World of Warcraft will never "die", that's just a fact. The question is: Can WoW ever go back to being a highly acclaimed video game?

No. Blizzard is clearly not going to invest further money into the game and they are just going to use the addicts that will never quit to fund other projects.

let me put it this way
WoW was a party that lasted from 2004 to 2010. some will argue it went on longer some shorter, but these were its golden years
the party ended. the party is now over. it is been over for some time.
oh, sure, the venue that hosted the party - it's still there, and the people who worked there, they're still working there. you can go hang out there if you want and there will probably be other people there too.
but just looking around, seeing the state of things there, the party is very obviously long over. you and everyone else visiting or working there knows that.
are they going to tear down the venue and lay off everyone who works there? no, probably not for a long time. but the party is over.

There's no problem. Microsoft definitely made the right call. I'm just saying it's kind of ironic that a survival game has had huge success at the same time of them cancelling theirs. World of Warcraft is their only remaining IP that has any sort of hope for growth, in my opinion.

In their defense GW2, one of their only competitors, has been doing this successfully in the last few years

GW2 is f2p, so selling patches makes more sense for them. And blizzard is charging 3x as much for their expansions too. Hell I think you can get all of GW2's expansions on sale for less than the price of one special edition wow expansion.

That's cool, I tried the game but couldn't get into it due to the shitty loot system filling up your bags in 2 seconds and having to pay for more bag slots to make it bearable to play. Just felt incredibly shitty to play, free trials of the other 2 feel like they respect you more as a human than GW2's f2p experience.

                Anonymous

The secret is back when GW2 launched, gold was worth more than gems were.
So you would make some gold by just playing the game, trade it via the built in gold to gems exchange system, and get enough gems to just buy whatever you needed from the cash shop. This includes bag slots, which you could get a ton of from the shop. Doing so now costs something like $5 per slot. And you have to do this with *every character* you play.
So basically everyone back then used this to get a bunch of bag slots to get around the awful inventory system. Missed out? Either pay up or deal with constant visits to vendors to get rid of shit.

                It's just kinda there.

The latest expac has less content than most free updates. Nothing really big happening with the game, nothing big has happened in years. The last time the game was hype was the 2nd expansion when they added mounts.

Nobody cares about retail at this point. Ever since they released classic retail has been shrinking and shrinking and shit expansions like Sneedolands and Dragonshite didn't help either.

The only thing keeping WoW relevant is the nostalgia of millions of 35 year old white dudes who can't let go.

They are now following the "spam small expansions" model that Everquest has been doing for years now to squeeze more money out of a small population of lifetime addicts. This follows their imitation of TLP servers with Classic. The Ouroboros is completed: WoW is back to copying EQ again.

Their adamant refusal to just put in the time and resources and effectively "reboot" WoW with Classic the way Runescape did with OSRS is pathetic. That is where the money is, that is what people want. The success of Season of Discovery makes that very very clear.
I don't think the Worldsoul Saga will be any more successful than Dragonflight was. Some people will check it out for curiosity's sake, sure, but not many are going to stick around, they'll gobble up the content in a couple weeks and then unsub like usual.

      Don't forget

      >Blizz management said no because they wanted to use an internal engine they developed that was designed for 100's of players (Which Unreal 4 didn't have till Fortnite BR later in the year)
      >The Synapse engine was designed for mobile first. Not console and PC
      >Engine had massive tech problems
      >Engine was so bad that the Team had to prototype features in Unreal then port them over to Synapse
      >Blizz management still kept telling them "No" when they kept asking to move to Unreal
      >Acquisition happens
      >MS comes in and sees a mess of a project
      >Shitcans it

It's fricked but I bet Microsoft would have probably let them continue if it was done in Unreal. That "No, we must use this mobile game engine" decision was absolutely fricking disastrous. They might have even had the game out by now if they used Unreal.

aside from apparently having fricking nothing to show after 6 years of dev time, i think pic related is the real reason it was cancelled. people in the UK are harder to just fire due to the laws there, so rare rarely gets touched by these layoffs, and blizzard's game was too similar

Everwild is probably part of the reason. Microsoft have a lot of "Survival" genre games already like Minecraft, Grounded, State Of Decay and MS has third party deals with the likes of Ark Survival Evolved. A game inherited in an acquisition with years of tech issues and nothing to show for it in a genre that Microsoft has covered plenty. There's no point in letting that drag on.

While it looks like some who worked on Odyssey didn't want it to be cancelled. Game was targetting a 2026 release (highly optimistic), so 2-3 years didn't seem that bad. Especially if it's going to be mtx heavy, they could've made a lot of money in the first year to recover development cost.

