makes sense for tabletop games but vidya should have a division between combat and exploration stats. tabletop too imo but i see why they dont do that.

I have never been able to bring myself to roll a merchant or hacker or chemist type character in any game because i'd limiting myself to the most boring parts of that game.

Actually if anyone can recommend an alternative build that's actually fun in any game that would be cool. I'm thinking about doing an Oblivion merchant who just uses scrolls in combat. Is that viable?

it depends what game you're playing
spellswords are rogue-ish with some magic, more melee less magic
battlemages are more magic but heavy armor

I see, guess I'm still sticking with Spellswords
Any vidya for quintessential Spellsword feel?

            Anonymous

any game that lets you build a character and mix magic and melee really, you could probably create a spellsword style character in dark souls if you wanted but like anon said above witcher is a decent example but that game also does alchemy to enhance the skills as well. i suppose a mystic knight from ddda would be a spellsword of sorts.

Unironically why don't any games have a class system like this? The closer you are to any edge of the spectrum of your abilities determines your class, not your class determining your abilities.

      Anonymous

It takes passion and effort, plus some braincells to implement and balance

      Anonymous

It's a lot of effort for what appears to be very little gain. Most of the classes in the pic just overlap each other and the developer has to think hard on how to make these classes different from each other.

Unironically why don't any games have a class system like this? The closer you are to any edge of the spectrum of your abilities determines your class, not your class determining your abilities.

one autistic idea I had for an rpg system was your class would be determined by your Archetype and your Power Source.

        Archetypes being
        Warrior, Scoundrel, Priest, Mage, etc
        Power Source being
Might. Nature, Divinity, Magic, Skill, etc

So a Warrior of Skill would be a Duelist, a Scoundrel of Skill would be a Rogue, a Priest of Skill would be an Inquisitor, a Mage of Skill would be a Spellthief, etc.

an the combination of the two would determine your abilities and how they functioned.

When I had this idea people made fun of me.

            Anonymous

I feel like these archetypes are a little too narrow and specific otherwise yeah same idea. Except I'm autistic so I insisted on using unique terminology. The hardest one was coming up with a unique concept for a warrior who used magic as a power source. Eventually I settled on the idea of the Armiger. An Armiger is a person entitled to heraldic arms. The idea is these magic warriors would literally draw mystic power from their heraldry, and they would be able to add features to their coat of arms as they leveled up to customize their abilities which would involve things like conjuring magic weapons, enchantments, etc. The idea also was these heraldrys would be sort of pseudo sentient forces in their own right capable of choosing wielders so you could have a peasant suddenly getting heraldry etc for rags to riches types, and naturally the heraldry would compel or lure you to go out and commit feats. Sort of like Sorcerers but with swords.

The reason it was so hard is it took me forever to think of a name or concept that wasn't just "spellsword" which is kind of limiting and specific. Like why the frick would we call the guy with a magic ball and chain a spellsword? I needed something agnostic.

But is it actual arcane magic or is it more spirit-like, for example your ancestor's mastery turned spirit infusing the blade

Because it's not really a class system then. You're playing a "hero" that can slowly evolve into some specific direction, like Fallout.
Classes by definition are meant to be classist as in classificational as in distinct.

I like all styles of classes too much to pick one, so the idea of having a bit of each, appeals to me. Plus, the thought of exploring some magical world excites me. Especially if I can do so with some mystical companion.

Simplistic Mail with Leather. Maybe a small half breastplate over my chest to protect my vitals. Long Sword, Hatchet, Dagger, Bow. Though I would probably prefer to lean more into magic, so a Staff or Wand would also be good. Basic Stealth or Perception type abilities. Spend my time outside camping, hunting, exploring ruins.

Though they don't get any direct healing abilities outside of their self-target, which was kind of a shame. If they got a melee-target heal (since you can't redirect the flow of ki or whatever by distance) it would've been perfect.
