Trying to play strength dps (roll r1) doesn’t work in ER because you’ll either get attacked during recovery frames or be stuck doing r1s at the end of long ass combos. You’re meant to bait bosses’ charges/jumps then punish using a high damage ash or jump r2 (this only works with UGS). It’s boring and feels like cheese.

The game has a lot of fun spells and miracles, also there is a lot of very good mixed Strenght/Int and Strenght/Faith weapons.
This is my current run build that I'm doing out of fun, sadly these are the only 3 weapons that have access to quad scaling so I didn't have much build freedom.

        Anonymous

Any build is viable and fun in this game, but you have to level vigor. Anything less than at least 40-50 vigor by end game is just suffering unless you are perfect at dodging. And dodging attacks is way less intuitive in this game in the sense that it's not just matter of timing, often more importantly, positioning. But sometimes like in the case of Melania, it's just moronic unplaytested bullshit.

Your complaint is a legitimate one. I get that they expect you to level your HP as the game goes on. But the fact that even at 50 vigor and with no damage-taken debuffs, late game bosses can 2-hit true-combo you and kill you if you whiff dodging certainly attacks is pretty ridiculous.

It's not really a coincidence that anytime you invaded a player, even when the game was first coming out, they'd have a co-op buddy at all times and they were rocking Sword of Night & Flame, Moonveil, or Rivers of Blood. I don't think they're any worse than me, it's just how they want to experience the game and have fun. If Elden Ring didn't have OP shit for casual players to abuse in PvP & PvE, it would just not have the amount of players it has, plain and simple.

this right here. have played these since DS1 came out on ps3/xbox. And the weakest part of all the games is the point back when you were learning these games still, and you'd just be stuck running from the same bonfire, skipping the same shit enemies in your path just to learn the boss again and get stomped the frick out. Or farming inefficiently to TRY and be stronger unless you were cheating with dupes or some sort of wienerery. Elden Ring is the ultimate "Don't give a frick do what you want" game. Once you've beaten it enough times, you know how to dismantle the open world and how to become gigachad tier in the first hour of the game. It took wayyyy more work in every other game to get a +9 weapon in the beginning, elden ring just asks you to find the materials necessary.

It's open world and the prevalence of souls games has increased with each major release.
      >How do new players enjoy it
They look up guides and get more vigor. The cap for when vigor stops just giving you more and more health is 60 iirc. At that point most of the earlygame is just tickles and lovetaps. The game is hard to old players because it turns all of your old habits and muscle memory into deathtraps.

DaS1 pretty much does the same thing, just with less copypasted filler. There are usually a few places you can go even if they're all equally terrible. Makes me wish I had gone into DaS1 completely blind so I would have an unbiased impression of that, I just know where everything is now.

Am I remembering wrong or was this uncommon in original Dark Souls? Unless you obviously fricked up and took a giant hammer to the face, OHKO attacks weren't that common. Now there's so much OHKO stuff, and a lot of it happens so quickly you can't reasonably avoid it the first time so it becomes trial and error.

Yeah I don't really like Elden Ring's approach to difficulty by increasing everything's damage to insane levels.
Getting to mountaintops and having a small demi human chunk your hp at 45 vigor just doesn't feel right, also I just did Malenia again and I completely forgot how her weakest attack does so much damage.
On an entirely different note, smithing stone upgrade requirements should be reduced to 1/2/3 for each stone level, needing 12 stones for each level just limits how many different weapons you can try out in a run without needing to start farming enemy drop rates.

The amount of smithing stones required is a big problem. It has been said before, but it totally discourages players from experimenting with different weapons and builds. Kind of a bummer that you have to start an entirely new character just because you don't have smithing stones.

I hope you guys are aware that you can get bell bearings that allow you to buy all levels of smithing stones (normal and somber) except for dragon smithing stones. you can't upgrade all of your weapons to +25 (+10 if they're unique) in a single playthrough, I'll give you that, but at least you can upgrade them all to +24/+9

and also, if you were to upgrade one weapon to the point where you still need an ancient dragon smithing stone, and you realize it's not as powerful as you thought, you have now wasted a shit ton of runes, time and stones that could've been spent strengthening another weapon.

