Kubo just does whatever seems cool to him in the moment. Sometimes that turns out amazing, particularly in art, such as the various cover costumes and hollow creature design. More often it leaves holes in things, like the Vizard which just fall apart or the LN exclusive Bankai.

          Still better than Bleach.

I'm 100% certain that the biggest reason for the shit pacing and writing in Bleach was the editor/publisher interference switching arcs and story beats around. Tatsuki and the others being underdeveloped only for the SS arc to begin immediately after they get their powers reeks of it but things like Shinji being on the cover of the first volume makes me think that the arrancar intro plotline and vizard shit was supposed to happen earlier and get a lot more build up somehow.

            Anonymous

I sort of believe this too. The fact that the Fullbringer arc got cut short despite it being the most conceptually interesting and structurally distinct is basically proof to me that Bleach suffered from needing to survive the rankings dog-pit at a time when pure battle manga were all the rage, and then it basically cultivated an audience that only cared about that shit so even when they tried to back up and go back to anime ghost busters with weird abilities and metaphysics, they were then forced to go BACK to battle manga with TYBW.
Fullbringer arc was really interesting, people think I'm weird for thinking that

Honestly no idea, maybe he just wanted a "cool" moment for Gon, maybe he actually plans to bench him. Also maybe why he abruptly brought his father, but between Gon's reaction, how sudden it is, and the dog water art I couldn't care a little bit about the main character finally accomplishing his goal. Going back to the fight, I think they even if you wanted to really go with the sacrificing your future potential to get adult Gon, turning him into a mummy so you have to use e-boi shenron does nothing to help the story, might as well just have him collapse from exhaustion and then have him recover conventionally over time (minus nen) instead of using a walking mcguffin

One of the silliest asspulls in the war arc. He shouldn't have survived. Naruto shouldn't have been able to save him. None of that made sense, Kishimoto just really didn't want to kill the character. Or any character.
Except for Neji, which was the only single actually relevant/heartfelt loss in a global scale war arc.
As much as I like Naruto, it really went on a downhill after the Pain Arc writing wise.

In my opinion, the downhill slope was immediately once Shippuden started.
      >series is about ninja wars and fighting
      >seems like most ninjas have pretty straightforward powers, some bloodline techniques but nothing too busted
      >Zabuza is regarded as extremely strong and really he's just strong/fast and has a big sword, and throws some water around
      >fast forward to Shippuden
      >first big fight we see is a guy that can fly indefinitely and drop the equivalent a nuclear bomb, and then his strongest technique is literally invisible bombs that blow you up from the inside out within a fuckhuge area (he lost this fight)
Power creep just got out of control and it basically destroyed it's central premise. I don't know how you can have ninja wars when every village has a few people that are Goku level power level by comparison.

you mean aside from the fact that it gets boring and it's why DBZ has declined in popularity over the years?
One might argue that One Piece's strength is that it balances the dramatic with the comedic, the self-serious with the absurd.
        >It worked just fine for multiple top-tier anime
That eventually either went down in popularity, ended poorly or outright got canned.
Because it turns out that unless you're really good at choreographing action (which most shonen mangaka aren't, funnily enough), that just hitting harder because angy doesn't have the same impact when you do it for the 20th time
One Piece has generally set itself apart by being a better mix of more typical shonen battle shit and more adventurous rubberhose comic aesthetics

It's almost as if the guys with the childlike whimsy and cartoonish strength to reject the order of the world are the ones that the World Government puts the highest bounties and priority on taking down

The SOUL of one piece, aka East Blue is grimtone as fuck even if all the villains are goofballs
Buggy is a legit menace and fishmen are legitimate monsters
It's the only part of one piece where pirates actually do pirating

                Again, there's a balance.
Mind you, the guy cutting Zoro (a send-up to the Legend of Zorro) is named Dracula.
There's drama and romance but there's also goofiness too.
You were never going to get a super-serious show with the main character's primary power set being based on rubber. You'll get moments of seriousness when the stakes call for it but it's usually balanced with the absurd.
I don't think it's a coincidence that one of the closest fights Luffy ever had was against Katakuri, who only got stronger when he also embraced the absurd and leaned more into using his fucking Galactic Donut attack, or his entire moveset based on rich confectionaries
It's funny to me that anyone who has been into One Piece for a long time can get upset about the presence of the absurd and comedic in it. It's arguably the biggest reason it didn't get as big in the West in the 00s compared to Bleach and Naruto and DBZ.

