Frick man, this shit got to me. Same game where you see a man find his wife and infant son dead from poisoning. Yes it’s my first time playing FF6, and it makes aeris’ death look cheerful by comparison.

Zenos is an adrenaline junkie who happened to be born into the position of crown prince of the evil empire. He doesn’t even give a shit about said empire, all he does is for the purpose of getting his next fight, and for a lot of people that seems to be enough for them to go ”humm, what a great and compelling villain and rival to my MC”.

They did counteract that a bit by saying he was a good boy before magicite experiments destroyed his brain.

The funny thing is that there's a damn good argument that the only reason you could beat him at the end was BECAUSE he was insane & self-destructively stupid. There's no reasonable explanation for how he could possibly lose after what he gained and had a year to master, while you're piddlydicking around at the last second, gathering a few chunks of magicite and some magical equipment from a war that time forgot.
The only conclusion is that he didn't fix his brain in all that time.

from what i've read the games just poorly put together at times. Like the terra shit, supposedly being the main character but constantly leaves the party and game can be completed without her, to have her teleport into the ending, and forcing flashbacks because they handle parts of her arc poorly.

                Anonymous

I wouldn't say that's handled poorly, it simply leaves a lot to the imagination; hands off design. Something that comes to mind is Owzer, who goes from a regular looking dude to a fat freak in WoR with zero explanation, He's a minor, semi irrelevant NPC, so he doesn't really need one. It adds a level of mystique.

                Anonymous

if your main character has to be teleported into the end when not in the party, because not only do you allow for them to not be recruited but to also leave the party, but have no event for such a thing happening, cause that'd be moronic to happen, its handled poorly. And its not hands-off design its poor design.

The main character shouldn't have to explain what they were doing off-screen, it should be the reverse where the rest of the party explains what THEY did off-screen and the character saving comes in a flashback whereas the flashbacks for terra would be real-time because she's the main character of the game. The game didn't know what it wanted to do and the game suffered as a result. Even kefka being beaten doesn't really make sense as he's functionally unstoppable at that point, but they don't want it to just end like that so he rolls over and takes it.

Debatable isn't it? He would have to be sane enough to WANT to fix his brain, to even perceive that something is wrong before being able to want to fix it. That's the problem with an altered perception you don't miss what you don't have.

That's fluff information. It's alluding to him being possessed by spirits, which is why he dresses as a clown, and was gifted the title of court jester, which apparently meant a lot to Gestahl.

I mistook the exact title. Kefka is the official court mage in Gestahl's government and that's said pretty early in the game, I think the first time he's talk about actually. The rest is implied off of that based on my notes
            >To start on Kefka, he is Emperor Gestahls right hand. He is officially the court mage. He also resembles a clown, so in a way he also occupies the role of jester in the imperial court dynamic. By also being a clown, he links himself to the Emperor of II, who also exuded a clown like visage

you dropped the game right before a point that was so bad they had to patch in two things:
                1. An option to skip chapter 13 by playing a shorter optional version
                2. Made the gimmick weapon you had to use for like 90% of the dungeon not suck

the problem with 15 is that they kept on adding shit that felt unnecessary.

Like if they stopped at the Royal Edition/PC port, it would be fine and I would of given it a second shot but they decided MORE DLC after the season pass.

3/4ths of the planned content, including a new ending, got turned into a novel.
The last bit that got released as DLC ruined so much of the story of FF15 it turned the ending from "the heroes win, at a price" to "everyone is fricked because the real main badguy played everyone like a damn fiddle"

          Basically what you said +what

You want the long story? The short story is, FFX got caught up in Sony's meddling and a long-time rival of Sakaguchi was finally able to outst him to start whoring out the brand.

          said.
Sakaguchi lost most of his authority within the company after The Spirits Within failed. And before he left he also cultivated a company view that Final Fantasy was its surface stylistic elements and that it was foremost meant to be a ground to experiment with those stylistic aspects as a cover (see again the spirits within).
His leaving also split the FF team into the FF7 compilation side and the FF Tactics Side. And while there was no ill will between these two groups despite what people say but now you have a company divided in terms of goals.
Then 13 killed the cultural momentum the series had and killed and youth market interest in the brand meaning its struggled to retain new fans.
Then when Square came up on the HD era they took an entire extra console generation behind the rest of the Japanese market to properly reorient around the greater manpower and resources necessary to develop HD games leading to the late 2000s and most of the 2010s being a shitshow of internal issues.
Then you need to take into account that a lowball estimate of having a game be successful in Square's eyes is if it can make more than Square would of made just investing its budget into the stock market.

