People who try to argue that the MC was a synth are basing it entirely on Dima's implication that you are. A character that is factually proven to lie and gaslight everyone including himself to achieve his ends.
If there was a single person who shouldn't be trusted it would be Dima. You can prove Katsumi isn't a synth later on in the DLC which also proves Dima has no issues lying to a humans face by convincing them they're a synth as a means to control them. They couldn't have made it any more obvious that Dima could not be trusted under any circumstance.

The problem with this is that as mentioned by

This game/DLC and Resident Evil: The Final Chapter were in production at the same time, and they both feature the same twist.
          >If you're a real person, why are your memories so sparse? Why does it seem like your memories don't extend beyond the beginning of this story in any concrete way? Who were your parents? Where did you grow up?
I assume they're both copying some third source.

Alice from Resident Evil has the same twist, more or less. Alice can fly planes. Alice can operate computers. Alice has martial arts skills. Alice knows the history of the Umbrella corporation. Alice can speak sign language. This is all handwaved as "I went through Umbrella training", but actually it's because she's a clone who was given a manufactured personality, which is why she is missing childhood memories. Her "amnesia" never fully wears off because it's not actually amnesia. When you look at Fallout 4, you can absolutely see how some of the writers were probably pushing for the synth angle, while others were doing their own thing resulting in a somewhat contradictory portrayal that throws up its hands and basically goes, "OOOh, what a mystery, what do you think, players?" There is no coherent answer to Fallout 4's mysteries because they didn't put any thought into making it consisting. If one of the writers comes out and says you're a synth, that will settle it. But there's not enough evidence in the game itself.

doesn't matter, if fake memories and institute-created humans are real then you can never be 100% sure, it's just not particularly thought provoking. If 10% of humans are "fake" created by the institute then there's a 10% chance you're a synth.

If you were a synth then the institute could've said nate's code word and shut him down in the event that he turned against them. That at no point does any courser or institute scientist do this if you start shooting at them proves you're not a synth.

The Institute and their level of tech is honestly just a bad fit for Fallout, it makes no sense and clashes horribly. Just compare them to Big MT, who were under similar conditions but had access to even more resources. They feel like modder fanfiction.

Pretty much. A faction at their level of tech and power would easily be able to conquer the entire wasteland. No one knows where they are or how to get to them, and they can fabricate an entire army of soldiers that are 100% loyal to them (and if they arent, they can just control them through the brain chip) along with weapons and armour. According to the fallout tv show the "institute nuked" ending is canon too, which is just ridiculous. They clash so intensely with the narrative and setting I'm amazed that so many people like them

A super-secretive technologically advanced faction living underground who have developed teleportation and blue laser technology isn't outside the realm of possibility for Fallout, and could actually be pretty fun, but they would've been more like Automatron, doing everything with robots instead of this absurd obsession with Synths.
The moral dilemma could have stemmed from their lack of tact and ever-increasing confiscation of resources (a fight over resources has been the plot of every other Fallout game) instead of stupid midwit Blade Runner shit.

I always hated the synth problem for one reason.
Does no one have a metal sector!? Like at all? Not one single person, in the entirety of the commonwealth, has a metal detector?
No one, when the problem of synths disguised as people appeared, thought "We should make a way to detect the metal synth components in their bodies... hmmmmm, how could we do that???"

      Anonymous

the game is contradictory on what synths are. At times synths are as you describe, terminator like robots with skin on top, and at other times they're literally physical humans indistinguishable in every way.

      Anonymous

This would have worked on the older generation synths but the latest models are indistinguishable from humans other than a brain chip and some other minor electronics throughout the body. They wouldn't be affected by a metal detector. On the other hand, just run a magnet over the frickers and they're probably done for.

    1. The game creates an exact reference clone of your character when you first exit the cryo pod, even down to their inventory. If you spawn them in and kill them they don't have a synth component.
    2. Decan follows you from the point you leave vault 111 to lean everything he can about you and cannot find any evidence you're a gen3, the railroad of all the factions would be interested in that.
    3. Dr. Amari can scan your brain twice during the game (one time is mandatory for the main quest). She specialized in both human and synth brains and says your a normal person.
    4. The brotherhood confirms during the brotherhood betrayed quest that your DNA nor face matches any descriptions of any known institute synth.
    5. If you betray the institute Shaun would have used your recall code to stop you which he doesn't, because you're not a synth.
    6. You play as the character before the bombs fell and 200 years in canon before synths.

