So I guess the sequel isn't worth playing then?
I'm playing the first game for the first time now and it's pretty fun.

If you wanna give it a shot I won't blame you. Just go in expecting a worse story.
On a personal note I really dislike some of the level layouts because it felt too simple at times. I think it may have to do with having two different playable characters with separate power sets, forcing the design to be more accessible.

To answer this post, something that irked me is how D2 pretends Sokolov taught Emily during D1 when he was at the Hound Pits pub which is a straight up retcon. At no point before Havelock attacks the place does Sokolov leave his jail, yet D2 tries to force this narrative where Sokolov was a "nice grandpa" all along and totally not someone that treated people as guinea pigs during the plague. It whitewashes him hard.

I never ever understood why they tried to paint Sokolov as a good guy. They maybe mention his inhumane experiments once and then keep on pretending he's a good guy.

Unforgivable, I always liked his more mysterious watcher persona in 1 and how it was hinted he was some sort of manifestation of the whales collective consciousness in the void. That and him not really having any bad intentions but more seeking to test the morality of people in hard situations, to see if those who suffered would always be corrupted by their suffering and shows appreciative surprise if you actually spare people.

I still have hope because all the dumb shit that happens is tied to D2, retcon that and it’s pretty much back to business as usual. And considering that Arkane is on its last legs the series may be up for grabs soon.

They actually doubled down on it in deathloop, which is apparently set post DotO, so it looks like they're going to keep hammering nails into its coffin until its dead.

That’s the brilliant part about it, it still comes after D2, a simple retcon and all of it D2, DoTO, and DL all gone and made irrelevant. And I honestly doubt that Arkane has anything left after Red Fall failed so spectacularly. They might try D3 in desperation but given everything that’s happened I doubt that will do well.

Red Fall can at least be said to not really be theirs, just made by some company that bethesda slapped the Arkane name onto. Presumably they don't have a shared budget, not that it matters when nuarkane are just as dedicated to sinking themselves.

I doubt any studio that would swoop up Dishonored's IP would just retcon everything after the first game. That never happens. Especially for games that were destroyed by woke shit in their sequels.

Anything is possible, especially when it comes to IP’s that are up for grabs. Though considering Microsoft owns all that shit now I doubt it will go to anyone competent. This scenario is just a possibility, a simple fix for an issue that pretty much anyone with half a brain can see.

I always fricking adored how it felt like Corvo broke the mold from the people he used to watch over. Like he got bored from Daud because he got monotonous in his killings but Corvo was a wild card like the Courier in New Vegas, someone that kept his morality and fought for Emily through thick and thin. The Outsider was at his best in the Shrines you found in D1 and he commented on the ongoing level and was always surprised when Corvo chose mercy. Man did they ruin him and the universe in the process,

I loved the Outsider in D1 and would listen to him refleting on your choices every time.
In D2 I seriously couldn't stand the direction they went for. On my first playthrough I was beginning to skip his dialog; what he said was predictable as much as D1, maybe, but his delivery was far far worse to sit through.

Billy Lush AKA TrannDestroyer's nice calm voice just worked for me, he managed to pull off the disinterested tone of a being who's lived and seen it all. You wouldn't think that would be hard to pull off, but his replacement botched it completely and just sounded like a big whiny edgelord.

Different director aswell. D1 had Raphael Colantonio as co-director. D2 and Death of Outsider were directed by Harvey Smith.
I tried Raphael's Prey and it was pretty good. He obviously carried D1.

I genuinely wonder if killing off the Outsider was a complete kneejerk reaction that could've been avoided by just fricking recasting him, or if they actually planned any of that shit

                Anonymous

They did recast him, D2 had a different voice actor entirely, and you can really tell unfortunately. DotO and to a large extent D2 as well seemed to just be made by people who didn't understand that the outsider wasn't meant to be the focal point of the game, but more an interested outside observer who just likes to see how people act in different situations who wasn't meant to ever really be explained.

                Anonymous

Expanding on The Outsider's backstory was so detrimental to the atmosphere, it can't be overstated enough
In DH1, The Outsider was pretty much a bored god dicking around with mortals giving them powers and seeing what would happen, not taking sides or doing much influence past that (other than commenting on what happens). That was such an amazing concept for him, it not only just made the world feel more interesting because who knows who else The Outsider decided to just give powers to, but also it makes the moral context more interesting - you're given the powers, but not for a specific purpose, so you can use them as you wish. This was the perfection of his character and how it was taken in 2 was awful, and even the notion that he can die at all is ridiculous

They just seemed to bin the whole link to pandyssia as well, which was implied to be linked to the outsider in some weird way. That whole aspect doesn't even really make sense if he's just some dude rather than some genuinely age old god like being.

