GuestI’ll buy one if I see a later gen model for cheap second hand for emulation and trolling Ganker on the bog
The deck isn’t actually what is important. What is important are the changes it will bring about for SteamOS. Once that’s ripe, bye, bye Windows. Forever. After while we’ll finally have flying cars and Dragon’s Dogma World on the moon. The great GabeN in the sky deems it so.

GuestHow it will be works with more graphical demands titles like Cybershit?
How it will be works with games which base mainly on keyboard and mouse?
How about exclusives? It will have something which I cannot access on PC?
How much I will need to fight with configuration of WINE on that (it will probably have a linux – Steam OS)
How much it will be costs? I saw that this will be 450$, and don’t forget about worldwide lack of semiconductors, which can increase the price.Literally I don’t see a reason why I would need to buy that instead of good gaming laptop… and if I want to play mobile, I would play on my switch/buy tablet.

Guest>How it will be works with more graphical demands titles like Cybershit?
according to promotional materials, yes. 30FPS on high settings. but its marketing material so they might be embelishing facts.
>How it will be works with games which base mainly on keyboard and mouse?
IIRC it has a touchscreen, and you could easily bind the keys to keyboard strokes. maybe make a buttom me a shift/ctrl/right click modifier.
>How about exclusives? It will have something which I cannot access on PC?
no. its a miniature PC running Linux. anything it can run will run on Linux
>How much I will need to fight with configuration of WINE on that (it will probably have a linux – Steam OS)
depends on game. check protondb website for details, but keep in mind there is a massive proton update scheduled to go with it so thing that dont work now or need tinkering might work better in the new version
>How much it will be costs? I saw that this will be 450$, and don’t forget about worldwide lack of semiconductors, which can increase the price.
$399 for the basic 64GB version
$529 for the standard 256GB version
$649 for the elite anti-glare screen 512GB version -

Guest>How it will be works with more graphical demands titles like Cybershit?
https://www.tomshardware.com/news/steam-deck-benchmarks-60-fps-gaming-experience-reasonable-eye-candy
Deck can run Cyberpunk at high settings and hit 20-30fps. Obviously turning down a couple settings would boost frames.
>How it will be works with games which base mainly on keyboard and mouse?
Steam already has a solution to this with their extensive controller config options. You can rebind controls to anything you want. With the Steam Controller’s touch pads you have several different options for mouse emulation and it works very well.
>How about exclusives? It will have something which I cannot access on PC?
It literally is a PC.
>How much I will need to fight with configuration of WINE on that
Proton, not Wine.
>How much it will be costs? I saw that this will be 450$, and don’t forget about worldwide lack of semiconductors, which can increase the price.
You’re obviously just baiting now. Base model is $400. Top model is $650. The price isn’t changing. If you can’t grasp the concept that a UMPC is more ergonomic than a laptop then you’re too smooth brained to talk to.

GuestValve never tried to make gaming consoles. They tried to start an OEM branding label for prebuilt machines that came with Linux installed instead of Windows.
It was a shitshow because no one took it seriously and their minimum hardware standards were incredibly low.

GuestObscure games on Steam will not run on that. F.e. VN – i don’t know why japan is so retarded, but they still use a Media Player in a lot of VN to play a cutscenes – and wine/proton cannot run that (Marco and Galaxy Dragon). Also some games cannot handle a lot things on linux (f.e. Yuppie Psycho has a problems with horror VHS cutscenes). Touchpad is good but not for the all of games, I cannot imagine me playing an Ultrakill with touchpad. A lot will be depended of their launch – how games will be working on this handled. If it will get a bad start, I can imagine that this console will quickly be forgotten.
And without exclusives, Idk, Nintendo also runs a lot of PC games and have his own and console is cheaper, so…

SD card speeds supported by Deck are around 100MB/s of read and 30MB/s write compared to m.2 SSDs which typically get hundreds or thousands of MB/s transfer speeds-

GuestThe steam deck feels like it’s carrying the soul of the PSP by being the only handheld system with modern components in a nintendo dominated market. The PSP and Vita’s main attraction was being able to play console quality games on a handheld but they were mostly saddled with lesser spin-offs of their console counterparts of God of War and Uncharted. The Steam Deck actually lives up to that ambition by literally being a decently powerful PC crammed into a handheld form factor. The scalability of PC gaming will be this system’s biggest strength going into the future.

