It’s an object made for killing-
Warriors and barbarians traditionally fight with axes, at least in RPG land, and they’re usually godless men. Knights and other holy classes use long swords, maces, staves, books, and etc.

But Axes are fucking universal
a farmer can just use his woodaxe in battle and be just as effective as a man with his sword
which is what a lot of people did all over the world.
Some nobles valued their fucking daggers more than a sword. Because Daggers are just as universal.-
A woodaxe is quite literally unbalanced towardss the head, but yeahI get your point. Also, flails were farming tools developed into actual weapons

against someone without armor a sword would make bigger wounds thanks to the longer blade on top of having more reach and being a more agile weapon in general

a head of an axe is heftier and more capable of punching through armor than a sword, and a dagger has a smaller point to weave into unprotected areas of body armor and inflict fatal wounds
swords are quite nice, but they suffer in effectiveness when compared to more specialised weapons like axes and daggers
you’d actually have to be a VERY well-trained combatant to make do with just a sword-
an few soldiers were completely armored and if you are fighting a profesional soldier with a true infantry weapon such as a halberd, pollaxe or great sword that is wearing armor with just a woodsman axe you are fucked the agility and reach of the other weapons is much of an advantage, outside of scandinavians and anglos axes where almost never used in battle outside pollaxes, and throwing axes.

well it all comes down to right tool for the right job
swords aren’t always the right tool for the job, whilst axes and daggers offer just a bit more utility and unique combat effectiveness than the sword is capable of
of course, swords are longer and able to keep enemies at a distance, which is a good advantage
swords suffer against armor, though, and an armored soldier, at any protection level, won’t let you easily get past the armor if they can help it
can’t do everything at once, nor can you prepare for every eventuality
so it’s better to just bring more than one weapon into battle and use them as the opportunity presents itself -
yeah a sword with a dagger is your backup unless you have a ranged weapon, are operating machinery or is a big sword

For me it’s whatever class lets me dual wield hand-axes and shortswords together and max out speed. Sometimes it’s rogue, sometimes it’s just a warrior that dumps points into speed.
I just like dual wielding weapons with different properties when applicable. And attacking fast. -