With summons, and by choosing an OP class at the start. Also, guides on where to find the best loot.
I played as Wretch and, after booting the game and getting my ass kicked for two hours straight, I had the same thought: "How the frick is a new player ever going to beat this game."
Then I saw a friend of mine pick Samurai, go straight to Margit, and beat the boss in two tries by just R1ing his ass while summons took aggro.

Elden Ring is the easiest Souls if you're willing to use all the tools at your disposal. Even with my self-imposed limitations, it was fairly easy except for the very start and the very end. I felt overleveled from Liurnia to Farum Azula basically.

The people having the hardest time with this game are, unironically, the brainless fromshit fans who try to play it like it's demon's souls and get mad when their one weapon, one strategy, no items gameplay gets them killed. Elden Ring has more bullshit bosses and higher difficulty, but the level of gear, weaponry, special abilities, and yes, summons and ashes, make you so ridiculously overpowered the game is a joke.

Don't forget that FROM games lean into the ability to get help from the community. New players explore a bit and when they get stuck either summon help or look online for things they're missing. Summons plus magic solves a solid chunk of the early game. Margit is literally
    >Summon wolves
    >Back off
    >Throw pebbles at him while the wolves draw aggro
    >Roll about if you draw his aggro and the wolves will redraw it quickly
Then as you get into the middle game you can experiment more with different builds/weapons but most people who play magic have grow accustom to their pebbles.

Open world. GRRM attached as a writer, which did wonders for publicity. New multiplatform IP, whereas Bloodborne was a PS4 exclusive and Dark Souls 3 was, well, Dark Souls 3.

As for how normalgays play the game, there's a myriad of easy mode options built into the game, without the game explicitly telling you you're playing on easy mode. Summoning spirit ashes is the biggest one. Here's how my 3 normalgay friends beat the game:
          >Bloodhound's fang DEX/ARC build (for rot breath) with mimic tear
          >Moonveil INT/DEX build with mimic tear
          >Dual bleed-infused curved sword build with mimic tear
It's a very approachable game, much easier than previous games even if you're playing singleplayer. As long as you use the easy mode weapons and summon.

Apparently it'll follow through the second you press L2, so if you're getting constantly staggered it can be a nasty surprise for people dog-piling you.

The tastes of the public are changing. Look at what the most popular games are nowadays: Dota and League, CS and Valorant, Apex and Fortnite. These are all pretty hard games. Not to mention how indies are selling better than ever.
Fifteen years ago the best selling games were either moviegames, or ultra-casual stuff on the DS and Wii.

    Spirit summons.
It's also much easier to make a powerful character in Elden Ring compared to other souls games since the game is so open with so many powerful weapons and tools to find.

it was my first souls like, i beat it in 80hrs including all achievement bosses. I wanted to play as my favourite character, Gatsu from Bjerk so my friend told me where to get his Golden Age Greatsword.

My friend kept telling me where to find cool items and other weapons that would help me with my Strength build. I said thats cool, but no thanks. I have my Guts Sword. Just tell me where the bosses are and let me do my thing. I didn't use summons because I didn't know where to get the bell but I would not have bothered anyway because all I need to be is Guts. Melania took me 30-40ish tries and that was the most attempts i've had on any boss. I beat Godfrey/prostitutealoo on my 2nd attempt (1st attempt at his 2nd phase, which I never got to see the suplex move until my friend told me what I missed out on). I also beat that dog in the crumbling venezuela the first time i ever got to his 2nd phase. his first phase fricked me up like 8 times tho

Game was fun, not entirely hard but I just needed to know where one weapon was and it's not a crazy weapon but it is the only reason I kept on playing. Do live out my fantasy as being Gadzooks from Brioche

I just picked what ever looked cool, so faith/strength with a scythe I found up in limgrave, worked fine for me
I had to ring the bell on malenia tho, I was close to getting her raw but lost patience in the end, the whole final stretch of the game started feeling like a chore tbh

What "build"? You just slap on some HP and STR and you slam. ER is also by far the easiest souls. It only becomes hard post leyndell, which I assume is where many of the casuals got filtered, but this is enough for them to "love" the game, having done the easy first 80% of it.

that's a valid way to play the game and there are a lot of enemies you can't parry. the fact that many bosses require multiple parries before they can be riposted also shows that the developers put more thought into it than they have in the past.
        it's just another option.

