    BASED = Cut UNATCO ending

Yeah, there would have originally been an ending / storyline where you do what Unatco tells you the whole game so you eliminate the resistance and then join Bob Page in the end I guess.

Which ending is which? First time I played I joined the Illuminati. In retrospect Ted K makes a compelling argument for the chaos ending

while initially I thought the doomsday ending made the most sense, now I think the AI ending is the only way. the argument for doomsday ending is that humanity will have a chance to start over and... do what exactly? sooner or later a new human civilization will face the exact same issues, so you're just postponing the inevitable.

if anything its even more of a moronic ending because you only ever destroy the facilities in Area 51. yes, you are taking down the internet but im sure there's enough people qualified (including the ones you work with to reactivate the universal constructors to create vaccines) to rebuild the Aquinas network for better or worse.
so at best you keep humanity "safe" from malicious entities like the Illuminati for a few months until someone else eventually fixes up the internet and society gets put in the shadows of a new conspiracy once again.
you either hope JC can overcome Everett or convince him to do whats best for humanity or let him take on the problem alongside Helios.

I chose the Dark Age ending since I’d rather roll the dice and at least give man a chance to try something else. Status quo was obviously fricked, and I’d rather avoid a potential eternity of torment for humanity under an AI god, even if it is partly JC.

None of the endings are a happy one though.

          >give man a chance to try something else
like what? it is inevitable that as technology progresses we develop computers and most likely AI as well. no matter how many times you roll the dice. we will always end up here.

You only choose one ending? Unlike the rest of us who saved the game prior to having our options outlined for us so we could finish them all?

Obviously the dark age ending thinks there are greater possibilities and the current state of affairs is history-contingent
Illuminati and helios obviously think things will turn out the same way inevitably and you can either try again to get people ready for godhood or say frick it I'll seize godhood I can't comprehend myself and then hope I can fix things from the far side

Invisible War made all of the endings canon somehow but going with Helios again in Invisible War is a fairly optimistic choice compared to the other options.

It saddened me that the game was absolutely linear. I was hoping for forks in the road. Why else did I have so many save files... Well just 3 choices in the last 30min of the game.

Deus ex mostly has slightly tricked reactivity but it works insanely well on a first playthrough. I was completely shocked when the game let me kill Anna on the plane and kept going

I think it's only ever a question of whether you trust Helios to continue to be benevolent and voluntary after merging with JC. I forget if it's Helios or Morpheus that posits the idea that democracy and compromise would be a pointless process if you were known and honest in entirety by an all-knowing and impartial entity, but it and the pitfalls of that reasoning would terrify me if Helios had total control and made a bad judgement. It might continue to be benevolent and its advice might continue to be voluntary to opt into, as shown when it initially comes online, but who knows after absorbing what it's missing from JC and coming to understand humanity better.

As such, even though the New Dark Age does little to enact any long-term change, just wiping out Helios and buying humanity more time on the clock can be considered a viable choice. Disregard everything Tong says and just focus on the fact that you kept the world spinning another day, and when shit progresses back to some new conflict of a similar manner in 50 years, that's just part of the spinning baby.

And then of course, the Illuminati ending is just shit. Morgan Everett is a disgusting monster of a human being, and any alliance with him would quickly devolve into yet another schism if JC isn't a total reprobate. If you think a guiding hand could be fair and prosperous, then you're better off just cutting out Everett and siding with Helios.

All endings are pretty dystopian but Tong's is the only one that's outright naive, so I rarely choose it.
Anyway if you didn't get Illuminati ending at least once, you missed out on most of the final level's challenges. It's the most uninteresting ending but the most interesting to actually play.