GuestI’m considering it but I don’t know much about it. The only console I own from the last 15 years is the ps vita and I don’t use my PC to play steam games either, I only emulate old games. There are a few jap PC games I’m interested in like code vein, nioh, atelier, and more importantly emulating various older games. I might also read some eroge if it’s comfortable to hold the console in one hand and my cock in the other.
I can’t into linux so I don’t know how complicated it would be to set this up and get games running. Last I heard, linux had compatibility issues for games. Will a steam deck run whatever I want it to? -

GuestI’m looking through https://www.protondb.com/
and it’s concerning. Even the games listed as working often have some extra complicated adjustments that need to be made for every game, have frequent crashes, cutscenes don’t play, etc. so it sounds like the experience of playing it this way is going to be a lot worse.-

GuestProton is gonna be the biggest question mark here, and I donβt know whether I should be worried or happy about how confident Valve is about it now. As of the current moment, I donβt think that the experience will be as good as many are expecting, but Valve seems to just wipe it off with βdonβt worry, we have made massive improvements to it, it will just werk once you get itβ.
Super nice if they get it done, that would be the biggest single step forward for Linux gaming yet, but somehow I have hard time believing it yet.

GuestI kinda felt like you at the beginning, but honestly, I’ve been really impressed with how they’ve managed to deliver on every other promise they’ve made so far
>It’ll be powerful enough to run even modern games decently
Chink leaks have shown that to be true
>We’ll get anti-cheat working by the time it releases
EAC and Battleye confirmed they bent the knee
That, plus the fact that they’ve been pretty reasonable when talking about it, without trying to overhype it or hide whatever shortcomings it has, makes me confident enough in Valve that if they say they got some souped up version of proton on a private repo somewhere that "just werks", well then, I believe they probably do.
Also yeah whatThe Deck is one set of hardware, they can easily load custom tweaks of Steam games on launch.
said. Might not be pratical to implement for every device that’ll run Steam OS ever, but at the very least it should let the Deck handle the more troublesome edge cases hassle-free.

GuestI have a reservation, but then I also realized I also stopped using my Switch in handheld and play docked exclusively for years. That was mostly because joycons are pieces of shit and started drifitng, making handheld uplayable.
I don’t know what i’m gonna do now, its guaranteed to collect dust once the novelty wears off and I stick to desktop.

GuestI have one reserved for Q1, and I will probably go for it *if* there arenβt any major bad surprises about it.
>no too common hardware failures, not interested in HW lottery
>Proton doesnβt have to run absolutely everything, but Valve better deliver on the promise that it will be better then than it is now
>??? for random stupid issuesThankfully, at least we have a pretty good idea about its hardware power. Iβm not planning on playing the newest AAA games on it, so it should be more than enough for my use cases on that front.

GuestIt’s funny how the west is obsessed with the whole "The Cloud/Digital is the Future" shit but at the same time they want the Physical Retail Marketspace.
Just another failure in the making by a company so out of touch like Valve who think they can do what the Switch does without exclusive games of their own and with no physical media.Another failed toy to be forgotten like the SteamBoxes.

Can you explain this to a computer illiterate? Which consoles can I expect this thing to emulate and have it work just as well as playing on the real thing?-
October 13, 2021 at 11:22 pm #395669

GuestPretty much every modern emulator has native Linux builds, so I’d bet anything below Seventh Generation (PS3, 360) emulation would be easy. PS3 and Switch might be possible if the Deck is powerful enough, and Wii U will probably only happen if the Cemu devs decide to do a Linux build

GuestNot him but I’d guess any 6th generation console and prior as well as the Wii. Maybe the Switch but possibly only certain titles like Metroid Dread, not sure if you could get something like BoTW running well on those specs

GuestHonestly, everything that has an emulator available right now should be fair game (except for PS3 most likely). I’ve seen some anons be skeptical about its ability to play Switch games, but after doing some extensive testing of Switch emulation on my quite frankly underpowered PC, and considering the speed and frequency at which Switch emulators keep getting better, I have a hard time believing it’ll have any trouble at all running them.
I suppose I shouldn’t make any promises, but I think it’s fair to say Nintendo exclusives, which are all very well optimised, will run without any trouble at all, while more demanding 3rd party games already have native PC versions in 90% of cases. All in all a pretty good deal I’d say, in perspective.
