By an old PC for $100 that can emulate nearly everything up to PS2.

used to be a rasperry pi for $35 until they started getting scalped

Got pic related for $15 and it runs everything up to Dreamcast and PSP

      Not a console

Sometimes you can find handheld game systems for kids with NES multicart ROMs. I think mine was around $15.

Was able to run both N64 and PS1 games on 720p resolution in Retroarch. I heard that you can run some PSP games without lag as well. Some youtuber demonstrated that you can use 3 controllers simultaneously connected to a USB 3.0 hub.

      >By an old PC
Best option but most people don't want a heavy and noise machine full of cables in their TV room

used to be a rasperry pi for $35 until they started getting scalped

      >rasperry pi for $35
Even better option for a mini retro emulator specially for a third worlder would be a TV box with a Amlogic S905x3 processor for $50 USD

Comparison between Amlogic S905 vs S905x3 vs S922x!

Is it the main reason? I mean, I know they're being scalped, but I've also heard there's a global shortage of electronic components due to the pandemics. That was supposedly the main reason, and further scalping was only the nail in the coffin.

Genesis stuff is very cheap to collect so long as you aren't trying to get into the addon stuff. I struggle to name any games that cost more than like 30$. Castlevania Bloodlines is one of the only expensive ones I can think of right now.

Buy a Wii. Seriously. You can get one for like $50. Maybe even as cheap as $20 if you get one without a functioning disc drive, which you won't need anyway. Takes all of five minutes to softmod and blesses you with:
    >fantastic emulators for all systems through 4th gen
    >5th gen emulators that can comfortably play most popular games
    >official N64 emulators (virtual console) for most games worth playing, if homebrew emulators don't work well enough for a specific game
    >native gamecube and wii support (not retro but still a good feature)
    >tons of controller options
    >optional 240p output
A Wii can play like 80% of games I'd ever want to play.

Bro the wii cannot play 5th gen lmao. No saturn, little playstation, and popular N64 games.

I was able to play Crash and Spyro, SM64 and OoT just fine on homebrew emulators. Certainly not perfect (which is why I didn't group it in with the "fantastic emulators", and specified "the most popular games") but definitely playable. And that was probably 6-7 years ago now, so it's possible the emulators have gotten even better. A lot of the more popular/less complex games like that you'll be fine with if you tinker with the emulator settings. As for saturn, 95% of saturn games worth playing were also on ps1 or 64. And the majority of popular N64 games were released on virtual console which all play as well as you would ever need. Plus to help pad it out, a handful of 5th gen games got ported natively (like Animal Crossing) or officially emulated (like the PS1 Mega Mans) or remade (like Resident Evil) for GC/Wii.

It's been a few years since I tried, but funny enough I had far better luck with PS1 and N64 emulation on the Wii than I did on my Switch when I first softmodded it.

All that said, I do agree that if 5th gen is a priority for you, then the Wii isn't your best bet. I consider the partial ability to play 5th gen games to be an added bonus feature. I mostly played SNES games on it before I moved over to Switch as my main emu box.

Plus a handful more games work well with vc injections https://wiki.gbatemp.net/wiki/Wii_VC_Injections_Compatibility_List#Nintendo_64

So yeah not a gigantic list, and very far from ideal, but a lot of the more popular 5th gen games are playable one way or another, whether through homebrew emulators, vc injections, or official releases.

Doesnt support dragon warrior 7, the only PSX game I want to play. I hate the playstation so much why the FRICK did square Enix have to develop for it, should have been an N64 game.

rip. I definitely wouldn't buy a wii if playing 5th gen is your main goal. But it is fine if you want to dip your toes in

Some of the games have pretty detailed notes that make me think some actual effort was put into making them accurate. But you're right, there's no way to know for sure without testing yourself. The only ones I can personally attest to are Crash 1, Spyro 1, SM64, and OoT

This. Nothing worse than to figure out there's a game breaking bug 30 hours into a long jrpg and you have to transfer your saves and shit to finish.

Also the jannies on this board are the worst on this site pruning stuff that is even slightly negative.

For me it was the Playstation Classic. I bought one on clearance for $40 during the summer of 2019. I would just toss it in my backpack and take it to a friend's place. If you can get an Android box or stick, you'll probably be able to emulate mostly everything up to Dreamcast.

get a free CRT, preferably with component in. then get yourself a wii which covers pretty much everything up to gen 4, some n64 games that got ported if you're into that kind of thing, plus neogeo/cps2 and other less demanding arcade hardware. then get yourself a mechapwn compatible ps2 for like $20 or however much they're going for these days. now you have the entire PS1/2 library covered too.

if nvidia ever bothers to release an updated Shield that would probably be the best non-PC route to take if you're using it on a modern TV, it can handle most things up to 5th gen/dreamcast with 4K shaders in retroarch which is nice to have, not sure if the other cheap android sticks have the gpu muscle for that
