Bungie on life support!Sony is killing Bungie!

>Sources say they were told by leaders that the current split board structure is contingent on Bungie meeting certain financial goals.

>If Bungie falls short of its revenue goals by too great an amount, Sony is allowed to dissolve the existing board and take full control of the company.

>Many employees understand that Bungie is struggling to meet the necessary targets to keep its last vestige of freedom.

>It was with this threat looming that Bungie leadership made the choice to lay off roughly 100 employees last month. But the cost-cutting at Bungie isn't limited to just personnel. The company has implemented numerous other cost-cutting measures recently, including a studio-wide hiring freeze, reduced travel budgets, elimination of holiday bonuses, delaying its weeklong company "Pentathalon" event to next December, and reducing numerous morale events such as cooking and knitting classes from monthly to quarterly.

>Bungie is also pausing or fully ending benefits like annual employee compensation adjustments to meet market rates and its new hire lunch program. And yearly studio performance bonuses this year will only be the contractually obligated 80% minimum, after being above 100% for good performance several previous years running.

>Employee frustration and sadness in the days and weeks following the layoffs was met with a surprising amount of indifference or even outright flippancy or hostility from management.

>Leaders had reiterated, across multiple meetings, that they couldn't guarantee there wouldn't be more layoffs, with two specifically recalling chief people officer Holly Barbacovi outright stating that layoffs were a "lever" the company would pull again.

TLDR: More layoffs coming, employee benefits and compensation cut, hiring freeze, latest destiny expansion flopped, SONY taking more and more control of the company, employee morale in the gutter.

Others laid off included a noticeable number of members of Bungie’s DE&I clubs, including co-heads of Pride@Bungie, Women@Bungie, and Accessibility@Bungie . When combined with other recent resource cuts, these dismissals have led to fears these clubs might be shut down.

I don't play Destiny, but didn't they delete the plot from the first game, creating a clusterfrick for new players that began to be thrown in with no idea about what was happening in the story? That doesn't sound like the type of choice a developer that deserves my sympathy would make.

          Anonymous

they deleted a lot of content in Destiny 2 making it impossible for a new player to get into the game and even if they bought all the expansions, they wouldnt get access to all the story, missions and maps that bungie deleted. Bungie thought that they didnt need to pander to new players any longer for destiny 2 and their current base would be enough to print them money forever.

They weren't. What you need to understand is that the C-Suite doesn't care about the company, nor the product, they care about their compensation, and they'll trash everything else for it. Doesn't matter that Bungie is dying, I'm certain their execs are making out like bandits.

I rented it when I was 13 and fricking hated it. Gameplay was super jank as frick and I recall the voice acting was fricking terrible.

Voice acting is a little hammy, but the real problem was pretty boring level design. If the opening stage is a box filled warehouse you know there's going to be a problem. The combat has weight to it though, I like kinematic fighting because it doesn't feel like you're just causing a hurt box directly in front of you with your attack button, it feels like you actually connect with blows.

it's s flawed gem. First thing I remember about it is just how barren most of the levels felt both in decor and enemies. Gameplay was pretty good though.

    >What’s more, sources we spoke to pointed out that many of the Bungie employees who were laid off were beloved community leaders within the studio, including many who had spearheaded employee inclusion and support efforts.

    >Others laid off included a noticeable number of members of Bungie’s DE&I clubs, including co-heads of Pride@Bungie, Women@Bungie, and Accessibility@Bungie. When combined with other recent resource cuts, these dismissals have led to fears these clubs might be shut down.

    >While researching this article, IGN noted that the public news articles announcing Women@Bungie and Accessibility@Bungie on its official blog were no longer accessible on the Bungie website

Damn this is so sad, the fired noticeable number of members of Bungie’s DE&I clubs, including co-heads of Pride@Bungie, Women@Bungie, and Accessibility@Bungie.

Yeap, quite a bunch of IT/Tech/GameDev companies end up with company clubs, rep communities like pride, blm, lgbt, and other mishmash of ideology/DEI advancement shit which quickly grow from "clubs" to full on jobs for certain people inside the company. They are tolerated since "being the good guys" elevates the mood for some and brings in juniors, other idiots and whatnot and they usually don't ask much salary because they can't really thanks to actual work and performance metrics, but the moment the company receives any sort of turbulence it's back to fricking work and bring value or get axed. Simple as.

This. From the sounds of it Sony has SAVED Bungie. Without their cash injection the company would be fricked right about now.

