Loved it when i played it, waiting on full release now.
What i really liked about it is that you generally have a static decksize so it's more about running with what you get and adapting instead of minmaxing and trimming your deck to be as small as possible.

Is the MtG Shandalar game the only card game with an explorable world and genuine progression? Like, with dungeon crawling and towns and such to explore. As if it was a genuine RPG? But with cards.

      Anonymous

Not quite as detailed but recently I've like cross blitz quite a bit. Nice to have a non roguelike one; you can customize decks for particular fights, level up for different cards/bonuses etc. Its mostly linear with some branches so maybe not as in depth as you are looking for. Best one was pic related hex tcg that had race/class combos with fairly detailed skill trees and big world. Got sued into the dirt by WotC still a salty b***h but yea cross code is pretty alright; surprisingly rare to get non roguelikes card games.

Is Chrono Ark actually any good? I am assuming that this is probably its last sale before the 1.0 release.
But is the game Korean or Chinese?

I liked it drafting characters throughout a run was a fun twist and there's a lot of them. I haven't played in a long while (waiting on 1.0).

I've never played Slay the Spire with mods. Which are quality enough to be included in the regular game?

I wish Slay the Spire would officially adapt some mods to official status.
I don't really like installing random mods much. With the game had more official content.

      There's this https://store.steampowered.com/app/1865780/ Downfall__A_Slay_the_Spire_Fan_Expansion/
adds quite a bit though maybe not as well balanced as the base game enjoyed it quite a bit

        What? Why? That sucks.
        What's the story here?

          Anonymous

The game was basically magic with cards only possible in digital (this is years before mtg did their alchemy stuff). Ex pic of PvP just playing out a busted combo with a friend; most of my creatures here have equivalent of hex proof and vigilance because of one of the enchantments on the right; there is also lifelink and haste in here etc.. Or more examples on now defunct https://store.steampowered.com/app/410380/HEX_Shards_of_Fate/

The resource system was slightly different and they had some really cool keywords but other wise yea base systems were very much MtG. There were even some basically 1:1 cards like murder or rampant growth. So to be fair probably not unreasonable for them to get sued but still I had 1000+ hours in this before shut down and miss it.

Gordian Quest is like that, but it's still married to the "Slay the Spire" style mission map. You still explore various nodes, but it's not like exploring a town in an RPG. It has that progression you want, and I enjoyed it for that, but the main criticism seems to be that once you decide on a deck for a character, the rest of the game is just improving that deck. There's no reason to make alternate decks, and in fact if you do you're just gimping yourself.

Dark Sky is another game that looks to be the same, only with actual on foot exploring. I haven't played it yet, and I don't really like the graphics, but I'm willing to give the demo a shot eventually.

        >There's no reason to make alternate decks, and in fact if you do you're just gimping yourself.
I hate that, I had 2 and in the process deck being made in yugioh real life. I like card games where I have my main deck but I can make others. I had a pure wizard deck that could summon dark magician with ease I could destroy a dude in 3 turns. My second was a demon deck it still needed fine tuning but it was fun. I've been trying to find some good card games but visually the whole lot look the same anime or super cute the bad kind.

NTA; Steamworld games are always such an odd amalgam of gameplay mechanics. I did like the game though, and not just because the wizard robot was cute. The mana system was really interesting and rewarding you for combining certain types of cards in sequence was nice for providing a reason to not just jam your strongest cards.

      How is it? Unironically.
I've been meaning to try Cultist Simulator. But ever since I missed the 80% sale. I have just kind of postponed it.

But could I just play Book of Horus first, instead? How does it compare?

        Anonymous

I don't know enough adjectives to accurately describe just how bad it is so instead I'll say that it isn't even a game.
There is no losing state. The game doesn't tell you anything. Because there is no losing state, you can't even begin to figure out if you're doing anything wrong because you get no feedback on your inputs.
And I'm not sure if this was improved since launch, but the game also runs like absolute garbage for how it looks. Something so simple should not be struggling to maintain a steady framerate.

Just play Cultist because it's (and I can't emphasis this enough) *a game*.

          Anonymous

Wait. So Book of Hours is like those shitty Flash """""puzzle""""" Flash games that had neither puzzles nor explanations? And just wanted you to brute force cryptic bullshit?
          Frick. That's disappointing.

            Anonymous

Pretty much. Unless you're using a guide (which defeats the purpose of even playing) then it will take a few hours of just bashing random things together before you even get an idea of what to do. A few hours where you don't even know if anything is happening because, again, No Feedback.

Unless you're severely autistic, just spend your time doing something else.

Cultist Simulator is absolute drudgery because AK doesn't want to make fun gameplay. CS can only be salvaged with mods. Betrayer's Map is amazing.

            Anonymous

But CS is a game. By telling you what doesn't work it points you towards how to beat the game. You don't get that in BoH. What happens in that game is that you frick up and unknowingly set yourself back several hours.

just avoid yesod/gebura and use floors you never really used before. Also try out keypages you never really gave a frick about for being subpar. SotC has all kinds of great keypages that get completely overshadowed by PT and the like. Like did you know bayard's pinpoint strike attack is coded as self damage? If you attribute grit to himself he wont self stagger when using his exlusive page and that page fricking nukes enemies from full stagger

I would also recommend using the Ego Synchronization Enhancement mod which makes the sync ego pages actually worth using

Any good no-roguelike games on sale?

      Anonymous

They are unfortunately kind of rare the two I've like are Kamifuda and cross blitz. TLDR is Kamifuda is finished, cheaper + has a demo. Cross blitz is still EA and more expensive but I like it more.

