Comfy steam deck thread

I just enabled dev mode and got plugins
I stayed up all night messing around with powertools tweaking and messing with yuzu
finally got pokemon legends arceus to run pretty damn well
I have the 60fps mod but I might turn it off and see how that goes since I noticed gameplay gets sped up at times

How is your deck going anon? Got any plugin recommendations?

Playing Just Cause 3 with max settings, 800p and a locked 30 fps.
This thing really is a PS4 for on the go.
I'm thinking of installing MK8 on it just to gloat about it to tendies.

How did you lock the fps?

    >turn tdp limit way the frick down in not very demanding game
    >instantly get double the battery life at zero performance cost

i'm very happy with my deck but it's kinda dumb that you have to babysit it on a per-game basis to get good power management out of it

Managing TDP is key to get good battery life, not frame rate locks and shit. Tons of games will push Deck to its maximum frequencies despite not needing to.

why is shit that is factory enabled the cause of so many switch games running sub optimally?

    Suh /deck/
My deck is collecting dust because i'm actively playing WoW (I know...)
What would your go-to game(s) be to play during little pauses (like time it takes to fill a raid or M+ group)?

I can't decide if enabling the widescreen hack in duckstation is actually making games render in 16:10 or if it's 16:9 and stretched very slightly to 16:10

I don't get people who complain that a Deck 2 with better specs might exist in the future. Do those Black folk live under a rock where laptops don't get yearly revisions? Because PC handhelds are basically an ultrabook in a different for factor and made for playing games

People that are probably spoiled by consoles with the longer intervals between upgrades. Plus, buying something new just for a newer upgraded version to come out the next day sucks especially if the price stays relatively the same.

        >buying something new just for a newer upgraded version to come out the next day sucks especially if the price stays relatively the same
welcome to PC hardware then, where the Zen 4 CPUs just came out months ago will be surpassed by upcoming newer Zen4 CPUs with 3D cache in gaming performance. It's autistic to keep thinking "something better will release" because it always does on a yearly basis, sometimes even less, if you count also GPUs and better RAM, every 6 months or so there's something that gets better performance.

Even consoles these days are coming with multiple SKUs and the upgraded models are happening more and more mid gen. The only one who didn't do this was Nintendo and the average public kinda does resent the specs of the Switch, as seen in the disappointment in how the latest model only has the OLED screen as a difference

For desktop hardware, it doesn't really matter unless you have some specific use case that you need more modern CPUs. CPUs from 2012-13 can still handle whatever is released today. For mobile (ARM and x86) hardware it does make a difference since mobile upgrades are pretty significant in each iteration.

          >as seen in the disappointment in how the latest model only has the OLED screen as a difference
I think its hard to gauge that to be honest. Part of the disappointment was due to people hyping themselves up because they believed some literal who on twitter that a Switch 2 would be announced. I think Nintendo got hit hard by the new3DS so I don't think they'll try something like a half-step upgrade again.

I mean if someone wants to cry because something brand new outperforms your relatively new hardware, it's better to not use laptops, desktops and also the Deck being a handheld PC to save some stress.

Zen4 3D will outperform the already existing Zen4 lineup in games, if it's going to be 8 frames of difference or 20 who knows, but it will beat it just as 5800X3D shat all over the Ryzen 5000s in gaming, just as the 13900KS will outperform the 13900K by a little bit. You can't blame Valve for doing what is the thing every other hardware company does in the PC space, some people might want a RDNA3 iGPU based Deck that will deliver much better performance, and some might be holding out for a superior SKU that will deliver 60fps~ performance or whatever it is and they don't want to buy the current Deck, who knows.

It's like being mad at water being wet, this is how the hardware market operates, and the Deck was always advertised as a PC handheld. Perhaps it is one more accessible than building your own PC but it's still bound and restricted by its innards, and upcoming PC games will come with superior hardware demands, so there's the pressure for an improved Deck 2.

The difference is that a new console is an entirely different platform and devs will drop the old one like it's hot. An older PC is still the same platform as a newer PC so you can still run the same games as long as it's performant enough.

What's the Steam Deck's software repository like?

I use Linux Mint on my PC where we have Ubuntu's software repository and flatpaks from Flathub.

      Anonymous

it uses an immutable filesystem which only allows flatpaks

heard there was a way to enable pacman but anything you do on that isn't guaranteed to stick after an os update

you mostly work with flatpaks and some appimages.
you can enable pacman, but updates may not stick
And i have not tried things like distro box or nix.

From the last interview they gave Valve made it sound like there was going to be a minor revision of the Deck coming, and that a true Deck2 was much further down the road.

Finally installed PPSSPP on the deck to play Pangya Fantasy Golf in bed. Bros, I never felt so comfy before.

PPSSPP was such a godsend, truly one of the greatest emulators. The PSP is just old enough to have some unique wacky games and just new enough that the low poly graphics work really well with higher internal rendering too.

Yeah, pangya looks surprisingly decent with higher rendering resolution considering how limited the geometry and textures are. Like some modern indie game that aims for that look.
