It boggles my mind how they took out everything related to magical girls which is what the whole series was about and instead turned it into a shitty Persona ripoff. The boss music from the gacha even has shitty Engrish rapping like a Persona game.

Gust tried to turn Blue Reflection into Atelierslop aka a bunch of girls having very sanitized and robotic relationships with each other in order to allow otaku to see them as his potential waifu. Except Atelier had actually steaming hot girls to pander to the coomer self insert audience, meanwhile Blue Reflection really only had the yuri fanbase, which Gust let die of starvation.

        >Blue Reflection really only had the yuri fanbase, which Gust let die of starvation
The thing is that, while I can't speak for every fan of the series, yuri fans weren't being starved and in fact the yuri increased from just mild subtext and a joke side character in the first game, to more apparent between several characters in the anime, to much more overt and even outright confirmed between two main characters in the second game. Then they decided to just turn back on everything and even had the gall to state a male protagonist was planned since the first game. It's like they were trying to make everyone mad.

BR2 failed hard and series was never going to be big with censorship. Making non popular series into gacha was never going to be success. Competition is tough and japanese are losing for following ESG.

Guess how it would've been less tough? If they hadn't tried to fit a square peg into a round hole and twist Blue Reflection into a franchise for waifugays when that market is already oversaturated ten times over on mobile. Staying course would've at the very least let them keep their existing niche audience instead of appealing to absolutely nobody.

Considering a game of its budget sold 120k within the first few months of its release, it probably didn't flop that hard. That's not too far off non-Ryza Atelier numbers.

Yeah, BR2 did fine. Definitely not up to what they were expecting since they revived BR as a multimedia project where the anime bombed so hard they canceled the BD release and the mobage got delayed by over a year and then also bombed, but Second Light still had growth over the sales of the first game and if they hadn't tried to push the IP so hard and just made that second game instead, it would be considered a modest success good enough to keep making more games. With how things actually went, the franchise is probably dead though.

The amount of confidence they exhibited reviving Blue Reflection seemed disproportionate to how well the series had done thus far. Not even Atelier which was always way more popular ever got a two-cour anime, just two single-cour ones.

The thing about yuri is that it's rather niche compared to the girls just wanting to frick you, the producers probably noticed this and told the developers to give you the option to play as a guy without realizing that their core audience would be mad about it

        Anonymous

It wasn't 'the option'. An option would've at least been begrudgingly ignorable by the core audience and considered a necessary evil. They forced it to be male MC only, for no real reason since he's a self-insert they stepped on eggshells to make as bland as possible for that explicit purpose.

FGO basically ruined the Japanese gaming market
It's a low budget piece of garbage and still makes tons of money anyway so tons of investors and CEO's look at it and go "we can make that too!", then the game fails and a new moron comes along and repeats the cycle.
It got even worse when the FGO developers took all their FGO money to make a new game with SEGA that had a ridiculous fricking budget, except it looked and played like complete shit compared to Genshin and shut down after 4 months. That scared the entire japanese industry away from committing to high budget games.

And then, whenever a mid-budget games actually manages to become successful, like Heaven Burns Red, Tencent just shows up and buys the entire company.

This tells of possible changes in spending power, Japan’s mobile game market and players attitudes towards microtransaction-oriented mobile games.
      >The report by The Nikkei analyzes credit card usage data for the year 2023 and compares the pre- and post-covid performances of 85 industries. Among them, the mobile game market has shown a steady decline, and interestingly, even during the peak of the covid crisis in 2021 and 2022 (during which Japan’s game industry thrived) the mobile game industry was not able to achieve the profits it did back in 2019.
Also most gacha players are f2p users or spend little amount of money.

Pretty sure F/GO money allowed for Samurai Remnant to happen too, which I heard it was a good game.

      Good riddance

Yurishitters can't sustain a game to save their lives. Even Tie with all its handholding and girl-dating only managed to sell 1/3rd of its shipped copies. It's utterly hillarious to see them act as if a male mc was the canary in the mine, when the fact of the matter is the series was always kind of shit and only had a niche because it was a persona-lite loveletter to 90s Mahou Shoujo. And we couldn't even have that properly in Tie because the producers thought Henshin scenes weren't necessary.

