gay, I'm not talking about the Disney film that takes inspiration from the muttified French version of the legend. I'm talking about the original tale from Wales where Merlin was Arthur's Druid.
Should be a tetrahedron with another vertice just for speech/mental. With fighter + mental being some strategist or something, "rougue" + mental going for bard and, finnally, mage + mental goin for some psionic shit.
makes sense for tabletop games but vidya should have a division between combat and exploration stats. tabletop too imo but i see why they dont do that.
I have never been able to bring myself to roll a merchant or hacker or chemist type character in any game because i'd limiting myself to the most boring parts of that game.
Actually if anyone can recommend an alternative build that's actually fun in any game that would be cool. I'm thinking about doing an Oblivion merchant who just uses scrolls in combat. Is that viable?
any game that lets you build a character and mix magic and melee really, you could probably create a spellsword style character in dark souls if you wanted but like anon said above witcher is a decent example but that game also does alchemy to enhance the skills as well. i suppose a mystic knight from ddda would be a spellsword of sorts.
>battlemage
Staff/Robes/AoE >Spellsword
Armor/Weapon/Single target
battlemages can have armor in some cases but usually they're back line nukes, they shit all over unit formations
Seer, but always wrong about anything important >Trust me Hero, this exact scenario will NOT happen >It happens
I'd like to imagine after enough failures they'd recruit me to give consistently wrong predictions they could invert for great success.
Either bard or dancer, too bad they're pretty uncommon in vidya and when they do exist it's in team based shit where they're mostly in a supporting role
Recently I've been playing Grim Dawn modded and have a Pyre Master (D2 Necro+Earth) and a Hunting character. I honestly feel like despite them having a level difference of like 40 the Hunting one is stronger.
I need to rethink my Pyre Master.
Unironically why don't any games have a class system like this? The closer you are to any edge of the spectrum of your abilities determines your class, not your class determining your abilities.
It's a lot of effort for what appears to be very little gain. Most of the classes in the pic just overlap each other and the developer has to think hard on how to make these classes different from each other.
Unironically why don't any games have a class system like this? The closer you are to any edge of the spectrum of your abilities determines your class, not your class determining your abilities.
one autistic idea I had for an rpg system was your class would be determined by your Archetype and your Power Source.
Archetypes being
Warrior, Scoundrel, Priest, Mage, etc
Power Source being
Might. Nature, Divinity, Magic, Skill, etc
So a Warrior of Skill would be a Duelist, a Scoundrel of Skill would be a Rogue, a Priest of Skill would be an Inquisitor, a Mage of Skill would be a Spellthief, etc.
an the combination of the two would determine your abilities and how they functioned.
I feel like these archetypes are a little too narrow and specific otherwise yeah same idea. Except I'm autistic so I insisted on using unique terminology. The hardest one was coming up with a unique concept for a warrior who used magic as a power source. Eventually I settled on the idea of the Armiger. An Armiger is a person entitled to heraldic arms. The idea is these magic warriors would literally draw mystic power from their heraldry, and they would be able to add features to their coat of arms as they leveled up to customize their abilities which would involve things like conjuring magic weapons, enchantments, etc. The idea also was these heraldrys would be sort of pseudo sentient forces in their own right capable of choosing wielders so you could have a peasant suddenly getting heraldry etc for rags to riches types, and naturally the heraldry would compel or lure you to go out and commit feats. Sort of like Sorcerers but with swords.
The reason it was so hard is it took me forever to think of a name or concept that wasn't just "spellsword" which is kind of limiting and specific. Like why the fuck would we call the guy with a magic ball and chain a spellsword? I needed something agnostic.
Because it's not really a class system then. You're playing a "hero" that can slowly evolve into some specific direction, like Fallout.
Classes by definition are meant to be classist as in classificational as in distinct.
Battle Mage >Put all points into nothing but Int, Wisdom and Health >Create Weapons and Armor of pure magic >Kill warriors in Melee Combat >still also Kill Mages in Wizard Combat
Heh, nothing personell I just gotta teach myself some kind of way to protect against rogues from insta-gibbing me.
Top 5:
1. Dragoon
2. Red Mage
3. Summoner
4. Gunslinger
5. Spellsword
There were a lot vying for 4/5, those two barely won out. Classes like 'Magician' or 'Dreamwalker', stuff like that would really be fun to play around with, see what kind of adventures you could have with a party of unconventional 'heroes'.
I like all styles of classes too much to pick one, so the idea of having a bit of each, appeals to me. Plus, the thought of exploring some magical world excites me. Especially if I can do so with some mystical companion.
Simplistic Mail with Leather. Maybe a small half breastplate over my chest to protect my vitals. Long Sword, Hatchet, Dagger, Bow. Though I would probably prefer to lean more into magic, so a Staff or Wand would also be good. Basic Stealth or Perception type abilities. Spend my time outside camping, hunting, exploring ruins.
A Necromancer! I hoped I'd never have to lay my eyes on one of your kind again. ... The recent troubles in this area have brought out all kinds, I see. Nevertheless, your money's good...
Something I liked from FFTA(and A2) was the White Monk class. A fist-fighter who taps into 'chakra' and stuff for healing properties just makes sense to me.
Though they don't get any direct healing abilities outside of their self-target, which was kind of a shame. If they got a melee-target heal (since you can't redirect the flow of ki or whatever by distance) it would've been perfect.
>Dark Magic >Curses >Wards >Occultism >Binding >Demon / Spirit Summoning >Shadow Magic / Stealth
I like edgy magic mixed with a bit of stealth and or direct melee combat. Though again - heavily magic.
For me, its dick ass thief
Fencer or Dragoon if I can have a rifle
Why the heck is Rogue the third one? Wouldn't it be like ranger or something?
Bard chads where we at?
I don't exactly know what a weapon master is but it sounds cool so I'm picking it
Everything in the turquoise region (Alchemist, tinkerer, etc) is based in every game they are present in, but almost no games include themy4xyxm
Warrior
Pick Druid so I can play the role of Merlin for a Knight.
Merlin is a wizard, not a druid.
gay, I'm not talking about the Disney film that takes inspiration from the muttified French version of the legend. I'm talking about the original tale from Wales where Merlin was Arthur's Druid.
Looks like a Druid to me.
Merlin's magic mostly let's him transform into animals. He's a druid
Oh, the Disney version? Sure, fine, that fits. But he's more of a sorcerer or a geomancer in the actual legends.
What class would Gandalf be? He was skilled with a sword.
Anything but a soÿ mage.
Summoner tends to be my favorite class in whatever game it's in.
Clerk. Gotta sell some shit and advertise great deals to the adventurers
>Not the one you can roll
Anyways, summoner or beastmaster because monster taming/raising is the best genre.
Should be a tetrahedron with another vertice just for speech/mental. With fighter + mental being some strategist or something, "rougue" + mental going for bard and, finnally, mage + mental goin for some psionic shit.

