This year was kind of interesting as a bystander to see what they've managed to do in the last 2 years, but overall the players are much less entertaining than the older era.
There's no denying they are overall better, although I do think some of the older top DAS players were better mentally, whereas the newer champs make up for that with rolling. Even if this is a bullshit opinion, I still think the older players were more entertaining than most of the players this year. The one exception was the youngest guy "Thatchy" who showboated a bit, that was pretty entertaining.

Any game that is "accessible" as an eSport is attractive to the younger generation. The difficulty threshold of classic Tetris was lowered a bit with "hypertapping" a few years ago. It was significantly lowered with the "rolling" technique. As you can see above any fat loser can now go to the championships utilizing their pudgy, stinky feet.
The way they are holding these controllers make me think there's something wrong in this competition.

Tetris Effect Connected has a mode that tries to emulate the CTWC feel yes. It's never going to be perfect but it's been warmly received in the community, Greentea who was a player was involved in development.