Between the salon prodigies Piero was a much more compelling character than Sokolov. Sokolov is presented as curmudgeonly but endlessly correct in everything he does. Many of Piero's designs and premises in the original game are flawed and simply do not work. That kind of conflict could've set a great story.
I imagine a sequel that increasingly has Piero's breakthroughs bring the Outsider to public awareness. At some critical moment that "drawing out" and harnessing goes wrong and shit hits the fan as a direct result of Piero's increasing ego and wieneriness. I guess we'll never know or I'll fork the end of the original and tell that story with my friends through the tabletop game.

Not sure about levels though. It's good that thay're now more complex but at the same time they're often way too big and way too open which especially annoying when it's ome big yard or a sqaure and there're no paths to skip the open part that is flooded with patrols.

I thought emily's powers were fun, and I kind of liked the idea of having lead up hub areas, but that was about it. The levels were either heavily gimmick focused like the clockwork mansion of time travel level or just plain bland like the hospital and museum, with nothing that stood out like the ones in D1.

She criticized DEI hiring by companies just filling diversity quotas, saying it's important they bring something to the table like a different perspective otherwise it's pointless.
She said HR sucks and just sweeps inconveniences under the table instead of addressing the issue. Basically what Blizzard did.
She even said Trump might get reelected because the left is too moronic to deal with him. She did not endorse him, she hates him but that's a very self aware observation that'd make lefties seethe.
Gaming wise, she took issue with the more ridiculous stuff like bra armor and borderline prostitute outfits, not attractive fictional women in general. She also had a problem with dudebros on xbox yelling Black person and lobbies going apeshit when a girl used a mic. I obviously disagree with her because she wanted to instill her values on our hobby and entered men's space but nothing she said is insane by today's standards and I can empathize because popular media of that time did use to stereotypes men as big muscle warrior and women as sex trophy.

Didn't they plan to kill him, or frick him up because of VA issues?
I remember seeing some article saying they either replaced the original VA, or were doing something with the character because it was uncovered the original VA had an Xbox Live account called "troonyDestroyer", or some shit like that, YEARS ago because the area he lived in had a lot of transexuals.
Is this real or did I have a fever dream?

      Anonymous

His original VA voiced the first Dishonored 2 trailer

      ?t=23
After that they never called him back to voice the game, but iirc it was long before he made the reddit AMA where it was revealed his reddit nickname was "troonydestroyer". If you believe what he said he put that name because one of his irl friends was a transexual and he used to BTFO him in jokes and stuff. It sounds like cope but judging by the rest of that reddit's AMA answers, he honestly came across like a normal dude that didn't even know he had made a controversial thing. Like someone completely disconnected from internet drama. I'd be willing to say on principle that he might've been replaced because Harvey and co. knew they wanted to tell the Outsider's backstory and the new VA sold the "innocent dindu street kid" idea better but, well, I dislike Harvey and what he did to D2 so you judge for yoursel

It’s fricked how they didn’t try to do a plot where an overseer speaks out against the corruption and calls for reform and is branded as a heretic and left for dead. He could have been visited by the Outsider and can decide to use his heretical abilities to stamp out corruption, or go all in on his new identity and become a terror. Your base can even be a small temple where you’re looked after by some of the faithful and it can play a similar role as the Hound Pits in 1.

It's implied delilah uses magic or some shit to trick everyone into thinking she was always the empress, only the overseers seemed to not be affected by it since they tried to kick her out of dunwall tower.
A dumb plot point honestly, delilah was fine as a minor DLC villain, I have no idea why they had to make her into the big bad she didn't fit the mold at all.

I find it so weird how Corvo and the others weren’t on high alert the whole time. You would expect the special guard to actually be able to do shit. Hell if he’s not going to share his powers at least keep some of those overseer music boxes in the throne rooms.

Corvo had no reason to suspect other supernatural assassins. He and Emily got comfy on the throne. After Daud, he thought it would just be a simple life as the Empress' bodyguard, never having to go 'all out' and beg his master's forgiveness.
And it would've been, if Delilah wasn't brought back because lmao everything Daud did didn't matter

I mean aside from the Crown Killer who was blatantly trying to copy him and make it seem like there was shit going on. And just because you don’t think shit is going down doesn’t mean you shouldn’t make precautions. One empress was already killed because of magic bullshit not having some counter measures just seems out of dumb. Especially since there is a guy that just arbitrarily hands out powers for shits and giggles.

