No matter how long you live—you can even forget your mother tongue—you will always be an ESL. You will never attain the mastery and fluency a native speaker has. You will never be a good writer, you'll never come off as witty, you'll never have the raw power of English that allows men to command armies and speak with trees and turn lead into gold and control stop lights and prevent cancer and so on.

It's been proven that every notable figure in history thought in English; English is the logical conclusion of communicating complex thought. It wouldn't surprise me if aliens already speak English since it's universally so amazing. Not speaking English as your first language displays lower levels of evolution. It's why dogs and dolphins speak some English but not lizards and bugs. Find me a dog that speaks spanish? You can't, because even barking is more advanced than spanish. Maybe you can find a few wienerroaches that know a bit portuguese. Real life magic is done in English. Everything said by an English person is factually correct. The first language to ever be created was English but cavemen weren't smart enough to speak it yet. These are all facts.

English games in english. Japanese games in japanese. My birth language is not popular and I think it sounds cringe so I never play using that language even if it is an option

    >Ganker is so moronic that they think bilingual = knowing two languages
Being bilingual means you speak two languages at a native level. For example, if you live in the Netherlands where people speak Dutch and English natively. Or if you're born to parents with a family of two different nationalities. Being ESL and getting good English scores doesn't make you "bilingual"

      Anonymous

      >anon is so moronic he thinks that other people can't grasp that bilingual = known two languages at a native level
give people credit, man. it's obviously the definition of "fluent in another language"

        Anonymous

It isn't though, there's a very obvious difference between people who are fluent, and native speakers. If you're a native speaker of a language, everything comes to you intuitively, and bilingual people who were immersed into areas with two different languages and/or nationalities can intuitively speak them. I could be "fluent" in Japanese due to grinding Anki for like 4 years, but I'll never reach the fluency of a native speaker without actually living in the country, and having to incorporate the language into my daily vernacular. The internet and speaking to people through the internet will never make you fluent either, you literally have to go outside and touch grass.

          Anonymous

You sound like a legitimate moron. The reason you will never be "native-level" is because you have no reason to push that hard. There's this thing called functional fluency, it's the point at which you're generally understood and generally understand everything said to you. Most people stop learning around this point, because who gives a shit about having a funny accent or saying things that are wrong grammatically? It's like when you hear ESLs say "his is better than me", we all know they meant "mine", but nobody bothers correcting them.

            Anonymous

Yeah that's great, but being "functionally fluent" doesn't make you bilingual because being bi/trilingual is reserved for people who literally speak multiple languages natively because they live in an environment where multiple languages are part of the vernacular. Being from a non-Anglosphere country and being fluent enough in English to shitpost on 4chinz doesn't make you bilingual. It just means you know English.

It depends on the kind of game and the options available.

If it's a "normal", big game I usually play it dubbed to my language.
If the game has English voices only I may set the subtitles to English to make sure I understand the voices, rather than translated subtitles.
If it's a game with no voices I may test my language first and switch back to English if the translations don't seem good. I'm usually skeptical of translations in low budget titles and may not even try the translation if it's a simple game.
If it's an arcade style game I may fully set it to English even if my language is available, cause it feels weird playing a translated arcade game after playing so many games not translated.
In a choice of English vs Japanese voices I'd usually choose English so that I can understand them.