Well pursuing your dreams is the big theme of One Piece, and the romance of having ambition.
Obviously you'll face obstacles and even tragedies along the way but the idea is that your dreams still should matter.
Luffy hitting Gear 5 and basically shifting the genre from Battle Manga to Gag Manga always felt appropriate because Battle manga is his opponents and the World Government and Marines are living in. They're almost always firmly in the space of seeing the world in terms of fire power and man power and that's what the world order is about. And Luffy making fun of that idea and paradigm, turning it on its head and pointing out how stupid it is is more thematically consistent than if he unlocked Gear Death or if he just gave up.
I think it's important to remember that becoming King of the Pirates isn't even really defined by being the Strongest Pirate like being Kage is in Naruto. It's about having the drive to follow your dream and it doesn't necessarily have to manifest in the form of "beat up bigger guy than last guy" narratively.

I fucking love One Piece but I will not say it could ever have been considered a battle manga. Its fights are terrible and basically only exist as a vehicle for driving the story forward.

How can one make this claim when pretty much every arc has fighting involved (even from the first chapter)? You should correct it and say " never have have been considered a good battle manga" which is true since the characters spout off random moves out of nowhere with no forehsadowing for the most part outside of maybe haki.

The story mostly focuses on the struggles endured by the characters and how that relates to the greater arc or saga, rather than focusing solely on the fights. It does have a lot of fights, but nothing is ever really explained, and the fights themselves are often incredibly illogical. I guess you could consider it a battle manga, but the term "battle manga" to me denotes a special importance placed on fighting that isn't really seen in One Piece.

Did we not just get a bunch of explanations and flashbacks in Wano for nearly every Straw Hat? I think the only ones that didn't really get to shine were Jinbei, Franky, Nami and Usopp. In fact if you go by the anime most hype in recent years was brought about by the animation of Gear 5 (a fight).

Yes but they still make up a large chunk of One Piece. It's a battle manga with some decent payoffs in the setting but to say that it's just there to fill the time is disingenuous when Oda clearly gives them some background and explanation in post-time skip. It hasn't been that long since ryuo was a thing for example and that had a whole training arc attached to it.

It's not a martial art manga but it is a battle manga (and that's not a derogatory term so I'm not sure why you think it is in context unless you think popular thing = bad in which case you should just stop reading One Piece then). I don't even particularly hate Gear 5's abilities but the execution of its reveal was terrible (Who's Who just bringing it up all of a sudden a few chapters before and it basically making all of the time spent on giving ryuo build up to becoming pointless).

Then why spend so much time making it a big deal? You'd think with how much Wano wank Oda was going on about (in particular during Oden Piece) that he'd let something from Wano be what delivers the final blow to Kaido. Just seems like an incredible waste and merely an excuse to bring Straw Hats back into the relevance of WG sooner than later since the story is near its end. I say they should've saved Gear 5 for after they beat Kaido and have to deal with the new admiral that invades the island.

NTA but the battles in One Piece, at their best, are much more about having something weird go on on screen
It's funny to me that people like Gear 2 and junk when I'd say the best fights in One Piece are when either someone uses a new move or such that is visually weirder than what we've seen before, or characters use existing moves in a new visually distinct way
The worst fights in this series, at least in manga form, are the ones where nothing really new happens because the way fights are actually laid out and paced and shot is kind of boring when it's just normal punching and kicking.
Funnily enough, some of these fights end up being the big ones at the ends of arcs so they get the all-star treatment in the anime which makes them easier to enjoy.
I still hold Katakuri vs Luffy up as the best middle ground between gag manga and battle manga that the series has done post-time skip. I like that Katakuri actually got stronger when he embraced the silliness of his abilities. That's about as in-line with the very ideas and themes of One Piece as you can get

I've actually come to not like the casual use of ideas like "Plot armor" in specific situations.

Yes, every shonen protagonist in history got very, very lucky with their various encounters throughout their series. Anyone could comb through different events where realistically, the main character should have died and only lived thanks to chance arrivals, mercy, pure luck, and so on.

But that's the case for ANY legend. That's what makes them legends. They ALL had to defy the odds. Skill or talent can only truly take you so far. To be a legend, you unironically need luck. Otherwise, it'd be no different from following around a side character who dies off in like, 17 chapters in some insignificant way.

Why would you want this though? Plot armor can be obnoxious when it's too obvious but wouldn't it be super anticlimactic to have the characters die to food poisoning or a stray bullet, ignoring the potential they could have to the narrative?

