Anyway, I was thinking PS1. The translation is decent and loading times are a meme. It only affects saving but other than that there's no load times. Other than that, it would have to be GBA which I hear is glitched. But I love the aesthetics of it.
FF5: There are 3 ways this could go and I'm not sure which is best.

Yes but it's really not that important for these two games. When the plot point is that you whack somebody in the head with a frying pan to shake him out of a coma, there's really not much to lose in translation.
GBA version of IV is an abomination in terms of graphics and sound. Only choose this one if you have no aesthetic standards at all. The final battle is particularly cringe in the GBA version.
V isn't as pathetically bad as IV but you're still dealing with the shitty resolution and shitty sound. In general, GBA is never a good option for any SNES port unless your motive is to actually play on the actual handheld console and have no other choice. Consider picrel. You're trading of actual QoL of being able to see 12 spells at a time in your spell menu (4x3) for a max 6 spells (3x2) in with an ugly font. But hey, you have a fancy static background image right?

For me a translation doesn't have to be perfect, but it should at least be good. Something like FF4 English SNES is unacceptable from what I've seen, but SNES Chrono Trigger is fine from what I've seen of the new DS translation.

It's a pointless tax you pay every single time you use a spell in the entire game, which is going to be a lot.

I mean, yeah? Those are my standards for playing an RPG, just as you have your own standards such as the larger menu.
Also, being made in the 90's doesn't automatically excuse its bad writing. I get there were space limitations by translating it to English, but there were definitely things that could have been improved.

Its not bad writing, it's perfectly suitable to the format and frankly I wish more RPGs took 90s Final Fantasy approach of having more brief events with simple dialog. It really cut down on the Jap tendency toward cringe monologuing and tedious redundancy.
The thing with the writing is that it's simple. Characters are vivid and straightforward, but true. Rosa is faithful. Edward is a coward. Tellah is consumed with vengeance. Palom is cocky and Porom is polite. Edge is reckless and Cid is based. The story beats flow with the gameplay. There's foreshadowing and consistent themes.
But there's no elaborate dialog or monologues. Complex is not necessarily good. It can mean subtle and compelling growth arcs you see with characters like Cloud and Tifa in Final Fantasy VII. Or it can mean you have to sit there listening to Steiner struggle for 10 minutes trying to figure out whether he should continue being a total retard or not. More is not always better.
More polished translations of FF4 (eg PS1) will yield you fewer grammar and word issues. But goofy fun gives way to taking shit too seriously.

I never said complex is good or simple is bad, I don't know where you got that idea. I just think the SNES version makes the characters sound very robotic and unnatural.

The point is that when the writing is very simple, translation typically has much less impact (barring critical errors). If the story is trying to convey a lot of subtle points, a bad translation can really butcher the experience. Otherwise, it doesn't matter that much. Characters "sounding robotic" is (literally) in your head. Personally I think the more "polished" translations tend to be more bland and lifeless or else take themselves way too seriously (like the DS version). But YMMV and that's really the point with translations. If you don't know the original language, you'll always be stuck with someone's interpretation anyway.

tbh I don't get your rampant 'tism, why don't you just play them in Japanese? You don't seem to want any of the changes afforded in later releases and if you're happy to live with the bugs just play them.

Mode7 looks terrible and some of sound effects balance is wonky. Also it's 200MB vs the SNES version being 1MB. But it's fine besides that as I recall. I honestly only played it once and didn't even finish so I can't say there aren't any problems anywhere.

Anyway the main reason to play FF4 anyway is so that you can play Free Enterprise when you're finished, which uses is based on the English SNES version.
How often is Mode7 even used? From what I've seen of it, it doesn't bother me too much.
I'm also not really a fan of that J2e translation either.
Every time you use the airship. A few other times. It's not a big deal. The question is really how important the translation is to you. I grew up playing bad translations so Engrish doesn't really bother me unless it really gets in the way of understanding the story (certain parts of FF7 for example).
PS1 version is the best.
For 4 is the PSP version no matter what, but it's better if you have an actual PSP as hardware. 100%
For 5, I don't know, I also play it on PSP from the PSX ROM, and it was a decent version.