Basically after Sakaguchi was ousted the Square side of the company was a rudderless mess that kept making bad decisions and only just recently looks to be starting to get its shit together.

I'm an old enough oldgay to play all of these in my youth, and it was pretty incredible for these games to have such depth of character and story at a timewhen most believed games to be little more than simple Mario-esq stories or other things made for young/teenage boys.

I always loved FF6 as one of the greatest classic JRPGs, and Locke / Celes were some of my favorites and a great romantic pairing. Though I admit that to this day FF4' relationship between Cecil and Rosa is incredibly unique in they were basically together before the game started in a functional, mature relationship and the events of the game only strengthened them. Really fricking unusual in any media, but especially games.

The thing about Relm is that she's very rude in the original version, but in a way that doesn't translate well outside of Japan. She's just like "ossan" but you see by how all the characters react visually that she's basically dropping an F bomb in every sentence.

My only real criticism of this game is:

Individual character skills start to not matter in WOR. The game gears your characters towards being magic spammers in WOR.

Relationships outside of the core characters - Terra Locke Edgar Sabin Celes Cyan, are not explored in much detail

      Anonymous

The relationships between characters I~V are all pretty shallow, barring the Cecil, Kain, Rosa love triangle in IV. Even the romance between Locke and Celes is only a couple small scenes, and it's written like parody since Celes is literally Locke's backup, along with the background context that Locke was hitting on Terra earlier in the game before Celes appears in the story. I guess in terms of subtext, there is a lot going on that isn't mentioned outright in VI.

        Anonymous

IV was the first one with real characters and overall a tighter narrative than FF6. Unfortunately, FF4's translation in the North American SNES release leaves a lot to be desired, and a result there's scenes that are lot less impactful than they should be.

    >watch him slowly limp to local water source and poison it

There is something strange that happened off-screen with Kefka between him getting slapped around by Sabin and Shadow at Dona, to him killing Leo with ease, along with all the other stuff he does right before the Floating Continent
Also I found this in my notes too. Not sure if anyone ever made this connection.
      >In II, the Emperor poisoned the water supply of the Dragoons of Diest, Kefka does the same to the people of Dona.

In the Magitek Research Facility, Kefka drains power from the espers, oblivious to magicite. Only when the party turns the surviving espers there into magicite does Cid and Kefka know what magicite even is. If you consider the detail that when this happens there are no longer any espers available to the empire at this point, Kefka would have been unable to absorb magicite until that scene in Thamasa. So the only span of time he could absorb esper power was in the time span between Dona and when the party infiltrated Vector, and even then it was a lower form of energy from magicite.

This is not the response you were looking for but it depends on what shortcomings you want to put up with. I would say for the completely uninitiated, find a GBA rom and get the patches that fix the color and the sound. If you're a /vr/ retro gamer you will probably enjoy the original SNES Woolsey translation warts and all. That version has bugfix patches as well if you prefer to play that way

There are some mods/romhacks for the SNES version that uncensor and even add other content, like Brave New World.

Aside from that, I'd say look to the PC version (the one from before the pixel remaster) or perhaps the pixel remaster on PC, and then look for mods for it. For instance Project Atmaweapon overhauled graphics, sound and tons of other feature.

How do stories age? FF6's gameplay isn't that much different than other FF games.

          >How do [videogame] stories age?
ff6's story is more interesting but it falls apart the more you dive into it. when it released it was ahead of the curve with videogame writing. it was a prototype for things to come, and everything else did it better.
ff5's is more simple but it becomes more entertaining the more you dive into it. when it released it was more simple and campy compared to what came before it. its unrelenting campyness and cohesive plot is what made it age well becauce thats uncommon today
          >FF6's gameplay isn't that much different than other FF games
it had good ideas but the balance of player power and monster power made it so most builds were lacking weight. very hard to get a sense of skill expression when everything is easy. it needed more time to cook. ff7 and ff8 had similar problems. ff5 did not have this issue

I was disappointed when I played VI, but that's probably because the game had been praised to high heavens for decades.
Ended up enjoying V way more.
That said, still in my top 5.
