Censorship in Videogames

What do we think about censhorship in videogames localization?
>example
Fire Emblem Engage localization censored a lot of romance options.

Pretty much. Arguing for fricking weeks on end just because they keep dancing around the fact that stuff has been censored, and for some reason they're afraid to just say "It's censored and I'm glad they censored it"

Seriously, if they were just capable of being honest right off the bat about their real stance the threads would be less headache inducing with the 2000+ posts of purely semantic bullshit.

They'll never do it, because half of them are millennials that grew up during the 90s censorship craze, hated it, championed against then, then lived long enough to become the villain themselves.

This kind of thing happens because the Japanese creators have no idea it's happening.
Like they literally have no clue. It's sent overseas and they just assume it will get translated for the west.

Find a way to get their attention and they'll pull authority to try and reverse the damage.

It's weird, considering years ago Ganker would never defend censorship

I think sometimes they do try to appease overseas markets, but yea a lot of times localizers are proud about how much contempt they have for the material they're working on and they'll do whatever they can to frick with it. You'll even see them bragging about this on Twitter, which is ridiculously unprofessional.

I have to maintain that they actually have NO IDEA.
Check out the two examples I gave:
        >FF14
Localization team censored an entire character by removing his dialogue and editing the cutscenes with him in it. He was a very flamboyant character and the devs were proud of his character introduction in the cutscenes, which were all uniquely animated for his persona. Nips only found out about it after excessive fan complaint was directed at them overseas, upon which the head dev himself stepped in, made them issue a public apology, and restructured how the translations are done. Nothing like that has ever happened again.

        >the manga
Actual troony rewrote the entire story so that instead of a boy's gay friend dressing up his other gay friend as a girl, the boy being dolled up was instead transitioning. As this was the actual official translation, fans went around Seven Seas and went straight to the creator, who then made Seven Seas issue an apology, fire the translator, and start re-working it from the beginning.

RCG Zero came out with a option to play the game with Direct Translation or Localization script.
Majority of players preferred the Directly translated script.
While at the same time a select few individuals were angry at the idea that the game had two separate English translations.
These individuals were immediately found out to be Western Localizers.
Showing that nobody likes your "editorializing" over the actual Script.
May have passed back in the 90s and early 2000s. But people have access to the internet and are more aware of Japan and it's quirks than ever before. So nobody that matters to the sales of a game would be put off or be confused by Japanese idioms, proverbs, and jokes.

If you create a game for English audience, then you decide that you want your work translated to 32 more languages because you want it as accessible as possible even to the most moronic gorilla baboon who can't understand your language. Let's say that one of that language is... Mongolian.

Would you care if the Mongolian translation is butchered and unfaithful? frick no. to you, Mongolian language is "just 1 out of 32 random language options". you don't give a shit about it because... it means nothing to you. it doesn't affect you.

This was the reason of the censorship of the old days. Japan don't care, don't understand and don't give a shit about English language translation. So they just gave their product to a publisher and then whatever.... Some people might be fine about it because THE SOURCE PRODUCT is left as it is. the problem is entirely in the translation, not product.

What's happening right now is completely different. English version of the game now has too much leverage and bargaining power due to massive revenue that it's brought to the company. And people are now realizing and starting to care about their (English) version of the game is DIFFERENT from the source product. That's why, the all-powerful English teams are now demanding and extorting the creator that the original must be altered to SUIT their (English market, according to English teams) sensibilities, to make sure that EVERY VERSION IS THE SAME, which is...the English version, which caters to English market.

Japanese games are no longer Japanese. Japanese devs no longer have power. The're nothing but slaves and lapdogs of their... English subsidiaries, because "the English teams bring more revenue and THEY KNOW BETTER than us who don't know a lick of English language... so we trust them".

It doens't help that to the Jap Devs' eyes, the "English consumer base" also seem to be in agreement with their English teams, because they'd look at Twitter and Reddit as the sample.

This is why I don't play anything designed for the EOP audience. The only modern games I play are ones that are unashamedly Japanese, made purely for the Japanese market.

In general, dishonestly in fiction is exhausting. People relating fiction too closely to real life is exhausting. For frick's sake Americans base their identities off of cartoon characters and superheroes.

      Anonymous

Generally speaking people don't base their identities off of degenerate superheroes. The only thing being censored in the majority of these games is degeneracy that has no thematic purpose.
      >People relate fiction too closely to real life
Hard to blame them considering real life is the framework for fiction. It's actually more believable fiction if it ties closer to realism in regards to logic, not necessarily in the ideas that utilize the logic. Take something like Mass Effect, or Star Trek. Why do most of the alien races feel so natural? Because they conform to a logic we, the audience, can relate to. The ones that don't feel strange, but the writing explains the fiction's own logic and you can begin to understand the alien('s) perspective.
If a creator/artist (e.g. Every Intelligent Systems' production) puts absolutely no effort into making their fiction believable OR relatable, all that's left is the truth of why the censored material exists; bait for addictive, degenerate behavior that should be discouraged. You can argue why it should not be discouraged, but the reality (albeit teetering) is that it is. Instead the only argument seems to always be that "censorship defeats the original artistic vision", but there is no effort to even pretend to be art. The transparency is embarrassing at this point.
Case in point: Why do "artists" like IS/Nintendo never fight localizations or refuse to release games whose artistic visions have been skewered?

But they don't feel natural, they feel fricking boring. Both of those works are shit because of how they pander to muh relatable blue humans in design instead of making things that are actually alien. It's no coincidence that the most interesting races in Mass Effect are the Geth and Hanar.
        >Why do "artists" like IS/Nintendo never fight localizations or refuse to release games whose artistic visions have been skewered?
Completely disingenuous question, the "artists" at IS are not the people working on the other side of the planet at Nintendo of America who are the ones censoring the artists' work. And IS being a subsidiary of Nintendo means they have absolutely no choice in the matter, unlike say, Falcom who could threaten to give future game localisations to a different company over the shitshow that was NISA's handling of Ys 8.

          >But they don't feel natural, they feel fricking boring
No argument there. Look outside your window. Humans are fricking boring when the outside perspective is specifically looking for something abstract.
          >It's no coincidence that the most interesting races in Mass Effect are the Geth and Hanar
You're right, and this was explained
          >>the writing explains the fiction's own logic
In other words, the writers put effort into creating the abstract, so when you specifically look for something otherwordly you can find it, as well as having your own perspective (human/real life) to contrast it. Why do you think the Kirk/Spock relationship is so timeless? It's quite literally the best of both worlds.
          >the "artists" at IS are not the people working on the other side of the planet at Nintendo of America who are the ones censoring the artists' work
Yes, I'm aware of that. Yet the intrepid creators continue to accept their paycheck, having less respect for their works than many anons on this forum. They DO have a choice, and they've made it consistently, if not supported it as well as being supported by it.

    >The ones who do the censorship tend to be men.
    Fricking funny how that works.

It doesn't matter. They still alter the actual game, as well as public perception.

Fire Emblem Fates cut entire gameplay systems, yes. So did Mugen Souls.

      Yes
      >NISA
      >Treehouse
      >Marvelous
I know there's more but these three come to mind right away for censoring interactivity instead of just visuals.

I think there were occasional instances in the past, 4th and 5th gen mainly, where excessive TnA and panty shots would clash with a good character design. blaze in streets of rage 2 comes to mind with those bright white panties in every jump animation.

How pointless and miserable your life must be if that's your only concern on a Sunday morning...