>clerk
acolyte with magic swords that i swing around
Battlemage reporting in
why have an artillery line when you could have 3 dudes flinging fireballs?
What's the difference between battlemages and spellswords? Genuinely curious
Battlemages are like those Imperial mages in Total War: Warhammer. Spellswords are like Geralt from Witcher.
I see, guess I'm still sticking with Spellswords
Any vidya for quintessential Spellsword feel?
any game that lets you build a character and mix magic and melee really, you could probably create a spellsword style character in dark souls if you wanted but like anon said above witcher is a decent example but that game also does alchemy to enhance the skills as well. i suppose a mystic knight from ddda would be a spellsword of sorts.
Oh right, Dark Souls lets you dual-wield magic and sword, I keep meaning to play it but never get to it
Dark Messiah. You get might AND magic
You can also play Dishonored like this
Thanks, I'll check 'em out
it depends what game you're playing
spellswords are rogue-ish with some magic, more melee less magic
battlemages are more magic but heavy armor
>battlemage
Staff/Robes/AoE
>Spellsword
Armor/Weapon/Single target
battlemages can have armor in some cases but usually they're back line nukes, they shit all over unit formations
warlock FOREVER
Cavalier if I’m allowed a flamboyant cavalier outfit, red mage, or necromancer if I’m allowed to raise multiple enemy corpses at once.
>stalker
Seer, but always wrong about anything important

>It happens
I'd like to imagine after enough failures they'd recruit me to give consistently wrong predictions they could invert for great success.
Either bard or dancer, too bad they're pretty uncommon in vidya and when they do exist it's in team based shit where they're mostly in a supporting role
Under what circumstances would a Bard or a Dancer not be supporting classes?
Solo Hunting Horn
Somewhere in the bottom right please
rhythm based combat mechanics like hifi rush/metal hellsinger
Summoner or Bard
Something that isn't ghey
I like Knights and Paladins best.

Going for red mage, battle mage or any other cool mage/warrior thing inshallah
I'll rollll
Rock and roll.
On the one hand, I like fighting-type classes, on the other, what precisely am I supposed to do as a shield bearer?
Shield slam enemies in the face with your giant metal plate
And tank for your team a bit, I suppose

Finally someone posts it. Rollin
Rolling
This has WAY too many classes and is probably extremely granular in the differences between them.
1. Dragon Knight
2. Bard
3. Beastmaster
4. Gunslinger
Unironically why don't any games have a class system like this? The closer you are to any edge of the spectrum of your abilities determines your class, not your class determining your abilities.
It takes passion and effort, plus some braincells to implement and balance
It's a lot of effort for what appears to be very little gain. Most of the classes in the pic just overlap each other and the developer has to think hard on how to make these classes different from each other.

That's a really cool system anon, quick make a game out of it before some fag steals it
Isn't that literally just Dungeons and Dragons 4e?
Yes but you don't do daily powers so grogs won't reee also no murder suicide on the web dev team
>can play as a Skillmancer
I will now buy your game
When I had this idea people made fun of me.

But is it actual arcane magic or is it more spirit-like, for example your ancestor's mastery turned spirit infusing the blade
I feel like the correct answer is "fluff it as whatever you want".
Because it's not really a class system then. You're playing a "hero" that can slowly evolve into some specific direction, like Fallout.

Berserker

wizard best class
berserker every time, all the time, no exceptions, no decision necessary ever
All these classes and no barbarian.
gunner is always the best class any time it's an option. especially if it has moves like equilibrium.
Equilibrium looked cool but its plot and writing were garbage and the gun kata was over choreographed erol Flynn nonsense
the plot was just fahrenheit 451
All who oppose me... beware.
A Necromancer! I hoped I'd never have to lay my eyes on one of your kind again. ... The recent troubles in this area have brought out all kinds, I see. Nevertheless, your money's good...
Whats the closest thing to a brawler healer/support?
Probably Paladin
Monk if he's like Kharazim.
Something I liked from FFTA(and A2) was the White Monk class. A fist-fighter who taps into 'chakra' and stuff for healing properties just makes sense to me.