          Anonymous

Wish you could parry more enemies in this game, and also love the multiple parry system. Kind of also wish that they never made an enemy ripostable but just staggered them for a couple free hits. Parries let you keep playing the game rather than have to sit back while the boss has a meth fit

            Anonymous

i rarely take the riposte anymore. not only is it better to do a fully charged r2 or a big l2 on stagger, it just feels better. it's like the opposite problem i had with MH world / rise where you were being suboptimal if you didn't play the stupid stagger minigame every time it came up and the awareness ate into you even if you hated doing it.

Elden Ring has a lot of crutches to lean on, once you get Moonveil, Mimic Tear, Bloodflame Blade/Fire's Deadly Sin, Tiche or whatever else you can just start blowing through it, and even in the early game before that stuff becomes available you can just go off and explore somewhere and end up overlevelled for whatever boss you were struggling with before.

Have you payed Champion's Ashes for Dark Souls 3? It's probably the most refined overhaul mod I've ever played and is still in active development. Looks pretty great if you download the upscaled texture mod and use a decent ReShade, too.
As for Elden Ring, it's very early in the game's lifespan. I don't know what the frick people are thinking putting out overambitious overhauls so early.

Exactly, I mean these guys obviously have some passion and ability for modding so I don't know why they don't try to make smaller scale projects individually that could then be put together on the user's end when multimodding gets figured out for the average soulsgay. In it's current state most people can't be fricked doing the work on their side to make mods work together with animstudio/yapped

I went full STR build, sprinkled with some FTH, and I don't think it's that hard. Sure, bosses are challenging enough but that's kinda the point. Also mimic tear is super OP. People made Malenia out to be the most difficult boss in gaming history, so I whipped my mimic tear out after just a couple tries because I thought it'd be a challenge with it. Won on my second go with it.

I know no one asked, but I know I'm gonna get shat on for it; I am planning to do NG and beat all the bosses, or at least most (and especially Malenia), without the spirits.

This is going to be hard to believe but I've never owned a console. I've been a pc gamer since childhood. My friends also play on the pc. We didn't have souls games. Dark Souls was a horrendous port initially. It is probably the worst port I have ever seen.

As a result, I never played souls games until Elden Ring. My favorite games are big, long, complex open world RPGs with lots of exploration and lots of items and weapons and lots of different builds. Elden Ring is perfect for me. I started out playing ER as though I was playing Skyrim, and I was getting absolutely wrecked. I reverted to my pc RPG origins -- good ol' sword and board. Still got wrecked.

Then, I paid careful attention to the info the game gives you. I read everything. I started trying out everything, every move, every button. That's when I learned how to parry with the shield and stagger enemies. That changed everything for me. Everything fell into place from there. I started to get a feel for dodge-rolling. I started paying very very close attention the the enemy moveset. I became obsessed with shields. I used parry like crazy. I found a shield with 100% damage absorption. I went full sword and board.

And then I started to be able to kill without the shield. I paid close attention to things that had similar features.. bleed was my favorite. I used anything with bleed. The "paying close attention" thing became an obsession. My roots are pc RPG, so I loved the leveling up in Elden Ring, looking at upgrading which attribute improved which stat. I loaded up on STR and DEX and then upgraded VIG.

I just really enjoyed exploring, finding weapons, acquiring runes, and leveling up. I searched in every crack and crevice. I used the map a lot, used those custom markers a lot to remind me to go back to places that needed further exploration. It felt like the game took me along by the hand slowly, teaching me how to play. Somewhere around half way through, I wasn't using shields or summons. Love this game

It's just not their type of game. After playing all of FromSoft's games (minus Bloodborne because of the FPS lock) I can easily say it's their best and that none of the Dark Souls games even come close. its good to finally play a game that is challenging, where you continuously play and become better at the game to then defeat the hard content, i also really like that there is no difficulty settings this means if you beat the game you beat it no bullshit about oh but you didnt do hard mode etc.