Blizz sold themselves. Before that blizz was selling themselves. Aka abandoning the ship.
They knew they had projects in the pipeline that were shit but could be useful to pad the portfolio for potential buyers.
Float the project until after the sale. Perhaps even force the team to switch engines which kicks the can x years.

The project was essentially a scam/fraud and it took a minute to figure it out.

I was talking with some people I know recently, some industry artist types, others just your average Zoomer internet types who worship AAA slop as long as it has queer shit in it. And they were doing the whole "Oh man these companies are so evil for firing artists and workers and stuff" bit. And look, yes, these companies are horrible organizations that deserve to crumble because they exist to churn out goyslop woke garbage to bilk money from morons and funnel it into the pockets of Bobby Kotick types.

But at the same time, how the frick people don't understand that all of these tech and gaming companies have been running with bloated rosters of useless people for the last decade or so is beyond me. Like we were saying this shit in 2014, about how all of these companies just hire some dyed-hair feminist dyke into HR, and then over the next few years those people start sliding cushy high-paying jobs to their moronic friends, and suddenly a few years later you have an office full of overpaid, non-skilled queers who exist solely to take time off work to protest about Palestinian Veganism or some shit.

So of fricking course when the economy takes a turn, inflation is skyrocketing, and the blood is in the water showing that big companies can cut the fat and still run just fine, these fricking corporations are going to use that opportunity to boot their legion of overpaid glorified interns who haven't made a sellable product in years.

ESG backdoor funding is going away, companies can't just put out garbage and be fine because their entire profit margin is subsidized on the back end by Blackrock anymore. They have to trim their roster and try and sell a product again.

No one gives a frick about Warcraft, Diablo, Starcraft or Overwatch anymore except the sunken cost and nostalgia homosexuals that will never let Blizzard games go. With that audience they can sustain for a while longer, but they clearly cannot rejuvenate those IPs or attract new players with them. Would a blizzard survival game have sold tons if it was warcraft/StarCraft/diablo themed?

      Anonymous

If they marketed it well a warcraft themed survival game would probably have sold decently well. Lots of people who think vanilla wow was about your character being a simple adventurer and want to savor that feeling. Running around in the wetlands gathering mageroyal and liferoot to make potions to prepare for a dwarf attack could be pretty novel.

        Anonymous

it's impossible to make a warcraft themed survival game because the warcraft setting itself is too incoherent and unstable to attach any other game to. or at least, any game that takes itself remotely seriously. apparently you can attach hearthstone to it, and just have it all be moronic garbage and people just go "lmao", but in a survival game you're supposed to at least somewhat immerse yourself in the setting, and you can't do that when every couple of years something fundamental about it changes.

Do you really think notPokemon's success was due to being a "survival game"?

It looked like absolute woke trash. Phil dindu nuffin wrong. It seems like they're doubling down on wow and mobile games. Which kinda sucks because I was hoping for an RTS

It probably bounced between teams and had to restart development over and over

    >some jp devs spend 3 years making pokemon survive
    >biggest game of all time
Blizzard devs need to all be fired because they are the most inept people in the business.

I didn't even know they were making one but it's so typical for Blizzard to hop onto a band wagon way too late.

you guys need to let go. the people that made blizzard good have left a long time ago. all that's left is the corporate directive to extract as much cash out of their audience as possible. lootboxes, season passes, skins that cost more than a game, gacha bullshit in full priced games, it just never ends.

And Actiblizard LITERALLY paid for industrial and Marketing sabotage against bethesda and 76 when the first interaction of this game, was going to be with Tychus and it would be a starcraft game.
And 76 Survived, and their shitty game is now dead.

          >literal schizos
          >when Activision Blizzard was well known for sabotaging their adversaries by aiming wow patches closer to a X game release or when they actively killed lawbreakers and tried to kill TF2 and CSGO with OW's release
          >when it was admitted that they have aton of journos on their payroll or doing for free in exchange for blizzcon gifts
          >when they literally paid to evade a general scandal due to the lynching and attempted rape of a girl cosplayer at blizzcon at the peak of the faction homosexualry and corpsegrinder video, because she was dressed as her character and her parents were feds.
          And yeah we are schizos

Woke trash that was so bad it has to be cancelled. Devs literally just took the piss and gathered 6 years of wages for nothing.

Is anyone surprised companies are genociding staff? So many people have been taking the piss with 6+ year game dev times collecting 6 years wages for a shit game. Id fire the c**ts too.

I'm going to hijack this thread for my question. What do people like about survival games? Personally I play games to win, so I don't get the appeal of open ended games without goals like survival games. Can someone who likes them explain why?

They'd been working on it for 6 years with nothing to show. They're on record saying they'd still not have anything by 2025.
Whatever the frick this thing was, it was a shit show and Microsoft were right to cut their losses.
