This is spy's true power. Invisibility gives him a global taunt. The threat of a spy forces every enemy on the map to play around you. Even sniper is limited by sightlines.

Sure but if a sniper fails a shot, he's only really punished by another sniper that happens to be nearby. If a spy fails a stab, it's back to the spawn for him unless he had that dead ringer ready.

I remember having an idea for two spy weapons, one of them allowing him to do that
      >primary replacement
A toy revolver with a "bang" flag at the end. It does no damage but can be used without losing your disguise. While disguised, spy will fire fake projectiles of whatever primary weapon the player had (stock for boot demomen). Spy will be making sound effects with his mouth (bang bang bang, boom, fsshhh, pew pew, whirrrr tatatatata). Holding the reload key would mimic the weapon's reload animation (if it has one).
      >knife replacement
Spy holds a sharpie and a piece of paper with the message "kill me" written on it. It does 1 damage. "Backstabbing" players will not lose your disguise, but instead Spy will semi-silently stick the paper to the player's back, enabling friendly fire on them and disabling walking through team mates and buildings. If team killed, the killer will be marked for death until they die and play a C+6 voiceline. You can only slap it on one player at a time. It can be removed by using your melee on your team mate's back. If used while multiple players are inside each other or inside buildings, they get insta-gibbed/destroyed.

Notice that these two weapons have synergy. A spy with the primary would fake a player that can shoot while the knife would make players paranoid about a spy capable of doing just that.

Literally all classes are countered by "be aware of your surroundings"
Spy more specifically is countered by knowing how classes behave to foil disguises (which a good Spy shouldn't be using for longer than duping a passerby anyways) and by knowing there's a Spy on the enemy team to check behind yourself once in a while or listen for a decloak

I don't understand why this is so difficult for Spyfags to wrap their heads around. Spy was never intended to be the epic poggers trickstab frag movie class you losers turned him into. He's supposed to get in, pick off one or maybe even 2 high priority targets, then hopefully get out alive.

Dead Ringer is best used to get behind enemy lines when the game is caught around a major choke point. Even if you use it as a crutch if you can't stab someone you can't stab someone and there's only so many places you can run to.

        Anonymous

you don't even need to press tab. most idiots pop it way too early so it's obvious when they drop dead from like 10 damage. it's funny when a spy is just walking around with it open so you hit him with one shotgun pellet across map and he "dies"

          Anonymous

          >most idiots pop it way too early so it's obvious when they drop dead from like 10 damage.
The problem with the Dead Ringer, and what you don't understand about it, is that its practical function is not actually to fool other players about your death. It's function is to position yourself behind the enemy team without getting torn up by damage in the choke.
Whether you think you just killed the Spy for real or not, it doesn't change how you're going to continue playing. You might try and check for the Spy when the body falls, but DR speeboost and lack of cloak shimmer means the Spy can very quickly be wherever they want, so it doesn't matter if you try to chase them down. And then all you know is there's a Spy existing on the map somewhere, and there generally always is anyway, two even.
So why should a Spy with a modern DR wait to fake death until they're at 30 health? The weapon's modern damage reduction is low enough that they'll still be killed by one explosion, so even a half-hearted DR check has a good chance to kill the Spy for real. And that's ignoring the chance of unexpected damage sources taking your health to 0 before you even right click. So instead it's optimal to keep it held out as soon as you're near the fight so you can get your speed boost and enhanced cloak to go position yourself for free.

Why the fuck did they buff this again? It was already perfectly balanced.

        Anonymous

        >Buffed
The fact you can't pick up ammo and have to wait the full cloak recharge time makes it dogshit for its intended use as a cloak watch. Its only use now is for frag Spy in pubs to immediately de-cloak after damage and try to use the speed burst to force back stabs to get their kunai/Earner started. It was waaaaaay better as a general Spy watch when it actually let Spy survive nearly all damage, now it's a (popular) gimmick.

            >literally every spy uses it
This just flat out isn't true, your recall is biased by DR Spies tending to be bad and obvious. Invis Watch Spies are way less notable because
            >they're probably better at actually playing Spy
            >You often can't confirm a Spy you killed WASN'T DR because you can't logically prove a negative, you can just suppose after not hearing the loud de cloak or if you saw them cloak manually
And I don't have a "victim complex". The DR arguably was too strong, but its current form sucks for everyone. The speed boost incentivizes frag Spies too much which people want to play, so other players end up dealing with more DR shitters, while more generalist Spies pass up on it due to its inflexibility.

People want to play Spy like a frag class, but the ideal for the character is to have a single Spy that forces the enemy team to collectively waste a lot of time trying to prevent the Spy from getting free picks, as well as to coordinate with the team to destroy Engineer nests.
People like to point out that Spy gets 2 points from backstab kills and points for sapping, and thus his leader board score is "inflated". But it's an accurate representation of the benefits he provides his team. Backstabs let him kill enemies before they damage his team, and building destruction is huge damage to the time and metal economy of the game's most dangerous defense class, and most effective pressure class (due to level 3 teleporters). That all on top of his presence causing the enemy team to waste time Spy checking or chasing him after he's cloaked and changed direction.
What Spy effectively does is turn a single front battle into two fronts, an enormous power. By literally punishing the enemy team for looking at your team too long you're able to have an outsize effect on their coordination and pushes when you play your cards right.
But that means scaring, harassing and annoying people. It means remembering your gun exists and cajoling the enemy Medic to chase you down with their Ubersaw after a couple revolver shots from behind the choke-- shutting down the team's healing. Backstabs are great, but you need to learn the right time for them, understand the positioning and your sound giveaways and player attention.
Also, don't go Spy if your team has 1, or especially 2. 90% of the advantage Spy gives a team is from his presence, stacking him just isn't helpful.

      Anonymous

There's a lot of value in playing Spy for just long enough that the enemy team is paranoid and then changing off so they keep chasing ghosts imo, Spy is intended to be a psychological class and he does work for that when the enemies are now checking behind themselves every half a second

      Anonymous

      >What Spy effectively does is turn a single front battle into two fronts,
Yeah. I have about 25 collective hours on spy, but even I have found myself going to spy lately to occasionally just stab at least one important guy on the enemy team.
Having one spy on your team can be a benefit assuming he's not a total idiot simply because he prevents the enemy team from getting too comfortable and lazy.

  21. 2 weeks ago
    Anonymous

That's if you don't understand the use of Spy. He's not there to get the best K/D ratio. He's there to fuck with the enemy team's heads. A single decent spy forces your opponent to waste time spy-checking, which takes their focus off the objective. Over time, these seconds of distraction add up, which gives your team an advantage.
