but they dropped it when it still needed care and now are focused on wonderlands (which is not looking good right now due to how terrible its dlc is).
Most of the complaints you see about 3 (besides the story) have probably been fixed with post launch updates because a lot of people vocal about the game only played it early on and dropped it.
If you get borderlands 3, then at least get the season 1 pass (all the dlc campaigns). Season 2 pass content is hit or miss depending on how much you like the game.
If you get wonderlands then you can get it without the dlc (it really sucks for its price and only one of them has anything substantial, that being a single new class).
But of course like any other borderlands game buy them only when they're on sale.

Some of these seraph items are just "what were they thinking" tier in terms of usefulness.
For example, the Sponge is an absorb shield which can get a maximum absorb chance of 54%. Meanwhile the Sham (a dedicated drop from Bunker) has a MINIMUM absorb chance of 77%. The Sponge has nothing unique about it besides an increased capacity and costs 120 seraph crystals to buy (which you only get around 10 per seraph guardian kill).

There’s some bizarre choices in the seraph items.

The Pre-Sequel, the first majorly disappointing BL game.
Oh, never played it, i played 1-3 with friends and everything after that went into the void, i thought the DnD would be kinda hard to frick up but they managed it
Tps is actually fairly decent, the scaling is fixed from 2. You can use a good gun almost as far as the original game let you. Characters are all pretty equal with even the most broken tps character not falling into Salvador tier. The problems with pre sequel are:
Characters constantly talking which would go on to be a staple of the series.
Too much gear is in the world drop pool so farming has no focus.
No endgame since the only raid boss can be killed 20 levels under pretty easily.
Studio shut down so there’s only one dlc that actually adds new stuff.
Strangely enough I think the DLC is the best thing in the entire series. It's like completely different people made it.
The last boss is pretty cancerous but it’s one of the better sections of the series. I still prefer dragon keep but that’s more to do with the value it provides to late game play.
One thing I will always chew TPS out for is the fact that farmeable bosses were added AFTER release, how do you frick that up after two games.
I liked the J-pop ending.

Should whites and greens be absolutely useless? I wish they weren't and we either had some kind of "trade-up" system so collecting lower rarity gear could be turned into higher rarities, or some kind of socket system similar to diablo 2 where lower rarity items have more slots.
Whites should be, since they pretty much exist only to demo what the company gimmick is on x item type.
Greens should be decent basically as blues are now.
Blues should be like purples and the ideal vanilla version of the weapon
Purple should be what red text blues are and etech.
Orange should be the top of the gear tree, pearlescents and seraph shouldn’t exist.
A slotting system would be okay I think, essentially being in the same part slot as accesories are currently.

Funny you say that because in 3 since legendary coms have major gamechanging abilities it made all lower rarity coms completely worthless, unlike in 2 where there were still plenty of viable blue and purple coms for everyone because they had unique stats not present on legendary coms (like +6 in a skill).
But the huge focus on damage boosting anoints really hurt the system in 3. Wonderlands alleviated this by reducing how much bonus damage you could get on a single anoint, and there are more creative anoints in general. Especially with class-specific anoints (anoint pool is still diluted like crazy and the increasing cost for rerolling anoints is super annoying).
Like always the borderlands series is filled with "one step forward, two steps back, three steps to the side" design choices.
That’s fair, the dragons keep coms are used at top tiers and they are blue or purple depending on the character.
Maybe 3s style coms should be set bonus things, so you get a really powerful effect but need a specific set of gear.

The writing of 3 is awful. Things happen in unnatural and nonsensical ways.
Take the Maya death. Mayas entire skill set revolves around her ability to hold man sized objects with telepathic power. Yet she physically grabs the character we know for a fact steals psychic powers.
The player character despite being in the room and a tiebreaker for the hostage situation does nothing.
Immediately following we get a bunch of random npcs having an awkward funeral followed by Ava blaming Lilith for her own frick up, the assembled npcs agree with Ava that it is somehow Lilith fault even when Lilith tells Maya before the mission that she should be the one going not Maya.
It’s entirely shit and bad emotional manipulation to try and force Randy’s shit e-girl fetish.

2s writing problems just stem from trying to add emotional weight and morality to a story about mass murdering treasure hunters hunting treasure, the dlcs don’t have this problem as they fully recognize the player characters are walking genocides who just want shiny objects.

That would make sense, but from how previous cutscenes have played out the player character is absent from the scene and only watching from the sidelines. All previous cutscenes also happen chronologically right when they're triggered, meaning the player saw Maya getting dusted.
Now, if they wanted to properly portray this as happening while inside the vault, then they could have added a few extra lines from Tannis talking to the player inside. Perhaps after picking up the artifact Tannis could have said: "Uhh, something bad just happened, vault hunter. You better come back quick."
Or better yet, have the player character be visibly seen stepping out of the vault after Maya dies, but that solution would have taken effort on gearbox's part.
All the cutscenes happen while you're either not there (in the vault while Maya dies) or indisposed (when the twins attack Lilith at the beginning) because Gearbox were too lazy to include the vault hunters in them

Sort of, vladof pistols tend to have mini rockets as a secondary fire but they suck.
You’re going to want a vladof ar with a Torgue barrel. Maliwan hilariously enough has the best explosives since they explode as an elemental.

Maliwan is really good but don’t force an allegiance, the game plays itself until mayhem 6 which starts to need good gear (luckily the best gear becomes available at this point).
A lot of 2s problems feel like they coded each and every interaction between numbers seperate from any other instance so numbers are randomly multiplicative/additive/exponential or have hidden factors like scaled by character level or world level, whether or not it cares about percentage or flat numbers and hidden numbers like rank X. It also doesn’t help that max health is actively detrimental to staying alive since only being over 50% health matters.

If you want a really good vladof explosive ar then farm yourself a Boom Sickle. The actual weapon is just called the sickle but you want to look for the boom variant which comes with explosive rounds, it's a very solid explosive ar and works great with moze.

Yeah. Personally, I find playing through the story solo in borderlands games to be more enjoyable than with friends, but that mainly has to do with me getting distracted with stuff that I want to do vs what my friends want to do.
Also you can't farm dedicated drops with friends so there's also that.

I mean you CAN, but it requires constantly rejoining whoever you've assigned as host for farming because the moment you back out to the main menu you leave the group. It just feels like a big hassle waiting for people to reconnect when you could just farm the boss yourself.
It would be nice if the group "host" had the option to save-quit everyone at the same time and keep the group when reloading the game.