It looks like everything rests on Marathon now. Nothing suggests that anything massive like a Destiny 3 is in development and I doubt incremental updates and episodes to Destiny 2 are going to keep the playerbase invested after the Final Shape campaign is done. The live service space is set to get a whole lot harsher when GTA 6 and it's online component comes out. It's going to suck a LOT of money out of the space and everyone one else will be fighting for scraps. Good luck maintaining Destiny 2 or launching Marathon in that market.

honest question: what "big acquisition" by either Sony or Microsoft continued to thrive after being purchased? because Bungie is dying, Bethesda is a shell of their former selves, and Activision is entirely dependent on COD's success and that brand appears to be on the decline.

Everything MS bought in the past 5 years has been bigger and better. Bethesda just launched their best performing game yet.

Meanwhile Sony has shut down multiple studios like Japan studios, Pixelopus, Evolution, Guerilla Cambridge, Manchester studios. Naughty Dog got gutted and had a large talent exodus after Neil Druckmann took over and overworked the studio to death, Media Molecule had it's founders leave and a large amount of staff fired recently. Bend studio had a few key staff leave too. Overall Insomniac's the only sony studio that thrived after being bought at Sony because they delivered 3-4 AAA games in the past 5 years and is quickly working on more.

      >Bethesda is a shell of their former selves
That happened long before MS bought them.
      >Activision is entirely dependent on COD's success and that brand appears to be on the decline
and here you're already admitting that they were going south already and the MS deal isn't even complete yet.
Aside from Rare, I honestly don't think the acquisitions themselves are what's killing the companies. They're doing a fine job of that themselves. Greed is what's killing them and Sony and MS are just taking advantage of that greed with their own greed and only want the IPs those companies hold. Technically it is in their best interest to kill them after acquiring them because that's fewer people to pay but they're doing a good job of slowly burning their own houses down by themselves. They just don't seem to realize it.

But the point is how they are already in the phase of brainrot that every gaas company reaches. There is a limit to how much money these games can make.

But suits' brains dont work that way, the line must always go up. So the fact of being incapable of making more money every year fricks them up.
So they reach that phase of destroying themselves in pursuit of profit.

gaas reaching market saturation also makes this even worse for them. There is a limit to how many people you can have playing gaas, and most of them already have their favorite games.

So it's not about just making a good game, it needs to be good enough to steal players from other companies.

Surprised that so few people on this shifty site are devs. Lunches and little classes cost very, very little to provide at scale and the boost to productivity is often worthwhile. I once worked for a company that provided a stocked kitchen and rows of stoves so we could make our own meals. This might sound wasteful, but it meant less time wasted walking to a restaurant, healthier employees, and we didn't feel as bad if we had to stay late and miss dinner with our families. Little perks like this also make the job feel high class, which encourages you to work harder. Cutting these benefits just tells the talented people that the good times are over and they should move on, leaving behind the least talented and motivated people, who are now even less motivated because their compensation is worse. Software isnt like working at a McDonald's: morale and comfort make a difference when the quality of your work matters. Sony is one of the most bafflingly stupid companies out there. Bungie doesn't need cost cutting, it needs a change in design leadership and maybe some better infra hires.

I agree, anon. It's the type of thing that you don't really understand if you haven't been there. Calling it "adult day care" is sort of in the ballpark since like you said, it's all dumb bullshit to placate feelings.

I remember taking a personality test for a promotion and one of the questions was multiple choice. It was asking me what would be the best way to motivate a team. It was
      >pizza party break on Friday's
      >bonus pay = to one work hour
      >complements
      >strong team bonds
I went for money because obviously one labor hour worth of cash is the greatest value. It was wrong; pizza party was the answer because while the value was worth a lot less and it cut into your break time, it felt special and was much more immediately noticeable than extra money on your paycheck. It's stupid but it makes perfect sense; people are Black personcattle

Software quality is based on the skills/merit of the individuals and having a good framework to cohere to.

They make those knitting classes so that the old guard white senior devs have a good 1-2 hours of silence not having to deal with the garbage DEI/adult daycare hires that just create lines and lines of spaghetti code that they have to deal with reworking or re-implementing later in code reviews.

If they have to choose between a bunch of seemingly small cuts like lunchs and cooking classes that DO add up in scale but that overall allow a few more devs to be saved, and the wannabe MBA heckin moralerino garbage you’re spouting off, they are going to keep those two employees

I am not sure what they expected. I mean Bungie had the opportunity to branch out into making itself a game making machine but instead focused on one project rather than being able to produce multiple games at the same time. Having only one franchise to fall back on has never works out in the long run for any company.

