I would have multiple playable characters who all go through a fricked up unique Freddy dream and survive, eventually crossing paths when all drawn to a place of significance for Freddy.

Something like RE8 at it's core along with a semi-open map, but also with a sleep mechanic where you have to stay awake or go to sleep in order to progress at certain points. The game would have ways of figuring out what scares you the most and Freddy will use that against you in your dreams. I know that gets suggested a lot but this is a game where that actually makes sense.

itle: Nightmare on Elm Street: Dream Hunter

      Gameplay Overview:

In Dream Hunter, you play as a teenage dream warrior who has been chosen to enter the dream world and hunt down Freddy Krueger, the infamous dream demon. The game takes place in two interconnected worlds: the real world and the dream world. In the real world, you explore various locations such as the high school, the town, and the protagonist's house, interacting with characters and gathering clues to help you progress in the dream world. In the dream world, you navigate through various interconnected dreamscapes, each with its own unique challenges and puzzles, much like the Metroid games.

The game is set up as a side-scrolling adventure game, similar to Little Nemo DreamMaster, with the added element of exploration and combat found in Metroid games. As you explore the dream world, you'll discover new abilities that will help you progress further into Freddy's nightmare realm. For example, you may gain the ability to double jump or use a grappling hook to traverse large gaps or climb walls. You'll also discover new weapons and power-ups that will help you defeat Freddy's minions and eventually take on the man himself.

      Storyline:

The game's story unfolds as the protagonist explores the real world and the dream world, uncovering clues that will lead them to Freddy's lair.

As the game progresses, the protagonist will encounter various characters from the Nightmare on Elm Street series, such as Nancy Thompson, Kristen Parker, and Alice Johnson, who will offer hints and advice on how to defeat Freddy. In the dream world, the protagonist will also encounter various familiar locations from the films, such as the boiler room and Freddy's house.

        Gameplay Features:

        Side-scrolling adventure gameplay
Interconnected real world and dream world
Exploration and puzzle-solving in the dream world
Combat with Freddy's minions and bosses
Gain new abilities and power-ups to progress through the dream world
Encounter familiar characters and locations from the Nightmare on Elm Street series

Overall, Nightmare on Elm Street: Dream Hunter is a unique blend of two classic game genres that offers a fresh take on the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. The game is designed to be challenging but rewarding, with a deep and engaging storyline that will keep players hooked until the very end.

I think you should be stuck in a forest and it's a four player co op game and you have to repair five generators to make gates open so you can escape the forest, free of freddy's terror. you see freddy stalks the forest and actually it's a five player game, because someone plays as freddy. freddy will chase you and use his terrifying powers of unknowable limits to create pools of blood on the floor that make you slower if you touch them. if freddy catches you then he'll do his iconic 'pick you up over his shoulder' move and then hang you on one of his trademark hooks. if you get hooked three times you die. but by the way you have a sleep meter and you fall asleep after about a minute which doesn't do anything except freddy's blood pools can only affect you when you're asleep. the environment stays exactly the same and you can even see the other players who are awake but a funky dream texture covers everything. you can touch ringing alarm clocks to wake back up for a minute. the game takes about ten minutes to complete. what do you think?

It's like Soul Reaver but you play as Freddy and you shift between the real world and the dream world. When in the real, you cannot kill people and most physical objects cannot be interacted with. You traverse the real world as an invisible ghost, looking for a "way in", which is usually a sleeping victim. Sometimes you can frick with people who are awake by haunting them with visions and whispers, which drives them to drink alcohol and take sedatives, and fall asleep more quickly.

Freddy provides an amusing running commentary on all the game's events.

I could see a Freddie rouge like game working. Where every time you fall asleep being more difficult but when your awake you can spend hours to gain buffs at the cost of say stamina when asleep or something.

The first and second movies are good, and they nearly made a nice comeback with New Nightmare, but it was too late. The franchise was already ruined with comedy shit.

Play as 4-6 kids. Probably kill one or two off right away if 6. Alternate between awake segments that are mostly Telltale plus some mild stealth elements (sneak into hospital, break friend out of jail, sneak out of your house) where you gather clues and resources. Occasionally fall asleep then have the more survival-oriented segments where each kid has a dream power they can use as you try to survive Freddie.

Don’t have a dream meter, or make it a vague one, so you don’t know for sure when you’re gonna’ fall asleep, just when you’re close, and you don’t know you have until you start seeing weird stuff.

Perhaps have sections where an awake character has to rush to get to an asleep character to wake them, and the time you take to reach them is then the time you have to survive in a dream as the sleeping character.

I’m just not sure if the events should be very scripted and on rails theme park game; or if it should be more open and focus on letting you freely switch between the different teens and more about managing where everyone is and their sleep levels.
