Been playing GTA 3, which was the only one of the original 3d games that I didn't play. It's not as bad as I thought it would be, but it falls very short when compared to VC and SA. Shooting is a pain in the ass and the game is just ugly. Still, I find it better than LCS.

Been playing Dark Cloud and am having lots of fun with it. I’m in the 5th floor of the wise owl forest. Any tips for a beginner player? Only issue I have is with money. I feel like enemies barely drop any cash

Xiao is amazing and you're still in the hobo phase. Really use whatever character you like and try to give them all some attention. Taking some risks and exploring back floors can be very rewarding and if you delay rebuilding villages some will give you free supplies as you need then. Try to get a grip on good progression and stat distribution on weapons now. The next dungeon requires good understanding of weaknesses to progress smoothly.

Did we play the same game? She literally does a miniscule amount of damage. Only use is hopping over things, flying creatures, and scanning the enemies with the talkative slingshot.

Revisions happened occasionally, they couldn't go back and alter shipped copies, but as new batches were produced, the devs might go "Man, we really should fix that one bug." and thus runs made after a certain date are basically v1.1

Mother on the Famicom comes to mind, where on the first batch of carts the ending sequence straight up isn't in the game because it didn't exist yet, and that was rectified in continued production.
Wolfenstein 3D on the 3DO is another, where nobody noticed that the compiler fricker up (IIRC), and once you reached a certain level it would freeze. They fixed that in following production batches, and if you had the original one you could complain to them and get a fixed copy mailed to you if you sent your old one in.

You can see this on sites hosting ROMs, where as you scroll down you'll see a second entry for a game which is labeled v1.1, maybe even v1.2. This wasn't really the norm, but it happened.
What happened a little more was that bugs were fixed or gameplay was tweaked during localizations, so a game might release in the US first, but when releasing in Europe they were not 100% the same.

          >Mother on the Famicom comes to mind, where on the first batch of carts the ending sequence straight up isn't in the game because it didn't exist
Source on this? As far as im aware, no Famicom copies ever had the ending, only the unreleased english version and later the Japanese GBA re-release.

If you want an example of reprinted altered games though, usually Greatest Hits PS1 stuff had updates. Spyro 3 being a big one.

I've been using my PS2 for RE 1-3, but I plan on playing Code Veronica X , RE4 and Sub Rebellion once I beat RE3. Might start a new Dark Cloud game as well, I played quite a few hours of it a few years back but forgot where I was and what I had done, and since I have both games just sitting in the cases it would not hurt to complete them.

It's just re4, compared them recently mostly seems fine so just play whatever you want. Hardly seems like something to waste energy over.

        Anonymous

It's entirely playable, but RE4 has been ported to everything and it's easy to just get the better experience on another machine.

I could play it using my GC/Wii but dunno.

If you have it on Gamecube, I would suggest that instead. Optionally on Wii if that port lets you play it normally with a controller (I don't remember). The Wii's wagglan controls makes the aiming and shooting way too fast and easy IMO.

not him but RE4 on PS2:

I think that it's an adequate port which accounts for the PS2's comparatively much weaker hardware.

I guess the simplified graphics weren't as noticeable when I played it back in the day, because I had a modestly sized and cheap CRT which didn't exactly have a good display (trying to play Skyrim with the thing on PS3 years later, I found the text was absolutely fricking unreadable unless I sat like 10" from the fricking thing, and it was a struggle even then).
My first time playing RE4 was on a PS2 way back in maaaybe 2008, so perhaps that clouds my judgment some, but I thought it was an incredibly fun and cool game which I'd replay numerous times, I loved the gameplay to pieces and adored the almost Army Of Darkness-like camp with all the gnarly horror monsters (Regeneradors were 2spooky4me). Of course I wasn't nearly as good at videogames back then, so I probably didn't appreciate how easy it was.

Much later on, I'd replay it on a much nicer flat screen TV with the PS3 port, which I guess has the better Gamecube visuals. I didn't know at the time that the graphics were heavily dialed back on PS2, that the Gamecube version looked much better, nor that it was easier.

