Castlevania 64 was received well at release. Not perfect, but it was released well. It was ecelebs like AVGN who started the
      >Castlevania 64 is... LE BAD
which dictated most of the internet's opinion of the games.

Most people never played it and just go off popular consensus. I tried it a few years ago expecting it to be trash and I actually enjoyed every minute of it and finished it. Actually good game with great atmosphere. Camera is not even a problem. However most people will not give it a fair shake and will quit as soon as something goes wrong because lol bad game.

I only did Reinhard. The only control issues I remember is grabbing onto ledges being weird and the fact you cannot move while locked on. I remember having to constantly hop and attack. The sword is a godsend.

Stage-wise, castle center is easily the worst. Clock tower was the best. Final boss goes down way too fast if you have max whip.

The game is decent. I really wish they built upon it. It's the only one (haven't done Legacy) that truly felt like a 3d Castlevania.

It was the best 3D CV in terms of level design and you actually get to fricking kill vampires who can infect you with vampirism. Cool day/night cycle on LoD, different character scenarios. If the camera and controls weren’t ass (because Jap devs are more concerned with shit cameras than to make them usable for the player) it would’ve been so much better.

      Anonymous

all they had to do to fix the camera was make a button that centers it, target lock only centers it if you're standing still

The platforming needed some desperate camera control. Other than that, its what Lament of Innocence and Curse of Darkness could’ve taken inspiration from.

LoD put camera control on the D-pad. It's pretty useless on original hardware, but on an emulator with the D-pad mapped to the right stick it works pretty well.

It was too hard for me as an early teenager and I SotN set the bar way too high. Looking back it's probably an okay game, but not nearly on the same level as SotN. Of course we know today that almost nothing is on the level of SotN, but that's hindsight.

I'm glad this game's reputation is being rehabilitated. When I played it back in the day, I thought it was amazing and everyone else I knew who had an N64 liked it as well. We live in a world that's big enough where you can like both Castlevania 64 and Symphony of the Night.

THIS, i grew up thinking that the 64 Castlevanias as well as Mega man 64 (or legends series in general) were bad games because of camera controls.

The boomers in gaming magazines who couldnt get over Megaman 2 or Castlevania 3 always took opportunity to shit these games, i mean those games are great but this 3D ones were step in the right direction, Super Mario 64 had also flaws and change the gameplay from the 2D games to be able to be on 3D yet probably Nintendo payed so everyone wanted it.

64 magazines always hyped up everything as the second coming regardless of quality. I remember all the hype about Megaman 64 but none of them ever mentioned it was a port of a ps1 game from like 1997 that nobody played.

I never would have known about the sequel/s though so in a roundabout way Capcom's plan worked.

            Anonymous

The magazine i read as a kid did hype it up but only because Mega man was finally arriving to the console and the reviewers loved Mega man.

But once it arrived they hated it because they named 64 like it was a new game, because it was a 4 year old port and they didnt fixed the dpad for controls, also for the time the console already had games like Majora's mask, perfect dark, Banjo tooie or DK64 that had fixed camera controls issues.

They never did more promotion for it not guides or tricks bugs, also because the Gamecube was months away and the N64 was a dying console.

They aren't even actual influencers, they are just some homie making an overly long video on some old game and then it changes how everyone on the internet views the game. People just flock to others opinions because they are too stupid to come up with their own. It's why so many people see a review of a game and instead of judging if they think it will be worth their time, they just blindly listen to whoever is speaking and then parrot those thoughts.

    >why do people hate it?
They didn't. The PS2 ones are way more controversial.
It's perfectly fine. Like a lot of 3D 5th gen games the biggest issues are just performance and fighting the camera. But that was every second fricking game.

      Anonymous

For a lot of 5th gen games you just have to accept the growing pains into the third dimension and adapt to it. To people newer to video games I can understand why they'd be unwilling to adapt to these older games. Personally I don't mind, there is plenty of fun to be found in 5th gen games.

As long as you know what you're getting into and are willing to compromise on today's expectations for snappy camera movement, nothing should grind on your nerves too much and yeah, plenty of fun and neat ideas that you just don't see around anymore.
Just a matter of expectations management.

The game has the best intro menu of any Castlevania game and has some actual nice designs, but overall it's shit and shows that the creators had no clear vision other than attempt to make in 3d, they failed miserably and their failure has lead to us living in a world where Castlevania has never been accurately translated into 3d.
