Checked out some PS1 mega collection and randomly stumbled upon this little rhythm game, Vib-Ribbon. Apparently they wanted to let you play it with custom music, so in a stroke of mad genius, the demented fricks made it load and run the whole damn game from RAM. It has very few tracks built in, but they have about as much character as the visuals. Or the character. Ribbon(?) is awesome, and just oozes personality, with wildly different animations depending on your health. It's just really fricking cool.

Bit late to the party, but 10/10, GOTY.

Tell me more about it. I enjoy undiscovered games.

I did a quick archive search, and I don't think I can call it very unknown. Hope that don't put you off. It's a pretty basic rhythm game, you play it on you controller using only 4 buttons (thankfully not 4 face buttons). You get these geometric shapes corresponding to each button, and combinations of them, which makes it a bit more interesting to start with since you actually have to figure out what to press.
There's some playfulness with the presentation, like changing your perspective, making shit all wavy, slowdowns (might just be the default tracks), and sometimes symbols coming at different speeds, but it's a really basic game at heart. It's mainly just an absolute visual treat. And not just the graphical style, the body language is perfect. If you're hanging on by a thread, it shows. If you're crushing it, you know.
If you ever did that thing in the car as a kid where you're imagining someone running alongside you and skipping past obstacles, that's this game. But to music. Style out the ass.

I haven't put any custom music in yet, so I can't really speak for the difficulty, but it's supposed to work on an emulator as well so it's all good.
There's not a ton to be said about it, it's a really simple game. But it's just fricking cool, and I thought it had a pretty interesting story behind it too (running the whole thing from RAM so you can put your own music CDs in your playstation).

Is Vib-Ribbon really undiscovered? I've know about this game since I was a kid, though I do live in the UK where the game actually released (it never came out in America) and have always been a big rhythm game fan. I just feel like Vib-Ribbon is one of the more well know 'obscure' ps1 games, it even got referenced in astrobots playroom on PS5 or whatever that game was called.

I wouldn't call vib-ribbon an undiscovered game, but I certainly wouldn't call it a popular one either.

it's among baby's first hidden gems
        not mainstream, but hardly undiscovered

It only had a EU and Japan release.

its only really undiscovered if you're a millenial, if you're a zoomer you probably saw the countless waifugay threads from 2020 onwards since that's around when most started lurking, or the ethots on tiktok basing their aesthetic on vibri

You can do a similar thing in wipeout, idk if it was intended but you can pause and swap in a music CD and it'll play the music, you gotta put the wipeout disc back in at the end of the race tho

That's almost cooler when it's such a hacky workaround needing the disc. Isn't that a racing game though? Does the music affect the gameplay in any way?

        I don't think so, I haven't played it in a while though.

Well it's still neat. A wonder anyone figured that out, doesn't sound likely it was an advertised feature.

I said I checked the archives, had a little more time to go through it now. Seems almost all 8 pages of threads about this game were made by a spamming furry waifugay 2-3 years ago lol
so I might really have picked the wrong image for this

I like Vib-Ribbon's art and presentation but I'm gonna be honest, people need to shut the frick up about PS1 rhythm games in general because they all suck wiener. Yes, even Jam the Lamb.

What do you mean? I had a hard time timing my inputs until I stopped looking so hard and started following the rhythm (don't play much rhythm games).
Does it not work well with custom music or something?

        >start following the rhythm
Again, there is no rhythm, there is no rhythm stop pretending, and then the music is represented by þ and that's done by r1 + triangle. Just admit you're a waifugay.

I honestly don't know what you mean, seems to follow the rhythm pretty well https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ewR6R5JtXE

Apparently the game was originally a commissioned tie-in for a Mercedes car, of course the deal fell through and we ended up with this adorable little game. Thought that was pretty interesting.

I didn't mean to make any claims like that. I'm way out of my element in regards to the platform and genre. Just wanted to share it to anyone else not 100% on 25 year old console history.

Mods and jannies hate this game. I remember how they would delete these threads practically on-sight a few years ago.
