In nip they're just "Kame-san". The English translators gave them really weird names for some reason.

They were always Shellcreepers in the arcade version. It even says so in one of the intermission scenes. It's Japdevs that drank the kool-aid and simplified the enemy names for the home ports, which is why Sidesteppers were also called "Crabs". It wasn't until Super Smash Bros. Brawl came out that the record was sorta corrected and they went back to using their arcade names in all regions (save for Slipice because Freezie was already established in the previous game sadly). The next game did the same thing by doing the Nintendo equivalent of setting Japautists aside, looking them dead in the eyes, and shaking them by the shoulders and screaming "LADY AND PAULINE ARE THE SAME CHARACTER YOU STUPID FRICKS."

            >Pauline is introduced in Donkey Kong.
            >When is a character called "Lady" introduced?
I'll refer you to the wiki's write-up, but: the Donkey Kong damsel had no consistent name in the early arcade days, the closest was her Japanese name "Lady" which is basically the equivalent to Mario's "Jumpman" placeholder but translators often rendered it as "lady", "Pauline" caught on around the mid-80's especially with the NES port in the West and later the 1994 Game Boy game in Japan, at some point Nintendo started to sometimes refer to the old design as Lady again for legacy reasons so Japanese and wannabe weebs alike both thought they were two different characters and some third-party Japanese media started implying that, eventually in the 2010's Nintendo put their foot down and confirmed they were always the same character. It's almost like the Kirby fandom's Ado/Adeleine moronation except a little more understandable since Japanese in fairness always associated the name Pauline with a radical redesign.

Yep, as I said, mid-80's. Pauline showed up in licensed media and misc merchandise earlier than game manuals and promotional materials. She was also named after the (now ex-)wife of a NoA employee who managed the arcade cabinet warehouse, after the success of the arcade game.

Weren't they still called Bowser's kids as late as New Super Mario Bros. Wii? Bowser Jr. wasn't called Bowser's "only" child until later. I think.

                >But they've been called the Koopalings since the beginning, what are you on about?
I remember them being called the Koopa Kids and I never heard the term Koopaling until NSMB. I went back and checked the manuals and in SMB3 they're just called "Bowser's kids" but in SMW they do use the term "Koopa Kids" so that must be where I got that from. I didn't have Nintendo Power back then so I didn't see the article in your pic.

                >Weren't they still called Bowser's kids as late as New Super Mario Bros. Wii?
Nope. NSMB Wii in 2009 was their first appearance since SMW. That manual only refers to them as Koopalings, then Miyamoto made a statement in a 2012 interview saying they're not Bowser's kids and Bowser Jr is his only child.

The strategy guides were written by people outside the development team, usually Nintendo Power contributors. Whoever wrote that guide was calling them that because of their own past memory, the actual NSMB Wii manual never calls them Koopa Kids or Bowser's kids while the SMB3 and SMW manuals explicitly do. I'm quite sure in Miyamoto's mind Bowser Jr's introduction in Sunshine already retconned the Koopa Kids as not being Bowser's children, he just didn't say it on the public record until much later.

                Anonymous

isn't it just as possible that the name "koopa kids" never expressly implied that they were actual children of bowser? Just because the english manual for the game says so doesn't mean that it wasn't a simple misinterpretation. It's not as if english translation in releases was a gold standard by any means in the 80s.

                Anonymous

They were pretty clear that the Koopalings were Bowser's offspring, although they apparently stopped calling them that a lot sooner than the English side (supposedly SMB3's JP manual was the only one that directly said that, and by Yoshi's Safari they stopped those references altogether outside of a mention in a Bowser trophy in SSB Melee). The Koopalings were renamed in Japanese - they were originally some variant of "Kokuppa" (Little Koopas/Bowsers), but in NSMB Wii it was more like "Bowser's Minions" (which is why Nintendo of Europe went with that name for a while) and eventually "Kuppa 7 Ninshuu" (Bowser 7 Team). Kuppa/Koopa more specifically refers to Bowser in Japan, not really the race, hence the renames. English also seems to be a bit more lax since they Koopalings are still referred to as siblings on occasion but Japanese for some reason no longer mentions that either.

They were unnamed in the Japanese SMB3 (were just called the Koopalings), and the cartoon was made before the English localization was done. Technically it was Nintendo of America that gave them the wrong names.

I wonder how true that story is when the first episode aired about a year after the initial NA release (July 15, 1989 via PlayChoice-10 vs. September 8, 1990).

I always thought the goombas were bad mushrooms because https://translate.google.com/?sl=auto&tl=en&text=gomba but then I found out about the nipnong name "kuribo" which means something like "chestnut-y" (think of "-bo" as an ending in Nip similar to "-y" in English; whereas "Mikey" would be an affectionate diminutive of "Michael," "Aki-bo" or "A-bo" could be one for "Akihito"). To me, callin'em "chestnuts" is just fricking wrong. Dem homies does not look like no chestnuts. Dems is mushrooms.

you can't stomp on them, he didn't play the fricking game

      lol
That's what I was thinking, but maybe he meant the SMB arcade cabinet, not OG Mario Bros.

They're not chestnuts, the manual very specifically calls them mushrooms

Yeah, it's weird. They're explicitly called mushrooms in the manual too.

Chestnut mushrooms are a common type of mushroom.

They're not called chestnut mushrooms in nip, though.

Not kuritake, but TSUkuritake. Literally "usable mushroom".

that doesn't mean "usable", it's referring to 作り which more than likely refers to how you can make food with it. "usable" could be interpreted one way as this, but given that's not exactly the use of the kanji, it would be more accurate to translate its literal meaning as "cooking mushroom".

I'm struggling to verify whether or not there is a くりたけ that also matches the nomenclature origins of "chestnut mushroom"

Fair, English isn't my first language and I wasn't entirely sure how to word the translation.

If Mario ever had cannon... they were called 'turtles' before he entered the mushroom kingdom. Mario learned that they were called Koopa Troopas and minions to King Koopa.

Shellcreepers were never established as the same kind of turtle as the Koopas despite their similarities.

One could forgive Pratt for calling them koopas.
However, if he really played the game a lot he'd know you don't stomp on them.

I mean, TECHNICALLY, he's not totally wrong. Shellcreepers are considered the root member of the Turtle Tribe, or in other words, Koopas. The tentative names of several turtles in early SMB documents even all ended in "-Creeper" so Koopa Troopas may have been Shellcreepers at one point. He is 100% wrong about the "stomping...in Mario Bros. Arcade" part though, you kick them off the platforms after they're stunned. Wasn't there a similar controversy when the movie cast was revealed, where one of the voice actors clearly didn't know what the hell they were talking about? Was it Chris Pratt again?