Can be handled by changing perspectives and then finishing the story by following someone else, or if you don't kill the protagonist at least have some shit happen to him, something with permanent effect at least. If you're going to focus on the same person all the time then they need to be vulnerable in some way, if not them directly then people they care about, without credible stakes you can't get properly invested into a fight as there are no risks

That's at least fair. I just don't abide by the notion that killing characters willy nilly automatically makes it better. Akame ga Kill did it and you can tell the author regretted it.
                >without credible stakes you can't get properly invested into a fight as there are no risks

Akame ga kill was killing characters from chapter 1 for shock value, it's not a positive example for anything. Also replacing characters depends on how it's done and who it's replaced with, and yeah most people hate character replacements but that's an argument for popularity and not quality though of course most authors want to sell and make money. And something bad happening isn't absolutely necessary, but you need to make it seem like it COULD happen, but generally the longer a story goes with threats that amount to nothing the less credible any further threat looks. Look at promised Neverland and its initial arc, it wouldn't have had the same impact if we hadn't seen that girl. Anyway for a manga with actual consequences you can check out Chi - Chikyuu no Undou ni Tsuite you'll get used to the art style, at least I did.

The REAL "lose X years of your life" meme in One Piece is when Ivankov brings Luffy back from death in Impel Down, and that's something that should be acknowledged by the end of the series or Oda is a hack

it's not like this is Dragon Ball and he knew he was gonna be saved afterwards. as far as Guy knew this was a sincere last ditch effort where he maxed himself the fuck out at the cost of the rest of his life. even after Naruto saves him, he still never regains use of his legs. so he did at the very least still end up sacrificing his ability to walk and to be a shinobi. this action was still significant and still had permanent consequences.

The most baffling phenomenon lately may be that there's Boruto fans out there, I don't mean Naruto fans that stuck around to see their favorite characters except Guy and Kakashi get raped by the story out of morbid curiosity but actual Boruto-only fans.

The art style is so unbelievable bad that I just can't find anything that justifies being a Boruto fan unless maybe they exclusively watch the anime and even that's reaching because it's boring as fuck, people can shit talk naruto all they want but the consistency there was something else, it had real legs at the very least, maybe the games will finally give any older fan to actually like this series but CC2 has gotten too comfortable.

              >Kaguya is 4% of the story at the literal very end of Naruto. lol
So, let me get this straight. Boruto, a completely different story, undermines Naruto, but Naruto itself doesn't.

                Anonymous

yeah. cause i can show someone all of Naruto up until the episode before Zetsu double crosses Madara - tell them that Naruto and Sasuke defeated Madara - then skip the the Final Valley fight and continue on to the end from there and literally nothing about their experience would change other than having missed a buncha big fight stuff with Obito, Kakashi getting both Sharingan, and the new Sanin NaruSaksuSaku thing.

Kaguya's plot relevance is nigh uninexistant up until she shows up or after. even Toneri can be handwaved as another wild movie villain who doesn't really matter to the main story aside from facilitating the events of a movie. you can't undermine your story when it's like 4% at the very end that doesn't really do anything other than create another boss battle above Madara until Boruto starts sucking off the Otsusuki 24/7 and has the entire plot revolve around them.

I always assumed the 8 gates would become the technique-of-preference of some sort of proto-communist group or something
Like, I'm surprised the fuckery of the bloodlines, between Naruto, Madara, Sasuke and others, would make normies without any ninjutsu or genjutsu talent freak the fuck out and want to start being able to defend themselves

          Anonymous

Oh, I presume because it may actually require a lot of practice and training. Like it's implied that Gai had to teach and train Lee to do it, and it actually took his dad Dai DECADES to perfect the technique. So i imagine there's a combination of physical conditioning needed to do it as well as withstand it, and then there's an actual bit of practice to go against what is a natural biological instinct and tendency.
I always sort of likened 8 gates in my head to trying to take control over your subconscious, automatic process for beating your heart. It would take an immense amount of effort (if even possible) to try to reach back into your own mind for a process you're not supposed to have control of and start operating it manually. It's bad enough when you're reminded that you can manually do certain auto-pilot processes like keep your breathing.
So I guess the fact that that would have to be a manual process of teaching and practicing with each clone to get them to do this thing is why Orochimaru doesn't do it (as is my headcanon)

Naruto has always been the dumbest fuck in the series
like, even after he gets recognized by the village after beating pain, he still wants to be top desk worker. And it's not like he even wants to do so to change how things are done, he just wants to do so.
Even when he's a fucking retard at the logistical, managerial or academic side of running the village, the characters lock him in a room to study so he can be hokage.
His goal might be the most retarded that any shonen protag has had since it's not actually what he wants but he still does a job that no longer serves a purpose for him and he is not a naturally good fit for.
Like, fucking sakura should be hokage with the amount of desk work it involves. she was always the smartest of the three, she was one of the handful of people during the chunin exam who didn't even need to cheat to pass the test.
it would be the best place for her given she's pretty weak compared to naruto and sasuke and they would be better off sent on peace-keeping missions

Learning a skill and being a fighting genius are two different things. Part of being a fighting genius is the ability to think on your feet and adapt to a situation which he rarely did. Hell, as a shonen protagonist his skill set is fucking abysmal.