I had beaten RE DS, 2 and 3 about a decade ago. Bought Director's Cut and beat that and both discs of 2 and it's a game that at least for me I tend to do horribly at until I get a few hours into it, or get enough ammo to just kill everything which invalidates most threats. Surprisingly tough if you do not play the games on a regular basis or speedrun it.

not him but RE4 on PS2:

Lately I've been working on finishing the postgame of Dragon Quest VIII. Had a blast with that game.
I'm probably gonna play Xenosaga next as I already kinda started it. It's cool but I'm still figuring out how to get gud.
My buddy and I have been playing Call of Duty 2 Big Red One together taking turns. He played it alot back in his day and this is the first time I have. It's pretty decent for a ps2 shooter and we've been having fun.
And of course I'm always playing Gran Turismo 4 here and there as it's my favorite. I'm working on getting gold on license and beating mission 11.

Also, whoever recommended Portal Runners in a thread awhile ago. That game is ass. Had fun playing it with a buddy playing PVP and laughing at it though.
We played the japanese Gunbuster game that night too. Having fun making up stoopid dialog for the characters since we can't speak nihongo. Game itself looks good and it plays good, but there's hardly any substance or actual game. I frickin love Gunbuster though.

      >Dark Cloud 2
      My homie
I'm pretty biased, but I think all of them are great to good. 5 is my favorite in the series so far. If you play all three back to back, I think you'll notice how each of the games' systems are iterations on each other.
Really liked the job system in 5 and Blue Magic. Some of it is pretty obtuse and I don't blame anyone for needing a guide, but it's hilarious to kill instakill certain bosses with Lvl 5 Death because their level just happened to be divisible by 5

        Anonymous

        >5 is my favorite
I've never heard anyone talk about 5. I'm excited to hear you liked it. It's pixelated, right? The only Final Fantasy games Ive played are 1, Kingdom Hearts, and Vincent Valentine's No Good Very Bad Day.
I'm assuming it will be more character/plot focused than Final Fantasy 1, but from what you say it still hasn't thrown away mechanical depth in terms of job classes. I think I will start with 5 then.

          Anonymous

5 doesn't have as much character/plot focus 6 or 7, just to give you an accurate expectation. It's a very "by the books" sort of deal, but the systems and gameplay are it's strengths I would say.

Compared to FF1, then yeah it's very much more complex in direct story. Pretty much every game after is.

Hope you have a good time though.

I've been spending a lot of time with my Dreamcast and PS2 recently. I'm about halfway through a (5th?) replay of Ace Combat 5, halfway through my first run of MGS2 and just getting to international races in GT4.

How do you tolerate missions Handful of Hope and Final Option?

Time has been limited, so only getting to play some Wordle and on the PS2, just Virtual View Megumi Eyes Play. The Matrix was really big for the PS2, so playing around with bullet time is pretty cool.

Anyone ever tried running MGS 2 substance through OPL off their HDD and just got a black screen? How did you fix it? Google can't tell me anything useful

Probably requires a compatibility setting in OPL that you'll need to find online. This is the reason why I switched to using a bc ps3 since you can mount iso files without using some jank hacks.

God I've been trying but I can't find SHIT that works, does anybody here have any input? I've tried the most common compatability settings listed for OPL (mode 2, 4, 6 etc) so I think this requires a specific solution. I might just buy the disc since the PAL copies are cheap on eBay if nobody pulls through

Latest I've played through was Onimusha 2. I thought I had played it before, but I hadn't, or at least not that I remembered. It felt like a step down from the first one. Onimusha was one of my favorite games back then, it had such a perfect, straight horror tone to it that I loved. I thought 2 injected too much silliness and comedic elements(Gogandantess, Ginghamphatts, all the side characters). Also, Samanosuke was a cooler protagonist than Jubei. Still not a bad game, though...

now that's a game worth playing.

    Yakuza 2
I really enjoyed 1 and am pretty close to beating 2. I think I liked 1s story a lot better so far though.

    >Already own an original release copy of MGS3, the Essentials Collection release which was just the first disc of Subsistence with a new label, and the MGS HD Collection for my now dead PS3
    >Genuinely considering shelling out for an actual copy of Subsistence proper just for that second disc with the MSX games
Goddammit why am I like this

Man, I just went to /vr/ on a lark after years of not checking this place out and I'm so glad it was finally updated from 2000 to 2007. This is the nostalgia I want.

I wish Yu-Gi-Oh duelist of the rose had an online mode community like RE outbreak. Absolutely loved alternate interpretations of the YGO monsters in different game formats. Me and 2 other friends would have custom battles in it, but we'd have to turn away from the tv while someone was picking their cards from the hand. It was acceptable when we were younger, but now i feel like a fricking idiot doing it,

    >the game is so much fun. Even more so than forbidden memories.

Also I love Godzilla save the earth. The mini games as Godzilla 2000 and MOUGERA were fun to grind for higher scores