It's not that much better. The gacha was set between the anime and the second game so now there's a permanently missing part of the story that was never even fully told and which makes the climax of the second game come out of nowhere.

What the frick? The point of the second game's ending was resetting the world without the Sephira and the Ash Syndrome and it just happens again? Plus that means the original version of the events that leads into SL is just never told.

              Anonymous

Do they ever say it would get rid of the ash? Because in Second Light ending when you talk to Shiho she even mentions it's just a hope that the world won't have any ash in it. But hopefully Sun's last chapter explains things...

                Anonymous

The Ash happens because Hinako destroys the Sephira which controlled the world and Origin tries to course-correct it by erasing all life now that it can't be controlled. Remaking the world so that the Sephira and the Origin never existed should eliminate any chance of the Ash being a thing. But frick me for even pondering this moronic mess.

I could check the ending again but I'd rather not think about it. It's a shitty cop-out anyway since they skipped making the original version of the story in favor of a new iteration. It's the equivalent of Square making FFVIIR without the original FFVII existing.

If it was the latter, then congrats of not even being able to stick to their own planned storyline.

I swore the company off. I will never buy another Atelier or Blue Reflection game again. Or anything made by them. The moment they removed anime intros from Atelier and thinned out the subtext for the self-insert trannies i knew this won't end well. The heart is long gone. The moment they announced a gacha with a male self-insert for BR i knew i this company is totally fricked. I hope they will burn and go bankrupt one of these days. No matter what they shit out, i won't buy it. Gust actually releases the yuri game of the decade? I'll pirate it.

I'd play an offline version for this alone, lots of JK loose assets. Even if it EoS'd it's still the most successful product the IP has ever had, unfortunately the game itself wasn't very good because nips are still stuck in the early 2000s.
The best outcome in all of this would be the IP being acquired by some based individual who could revive this project to its full potential, because Koei Tecmo would certainly not be able to especially now that they're in bed with BlackRock.

        Anonymous

        >it's still the most successful product the IP has ever had
I seriously doubt that. It averaged $100k a month or less for half its run (Sensor Tower estimates, last month was just 70k) which would put its total gross considerably lower than the console games' recorded sales at full price.

Believing that it only failed because they didn't double down on yuri is naive. Tie flopped too regardless of the amount of yurishit. You're insufferable, get over it.

Second Light did in line with Gust's usual output including non-Sophie and non-Ryza Atelier games.

What fricking gameplay balance are you talking about?
        You do dungeon.
You craft the newest shit and put it somewhere.
You do the 30 character events that they throw at you all together.
        Rinse and repeat.

          >You do the 30 character events that they throw at you all together.
I never thought I would say this about a game but there were too many character events. Probably a consequence of adding so many new characters at once but it takes many hours getting through them all.

The actual combat, perhaps? BR1 is broken wide open the moment you have AoE skills. People meme about Grape Wave for a reason. Second Light scales the player's power down so that you have to actually build up and maintain your ability to access the OP skills. BR1 just lets you spam away and combat became a nonfactor outside of maybe 5 encounters. Also, EXP is actually tied to combat in SL so combat has a point this time around anyways. That you didn't even think about this baffles me.

Why do they do that? Square Enix killed the FMA gacha after 1 year despite the game doing good (it had declining sales but most games have declining sales after the first year). Even if it's making money they will just cancel it if it isn't making FGO money? That can't be
Longest gacha I've been playing has been the senran kagura gacha which is getting to 6.5 anni soon. Feels like a lifetime compared to some other gachas.

6.5 years for a gacha that isn't an original IP or something too big to fail like one piece is pretty amazing. I dont think gachas are worth playing after the 5th anni because newer games just beat older games easily. Whales in FGO are just performing masochism now.

Basically. Which is why the monthly meme revenue chart doesn't even bother listing half of these jap gachas, they'll be dead by next year regardless unlike actual bottom earners like Girls Frontline that persist regardless because they have no suits to answer to.
