I was in my 20s when I finally got around to playing CT. Replayed it again since then. It was great.
There are a lot of games I didn't have when I was young that I tried later in life that ended up deserving the praise they got. I honestly think old games were just better in general, I'm rarely disappointed with anything I've tried from the mid 90s to mid 2000s.

I never got to play a SNES era rpg
It would be interesting if one of these days i started playing a game like Sea of Stars and then went back to play classics like Chrono Trigger and see what happens
This is actual projection. Seriously says a lot how sad you are now, and the fact you can't even imagine other people enjoying things genuinely. You might want to stop posting on Ganker if it's causing to be this jaded.
Fuck. I really thought that the game was going to change artstyles from 2d to 3d in the Sea of stars section just like The Messenger did, changing from 8 bit style to 16 bit style.
Cool game anyway though, just because I grabbed it because it was included in the pass.
I liked it but it's clearly lacking it's own identity and is just a mish-mash of ideas borrowed from other JRPGs
And that once pirate character who breaks the fourth wall is insufferable
How hard is it to take your own creation seriously? Like you put all this effort into worldbuilding, characters, locations, and then shit all over it by going "HAHA JRPG TROPE FUNNY"
Shit is retarded
Mike Mignola always felt somewhat embarassed by the stuff he was writing in Hellboy, so he'd add a bit of silliness to ease his concious.
It's pretty crazy to imagine someone who was as popular as Mignola thinking that way, since Hellboy was selling gangbusters from the first issue, but he apparently always doubted his success and was waiting for the day people would lose interest
Damn, that's crazy. I'm working on my own game and I don't think I'd ever wanna put stuff in to specifically pander to people. I have a creative vision and I'm sticking to it, I wouldn't dream of breaking the fourth wall in such a way Sea of Stars did, it's really cringy and undermines the entire game. Heaven forbid you get immersed in a game's unique world, we'll put some silly forth wall breaking gags to break said immersion!
Just keep levity in mind whe you're writing.
I used HB as an example, but that doesn't mean it was a bad thing. A lot of the most iconic scenes in the comic came from this sort of mindset.
You need to remember: YOU are a lot more invested in this world than the reader is, you have to hook them into this setting.
Hellboy wouldn't have been nearly as popular if it was just serious discussions about Hell's throne and fights.
True, you have a point there. But I think the biggest issue is the forth wall breaking. I'm all about levity and having funny moments, but you don't tap on the screen and say "HEYA PLAYER, YOU'RE PLAYING A VIDEO GAME! DON'T YOU HATE IT WHEN *insert JRPG trope here*?!"
A monkey with a gun? Yeah if it fits within the world and it's funny, then yeah that's awesome lmao
It's a role playing game (even though the majority of game is solving puzzles) and is/was shilled as much as other 2 mentioned games. Actually even more, but that makes sense since it came out before SoS and CE.
I am Setsuna takes leaps around it and it is still an average game.
I was astounded by the lack of personality of the main characters and how unengaging the story was. I kept waiting hours and hours for an ounce of characterization until I dropped the game. Also, no exploration whatsoever.
The only thing it has going on for it is level desing.
Didn’t they already make that? It was called i am setsuna. had combat that felt very Chrono Trigger but then everything from the characters to the journey was incredibly generic. God I’d love to see more sick dual and triple techs to spam though, setsuna had that. One of your first techs is literally cross slash, they couldn’t be more on the nose with what they wanted
Anon...
EVERY indie role playing game with pixel graphics is labeled as Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy. This is not the first case.
Why do people do this, I don't know. It's the same with those who are saying shit like >yooo this is bringing us back to the golden age of JRPGs
simply because...it's made by people who played JRPGs on SNES and PS1?
Just look at the world map, it screams Chrono Trigger
Also the dual and triple techs, enemies visible on the map, the battle layout, there's one scene that is just a straight up reference to CT
>just look at the world map, it screams Chrono Trigger
might as well fucking call CT "Earthbound-inspired" because the world map was clearly a reference to this section of EB, as well as having symbol encounters.
>Make JRPG >main cast is shit
I'm not even talking about Garl. I'm talking about 2 MCs. Please tell me they are going to be better. At least I met assassin girl so maybe she will carry this game.
All the character names in this game feel like they were generated by AI, run through a scrambler, then re-generated by AI based on the scrambled output just for the sake of having "unique" shit.
It's a 6/10 JRPG dressed up as a 9/10 JRPG.
It's a $15 game with a $35 price tag.
It's an AA game made by a sizeable dev team with millions in funding LARPing as an indie game.
It's decent.
Beginning (when they are children) is fucking terrible, but it's maybe 1 hour long. Also note that elvelling is slow, so if you want OP characters you won't have them here, unless you grind like crazy.
Quirky Bugman slop.
It's more like golden sun, really.
Fun enough at least.
Chrono Trigger, but better.
It's more like Mario rpg but not awful.
Wait, this isn't a spoof of Star Ocean?
It's considerably better than Star Ocean
>"Chrono Trigger, but without the benefit of being released at a time I was young and impressionable, and affected by nostalgia."
Fixed.

Kids gonna grow up playing stuff like Sea of Stars and discover Chrono Trigger later in life
Play Trigger on NDS if you have it. Also here's a nice track to motivate you:

takes way too long to get going in terms of giving you all the tools and all the boss fights are bad
This is the most mid shit I've ever played.
Its good for falling asleep after work.
Don't even mention Chrono Trigger next to this soulless pet project.
I liked it but it's clearly lacking it's own identity and is just a mish-mash of ideas borrowed from other JRPGs

A lot of creators are their own worst critics.

We wuz japanese n shiet.
Looks chudish
I knew this game was going to be shit judging by the steven universe tumblr ass artstyle they got going on.
Sea of Stars >> dogshit >> CrossCode >> Chained Echoes
crosscode related how?
Probably because it has the same kinda tumblr art style
It's a role playing game (even though the majority of game is solving puzzles) and is/was shilled as much as other 2 mentioned games. Actually even more, but that makes sense since it came out before SoS and CE.
Crystal Project >>> Chained Echoes > Sea of Stars
No, it's just you realizing that JRPGs are simply shit.
I am Setsuna takes leaps around it and it is still an average game.

I tought it was going to be good...

There is only one genuinely great western JRPG. It is called Crystal Project.
>Chrono Trigger
Nothing I've seen of the game resembled Chrono Trigger. In or out of combat.
Why do people call or compare it to Chrono Trigger?

I hate that shit in any fantasy media, random ass syllable names
It's Gorn The Demon Slayer!
Durhamnam The moron!
Pringkledon Bubslabbafag The Fourth!
It reminds me more of Golden Sun. Anyways I liked it
It’s not even like Chrono Trigger besides the perspective.
It's basically Chrono Trigger with Super Mario RPG timed hit mechanics, but with a worse story and characters
Reading this thread made me crave pancakes with a dose of maple syrup for some reason.
Chrono Trigger but woke
So is the game decent?
Like i'm not asking to be a master piece or a game that would change the world, is the game just decent to play for a few hours
It's a 6/10 JRPG dressed up as a 9/10 JRPG.
