When are you supposed to fight Messmer?

When you first get to shadow keep. Which would be the entrance that has the hippo

normal progression is right before burning the sealing tree.
there are like 3 bosses after him and 2 are throwaway bosses unrionically.
so anon is saying 85% of the dlc is the best

When you first get to shadow keep. Which would be the entrance that has the hippo

When I went to shadow keep the first time Micky broke his rune and I freaked out and went south and did Putrescent and Bayle. Now I'm on Romina.

Someone said Messmer was the Pentultimate boss, even though it felt initially like they wanted him to be third.

So he really is the third remembrance boss of the DLC?

My pathing was rennala, lion, and then messmer. Messmer is definitely intended to be fought early on because you hit a roadblock after beating the lion and renalla, and both of those are basically right next to your spawn point in the dlc

            Anonymous

I found Cerlean coast and Bayle's peak first, but went to Scadu Altus because NPC quests were there. Technically I could have done either of those before Messmer without knowing the goal was to kill Messmer.

You can also get to the Ruins of Raugh by casually exploring shadow keep without facing Messmer.

Bayle has the same camera problem like every dragon, also pooping fire below him that you have to run is annoying.
Midra is tied with Messmer for best fights.

midra was disappointing and didnt live up to the hype. I didn't really notice and camera problems with bayle. I deff noticed issues with sannesax. Sannesax is 100% the worst fight in the dlc

Sannesax and the Death Rite Bird gank were the two worst reuses.

I liked the environmental storytelling they did with the jagged peak and sennessax but yea boss reuse is dumb. why were none of the drakes with magma lightning black again? they couldn't recolor Bayles spawn? also Bayle looks like a Mohg Dragon why?

sote is ringed city all over again story wise. marika(gwyn) had a secret land and kid never mentioned, along with tons of other NPCs and things just conveniently tucked away not doing anything until you get there. makes it all feel like a bonus they thought up and tacked on and not significant lore wise. bosses are also all way too spazzy. elden ring base game is still a 10/10 though, and the new gear just makes it better

After hearing all the complaints about the bosses I'm honestly disappointed with how slow and fair their movesets were when I got to them all. Even Radahn 2 pauses for a second to show you his next attack and you can even just position yourself to dodge instead of iframing, albeit 2nd phase is still a bit crazier than everything before him.
I was kind of hoping to have to struggle to learn, but it was pretty basic DS3/BB type stuff where most bosses die before you learn anything fun.

          Anonymous

If you fought him fairly you wouldnt compare him to ds3 bosses since he's 10x as difficulty as anything in ds3, ie youre exposed as a cheese/mimic user

            Anonymous

You don't even have a concept of what's supposedly fair, let alone any possible idea what I used. You're just assuming that I cheesed the boss because you can't personally see any way somebody could just fight him normally. You are even ignoring the fact that I acknowledged he's a step above everything that came before him just to defend yourself. After all (you) couldn't do it, so how could somebody else? You're no different than all those crybabies from way back who just blame the game instead of their own inadequacy and lack of understanding.

I'm not sure if I'm missing something, but I just started the DLC and it seems to be kinda empty and boring so far. If you're saying that this is supposed to be the best part, then that's pretty demoralizing.

I played about 2.5 hours so far. My experience blog post:
    > Spawned in the gravesite plains
    > Kinda weird that there's no cutscene or anything, just plomps you down in a gray ravine. Whatever, dlc ahoy.
    > Wandered around the forest area near spawn for a bit, there was literally nothing in it aside from the one naked claw npc
    > The forest area is literally empty so turned around and went in the other direction
    > Killed some trash mob birds that drop smithing stone 5? Why the frick would anyone playing the dlc need that?
    > Fought gray knight dude in the copy pasted crypt from the base game.
    > The gravestones and what fields are giving me fps drops by this point.
    > Reach the weird ruin along the road. Nothing in it but trash mobs and a skibidi fragment.
    > Ok finally a boss, the fire basket guy thing from the trailer.
    > It's not a boss
    > You can't damage it
    > Skip it and proceed past towards the big bridge.
    > More empty slopes and grassy rocks with a few trash mobs scattered in between
    > Find a cool frozen pot dungeon. Has frick all in terms of loot, but actually seeing the malformed pot contents for the first time is kinda cool, even though the tentacle attack animation is obviously unfinished.
    > Reach the boss door
    > Giant fog gate, excited to see what kind of creature is causing the frost effect here.
    > It's a random monkey with a magic sword. No reasoning. No fricking relation to anything. Just a random monkey.
    > beat it, get nothing of interest

Put it down for after that and went back to browsing Ganker.
Was a two year break fro melden ring not enough to wash away the open world fatigue? Or do I just have dopamine brainrot?
Please tell me the starting area is just a mood piece that you're supposed to blitz through and it gets better later on.

Seems more like you're just burnt out on the games, the only thing you posted that hasn't been abundantly present since DeS is the open world aspect.

The smithing stones are nice because you get new weapons you'll want to max out. Even when the game is showering you with smithing stones in the dlc, you're going to run out.
You can damage the giant furnace golem. They are sort of 'puzzle bosses'
The frozen gaols have weak bosses, but sometimes give you fun rewards. I think the monkey lets you summon her? Some people used that summon throughout the dlc.
If you follow that main road through the village in either direction, you should run into a dungeon -- balarat or the first castle/keep.
The open world bits don't have a lot of enemies in them except for when you come upon the actual camps.

All they allow themselves to be challenged with is the recollection of how they beat Gwyn