Not even that, Sony was into the whole gaas shit. So they chose Bungie because they have one of the most succesful gaas in the market, so they could also be consultants to Sony gaas projects.
This is why games like Factions got delayed. Bungie guys told sony how the model wasnt going to make enough profit.

The worst part is how they got bungie as consultants because of their gaas only to bungie bury itself soon after because of terrible management decisions. Funny.

No I know. That's my point. For how obnoxious and money grubbing and horrible those decisions are, people kept buying into it and putting up with them.

Yeah it made sense before, but look at the timing. It is like hiring a baker to run your bakery, but it's been 1 month since this baker made his own bakery go bankrupt. This is how Destiny is right now.

From leaked reports we know that Bungie was delaying fricking everything from Sony because of their arbirtrary gaas goals(factions was one of them). Now it seems like following Bungie's decisions is not a good idea.

I think Sony was fully aware destiny was on the outs. Business men are moronic but they arent so moronic, whoever was in charge of acquisitions knew microsoft, activision, and independently they werent solvent, so I can only imagine sony was holding on hope that theyd have 2-3 new games in the chamber, with reports that test groups fricking hated NuMarathon I think Sony is just fed up and knows now that nothing will work, but they cant outright say that because paypiggy investors dont like bad news

I guess they also thought it be a good "frick you" to Microsoft by buying the company that made their flagship series.

this. aint nobody planning these events outside of company time, and their game devs so no fewer than 20 people are doing this in a given work day

They probably wanted Marathon to compete with CoD as well as maybe a new IP to essentially replace Destiny with as a new MMO exclusive to Playstation.

As much as I hate California, it's not just a CaliHQ thing either (though they're certainly worse). Sony's also fricked over tons of games when Japan was in charge. Remember, they basically threw Demon's Souls PS3 out into the market to die without any help because it filtered some of their suits who played it (including then-president Shuhei Yoshida), but the second a different company talked with FromSoft and started publishing Souls games for them, it became an overnight industry darling. Sony's corporate structure is the one with the touch of death, it usually has very little to do with their partner devs themselves.

What's the Microsoft equivalent of the WiiU and Vita?

The vita wasn't remotely as bad as the WiiU. Nintendo literally almost died whereas Sony backed off and moved on.

Also the vita sold 16 million
                The WiiU sold 13 million.
Having your mainline console launch be that catastrophic is what makes Nintendo still struggle to keep up to this day. While Nintendo flopped the WiiU, the PS4 became the highest selling console.

Good. The last major expansion that was good was only that way because they brought in other studios under Activision to ship Forsaken. The dev-team has been gutted over a period of years and has been replaced with diversity hires who, regardless of passion for the game, are genuinely incompetent in major areas such as enemy design and programming.
Axe the managers next, and keep only the IP. Bring in some upstart middle-managers from Square Enix who worked on FFXIV and kick everyone else out. If the devs can't handle the culture shock, replace them with a weeb scab programmer. An incompetent codemonkey is more useful to a game's development than a competent troon, as the latter is an oxymoron.

Gotta feel for Bungie a bit, they felt too constrained by Microsoft and fricked off to Activision only to realise it was significantly worse there and went to Sony who are pretty much finically blackmailing them to the point Activision seemed generous.
Ironically they were at their best with Microsoft

You could probably say they weren't bungie since CE even either. Or maybe even Marathon 3.

what's Sony's plan here? They can't take over a hollow shell, and there are no IPs worth harvesting and rebooting via a zombie studio. It looks like a typical buy-and-destroy except there's no reason for Sony to do that; Bungie aren't a competitor

      >what's Sony's plan here?
This decisions weren't made by Sony. Sony in their buyout allowed them some indepence as long as they reach profit thresholds with said independent projects, otherwise Sony can kick the current board out.

They didn't reach those thresholds so the current board decided to fire employees to meet them. When one guy asked them "So why don't they cut their salaries?" they basically laughed it off and fired him kek.

the general consensus on destiny 2 was that it only got worse after activision, as activision was clearly whip cracking new expansions with truly new content and cosmetics. After the split most players feel that new content and expansions feel like recycled samey enemies and environments with cosmetics turned to 11. I hate activision and theyre certainly up there with EA but at least they were forcing Bungie to get some frickin work done

LS games have a shelf-life. Not a story or content or even microtransaction shelf life, that's all infinite. We're talking graphics, physics, and AI. By ~2017 to 2018, Destiny 2's engine and graphics were pretty dated. By 2019-2020, the entire community was pretty sick of Bungie's refusal to make Bungie 3 and completely overhaul their engine. Around this time, they started vaulting campaigns, cause their engine couldn't handle their ever expanding universe. Then their campaigns started to go to shit, imploding after The Witch Queen, and they got more and more greedy with the microstransactions.