He learned how to freestyle Rasengan after seeing a child play with a toy though. He also sped through his training with sage mode really quickly despite only recently learning about different element of chakra. He was also very quickly able to tame his tailed beast even though he had years of resentment of it for ruining his developmental years and making him an orphan.

He is quite literally ninja jesus anon. The only thing I don't like is the final arc where him and Sasuke are bestowed god-like powers after dying and resurrecting to beat the moon bunny who comes out of left field with Zetsu randomly being important all of a sudden robbing all of Madara's setup as the final antagonist. Now THAT is hack storytelling.

Sasuke had chakra manipulation down at the start of Shippuden. He was materializing fucking lightning swords. All Naruto could do was make a big rasengan with clones. I'm not buying that. I've always found the idea that Naruto's strength is his friends to be funny because most of the time, Naruto actually just beats the shit out of whoever he's fighting. Like it's not like he's a great organizer or a particularly convincing person in terms of charisma or argument.
Like, in most series, Power of Friendship is "I'll fight even harder because my friends are on the line", but Naruto is sort of propped up as being good at uniting people like some sort of leader but he's not really good at that save for the fact that the writer just sort of has characters agree or give up whenever he starts talking.
But in fights, he actually usually wins on his own. Hell, during the Ninja War, he's actually the one turning the tide of a losing battle by sending out weaker shadow clones of himself to different fronts, implying he's probably worth more than the entire Ninja army combined
There's that one scene of him granting everyone some of nine tails power and they all do rasengans but I don't even think that did much in the immediate fight they were up against because Kishimoto was still writing Madara into an unbeatable corner

So Sakura has the most fine-tuned chakra control of the three of them, at least pre-timeskip. I guess she also does post-timeskip because using Tsunade's shit is presumable pretty chakra intensive for a normal person deprived of beasts or bloodline.

I lost interest in the series when Sasuke had his angsty escapade, I expected some melodrama to come out of that only for him to return anyway, and leaving that size I didn't like how the series was increasingly relying on flashy techniques. I thought this was about ninjas! I want more traps, more stealth, carefully executed plans to get the upper hand, instead I got a constantly moving power level, really a shame.

Yeah, kind of fucked how hard they shaft him. Tenten I get, Neji gets his big sacrifice, but Lee had the biggest demotion in importance between pre and post time-skip.
Honestly, I don't see why they couldn't just have Gai or Lee outright beat Madara, and then have moon rabbit show up afterwards once he was fully weakened. Like, what contribution to the plot is it to have Gai FAIL to kill Madara, and then have Naruto and Sasuke handle him for a little, only for him to get Zetsu'd and Rabbit'd without actually getting beaten by Nar and Sas?
Like, it feels like Kishimoto decided he couldn't have a big boss like Madara get beaten by a no-bloodline, no-beast normie so he just had Madara survive an attack which, according to Madara himself, could have killed him

If you're going to treat shounen writing as a list of presuppositions, why bother reading? Why try so hard willing into existence something you dislike?

Also nen exorcism is a perfectly reasonable response to a literal god power against a small group of people. Kurapika is a literal "I win" MC when fighting the troupe; there has to be some counter.

I haven't read one piece (scary to think I could have stayed over a decade ago and I'd still be in Mr oda's wild ride) but the impression I get is that it has the opposite problem of other battle shounen, where they usually start comedic and lighthearted and then become "serious business", while one piece apparently becomes more light hearted as it goes on.

Very few people manage to get a good balance between comedy and drama and one is usually written at three expense of the other.

I've come to terms with the fact that when it comes to action shounen I prefer the more comedic ones because those manga have something to stand on when the story and battles inevitably turn retarded. Shit like Beelzebub and zatch bell

      Anonymous

I prefer comedic mangas cause Japs are just much, much better at writing for that tone/style. Even Zatch Bell as you said, did a lot of things right, and the humor was one of them. If it was a serious manga, a lot of the appeal would have died off.
Full Metal Alchemist, a manga everyone and their dad loves, has a lot of light hearted moments as well, which help punctuate the serious parts. Not to mention the other classics like Gintama, ~~*Cromartie*~~ High School and Bobo-bo Bo-bobo, the low level/comedy adventure tone is what Japs are the best at in the business.
And it's pretty clear why. Japanese is a language ridden with wordplay, manga is a visual medium and it's much easier to tell jokes in that style vs serious drama.

Any fight with him boils down to him pressing his "I win" button which is supposed to have serious repercussions for him but it never actually does. Kinda reminds me of early DBZ when Goku was using the Kaio-ken to beat on Vegeta, but it was visibly wearing on him and ultimately left him in a bad spot.