Kamifuda is an alright VN where story is hogwarts but wizard powers come from eldritch powers that you play the card game to better control. Gameplay is broken into lanes with creatures and spells you play out to a board with spells needing to be defended. So as an example you might play a spell that will give you more mana on future turns but it takes awhile to activate and opp can attack your spell to stop it from activating so you want to play it behind a beefy defender. Has decent number of strategies like applying lots of debuffs, flooding the board with little shitters etc.

Cross blitz is still EA but very good. Currently 3/5 factions implemented each with different story/characters / a few style of play each. Gameplay also has board with lanes where play creatures to a board that attack forward hitting opposing creatures or face. There are some really cool archetypes though like pirate faction has cannon archetypes that clog your board with cannons that can't attack on their own but can be triggered in massive combos having them all fire at once. Or rockband faction has archetype that spams low stat groupie minions that can alter what is created like changing them to demons or give them keywords when generated.

Are there any games that are like the old gameboy pokemon tcg? All cards in the game, unlock cards through in-game boosters, a proper campaign with no roguelite elements and an emphasis on single player? Preferibably where you are playing a card game in universe.

I no new games in this style are ever released anymore.

above both pick cards to get rather than packs + only Kamifuda is in world card game but both have reasonable campaigns. Agree with this

Do itch.io games ever go on sale?
Slice & Dice is being promoted pretty heavily on Steam since it's new, appears to be popular, and and has a demo. Even if it isn't on sale.

But I don't think I want the game on Steam.
The page on itch.io has the game for both Windows ans Android. But it's expensive (apparently it used to be cheaper.).
Buying the game on the Google Play store alongside buying the game on Steam appears to be even more expensive than to just buy the package deal on itch.io though.
But the itch.io pack seems pretty nice. Like, it's DRM free too with standalone installers/apks.

But well. After trying the Google Play demo on my phone I don't think I want to ignore the android version. Having an actually non-shit game onmy phone might be kind of cool. But now I don't know what platform to get the game from.

Will the itch.io thing go on sale? Or should I just commit to buying it on another platform?

I won't say One Step From Eden is bad. But laser focusing on MMBN's combat, without doing anything with the adventure game aspect, was such a great and massive disappointment to me.
Speaking of. Shanghai.EXE is legitimately incredible. And that game is MMBN but Touhou. The adventure game part included.

          Anonymous

That's a justified opinion. I personally saw it as being hyperfocused on the combat and then falling prey to early access being filled with people who loved the combat to the point it was overtuned for people who were way too good at that system and not interested in any fluff.

            Anonymous

the thing is it didn't even copy the combat that well. Sure it has the move and shoot part of it but the pre combat set up with your deck building is just as important to the combat. OSFE has some combos but since it's a roguelike you have to take parts of combos and just hope the rest of the combo shows up, and even then by having essentially a hand size of 2 you can't really make that complex of combos.

Gameplay also has board with lanes where play creatures to a board that attack forward hitting opposing creatures or face. There are some really cool archetypes though like pirate faction has cannon archetypes that clog your board with cannons that can't attack on their own but can be triggered in massive combos having them all fire at once. Or rockband faction has archetype that spams low stat groupie minions that can alter what is created like changing them to demons or give them keywords when generated.

above both pick cards to get rather than packs + only Kamifuda is in world card game but both have reasonable campaigns. Agree with this [...] that pso ep3 is very good if up for emulating

anon said kamifuda and crossblitz are good. any yu gi oh video game probably works too.

Not that anon. But I was under the impression that voice of cards, was like 0% card game, in spite of everything having the aesthetic of a card game.

MVP of this sale so far for me. Janky, crappy art, costs next to nothing, more gameplay than most other games in this shit of a sale

I heard the whole base set got a rework and rules update at some point so I assume it's based on that

Yeah... but I'd like to play the old game with the Etrian Artist one more time, before the new one drops with the new art.

Quantum Protocol is a fun singleplayer card game with nice themeing for the decks. It also lets you break the game.
The final boss is tough as hell, it took me over sixteen hours to beat.

How the frick is it possible that not a single deckbuilder has managed to equal or surpass Slay the Spire after this long?

Because they're all explicitly trying to surpass Slay the Spire instead of trying to be good, and that makes them overly fixated on very particular design decisions on both a deckbuilding and a roguelite level that shouldn't be treated as dogma.

This. The Balatro dev specifically said that he avoided playing other deck builders until the very end of the development, and said that if he did he's sure he would have copied the node path map system that StS popularized.

I recall people praising Balatro but after getting to higher difficulties people are hating on it now since the balance is apparently way off compared to StS.

That node path system is so fricking overused and I despise it. I feel like it leads to overplanning and introduces a lot of unnecessary data that bogs down players. The Hades system of just having you react room by room isn't "better" but I think the full map needs to stop being the default.

funny enough Inscryption of all games did it pretty well I think. You have minimal branches on the path and you only see 4 or so nodes ahead so there's some planning but not way too much to think about.

Yeah... but I'd like to play the old game with the Etrian Artist one more time, before the new one drops with the new art.

did they not get him back for the remake? besides I think he only did like 3 of the princesses and that's it. Funny enough 2 of them are greedy merchant israelites. He seems to like that archetype

I need to give that one another shot. I got like two hours in when I played in 2022 and just fell off. I have a bad habit with deckbuilders where whenever I'm in the mood for them I play a few hours and then just go back to Magic before falling out of Magic again. I did three runs total of slay the spire, got to level 50 in two of them, and then never played it again for the same reason.

      >*checks guides in how to deck-build and optimal strategies*
      >*checks wikis in how the get the thing on the events*
      >*checks optimal pathings*
Yup yup yup, Slay the Spire is the GOAT