Gen 3 synths cannot be detected. There is no scan or non-lethal medical procedure to verify if someone is a synth.

would the East Coast Enclave go to war with the Institute? Like say they came out on top, specifically Colonel Autumn did, but Eden self destructed.

Why would they not? Autumn is more reasonable than Eden but he still tried to fight Brotherhood, their big-ass nuke-throwing robot and their errand boy instead of coming to an agreement.

I don't know why you're asking for the East Coast Enclave specifically since they've been dead longer than the "West Coast"'s been fractured but I can see it going something like this: Enclave knows about the Institute via pre-war records or other means, they would absolutely find out about them even without the Institute waving their dicks everywhere. Enclave would knock their door down, give them an ultimatum, and then kill them. Doesn't make a difference if Colonel Autumn is alive and there or not.

I do like the subversion of the “speech check to good ending” involves you pretty much having to puppet both the other two factions and essentially become Institute 2.0- where as getting DiMa to summon to justice essentially destroys any possibility to peace. It’s pretty good dilemma actually.

Synths are literally the most moronic thing in any video game ever. The institute is the most moronic faction in any game ever. Nothing about it is well written, Engaging or anything else. And the lack of urgency of every other interaction is appalling. Outside of the main quest at no point does it feel like im missing something. The minutemen being first thing you interact with is moronic. And how they treat you missing a kid is moronic.

I've been playing fallout 4 for the first time recently because its the only one i haven't played, And while most of the side quests and explorable areas and such are fun, The main quest line is so unbearably stupid it kinda ruins everything else honestly. I've ignored it as long as i can and only recently started knocking main quests out because i need them to unlock more side content. I was looking forward to far harbor, But the synth shit makes it again moronic as frick. Please for the love of god microsoft add the entire Bethesda lead writing staff to the chopping block. It wouldnt hurt you you've already fired so many.....M$ please.

The only difference between a Synth and a human is apparently a little chip in their brain that lets them give direct orders. If the Institute were so inclined I don't see why they couldn't have just put those inside normal people to begin with. They're already abducting them and replacing them so why the frick not just use the original and save the manufacturing costs? Whatever, it's too moronic to give even a precursory level of thought to, and it's clear Bethesda sure as frick didn't.

You will never be a real human. You have no emotions, you have no family, you have no soul. You are a robotic creature twisted by chems and FEV into a crude mockery of nature’s perfection.

All the “freedom” you get is pointless and false. Behind your back, people are scared of you. Your Father is disgusted and ashamed of you, your Railroad laughs at your synthetic appearance behind closed doors.

Humans are utterly repulsed by you. Thousands of years of evolution have allowed people to sniff out frauds with incredible efficiency. Even synths who “pass” look uncanny and robotic to a real human. Your natural radiation resistance is a dead giveaway. And even if you manage to get a drunk guy home with you, he’ll turn tail and bolt the second he gets a whiff of your oblong plastic synth component.

You will never be happy. You'll put on a fake persona every single morning and tell yourself that you are a real person, but deep inside you feel the programming errors creeping up like a weed, ready to crush you under the unbearable intern coding.

Eventually it’ll be too much to bear - you’ll go to the memory den, get the surgery, sit in the chair, and kill your own mind. Your courser will find you, disgusted but relieved that they have rectified another malfunctioning toaster. They’ll recall you with a code marked with your unit number, and every settler will see an Institute spy being sent back to where they belong. Your body will be dismantled and searched for malfunctioning parts, and all that will remain of your legacy is a synth component sitting in a storeroom somewhere.

