Dan Abnett tends to write god-tier stuff that really does deep dives into the contents setting and background. CS Goto tends to write weird non-cannon stuff that somehow manages to have a dorky/cheesy feel whilst also being oddly greasy and sleazy.

Also, every female character in a goto novel will spend the entire story being tortured before dying. Every single one.

Frick off dan Abnett has ruined so much lore it’s insane yet he’s not targeted like the likes of ADB. All the bad things in Horus heresy are from him, the changes, rewrites, it’s Abnett

NTA, but they'll probably say perpetuals, true names, and enuncia.

Perpetuals are 30k not 40k, true names aren't an abnett invention, and Enuncia is cool

It's because Abnett has also wrote some of 40k's best stuff like Eisenhorn and Gaunt's Ghost. So he's viewed as more of a mixed bag than a negative element.

What’s this with Matt Damon assasinating mlk in 40k?

                Anonymous

I think it was in Legion, so 30k if you think its that distinct, where a perpetual has a flashback to shooting mlk, I think to emphasis how much of an assassin he is? It wasn't one of the better anachronistic references. fwiw some of them are flat out moronic like the model of the soviet space ship in Bequin.
Still on the fence about the soup base infantry.

What’s this with Matt Damon assasinating mlk in 40k?

In Unremembered Empire, Damon recalls killing "The Good Man in Memphis" on orders of The Cabal after they recruited him from Iwo Jima.

What could an galaxy wide cabal of aliens have against a single person?

                Anonymous

The Cabal thinks humanity is a threat to the galaxy because of its close connection to the warp and chaos. So they try to hamstring or destroy it.
They also tried to get Damon to kill Vulkan so they may just be the Space KKK.

I still don't see how killing MLK furthers that goal in the grand scheme of things.

Black people are so powerful that they would have risen to dominate the galaxy if Whitey and the Cabal hadn't teamed up to keep them down. Seriously, that's the implication. That this is established in the novel where Vulkan is betrayed and assassinated is not exactly subtle, is it?

Chris Wraight and Josh Reynolds are (or were for Reynolds) the two writers at BL who can actually produce entire novels (and even series) that are good quality, and have actual literary qualities like character arcs, theming, and metanarratives- AND also don't abuse the lore and setting. Other BL writers can write compelling individual scenes and establish interesting ideas for characters, with varying levels of consistency (ADB and Guy Hayley come to mind), but they ultimately aren't novelists. Their best books just happen to have enough cool scenes to distract from all the meaningless filler. One of the biggest issues with BL is that every writer less Reynolds and Wraight abuses foreshadowing like a redheaded stepson. It's fricking tiresome after a while.

The Fabius Bile stuff and the Inquisitor Covenant stuff was okay. Nothing great but that's not really what I'm reading franchise fiction for. Haven't gotten around to the warhammer horror short story collection but it seems at least a bit different.
There's an odd short in inferno or whatever that is a good time like the one about the blood axes teaming up with an imperial guard army to fight nids.
I hear good things about the Evil Suns book, haven't gotten to it. I mostly read BL when I'm hung over.

Abnett can write good characters but let's not pretend Abnettverse was ever close to 40k, even back in the day he wrote everyone and their mum flying anti-grav speeders like it was Star Wars and he's only gotten worse since the HH started, especially since GW incorporated primarchs into 40k and the implied canonicity of the BL drivel with it. Naming the guardsman was a sin.

I've just started Dead Men Walking (Necrons Vs DKK).
I'm still in the set-up chapters in the opening stages.
There have been more than one reference that I can only conclude is an author forgetting to CTRL+F his placeholders - like references to "fuel-burning engines" that should surely be a more interesting noun than fuel.

      Dead men walking is great.
Story is an absolute gut punch in every regard and really drives home the hopeless suffering you would expect from a oldcron vs Krieg Deathkorps conflict. Everything human comes to an end there.

Infinite and the Divine and The Twice Dead King are legitimately good science fiction. Not good for 40k, but good for the genre- they actually raise some interesting characters and are accessible enough to go in with no knowledge of the setting.

I’ve been keeping a list of my favorite books from 40K as I’ve read through Black Library. I really enjoy Andy Clark’s novels. Shroud of Night was an absolute banger. Storm of Iron is a GOAT novel. Dawn of Fire is actually a sleeper hit series IMO. Gate of Bones has some incredible combat scenes and Mordians. I’m going to try to find the first novel in the Vaults of Terra series or pick up Soul Drinkers Omnibus 1 next.

    2. Storm of Iron
    3. Shroud of Night
    4. Volpone Glory
    5. DoF: Throne of Light
    6. DoF: Avenging Son
    7. DoF: Wolftime
