GuestThis tbh.
Biggest problem for me as well.
It might be less of a problem with the art-department and more of underestimating creating high-quality environments and areas for an entire open-world.
They just aren’t capable of this level of quality across the entire game world, so my guess is all the good areas will be purely in the legacy dungeons and the rest will be this bland and boring landscape, creating a big disparity between the content the game provides.-

GuestIt’s not just the map design though. I am sure "dead world illuminated by a golden shine from a giant magic tree" sounded like a good idea on paper but the way it’s implemented is awful because thanks to its glow and the yellow-grey colour palette the entire area looks really fucking ugly. It’s almost amateurish.

GuestThat’s the problem every game has now with open world. You can’t put enough interesting things going on for it to be worth a damn. In addition, the foliage density and etc. is pretty shit, it looks more like an open wasteland than the forests and plains that was described.

So more like BotW towers except they don’t actually give you the map for that area, you have to find it as an item.>Skyrim compass
There’s a compass but what exactly makes it a Skyrim compass? King’s Field had a compass. It’s confirmed that the only marker(s) you get is/are placed manually and it’s possible that you only get one at a time. Skyrim’s compass gives you all POIs in a certain range even if you haven’t discovered them yet.-

Guest>compass with no markers
>compass with one player placed marker that is only useful if you’ve already at least seen the POI at a distance
>compass that shows all POIs even if you have no other way of knowing they’re there
Which two are the most similar? Also, you’ll be shocked to learn that marking a point on a map, noting down various measurements and using a compass to navigate there is how you do it in real life.>there are not quest markers, it’s already confirmed that the only markers in the game are markers you can set on the map yourself
Seems conflicting. How is that a quest marker? It’s just like the sword beam in SotC.
[…]
So which is it? Automatically marking dungeons on your map, or manually placing light beams?>you can zoom in on a dungeon to automatically mark it on your map
>you can manually place a marker on the map that will be visible in game and on the compass
These are two very different things and it seems like you only get one manual marker at a time. -

Guest>Also, you’ll be shocked to learn that marking a point on a map, noting down various measurements and using a compass to navigate there is how you do it in real life.
That’s right, you mark things down on your map, you don’t have icons magically appear on your compass pointing in their direction.
>These are two very different things and it seems like you only get one manual marker at a time.
Oh, does it seem that way to you? How come? How do you know it doesn’t mark them automatically on your map and add their icons to your compass? -

Guestit doesn’t put a bunch of markers on your compass. when you find one of the ubisoft towers icons of nearby dungeons get added to your map and if you want to you can add a marker to the map and an icon will appear on your compass

GuestFrankly I don’t see much of a problem with the tower POIs being added to the compass even if there’s no indication that that’s how the game will work. Like you say, it’s more or less the same outcome either way. The real problem with the Skyrim compass is that it tells you where POIs are even if you’ve never seen them before or have no way of knowing that there’s something there in the first place, and it’s quite clear that in Elden Ring nothing will be marked if you haven’t already taken a good look at it.

You can literally see a POI in this webmIt’s fucking perfect.
Even if it’s placed by the player, it’s still functionally the same thing. Honestly, considering how the compass is designed I’d be surprised if it didn’t end up displaying more information during casual play, otherwise why even have it constantly on screen in that position in the first place. Even the King’s Field games had the compass tucked away in the corner.

Not that my playing it has any relation to whether it’s good design or not, now stop the ad hominems and bad faith arguing. It tells you the direction you’re facing. It’s not complicated.
That’s not how a compass works in real life. And even though I agree that it showing the way you’re facing is a good idea, I think not showing all 4 directions at once is a terrible way to do it.

What’s the bad thing about this compass
The King’s Field compass pictured hereI fucking KNOW you people aren’t crying about a compas in a From Software King’s Soulsborn style game. There is no fucking way.
was a ball with big letters because it had to be visible on a 360p TV across the room, not a 1440p monitor two feet from the face. This compass is just an evolution of that and works the same. It has all directions written down on it, it spins the direction you’re facing, and it doesn’t show the full cardinal directions because they can be insinuated from what you are seeing.

GuestBecause visual calculation is faster than mental, and having a compass wrapping around you 360º is incredibly gamey, the opposite of diagetic, and completely takes you out of the experience. You’ll spend more time staring at the top of your screen to see where you’re going than actually taking in the sights and appreciating the world.

GuestJust remove the unnecessary visuals and just have the compass. That’s all you need to traverse the map since it tells you where to go.

So which is it? Automatically marking dungeons on your map, or manually placing light beams? The "Lost Grace" thingies are these beams of light coming from the big tree. I don’t think they show up on the map from what I understand.

That would make sense, but I’ve been burnt too many times expecting modern videogames to follow common sense when it comes to player experience/UI customization.
I’ll believe it when I see it. It still makes me wonder why they bothered in the first place, as if a giant beam of light existing in the game world would be too hard to follow for some reason.

someone could leak an entire playthrough and just call it "dark souls 3 mod campaign" and no one would notice
there is probably webms on Ganker of elden ring in Dark souls threads and people just didn’t notice that its different game

GuestBecause spatial intelligence is a type of int. And unless you’re going to break it down into different IQ/EQ measurements then general int is the best stat.
Also the hope is that this would be an adventure game where you have to go out and adventure and do adventurer things. Like, you know, making a map. -

GuestAre you one of those autists who take everything people say literally? That anon is clearly talking about the type of compass that features in-game information on it, not a standard compass you briefly pull out to gain a sense of direction.
Elden Ring having a compass item your character pulls out at times would honestly be better than the floating UI graphic that will be sitting on-screen all the time with whatever marker you’ve placed down. Would also encourage the player to use distant landmarks in the game’s world to help tell general directions instead.

GuestThe character should have a compass, but it should framed as an object the character pulls out and uses, not a consistent, abstract UI element. Kinda like how in Farcry 2 the in-game map was a physical object your character pulled out in real time.
Feels weird to be complimenting an open world Ubisoft game for something.
