Best way to play SH2

Without shelling out for the ps2 version. Should I go with the xbox version or is the pc version decent these days?

    >Shelling out

Last I checked it sells for nothing, at least that was the case when I sold a bunch of my old PAL games to replace with NTSC a couple of years ago.

It goes for around $150. I won't pay more than $60 for a game as a rule.

Shit bruh my condolences, I'm pretty sure I bought an NTSC copy back in 2019 for under £30 at least. Also shit, the PAL version is now selling for more than £5 brb putting my copy up at the inflated price.

Yeah, they've been $20-$30 games for years, I would have grabbed a copy if I'd known they were gonna shoot up all of a sudden. Worst thing about it is that it's caused by coomlector fags and resellers who aren't even gonna play the games. I've literally seen guys in my local buying games to sell on ebay for $5 profit.

Last I heard the PC port + fan patch is just about perfect, I would start there.

Enjoy. It's definitely a trip if you've never played it before.

Oh yeah I know, I've played it before. I'm about to replay the first 4 games. Sadly traded my original copy of 2 away to a friend at some point. Hope this PC version doesn't have the problems the HD collection had.

I think the Enhanced Edition fixes the problems present in the HD collection like the fog glitch. Anon posted a nice infographic a while ago comparing the two versions.

EE is a restoration of the PS2 version with the added resolution bump, widescreen and better flashlight effects.
There's some other crazy shit in it like AI enhancement of static images in the game too. You can't go wrong with it.

I will started later a copy that I just burned of the greatest hits version on my ps2, this version has the extras from xbox and afaik is the definitive edition if you dont want to mess with the pc with mods. By the way, I tried the pc version this year with all the enhancementes and it is indeed amazing.

Mount the ISOs of 2 & 3, and then run their installers like always.
DON'T use W10's own virtual disc app! It will not work.
Don't install under C:Program Files ! This will cause issues.

For SH2, Follow the Enhanced Edition homesite's instructions to the T, and you should be fine.
If you're mega lazy, just unpack the "Bare Essentials" to the game's folder, and you're done! The "Enhanced .EXE" is also the no-CD crack.

For 3 & 4, check the Guide or PC Gaming Wiki.
The SH1 is a PS1 rip that you gotta emulate.
I recommend the DuckStation, but most emulators work OK as well.

    >Protips
    -Play in the release order.
-Start with Normal difficulty! Don't do hard on 1st run (espec. SH2).
-Replaying them all is recommended; tons of replay value.
-Turn down the ingame Brightness setting, for better gamma & colors!
-Leg it, or sneak! No need to kill everything.
-Turning OFF the flashlight can really help w/ stealth!

Emulate with PCSX2 and don't listen to the "muh pc version of SH2" fags.

I did this recently. 1080p upscale with Vulkan.
      Worked out very well.

As someone who played SH2 day one on PS2, played the PC version a few years after it came out, emulated the PS2 version on PCSX2 and then played the PC version with the Enhanced Edition:

Just play the Enhanced Edition. It's genuinely terrific. But don't install the image enhancement pack or whatever that upscales/redraws some of the maps, signs and icons.

Just playing SH2 on a PS2 is also perfectly fine, but less accessible.

PC version with mods with community patches is the best you'll get without having to shell out for a PS2 copy.

Emulation works great, especially with the grain filter turned off through cheats, but there is unfortunately an issue with the widescreen patch where the game culls the wall textures at the edges of the screen inside hallways.

If that sort of thing would bother you and you refuse to play in 4:3, the PC version with patches is your best bet.