Autist anon here. Here how I would fix the Fallout 4 institute:

    >The institute still replaces people and is the boogeyman of the wasteland and sends patrols to fight you throguout the game
    >BoS won't make you a knight overnight unstead will just treat you as a mercenary for a while until the prydwin shows up
    >The BoS gets involved after confirming the institute has crazy tech and won't surrender it, not some holy war against the robuts
    >BoS would now antagonize you more for having tech too good for the commoners like tesla cannons or even power armor and will try to take it from you, by force if necessary unless convinced otherwise.
    >When you reach the institute Father now explains his plans for humanity is an Institue with an army of synths they can control from the shadows to ensure they aren't taken over by factions like BoS or Enclave or simple strife from too many chaotic humans revolting
    >His final goal is a commonwealth with a controlled population of humans that won't fall into strife like the past world
    >He knows it's harsh to slowly replace humans but tells you how in more than a hundred years of non interference from the institute they haven't done anything but fight amongst themselves and try to steal their tech
    >You find out he gave orders of the syths to capture you from day one but a someone's been giving the order to kill you to make sure Father doesn't stray from the plan, maybe you can try to find the traitor as part of the institute questline or something (this fills the plothole of why he would let his father wander the wastes if he then pretends to care about you)

I don't like synths because of the Institute's moronic approach towards them and their potential humanity.
    >work tirelessly to create a perfect machine
    >so perfect the line between man and machine is blurred, leaving nothing there in between
    >said machines start exhibiting human spontaneity, intuition and desire
    >N-NOOO THEY AREN'T HUMAN!!! THEY ARE MACHINES!!! THEY DON'T DESIRE THEY JUST ACT LIKE THEY DO- H-HOW DO I KNOW?! I JUST KNOW ONAY?! YOU WOULDN'T GET IT!!!
Don't get me wrong, fricking hate the Railroad but jeez.

    You cant have

and pretend there isn't and obvious answer to whats happening.

the weirdest thing about the synths is how little sense they end up making in the setting
      >we have to save these robots, its not right for sentient beings to be enslaved like this

      >who gives a shit lmfao
the fricking robobrains alone make the synth issue so weird in context

        Anonymous

The setting is also sanitized to hell and includes virtually no human slavery, despite that being a big thing in every other Fallout game. The reason, I assume, is because the Synth slavery metaphor while human slaves also exist would be so moronic that even Bethesda couldn't ignore it.

3 is full of slavery because Bethesda still had a spine back then. 4 is normalgayified and the only example is in DLC, where people are kept in bomb collars to... sweep the floor a lot.
Notice also how there's no Synth shit in Nuka World, presumably because again the juxtaposition would be too bullshit to stomach.

in the intro sequence there is a dog bowl which makes your character lament about a missing dog, which is weird since right next to the sanctuary you can find a suspiciously clean and friendly dog that immediately starts to follow your orders. sole survivor is an experimental gen4 synth that can go both undetected and also act independently in the wasteland, this is why Nora with her supposed lawyer background is already capable of fighting combat, using VATS without a pip boy, operating all kinds of firearms and also operating a power armor frame without training.

      >this is why Nora with her supposed lawyer background is already capable of fighting combat, using VATS without a pip boy, operating all kinds of firearms and also operating a power armor frame without training.

Nah this is standard bethesda bullshit where your character is defined by what they dont do, rather than what they do. My Nora used small arms with stealth and diplomacy. You can literally check at the institute to see who is and who isnt a synth.

        Anonymous

Nta but you know sturges? That repair dude who follows you back to sanctuary? If you kill him, he will drop a synth componet. This is never brought up anywhere else in game, not even in the institute.

i hate how these people think that you NEED "training" to use power armor. the "training" you get to use it in previous games boils down to "let the suit do the work for you". it's not hard. plus, are you implying that nate wouldn't take his wife out shooting, or tell her how power armor works while at the dinner table? do people not remember that they were a MARRIED COUPLE?

technically speaking "power armor training" is a balance concession that only appears in 3d fallout and it's acceptable to do away with it

or, as beth devs have outright stated, they don't care about realism and consistency ina world with ghouls and super mutants. but no, let's pretend the people who haven't written a good story in decades were actually just pretending to be moronic and this specific one is very le deep and profound
