except auto battle is unironically a good feature that many other JRPGs have had for decades. the concept literally predates Pokemon as a series with games like Earthbound. it also seems like its implementation in the upcoming games has been cleverly merged with the act of sending Pokemon out to do shit from Legends, which means this is not only the implementation of a long overdue JRPG staple mechanic, but it's also taking a new mechanic from the previous game and not only bringing it back, but actually building upon it and expanding it. which sounds pretty basic but by Pokemon standards this is fucking monumental, I'm pretty sure the last time this happened was when double battles were expanded into triple and rotation battles, or I suppose the transition from gen 7's ride Pokemon to Legends' ride Pokemon.

tl;dr this is fine and if you don't like it just don't use it, your experience will be completely unaffected if you ignore the mechanic entirely

Other JRPGs are made by competent developers who know what they're doing.
With Game Freak, they have no credibility whatsoever, so it's impossible not to see auto battling as yet another trojan horse for them to put even less effort into the games from now on and make them even more braindead. The amount of kneejerk excuses from the fanboys guarantees that within a generation or two, the entire "game" will play itself.

You think programming an auto-battling system where your pokemon battle wild mons in the overworld without your input is them putting in less effort?

          Anonymous

nta but it would mean GameFreak doesn’t have to care as much about balance or organically teaching players how to battle.
They can also just make it your Pokemon just uses the trainer AI.

auto-battle could be as simple as setting the move you want your pokemon to always use when you toggle it on. so you don't have to go through all the menu and prompts when steamrolling through irrelevant wild mons.

How is it going to work in SV? Pokémon requires move use in regular battles. Will it be like the battles in PokéWalker and PMD using moveless attacks?

      Anonymous

We don't really know since it hasn't been elaborated on. It has a health bar and you can see it using move animations so logically it will still use moves and PP, though there's no indication of how it will choose what moves to use. It would make sense for it to prioritize super effective moves or the strongest moves to end battles as quickly as possible, since speed is ostensibly the goal.

        Anonymous

I think they should make the AI a bit flaws personally, selecting the highest power attack, maybe factoring in Stab, but not type advantages. You still wanna leave the impression that your Pokémon is better off battling by your command, but is at least capable of taking out weaker mons on its own

    >Auto Battles take place through a new feature called Let's Go that lets players send off their partner Pokémon to explore the nearby area, during which they can take on wild Pokémon in their own fights

    >Auto Battles (as the name suggests) take place independently of the player's involvement. This means that, while you can stick around and watch your Pokémon battle another, you can also walk away and explore the area.

    >You can have one Pokémon out and walking with you in the Paldea region’s great outdoors," the website reads. "When you have a Pokémon exploring with you in the field, you can use the 'Let’s Go' feature to send that Pokémon off in the direction you indicate. The Pokémon you send out then independently picks up items in the area and even has Auto Battles with nearby Pokémon.

So yeah, it's not even "the game plays itself for you" or anything like the auto-battle system other JRPGs have had for years, way to blow up over nothing. It's more akin to the "send a Pokemon out on a job" that Sword/Shield had, except you can see what it's doing now. And from the sounds of it, you can't use it when fighting other trainers anyway, much less human opponents, only wild Pokemon out on the field.

Also considering it's 100% optional I don't care. The idiots who still complain about the exp-share even have a better argument than people complaining about auto-battle since that's something you can't turn off or not use, and I could not care less that exp share is a thing.

And no, this is not a sign that auto-battles will replace normal battling. On top of how this is nothing like what auto-battles in JRPGs are normally like, that would completely destroy having tournaments that The Pokemon Company loves to brag about having. A large chunk of their last Pokemon direct was dedicated to tournaments, they aren't going to destroy that source of revenue and PR.

honestly it seems almost entirely useless, like you can only use it in the open world against wild pokémon and probably only one at a time per pokémon in your party. we’ve seen that pokémon spawn like they do in legends, so that means a maximum of eight to ten pokémon in an area. so why would i ever need to stop what i’m doing to bother fighting like four wild pokémon at a time when i could just not do that, literally fight a trainer in half the time for waaay more experience?

i love the feeling of having your pokémon battle independently though, really feels like what i always thought training with your pokémon would be like. but as it is, we’ll most likely over level everything without even trying, and since wild battles are 90% of the time useless, i’d rather just not stop to send my team against random pokémon. there would need to be a big distinction between auto battles and actually fighting to make this work for me

It was inevitable. I've been saying it for months now. We will see a time when pokemon themselves are removed and people defend it.
This is a test for bringing mainline pokemon to smartphones and introducing gacha. Almost all gacha games have autofarming. Either Switch Lite or the next console after will be the last Nintendo portables.