You can't live the rest of your life in fear, but yeah sure the Crown Killer throws a loop in my expectation of Corvo's expectations. I think she's a shit character, personally, and forgot about her.
The last thing Corvo would want to be is to be on edge every hour of every day after going through what he did. Sometimes you have to let your guard down and hope you don't get shit on. Doesn't help that he would be ostracised by his own kingdom's people for being a confirmed warlock.

              >You can't live the rest of your life in fear
That’s not living in fear, that’s setting up counter measures in case shit goes down. And considering the events of the first game it’s a very real possibility. Corvo’s job as Lord Protector is to be aware of threats before they can arise and frick shit up. And he was so good at it that they literally had to send him away before the events of the first game hatch up a plan. The fact that Corvo didn’t think something was seriously up with someone copying him and trying to frame him is a serious frick up for his character.

Corvo is very much mortal, he has powers but he can still be killed or die. And he’s not doing it for himself but for Emily, his Empress and Daughter that’s both responsibility for keeping the realm out of chaos and protecting his family.

That said, he never abandons Emily's side like he did the Empress. If any Outsider infused assassin wanted a go at her, with the infamously powerful defender Corvo at her side, they'd have to go through him.
By this point, from Corvo's understanding, he is the most experienced void walker alive, and bested the best assassin Dunwall ever had in combat. No way he could expect deus ex machina Delilah coming back from the dead to instant highlight & delete him

                >By this point, from Corvo's understanding, he is the most experienced void walker alive, and bested the best assassin Dunwall ever had in combat
This is the kind of thinking that leads to people getting btfo, there is always a bigger fish. Having precautions is something that is necessary. If Corvo gets depowered he’s still one of the top fighters in the empire, if Delilah does she’s just some vitriolic painter with parental issues.

You ignored that Corvo was justified in any arrogance because Delilah ended up just being overpowered for plot reasons
If you hold a nuke in your armament you can't go every day fearing the zulu warriors at your toenails
And yes, Corvo did abandon her, but not at his own request. He followed her orders. Never again.

                Anonymous

That still doesn’t excuse him not having precautions. The outsider could give anyone powers at anytime and he is aware of that. Being prepared for it by having something that could nullify them would make sense and is something that Corvo would have done.
                >Corvo did abandon her, but not at his own request
If she asked him to go then it’s not abandoning her.

He abandoned her, but it's not his fault, nor is it the Empresses'. Like I said, he knows better than to make the same mistake twice.
Corvo isn't Daud, augmenting royal troopers with his powers doesn't fit with him, and his own top guard was bribed and persuaded by Delilah because again, Deus Ex Machina powers > btfo Corvo, because we need badly written rehash of the Brigmore Witches
There was zero reason for Corvo to be tense and on guard every time. It is poor writing for his own Dunwall bureaucracy to allow some death automatons to accompany the Duke and an unknown witch to the throne room, and I don't blame Corvo for this. I blame the writers.
                That's my point.

Why? There is not moral or logical reasoning since he chooses who gets the powers. And Ramsey was just with the regular guard and not one of Corvo’s elites. And that still doesn’t cover why he couldn’t just put some music boxes in the throne room.

Every voidwalkers powers are personalized. They don't just inherit the powers of others. Even Granny Rags has powers we are unaware of.
Music boxes would also frick HIM up. That's adding an element out of his own control, especially considering slaughter-automatons were approved to walk into his own throne room by his guards.

And I'd like to add, music boxes actually hurt Corvo. You can't defend an Empress while you're being actively hurt every second. If I'm not wrong, they even kill you if you don't take out the music box fast enough.

I had an issue pointing out how you expect Corvo should build a 24/7 anti-outsider defense network, when by all realistic accounts he already has, except they rehashed a plot from their last game's DLC and brought back an OP antagonist who just waves her hand and now he's stone. It was ordained by writers for Corvo to be inept, not himself or his own expectations.

It doesn’t kill immediately and has a limited range, and Corvo has ranged weaponry. Just put someone with the powers in range and shoot them, it’s that easy.

An assassin would have ranged weaponry too. And they'd be more accurate without a music box obscuring their senses and causing them terrible life-ending pain.
Corvo had precautions. The only reason they don't work is because le writers want to re-use Corvo and Emily and Delilah. You're defending it like Corvo had reason to worry.

                >I don’t remember seeing any music boxes or powered guards in the throne room (you haven’t explained why he wouldn’t do that).

Corvo doesn't need music boxes to defend Emily. He cannot extend his power to other guards like Daud can. That's my point.
The only point of contention, that *I* brought up and YOU didn't, is that it was moronic for Corvo's guards to allow automatons and Delilah into the courtroom with this Duke. Which YOU defended.
That's where the shitty writing comes into play, and it falls not on Corvo's direct fault, but his indirect fault, because the writers left it up to his bribed guards to allow them in or not.