Very likely, the story of Cade and Lance Riddick as Zavala carried the game really hard, but once the first was killed off and the second tragically passed away, the death bell of the game had finally rung. The last 2-3 expansions were terrible story wise and were so bad overall, it's starkly divergent to The Witch Queen, which the community felt like was a turn around for the dated spiral of the game. They introduced strand, then retconned it out of existence in the subsequent expansion. Prelude to The Final Shape was very meh, and their transgender character they introduced was obnoxious and summarily disliked by the community, shocking that.

Then they fired Marty, and went full scum by firing him in a way where they robbed him of his stock options that he had accumulated over the years and were almost about to vest, but technicality in the contract means it was above board. There's an ongoing lawsuit around that, I think.

Long story short, this company is fricked. It was fricked the moment the original Halo devs started leaving the company for other studios or going back towards making more Halo content. Destiny needs to accept its Destiny and die. It's overstayed its welcome and is no longer an interesting story or franchise. Marathon might save them, but without Sony's intervention and takeover, its unlikely to.

I have zero sympathy for them. They made one IP in the last decade and playing it feels more like work than fun. Just a hamster wheel they wanted players constantly running on that they increasingly monetized. They’ve had a fricking decade to fix Destiny’s abyssmal PvP situation and they haven’t. I haven’t played it in years, but is tired lame ass Gambit still the only other game mode!

Getting exactly what they fricking deserved.

How did this story get out?

There’s no advantage for anyone at Bungie to leak it, so who brought it to the press’ attention? Sony? Why let it become public knowledge well in advance actually having to make changes that you’ve given a developer a Final Notice essentially?

The entire tech market is experiencing a massive correction, because all the woke shit culture war is coming to a head; and the conflict breaking out in Israel with Hamas, has bubbled all the nasty shit on the left tot he surface in a way that moderates are going "hold up, the Republicans are making more sense than the champions of democracy and the progressives; what the frick." Add to that fire, the fuel of Disney imploding for the same-y reasons, and its kind of obvious why all the DEI job bloat is suddenly becoming massively unpopular leading to record breaking layoffs. The moment the DEI movement took off after the whole GamerGate bullshit, you can track a massive expansion in the job market where a lot of positions were created to expand and promote ideology more than new products or services--and in a way, that was okay, because interest rates were near 0 and money flowed as cheaply as 10 dollar bottled wine. But between the aforementioned conflict, Ukraine, pandemic, and inflationary factors, the real estate market is getting rat fricked because the pandemic led to WFH that was largely successful. It improved the environment, the air, improved mental and physical health; but at the cost of rat fricking all the people who had invested in the corporate market, oil and gas for the profits they made from everyone driving, all the autos from cars getting serviced (which wasn't happening cause no one was driving), etc. So, in a bid to prevent the bottom of the corporate real estate market falling out and sending the economy over the edge, the fed jacked up rates 5.5% in 2 years.

SUDDENLY, all that cheap and free money disappeared. Suddenly, the overhead of all these bloated companies that had more staff than the value of their products and services came to a head. It's the perfect storm and superfluous positions are the first to go when the economic belts tighten up. After all, Blackrock changed its tune on EGS the moment the free money printer stopped.

That was 300 thousand jobs in the span of 8 months.
That's 300 thousand Mutts transferred to foodstamps.
        Shit is breaking down.

          Anonymous

50% of that have been reindexed into new positions of equal or superior pay. The other 150k or so, are fricked. But that's a drop in the bucket for the larger market, for whom the interest rates are really holding down their face in the pillow while telling them to bite it and take it without a sound. The thing is though, when you expand your company with positions that are mostly fluff and put people who are ideologically motivated rather than engineering and service delivery motivated, you create the conditions where these people are going to scream the loudest and cause the most problems. When Disney lost its collective shit when South Park made fun of them over woke shit, is the biggest indication of this. The ruination of cherished values, ideals, and expectations by companies using entertainment as means to lecture others over cultural issues while the primary talkers are the most insensitive of the bunch, creates the exact set of situations where all this happens.

I wouldn't be surprised if Trump won 2024 and then started taking an axe to everything on this revenge tour. People are sick of this woke shit, but they don't really want a lunatic like him to be in power again--but would vote for him anyway, if the left doesn't get its shit together and put a lid on their own extremists. Otherwise, it'll make the 5.5% in 2 years look like a joke compared to the damage he'll do in his simping thirst to be a dictator.
