Visible face is fine, but I like the plating and bulk, it looks like a really cool suit and I would like the design to be reused by more competent devs.

They put shitload of effort to have the faces animate correctly, so of course they wanted them to be visible.

Visible faces in civilian space suits are less jarring anyway that helmetless soldiers.

what does horror game even mean anymore? the last good psychological horror games were made 10 years ago

      Anonymous

      Horror means horrific in theme
      Doesn't NEED to be "scary"
Doesn't NEED to be a gorefest
Doesn't NEED to be psychological, metaphysical or any other subgenre of horror

That's why zombies are a staple of horror even though they themselves aren't scary. The idea of a virus turning people into brainmunching dead walkers is horrifying

        Anonymous

Isn't it just that the term "horror" is misused, when what is actually being described is "terror?" Terror is sensory, horror is perceived, and both are ultimately regarded as whatever mentally disturbs a person.

          Anonymous

Horror can be used as a synonym for terror sure when describing emotions.
Being terrified is about fear, it's the descriptor for being more afraid.
Horrified has a broader scope, is means you are feeling horror as a concept, that can include "being terrified", but it also includes things like being disgusted, unnerved or shocked, which terrified isn't.

            Anonymous

Agreeing with you anon, but the semantics you're arguing lack the nuance of having the two terms be qualifiers from the state someone is in: horror is mental, terror is emotional and physical; for example, you would be horrified by an eldritch entity because you cannot comprehend thus feeling terrorized, while, similarly, you would be terrified during a home invasion attempt but not horrified because the concept is rather banal mentally.

It doesn't matter if it sold 2 million, its sales target was 5 million, and according to the publisher it never even sold 2 million copies.

I don't know. A quick google search shows they sold 2 million. I'm surprised they set such a high target. Especially for a horror game.

There isn't a single source saying the game sold 2 million copies. The publisher said that htey expected 5 million as their sales target because the game was extremely expensive. They also said that based on how poorly it was performing they stated that it would struggle to even hit 2 million. They never said it sold 2 million, morons read this and thought that it did, though.

Depends on what you consider was the most wrong about the first game, really.
I know people chide it, but I do think meele combat can be better for horror games overall because it means to take out the baddies you have to get close and therefore puts you in more danger.

This game was an interesting case study that shows why modern gaming is do safe and devoid of experimentation/innovation.
Most people didn't figure out the gameplay and called it badly designed because they went in with preconceived expectations about how a game should be designed. The general consensus was a lot of pissing and moaning about how the mechanics were braindead and the gameplay too easy, but the game was badly designed because it swarmed you with enemies who would hit you while you were dodging or from behind and it wasn't fair game design. People had no frame of reference to conceive of dodging as anything except a damage-negating reward for correct input timing. CP turned this on its head and made dodging a guaranteed deathtrap that locks you into passivity while you get swarmed by enemies and eventually killed. The clue for this was exactly that dodge didn't require input timing. This alone should have been raising alarm bells and getting people to question why. Instead they just screeched that the game didn't work like every other game. The point I'm trying to make is that it's very very hard to buck design trends, because people will just see it as bad game design.

This. Dead Space OG was a game that never needed to be remade because of how well it stands up to today.
The remake is interesting from the perspective of "what could Dead Space have been were it made by a different studio at a different time for video games," what with the new mechanics and reworked narrative, but otherwise the price point and the feel of OG makes it handedly the better option of the two.
At least Callisto was a new IP -excluding the PubG connection- even if it is shit.

The game ran really badly on release. December 3rd 2022. Framerates were something like 45~60fps with i9's on launch day. It was patched two days later on December 5th, which owed a lot to its subsequent success, and much to its criticism. The game itself is solid as hell, has no real glitches, hard issues with storytelling, or mechanical issues with music, tone, or atmosphere. It does everything it ought to do well, but the general joie de virve nowadays is to see what novelty a game has, which Callisto Protocol has little of.

This intellectual jouissance kills off genuinely good games because novelty becomes a replacement for originality or creativity. Think of Sonic Rush and how it is novel, boostshit makes it seem cool and fun, but it's just a new idea adapted from some of the 3D titles. The real success of Sonic Rush comes from how well its made, but people remember it for the novelty.

You're supposed to kill the enemies in Callisto Protocol, not run from them; so it makes combat feel unproductive and dangerous. People have gotten used to running from enemies in Survival Horror, because of that need to flee constantly forced combat feels like it shouldn't be there: but it is there, and generally rewarding if you actually spent time reading the tutorial.

It's not like Resident Evil 2 Remake and Resident Evil 4 Remake where you can run away from 80% of the encounters and feel like a boss. You actually have to kill the Biophage to proceed a lot of the time, or doors will stay locked down in quarantine.