OK so specially powered Delilah (or random Void assassin) just blinks into the Throne Room, and such a concept is not lost to Corvo. Now she and Corvo have full powers anyway and the music box in the hall was pointless. What was the point?
                >They’re not since they wouldn’t be used unless there was a powered assassin.
So Corvo just knows when an assassin attacking Emily is mortal or not? Deploy the musicboxes, boys! I got a feeling a mortal assassin is coming for my girl!
                >Again why? Just saying he cant doesn’t justify or explain it.
Like I said, and you ignored, the Outsider's powers are not all-encompassing. Daud has unique powers. Granny Rags has unique powers. Corvo has unique powers. Emily has unique powers. Not every one can just extend their powers to inferiors like Daud can.
Nothing you said here or there matters because you deflect the original points in the first place. Corvo can not be a perfect defender, and people have to let their guard down after years of peace. He's an old man now and seems convinced he's the most experienced voidwalker alive and there's no reason for the Outsider to augment an anti-Corvo powered assassin after his daughter. Unfortunately, Delilah is grandfather'd in because Harvey Smith, and is OP enough to just turn him to stone becuz lul the writers are ass. You need to deal with this reality.

The blast drains HP, the normal music doesn’t harm you and just negates powers.

Forgot that part, didn't play in a while. And anyway, even assuming Corvo did become an incompetent frick, such measures would've 100% been preinstalled in the royal palace of all places, going by how every important place was guarded during events of D1

                Anonymous

Basically it’s not there because the plot needed to happen, just like how all of the guards are useless and why a guy who is so good at his job that he had to be sent away is now incompetent and blind to extremely suspicious happenings. Like if Corvo took down the Crown Killer or investigated her like he would have normally he would have found a trail leading right to Delilah and the Duke.

Delilah returning in the first place is fricking moronic. And if she could just fricking petrify anyone in one fingersnap, why the frick did she plot to snatch Emily's body or something in the first game to begin with? These writers are beyond moronic, didn't even spend a minute thinking about all the contradictions their shit creates.

It’s most likely someone had a thing for her and they needed a villain but had to add in some tragic bullshit because without it she would just be another power hungry moron. It’s even more blatant because the alternative to killing her is putting her in her own perfect world where everyone loves her and she is the best. When Burrows was outed and most likely executed, and Campbell gets branded and becomes a weeper.

                Anonymous

Only blast does that but the regular music just negates powers, but considering that Delilah is just a normal person while Corvo is one of the best fighters in the empire he’s going to be fine.

In reality you know you’re wrong and all you bullshit has failed so now you’re just trying to trivialize my argument to cope.
    >just make me repeat myself to the point where you'd say "repeating the same shit over and over??!?!"
You’re the only one doing this because you can’t answer basic questions about statements you made and then start using logical fallacies when this is pointed out. Now run off and be a homosexual somewhere else.

You already tried running away before but you keep coming back because your ego won’t let you leave. So far you’ve failed to explain basic shit and when that failed you resorted to logical fallacies to cope, and when that failed you attempted to trivialize what I said before running away like a b***h. But you can’t handle not getting the last word so you came back just to cry about how stupid it is and how it doesn’t matter despite spending over a two hour arguing. Like I said go be a homosexual somewhere else.

This game made me so fricking mad. There is 0 indication before it that the Outside can die, hes painted as the true god of this world, and implies its not his first incarnation.

Witch each new entry writing around him made less sense, you cant have an all powerful eldrich being that gets bend over by random nobodies.
But having him die in a fricking DLC game? And at a hands of probably the worst character in the game? Billie is a mass murderer but we should feel sympathy for since, we just should ok, like where the frick her powers even come from? Its like having someone stab the sun ... and put it out. Billy was gifted powers same as everyone else. Before that, Daud lent her some of his ability (which Corvo cannot do, as I’ll remind one homosexual in this thread)
Playing as her pre-powers with the augmented arm crossbow was genuinely kino. Her powers in DOTO were kino. But th rest of the writing was pretty terribly ass.

I legit have zero clue. Emily was like what, seven when Corvo saved her? In all that time from then to adulthood she never seemingly gained any powerful allies or did politicking well despite literally growing up around it.
I'm sure she would've had some mentors past Corvo but the game makes it feel like shes absolutely alone and that nobody gives a frick.

It’s called an idiot plot, a plot that only occurs if all the key players are idiots. They act out of character or moronic given their role or position and there are so many contradictions and holes that everything falls apart at the seam the second people notice. Realistically they were too moronic to make a protagonist, antagonist, or story so they just reused characters and plot points from the previous game and tweaked them a bit.
