Civilization 5

Ok, how the FRICK do I git gud at this game. I've owned it for over a decade, have hundreds of hours in it and I STILL struggle to keep pace with the AI on normal difficulty.

It is normal for civ games to have one or two runaway civs, so not keeping up with the top dog at every aspect of the game doesn't mean that you are not doing well enough to win. Containing them and stopping them from winnkng is part of the game.

How to get better? Install VP and perhaps watch one of the youtube letsplays where they explain their though process and reasoning for various decisions. Then try applying those lessons in your own games at your own level. Keep in mingd that vanilla settler6 difficulty is more like settler4 in VP.

Avoid vanilla ''strats'' which only teach you a single trick instead of making you understand the game. Civs are flexible and pretty much every civ can do every victory. Recognising which victories are attainable and how to achive those at any given match is part of the game and the charm.

Does VP allow for more cities?

depends on what the AI is focusing on they will outpace you in it
ideally you focus on one thing and keep everything average leveled, so if the AI is focusing on a science victory then you won't beat them in it if you are focusing on a culture victory
also abandon all hope of ever getting wonders if egypt is in the game

You boost the hell out of your population growth in core cities with internal trade routes and prioritize national college/oxford/etc.

Remove the "Ancient Ruins" feature, and you will find the game is much more enjoyable. I can compete with the AI for early wonders on Immortal if I remove ruins.

I also play on Standard resource setting. Legendary Start is fun but it has the potential to create some really OP civs. With standard resources, you'll find most civs are on an equal pace early-mid game.

      Production is always king.

On immortal difficulty, waging war and dominating other civs pays off a lot. Don't be a pussy.

If I want to play a cultural victory game, I usually go for Emperor difficulty.

Learn what actions you take will piss of other civs, and what action you do take will make other civs (that you care about happy). E.g. when Mongolia sends its friend request, you do NOT accept because no one likes Mongolia (ever).

this, and always always go rationalism as soon as it's available

Ok thanks. So prioritize food and production above all else? Also, how true is it to never build more than 4 cities?
My main civ is Russia since they have production bonuses, if that matters

        >Also, how true is it to never build more than 4 cities?
very true, actually id argue to never build more than 3 cities if you can (unless you are that civ that gets bonus resources from cities on other islands or whatever)

Damn really. I was hoping I could make a lot of cities. Is there any way around this?

It's totally fine to make more than 4 cities, although there's no point, since you'll probably conquer other cities.
The very basic thing that every civ player should know about is building tall or wide.
Don't forget that caravans and cargo ships exist. Whenever you get caravans don't put them on money routes, but rather your city food or production routes. Food during peace time. Production into capital when building wonders or are at war.
Improve every.single.tile in your cities, even the ones that arent in use.
Use the manual citizen management mechanic.
I recommend playing other civs aswell there are so many and are all quite different, for example zulus are fun for rapid border expansion and warmongering - the impi are devastating.
Don't try and meta everything, enjoy what the civs have to offer and use that to your advantage

Thanks. I just like making lots of cities because I think it's fun

Ok I think this is where I'm going wrong. I always try and max money
              >Use the manual citizen management mechanic.
              How does this work?

Every citizen works a tile in the city borders or works a specialist slot. Unhappy citizens don't work anything so you don't want unhappiness. In the city screen you can double click on the black circle above a tile to lock a citizen (green face) in on that tile, and the game will automatically handle anything you don't lock in. As a general rule you always want your cities working food tiles until you hit the happiness cap (there's a handy avoid growth button for this) and you want as many citizens on production or specialists slots as you can. Two food is "food neutral" and supports the growth of 1 citizen, anything higher makes you grow much faster. If you have one guy work a 4 food farm tile that means you can have other citizens work mine tiles with no food and not run into starvation. It's easier to understand if you fiddle around with it while playing and see how it impacts growth and how long it takes to build things.

Thanks, so I should focus food until it's in surplus then shift everything else to production?

What anon probably meant was 2 food on a single tile.
                Im talking about overall food.
Food surplus=growth. You should ALWAYS have surplus. If you're under 12 pop and you're suffering with starvation then somethings really wrong.

Some other things I should mention with my previous recommendations although I'll talk about basics since i don't know how much knowledge you have of the game.
City placement is so important, it's kind of difficult to explain it over text, but some general rules of thumb:
ALWAYS settle turn one and and i never settle my capital city on tiles without water(coast or river/lake tile). Nor should you with your second city, but it's fine if you do.
Do not spread out your cities too far or close from each other - minimum four tile distance (city, 4 tiles, another city) gove your cities room to grow, otherwise the cities will start feeding into each other's tiles (meaning less tiles can be worked by both cities), building too far means road maintenance will cost more(you are connecting cities with roads, right?)
Building settlers halts pop growth, so don't do it too early(with low production halts precious pop growth for long periods of time) or too late (you'll probably have less land to settle on)
Tradition for low city count (3-4), Liberty for high count - you'll need the free workers otherwise you're fricked. Honor for early warmongering
Also, google zigzag's guides on the different civs, really great for beginners and to get the feel of each different civ.

Prioritize food (or happiness if you run out of it)

Then science because it increases with your population automatically and for most part you don't need to fork workers for it save for a few specialists in the mid game.

With science and population advantage you can get anything you want later in the game.

I always do the exact same start. Build worker, research pottery, build granary then go for Stonehenge to secure religion for 15% hammer and food then try for artemis and hanging gardens. then expand cities and go for science. Has worked well enough so far, playing on emperor I usually take the lead around the industrial age

I've logged ~500 hours and go 50-50 against Deity AI. The best advice I can give you is to have as small a standing army as possible if you're pursuing any victory condition other than domination. Focus on strong ranged units and submarines. The AI is programed to build lots of AA guns and empty carriers so take advantage of them for some nice EXP.

I usually try to rush Temple of Artemis as my first wonder, especially if I can train a ranged UU. Great Library is good if you have a lot of trees outside your territory that you can harvest (the production bonus goes to the nearest city if I recall).

The AI takes its sweet ass time to go for Artemis I've noticed, it's a great wonder to go for. Library on the other hand, I can never quite get it right, it's not worth building if you can't complete it on turn 35 usually but I've seen in being built on 30 and earlier. I just don't bother anymore

Also, don't bother making the EIC. AI intentionally avoids them.

Back in the thread to say: Don't play with Vox Populi. It has become bloated dogshit with terrible ai. Live long enough yada yada yada

Currently tearing through the workshop to build a better modpack, the shit on there is far better.