the only cheese was magic and this was my first souls game i went berserk great sword i had tons of fun with this game and made me look at single player games in a different light

I thought it was more frustrating than Demon's Souls tbh, in DS the path forward was always clear. In ER I was always under leveled because you're supposed to scourge every fricking place available before fighting bosses and that was super frustrating. I couldn't even see the entrance to half the mines without looking at guides. Npcs are impossible to find. Then you realize you're just wasting hours and it's easier to snipe the fricking bird. Yeah. My roommate hadn't played any of the games before. He got filtered by one of the watchdogs in a Limgrave catacomb or something based on what he was telling me and then looked up some meta build guides. I dunno if he actually ended up beating the game or not.

That's the worst part about Melania IMO. Not knowing when you are able to punish her because she has so long to decide whether or not she will continue a combo and you have almost no idea when she will pull out an attack that is guaranteed to kill you depending on how far away from her you are.

Don't forget inconsistent staggering. Sometimes a boss will get staggered by your attacks, sometime they will not. And its usually after they begin an attack, but the biggest problem there is that bosses will sit idle and wait to attack until they read your inputs so they will begin their attack after yours starts, and then they will hit you as a result.

It essentially boils the game down to memorizing the bosses to learn very specific windows in which you are allowed to hit them and praying that you get good RNG that presents those opportunities often enough that you don't run out of heals or that they don't pull out an undodgeble super attack that instakills you before you are able to beat them.

It's by far the most difficult in many ways, but at least you can go somewhere else in the world and level up by having all kinds of adventures.

I tried Demon's Souls back on PS3 and it turned me off in an hour. Since then, I've wanted to try them all as they came out, but the reputation of being extremely hard caused anxiety. I really liked the lore aspect and enemy designs, but didnt want to invest time in causing myself frustration and rage. Finally picked up Elden Ring about a month ago and went in with a pally build since Guard Counters sounded forgiving. I just 'beat' the game (walkthrough and mimic tears) and honestly, it's probably my favorite game since MGSV. There are numerous ways to gimp the difficulty to near non-existence, and I'm looking forward to BB and DaS.

They basically mass downloaded that shitty easy mode mod. It was the most popular mod for the game because normalgays are shitters.
They also looked up broken bullshit builds.

The Godskin Apostle does this attack in phase one where he spins around twice and it seems basically unrollable if you're in close range, but sometimes if you just stand next to him it won't do any damage - only sometimes though, the hitbox is really fricking arcane.

I've research this exact attack online and there's only one post on a random forum that even mentions it. Does anyone know which attack I'm talking about?

I think I know which attack you are talking about, but I really don't remember how I dodge it outside of parrying, have you tried jumping the first spin and R2 so that you crouch and the second spin misses?

Is it when his body extends or not? I think I may know what you are talking about.

No, it's in phase 1 and it's not the three hit combo either. It's the one he sometimes uses after the hook attack or randomly where he spin slashes to his left once and then immediately does it again to roll catch. Every video I've watched on Godskin Apostle just has them be out of range before the attack starts.

I was actually going to try parrying him with a buckler, but I think I bricked my game by killing the guy you're supposed to get it off in Stormveil. I'll try to see if jumping R2 work.

There is an attack that I can recall in phase one where he spins around twice. If it's the one I am thinking of, you can dodge it if you do two immediate frame perfect dodges in a row, or in other words, panic roll the frick out of it. I almost always dodge that one.

Do you do it in a specific direction? Every time I panic roll or do two consecutive dodges I just get hit still.

          >buckler
Any small shield with parry or medium shield with storm wall are good enough.

Never played a souls, never looked up a thing. Beat every boss solo, minus the last three because I was getting exhausted after 100 hours and wanted it to be over.

I think Elden Ring is actually the easiest From game so far. There are so many different options of OP shit that you never once have to actually sit down, git gud and learn the game if you dont want to. Not to mention you can have summons play the whole game for you.

Miyahacki made power leveling as easy as ever plus all the gamebreaking unbalanced equipment and queer high damage no risk anime moves. It's not even souls anymore
