So this game only has 6 or 7 chapters, right? I'm on chapter 3 and like 10 hours in, but also hear this is a 100 hour game. Is one chapter 75% of the game or something?

Chapter 4 is longer than the others, yes, but when people say it's a 100+ hour game they also include side content, which the game has a frickload of.
Hero quests and Side quests
you can blast through the game in like 15 hours if you set it to easy and skip everything
If you just critical path the game like a moron doing zero exploration or side quests than the game only takes about 55 hours to beat.
But that's the worst most moronic way to experience the game.
Chapter 3-5 are pretty meaty, but there is kind of an implicit assumption that you will be doing sidequests along the way. If you speedrun the game at the pace you are going, I bet you'll finish at around the 40 hour mark.
That's about when the game really starts opening up anyway.

For all the fault I find in the game past the beginning of chapter 6, I legit cried for the end of Ch.5/beginning of Ch.6. I mean, I knew it was coming, right from the first trailer. We all knew, we played enough Xeno games, of course a main character will die and be brought back to life. And it was written all over Mio for obvious reasons.
And yet. My body legit wasn't ready. The gradual buildup in emotions, the camera work, the characterization, the voice acting (JP for me, but I guess it was also good in EN), the overall direction, the music. THE FRICKING MUSIC.
I was fricking moved to tears. And I'm not joking here : it's probably the best emotional scene in any medium ever. Be it movies, series, vidyas, books, whatever you name it. Books won't have the fricking mastercraft of Mitsuda to weight their words. Other vidyas are not as well written. Movies don't have the length to make you feel so strongly for characters you get to know for hours through a game. Series only have second rate actors that won't act good enough to make you feel much, and won't have Mitsuda either.
Let's be real here. This entire sequence is unmatched in all of mankind's works of fiction in any medium ever. It had to be said.

Biggest one was when they brought back the mementos of Vandham's group and played for them before their loved ones, and I nearly lost it when the lights started coming out.

Combat is pretty slow the first hours until you get the second half of your team, but after that it's quite fun.
You hated the combat because you didn't read the tutorials so you ended up button mashing the whole time.
You're most likely going to end up the same why with XC3 since it takes a lot from XC2's combat.
3's combat is similar to 2 but there's a lot more customization. It's a lot of fun.

High Entia live for up to 4 centuries, so if we say melia hits the wall when she's visibly 30 (no Christmas cake nip tomfoolery allowed) that means Melia has until she's 150 years old to find someone. She has a countdown timer of 50 years after XB3 until it's over
If Melia is 288 in XB3, then that'd make her nearly 60. Even if she doesn't have any kids, she's not hitting the wall any time soon, so she'll have no trouble finding a widowed man with children to take her in. It's just a matter of picking the right man to make a widow.

You can go through the game with just your one character just fine.
Switching however is useful if you want to guarantee shit like characters standing in fields, healers reviving the correct character and so on.
I mostly used Switching to
A. Take control of healers. They'll sit on heals too long and wait for people to be low health.
B. Move tanks/Dps into circles
C. control tanks to cancel arts so you get more damage and more aggro
D. insure a smash/burst combo goes off

The opening cutscene shows that there's going to be a celebration for the Queen, so people are assuming it's Melia's 100th birthday, which would be 12 years after XC1.
Personally I think it's more likely to be her 200th birthday, since she looks considerably older in this game compared to XC1, and not just because of Saito's artstyle.

The Blades in XB2 all had japanese names while the humans had foreigner names (like Rex), this was a cool detail because they come from the Trinity Processor, the computer that creates a sword with kanji in them. This is lost in the translation and for whatever reason they decided to not translate some names in XB3 like Sena or Miyabi
It's not like 2 ever explains in any of the scripts why Blades have Japanese names (and American accents in the dub), and by XC3's time they probably just accepted it as something normal like how Gormottis have cat ears and Urayans have scales on their faces.
The only thing we know is that Alrest used to be Earth so Japan existed at some point in Xenoblade's timeline, meaning it's either the actual creator of the Trinity Processor was a Japanese or Klaus was a huge weeb.

Most of the defeat X monsters and shit exist in another way in XC2, they're to unlock battle skills for your Blades. There's also the obligatory generic jrpg quests. But there's also quite a bunch of voiced quests (all of the personal Blade quests for instance) that are much more interesting than almost all of 1 can offer.
XB3's greatest addition to the series was sidequests worth a damn.

The only one who is still unhappy is some dumb bird, because everyone went to meet their partner and ignored her fireworks.

My chain attack strategy is just to fish for topples and on the ouroboros order have Noah use his launch/smash move, by that point the damage multiplier knocks out half of the boss’ health.

No it forces you to click through painful dialogue boxes that are both vague and thorough at the same time.
Too big a reaction to XB2's tutorials being awful, decided to just handhold you through everything.
Outside of the early ones forcing you to go through menus one by one, the game does a decent job of giving you the info you need - apart from the Burst info which for some reason doesn't appear until the penultimate area of the game.
Theres an option that lets you disable all tutorials in the menu. Good luck with chain attacks 🙂

Normal is too easy mid-late game but hard is too hard early game, switch once you start blowing away 70% of the Boss' health in a single chain.
Hard is ridiculously difficult early game to the point where the lv 5 bunnit unique enemy will fricking kill you over and over
Normal is fairly average and gets to be ridiculously easy near the end.
Hard starts off fricking ridiculous and becomes fairly normal by the end.
I actually prefer hard- its absolutely brutal as frick in the early game, but it is a cruel but effective teacher. You learn pretty quickly how to build sets and time things correctly, and once you hit the end game superbosses there really isn't a whole lot "new" to learn that makes them too difficult.
How easy does the end-game get on Video Game Journalist mode? I've thought about switching to Hard since even tyrants aren't giving me much trouble anymore.
I've never actually tried Easy, but I'd imagine dying would be incredibly difficult. Pretty much every unique monster past level 80 becomes a fricking joke on normal outside the superbosses. Even on hard you can usually handle uniques a few levels above you with very minimal prep work. Obviously there are exceptions to this, but I can count on one hand the number of non-superboss uniques that gave me serious trouble past level 80.
I should clarify that I'm not on Easy mode, just Normal mode. But for shits and giggles I'm curious to how trivial it makes the game.
